Eve Duncan returns as the popular heroine of Iris Johansen's latest suspense thriller, The Killing Game. After the murder of her daughter Bonnie and years of work as a forensic sculptor, Eve had hoped to find some solace in semi-retirement. But when her friend Joe Quinn informs her of the unearthing of multiple bodies, including those of children, Eve cannot resist getting caught up. Those bones may be Bonnie's, and somewhere out there is a dangerous serial murderer. With Joe's loyal help, Eve grimly sets out to find a killer.
Determined to remain objective, Eve begins to reconstruct the face of one of the victims. But the killer wants her to become involved, and manipulates Eve's life like a puppeteer. Terrified of the killer but spurred on by her memories of Bonnie, Eve takes a gamble with her life. She will do whatever the murderer demands: she will be the bait, betting her life for the chance to save others.
As a great suspense novel should, The Killing Game keeps the action and the plot twists coming. Eve's job as a forensic sculptor is the perfect profession for a suspense heroine: she has official access to technical information and the emotional flexibility to react to the drama. Eve's grieving over the loss of Bonnie--and over her romantic complications--helps keep the story complex and appealing. Turn on all of the lights and keep the phone nearby--you won't want to be alone in the dark while reading this one. --Nancy R.E. O'Brien
Book Description
A merciless killer on the hunt...
An innocent child in his sights...
A woman driven to the edge to stop him...
Iris Johansen, New York Times bestselling author of
The Face of Deception and
The Ugly Duckling, returns with the most daring, terrifying, and nerve-shattering novel of her career as she takes us inside the twisted mind of a psychopath...and the heart of a woman who refuses to let him win.
The killer knew Eve Duncan all too well. He knew the pain she felt for her murdered daughter, Bonnie, whose body was never found. He knew that as one of the nation's top forensic sculptors she would insist on identifying nine skeletons unearthed on a bluff near Georgia's Talladega Falls. And he knew that she wouldn't be able to resist the temptation of believing that one of those skeletons--the one belonging to a young girl--might be Bonnie's.
But that is only the beginning of the killer's sadistic game. Soon the calls begin to come. Sly, insinuating, chilling. Whoever is on the other end of the line is watching. He sees every move Eve makes. He savors her pain. He could strike at any time. But that's not what he wants--not yet.
In a heartbeat, Eve's world is turned upside down. Not even the two tough, powerful, and relentless men who would do anything to keep Eve safe can help her. Charismatic business magnate John Logan and hard-as-nails Atlanta detective Joe Quinn can't go where Eve must go. Because the killer wants her alone, and he'll use his ace in the hole to make sure Eve complies.
Now Eve Duncan must match wits with the most dangerous of psychopaths. A man for whom life and death is no more than a game. A killing game. And he won't stop playing until he's gotten the prize he wants most: Eve's life.

LOVE IT.......2007-03-09
I LOVE IRIS JOHANSEN!!!! ALL OF THE BOOKS I HAVE READ OF HERS ARE GREAT!!!!! READ THEM, YOU WON'T BE DISAPOINTED!
Disturbing.......2006-11-28
A mad serial killer with a "score" of hundreds of brutal killings, mostly children, has taken the life of Bonnie, the daughter of forensic sculptor, Eve Duncan, and is now taunting her with messages and phone calls, threatening to kill another little girl who resembles Bonnie to a great degree. In a search for the bodies of the victims, Sarah Patrick uses her exceptionally clever sniffer dog, Monty, to locate the bodies and comes under great danger herself from this deranged madman. This is a very exciting, if disturbing read, with many insights into the warped mind of a monster who is totally without conscience or human feelings and made me horrified that such creatures probably DO exist in this world.
Looking for Bonnie.......2005-08-31
The killing Game is a sequel. I have not read the first book, but you can tell the writter expects you to have. Though I found not knowing all that transpired before was not an impediment to enjoying the book.
The heroine is Eve Duncan who is an foresnic sculpter. We learn that she has two men that would do anything for her. Quinn, the homicide detective, that gets her invloved in our story, by letting her know of the uncovered body of a young girl. A girl that may be here dead daughter. And Logan, a Bill Gates type, that wants only to shelter her. And has done a good job of it by having taken her to a private island in the pacific.
The numerous bodies found of course makes the news. And the killer not only see's that some of his kills have been uncovered. But that Eve is being brought in to help reconstruct one of the faces. Of course the reconstruction is to be of the little girl she thinks may be her daughter. But the killer steals the bones and calls Eve. He calls himself Dom and this is where the sick game begins.
Dom explains to Eve that he was the killer of her daughter. And that he was going to kill anther girl who could be her daughter reincarnated...It is a race. Can Eve solve all the puzzles that Dom sets for her and keep him intrigued. Or will he just kill the girl and her.
This book is a page turner and will keep your interest.
my new favorite book.......2005-07-03
This book is one of the best crime books I have ever read. It is exciting and thrilling.
Not as Good as "The Face of Deception" but entertaining.......2005-06-28
"The Killing Game" is the sequel to "The Face of Deception" (easier the most intriguing book of the series), which is actually the 2nd part in a longer series by Iris Johansen.
The novel is about foresnic sculptor Eve Duncan. Eve's daughter Bonnie was killed by a serial killer named Fraser who was executed a number of years ago, and the body of her daughter has never been found. After uncovering a political conspiracy in TFOD, she now lives with John Logan away from the public eye. When a friend of hers,
homicide detective Joe Quinn, finds the body of what appears to be a young girl, he brings Eve back to Atlanta to perform a recontruction on the skull. When she arrives, however, she discovers the skull has been stolen, then she recieves a call from a man who calls himself Dom. He tells Eve that he has stolen her daughters skull and that he in fact killed her and Fraser was a copy-cat killer who took the blame for it. Then he tells her about a young girl he wants to kill named Jane and now Eve feels that she must protect the girl (who bears a remarkable resemblance to Bonnie). Johansens "Eve Duncan" novels are interesting and intriguing. Like I said, TFOD was better than this, but this is an interesting and entertaining read. B+.

Book Description
The machinations of a new supervisor may have altered Gil Grissom's team of skillful CSIs, as Catherine Willows, Nick Stokes, and Warrick Brown are reassigned from the graveyard shift to the swing shift. That doesn't mean, however, that their paths will never cross. During the course of their separate investigations, the teams must unite again to investigate two distinct murders -- atrocities that are oddly aligned as they share much of the same collective evidence. Despite the different M.O.s, the CSIs are uncovering two wildly imperfect crimes that could possibly add up to an almost perfect one...

Another Quick CSI-Based Read.......2007-05-14
KILLING GAME is another enjoyable CSI story, although I found the actual plot to be a bit too predictable for my taste. However, I finished this story in a day, and was happy with the advanced character-development that this particular story held. If you enjoy CSI as much as I do, you won't be disappointed in reading these serialized novels.
Another good CSI mystery.......2006-02-08
I enjoyed this book - I have been reading the series in order and can't wait for the next one to come out. You don't need to read them in order, though, and if you are just starting to read them, while this one is good, I would suggest "Binding Ties" -- it's better.
A great Read.......2006-02-07
Wonderful descriptions and a great plot for all those who love the show. Characters are amazingly defined and seperated by thier thoughts.
Original Characters.......2005-12-19
While I enjoyed it, I thought that Max Allan Collins once again put too much emphasis on his original characters. Why not use the characters (like the lab techs) that exist in the CSI universe instead of creating new ones like the computer genius he's so enamoured with?
Not as strong as you'd hope.......2005-11-21
Any fan of CSI will like this series of novels, but with this one, you will be a little dissapointed. The last couple of novels were very strong, but this one puts the plot on the backburner and works more on character development. The way Collins describes the characters, their thoughts, and their attitudes is dead-on with the characters we've grown to love from the show. The plot, about two seemingly unrelated murders, is nothing innovative or ground breaking, but is very indicative of what you see on the show. The only problem I have is that the show CSI is about forensic detective work and it seems as though the forensics aren't in play all that much in this novel.
The plot is very by the numbers and I'm sure by the end of the book most people will have figured out who did it. Check it out if you're a CSI fan, but if this is your first CSI novel, you may want to go back and read Binding Ties instead.
Book Description
Killing Defence at Bridge is one of the all-time classics of the game. When it was first published, it revolutionized defense play, and today it continues to be as incisive and relevant as ever.
Customer Reviews:
Advanced book.......2007-07-26
There are many very good books on Defense. This is still one of the best. A nice set of topics and problems. A few of the problems use bidding that wouldn't be mainstream today and thus are less likely to be solved.
The book focuses on visualization, rather than preventing a Criss Cross Squeeze (though there is a chapter in squeeze defense).
Bridge defence, but not for beginners.......2004-12-19
This is a book for good defenders. If you don't defend well, you need to learn how to defend before you read this.
Kelsey teaches you to practice defending well. And that means counting to 13, over and over and over again. And it helps. If you are indeed a good defender, this will help make you a very good defender.
The 15 pages on opening leads helped me more than the rest of the book combined. Right after reading the chapter, I played in a bridge tournament. Declarer had bid both majors and dummy had picked hearts, a suit I held A-x in. I immediately led the low heart, stopping declarer from ruffing spades while maintaining control, and setting the contract. It was almost exactly the hand Kelsey had shown on page 61!
That's the good thing about this book. There's plenty of examples that are very similar to what you'll find in actual play. It improved my defensive play noticeably.
Sharpen your defense - you can COUNT on it!.......2000-11-15
All too often, bridge books present hands that look as if they were "set up." In order to get the right answer, you simply eliminate the "obvious" play. Not so in this book. Kelsey's hands look like those ordinary hands you might face in your local club or home game. Kelsey demonstrates that by thoroughly counting a hand (points, cards, tricks), a player can much more easily arrive at the killing defense. That's the major lesson in this book - counting, and Kelsey does a magnificent job of teaching it!
A constant reference to sharpen defensive skills.......1996-10-07
Kelsey's innovative approach to Bridge defence will have even the most skilled defender reading avidly. The problems and his approach to solving them are unique. The descriptions of the plays and options make entertaining reading in themselves and the experianced player is able to smile wrly on identifying their own common errors.
A reference book that is great to read from cover to cover or just open at any page and try the hand. All players will come back to this book to be reminded what they have forgotten or find new ways to teach old dogs tricks.

`You're A Cold Fish, Harry.'.......2003-03-07
This is the story of a former mercenary named Harry Exton who is recruited by an old compadre into a `game' in which soldiers of fortune are sponsored by wealthy investors (called Voices, because they're only heard on the telephone) to fight it out gladiatorial style in a variety of settings, from the nighted English countryside, to an abandoned tenement, to the very streets of London. There's a lot of `dosh' to be made, but Harry doesn't like being boxed in. After a particularly deadly game, on a whim to test his Voice, he wonders aloud what would happen if he were to up and quit. That's enough for the Voices, and in the very next game Harry is set up for the kill. But Harry X is a lot more resourceful than they think...
This is a great thriller which is bookended by a wounded Harry telling his incredible story to the doctor treating him. While the concept sounds like Hard Target, forget that bit of fluff. This is an extremely well crafted bit of British noir. The action is completely believable (if surpassingly violent at times). There are no slow mo two gun jumps from the fireball here. This is hard hitting, driven plotboiler with a lace of cool. The characters are as hard boiled as they come, and the story culminates in a classic twist.
The art here is gritty and realistic - perfectly married to the writing. And is it just me or does Harry look a great deal like Sean Bean?
Buy this if you can get it - it delivers.
Book Description
This sequel to Hugh Kelsey's bestselling Killing Defence at Bridge focuses on the importance of what to discard and how to control options in defence. By helping you develop insights into the hidden possibilities in the lie and play of the cards, this book will make you a sought-after partner, and a respected opponent.
Customer Reviews:
More Killing Defence.......2007-09-21
I have just started to read this book, but the first chapter - on discardng - is excellent. This topic is not really covered in any other bridge books that I have seen - and Kelsey's discussion of it is well worth the price of the book.
Tired of discarding from 10xxx and letting 3NT make?.......2001-02-23
Are you sick and tired of discarding from Txxx and letting 3NT romp home, when you could have discarded from JTxx and set it? Are you weary of watching declarer happily test one suit to see if it breaks, then try a finesse if that doesn't work, then try a squeeze if that doesn't work, when you could have forced declarer to commit to an early decision before he could extract much information about the defensive holdings? Are you guilt-ridden about the times you happily gave partner an early ruff and then watched him squirm because you endplayed him? Are you fed up with being -650 on a board and opening the score slip to discover most of the field was -620? Then read this book -- it is devoted to restricting declarer's options, preserving the defenders' options, and discarding correctly in situations that come up 3 times a session, not once a quarter. Buy two and give partner one. Hide it from the opponents -- soon you will be declarer again, so you mustn't let them read it!

Ionesco's version of a plague.......2004-06-10
In THE KILLING GAME, playwright Eugene Ionesco has set a play in a small town during an outbreak of plague. Citizens fall one after another, and the town is transformed from a gossipy, boring burg (where the townspeople all speak in cliches) into a maelstrom of paranoia and horror, as hundreds of citizens literally drop dead.
Meanwhile, a dark, hooded and cloaked figure walks amongst the townspeople. He's like the angel of death, or the grim reaper, or something of that fashion.
THE KILLING GAME is one of Ionesco's last plays. Much like the plots of his other plays, like THE CHAIRS, or RHINOCEROS, or AMEDEE, the central plot device is one of proliferation and acceleration. Something is accruing. The dead bodies are piling up. (As in Rhinoceros, where the citizens are all being turned into rhinoceri, or Amedee, where the dead body is growing and growing, and the mushrooms are multiplying in the apartment) As the townspeople are confronted by this crisis, their hypocrisy, crass opportunism, and arrant selfishness is on display.
Does this sound depressing? It's not. Ionesco is funny. During one short scene, two people puzzle over the accumulation of bodies. Moments ago, there were but 2 in a certain spot. Now there are eleven. One wonders if the proliferation happened before or after they died. His companion wonders if it was done "by computer." Through scenes such as this, Ionesco lightens the mood.
THE KILLING GAME is a witty and scathing look at the folly of man. Overall, I don't believe it is one of Ionesco's best plays. Still, it's the work of a modern master. For a reader fond of RHINOCEROS, THE BALD SOPRANO, THE CHAIRS, or any of Ionesco's better known plays, THE KILLING GAME will be a satisfying read.

A fabulous and insightful book.......2003-03-04
This book is one of those rare finds. A highly readable and insightful book about a too common psychological issue: self sabotage. The author's brilliant insights and accessible examples reflect a deep understanding of the dynamics of self sabotage and explain why so many of us do ourselves more harm than good. Procrastination, destructive relationships, job failure, inability to advocate for ourselves, these are all examples of what Dr. Brandt calls everyday masochism. He offers wise and brilliant advice for chaning these destructive patterns

Book Description
It’s December 2042 and Tex Murphy, last of the old-style PIs, has hit rock bottom. A run of tough luck and a soured marriage have left Tex nursing a bottle of cheap bourbon and wishing he could sink right into the pavement.
Then a priceless statuette is stolen. From the shadowy back streets of post-apocalyptic San Francisco come rumors that an ancient evil, foretold by prophecy and worshipped by an ancient blood cult, has mysteriously reawakened. When Tex is hired to find the statuette, he plunges into a labyrinth of deceit, manipulation, and murder. He’ll need all of his PI instincts and every ounce of Murphy savoir faire to resist the seduction of darkness and stop the forces of evil—before the terrifying prophecies become reality.
About the Author
Aaron Conners is the scriptwriter and co-creator of the multimedia interactive games Under a Killing Moon and The Pandora Directive. He lives in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Customer Reviews:
Tex Murphy, the best PI in history........2000-02-13
Tex Murphy is a detective in the year 2042. In Under a Killing Moon, Tex is hired to find a statuette for a lovely countess so it won't end up into the arms of a deadly blood cult who wants to destroy the world. Not only is it a great book, there is also great computer games of the same title. The book and Computer games both have sequels. Enjoy Under a Killing Moon and it's sequels, The Pandora Directive and Tex Murphy: Overseer.
Tex Murphy is in for it again in his third case.......1998-08-21
Tex Murphy, the San Francisco P.I. born a hundred years too late returns in his third case. Tex is hired to find a statuette for a woman named Countess Reiner, but after he gets it, he quickly loses it (With a couple blows to the head) and the place that Countess Reiner lived in has been deserted. Tex doesn't like getting hit over the head, or losing a paycheck, so Tex manages to stumble into a case too big for him and way over his head in a story that will leave you wowed and laughing. This is Tex Murphy's third adventure, before this there were two games that never became books: Mean Streets and Martian Memmorandum. If you're a Tex Murphy fan, or a mystery fan, this is a great book.
A worthy novelization.......1998-08-12
Having read Aaron Conners' novelization of THE PANDORA DIRECTIVE, I felt compelled to go out and get my hands on his next novel, UNDER A KILLING MOON.
One thing I really liked about PANDORA was that it didn't follow the game slavically--it was different in many ways. I get the feeling that, with MOON, Conners tried going even a step further--and actually write a novel that wasn't a *real* novelization, but more based on the basic storyline.
MOON-the novel differs vastly from MOON-the game (which, coincidentally, is one of my alltime favorite games), in more ways than I care to mention. If you thought Lucia Pernell's sudden sex change in PANDORA was a mite strange, just try and grab a hold of MOON--the novel starts in what would be the game's third chapter!!
While I found this to be a good approach in PANDORA, I found it a little confusing and possibly a bit irritating to read what looks like a stressed attempt to do the same thing done in PANDORA--only twice better. Conners seems to want to outdo himself by taking all the things that were good about PANDORA and doubling it in MOON. For instance, PANDORA featured one or two vivid descriptions of food (how it tasted, the flavors, etc.). MOON does the same, although there's more than five of them.
This does not constitute a bad novel, though, mind you. MOON is an overall pleasure to read, and--considering that a game like MOON, in its core form, is very unsuitable for novelization (how would *you* describe Rook's pawn shop robbery without making the whole thing look like a walkthru for the game?)--Conners pulls it off very well. The new twists to the plot are very imaginitive, and you get the sensation that this was what the cancelled silver screen project was going to look like.
The novel is very suitable, not only for fans of the game, but also for newcomers. Even if you haven't been acquainted with Tex Murphy via the computer monitor, you'll still be able to enjoy this book without losing any overall mood effect.
Great game-to-book novel!!.......1997-09-29
Not as exciting or overwhelming as "The Pandora Directive", it still packs a powerful punch of nostalgia and holds up it's name in a rare genre of writing.
