Book Description
A sensational addition to the Dresden Files adventures-from a USA Today bestselling author.
Professional wizard Harry Dresden is investigating a series of deaths in Chicago. Someone is killing practitioners of magic, those incapable of becoming full-fledged wizards. Shockingly, all the evidence points to Harry's half-brother, Thomas, as the murderer. Determined to clear his sibling's name, Harry uncovers a conspiracy within the White Council of Wizards that threatens not only him, but his nearest and dearest, too...

Best yet.......2007-10-08
Any series featuring a single main character runs a risk of getting stale, following a formula. I'm delighted to say that has not only NOT happened with White Knight, it's the best book yet.
Harry Dresden grows emotionally. His relationships with his brother and Murphy change and develop in both heartbreaking and heartwarming ways. And the main plot gets more exciting and more engrossing in each book, something that rarely occurs. My only complaint (as usual) is that it will be so long before the next book!
Great as always!.......2007-09-22
Jim does it again! Harry Dresden continues to grow and evolve as a character. Fast paced and I couldn't put it down!
Dead or Disappeared.......2007-09-21
White Night (2007) is the ninth Urban Fantasy novel in the Dresden Files series, following Proven Guilty. In the previous volume, Harry fetched Molly Carpenter back from Arctis Tor, with a little help from his friends. He took her back to her family, but she decided to turn herself in to the White Council for violations of the Fourth Law.
At the trial, the Merlin arbitrarily convicted her of using black magic and sentenced her to death. Harry pointed out that the Gatekeeper hadn't yet cast his vote. Then Ebenezar McCoy arrived with survivors of the Warden training group accompanied by Molly's father Michael. Merlin reconsidered his verdict and Molly became Harry's apprentice.
In this novel, Sergeant Murphy has a probable suicide, but she rides a hunch and calls in Harry. He checks out the scene and casts a spell at a particular place on the wall. The notation "EXODUS 22:18" appears and Karrin knows the victim was murdered.
Suddenly, Murphy strikes out with a foot sweep and a young woman -- little more than a girl -- becomes visible and falls to the floor. Harry's apprentice Molly hasn't done as he told her and now she has a few bruises and pains to remind her to obey her master. Not that she is going to pay attention, but one more lesson won't hurt . . . much!
Harry does congratulate her on the invisibility spell, but points out that both he and Sergeant Murphy had noticed a few out-of-place sounds and smells. Molly needs to put in some extra practice, but she is improving. Molly goes home happy, but aching in several places.
In this story, Harry and Murphy find other victims around Chicago and elsewhere. Most of the Chicago victims belong to a witch group known as Ordo Lebes, which Dresden translates in his correspondence course Latin as "Order of the Big Pot". Karrin, however, suggests that a better interpretation would be "Order of the Cauldron". But one victim does not belong to this order.
Harry also discovers that one of the Ordo Lebes is Helen Beckitt, whom he has had problems with in the past. Although she cooperates with Harry and Murphy and doesn't even deny her prison record, Dresden just can't bring himself to trust her. When he discovers that she works for John Marcone, both Harry and Murphy become suspicious of her behavior.
Harry meets another old acquaintance on this case. Elaine had been his first girl, but they had parted after Harry killed their mentor. While the White Council ruled that the killing was in self-defense, Elaine was already gone. Yet she had not forgotten him and even followed his career path as a consulting wizard.
This story also has a minor side plot involving the fallen angel Lasciel. The shadow of Lasciel residing in his mind provides some useful services, such as translation of dead languages, but is still trying to seduce him to the evil side. It occurs to Harry that such seduction can go both ways and he treats "Lash" as an almost trusted friend. Some surprising changes occur.
While Harry doesn't really like being a Warden of the White Council, he hasn't considered it as a handicap. Then a mysterious Grey Cloak is noticed as somehow involved with the dead witches and everybody is afraid to tell Harry. And his brother Thomas is often observed with these victims shortly before their death or disappearances. Being an enforcer for the Council is bad enough without the paranormal community wondering whether you are responsible for these passings.
Highly recommended for Butcher fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of preternatural creatures, paranormal individuals, and strange happenings.

The Dresden File books have maintained their quality and readability. This one is no exception. Love the way these stories play out.
Love harry but need more Bob the Skull.......2007-09-05
I love this series and enjoy the way it is going. Harry is amusing and this one does not disappoint. I do miss Bob the Skull. He was not featured as much in this one and i miss that... just my own personal quirk.

Book Description
With his characteristic investigative eye and Menckenesque prose,
R. Emmett Tyrrell Jr. sheds new light on Bill Clinton's post-presidential emotional depression, globe trotting and international deal-making, financial ties to China and the United Arab Emirates, ongoing womanizing, vital support role in Hillary Clinton's anticipated run for the White House, and possible role as America's first "First Man."
Customer Reviews:
Tyrell: American Sphincter.......2007-09-19
Moron Tyrell is yet another wingnut who can't accept that Clinton is gone. They must all have a secret yearning for Hillary in '08 to make their pathetic lives seem worthwhile. Maybe they're all in denial after seven years of G. W. Dumbass and the weekly scandals of his crooks and cronies.
Clinton Crackup.......2007-09-19
While I hated to see Clinton move into the presidency, and, of course, hated his actions even more following Lewinsky, it's a wonder that we still have a country at all. I most certainly would not buy anything that might give him (or her, for that matter) any type of grace, and only scanned the pages at a local bookstore. That was quite enough for me, thank you very much. Now, unfortunately, it looks as though Miseries Clinton might be our next president. Hold onto your wallets, people!
Well done - Emmett needs a thesaurus though.......2007-09-07
No secret that Tyrrell does not like the Clintons. Somehow, those supporting Clinton have a big problem with a book like this and have NO problem with books claiming Bush knew about 9/11, Bush is in tight with the Saudis, etc.
If nothing else, this book is VERY thorough. There were times when I was reading it that I thought "How did the editor let THAT stay in the book?"
Tyrrell has a habit of writing to an MBA level. Which I guess is ok but there are those of us who, while having a complete control of the English language, we don't feel the need to try to impress people with it.
So many times, I read this thinking the author could have used a different word to mean the same thing and not come across as high-brow. Bill Buckley can get away with - he's about the only one.
Bottom line - the book is solid reading, powerful, and damning to Bill and Hillary.
Too Much of the Clintons is Never Enough.......2007-08-30
Sure, the title is hyperbolic, the writing has little of that flinty incisiveness of muckrakers like Tarbell and Sinclair, a good deal of the material is old news, the editing could have been better, but, oh, what fun! For political junkies like me, Our Bill and his lovely Life Partner are simply the gifts that keep on giving. As the wide diversity and vigor of reviewers' reactions demonstrate, love 'em or hate 'em, they are simply fascinating.
Now, one can't expect the shenanigans of Post-Prez Bill to be as interesting as his time in the Oval Office if only because, for instance, there has bobbed to the surface no stained women's clothing--yet. Nonetheless, the mind reels and the spirit soars as Tyrrell not only revisits the low crimes and misde-wieners of the Clintons' time in the Arkansas governor's mansion and the White House, but takes us on a poignant tour of Our Bill's meanderings in the real world, i.e., the world where his only power derives from political suasion and the relentless pursuit of greater wealth. If nothing else, Tyrrell's listing of the President's last-minute pardons and commutations, complete with the crimes committed by those receiving those astonishing absolutions, is worth the price of admission. No one, least of all Bill himself, has ever explained or rationalized how these low-lives deserved legal reclamation, justifying the inevitable conclusion of critics then and now that they were exchanged for past, present, or future consideration, much of it brokered by the Clinton and Rodham siblings.
And then there's Hillary. Just as I conclude my reading, what breaks but another campaign contribution imbroglio involving The Hill. Turns out that Norman Hsu, one of the Mrs.'s large contributors for the last several years, is a wanted fugitive from California justice and is somehow related to the Paw family of Daly City, several members of whom have made contributions coincident with those of Mr. Hsu which may or may not have been illegally funded by the latter. Mr. Paw, also Chinese, is a mail carrier, and yet the family has somehow found 45 G's to give to The Hill. The eyes tear and the throat constricts with mirth as one of the Paw family members turns out to be named Winkle. (Does the Supreme Being stay up at night devising names for those involved in Clinton scandals, you know the rich Marc Rich, et al? Does Winkle have siblings named Blinkle and Nod? But I digress.)
Astute readers will recall that Our Bill had some problems with Chinese contributors during his reign. One might have thought that those painful experiences would have convinced the Clintons they should limit their Chinese contacts to calling for take-out, but I guess not.
I'm not saying your life won't be complete if you don't read this book, but I found it a very enjoyable meander through these troubled lives. Think of it as a between-meal snack as we await The Hill's nomination for the presidency. Then it can serve as a reference point for the inevitable--and entirely justified--dredging up of the Clinton scandals by the Hillary Haters. Pray with me to the political gods that all this comes to pass: it will be a great 2008!
The Clinton Crackup.......2007-08-23
I have read the book. Tyrell is a gifted writer who records the continuing docu-drama of Bill Clinton's life. Coming away from this book there is the sense of flawed personality aspects outweighing good ones. I,too, wonder why people continue to find Clinton viable, attractive and charming. He is much to be pitied. Are Bill and Hillary a sign of the times - the narcissistic epitome of anything goes?
What Bill does fascinates us all - some love him, some don't. He "is" a national security leak and the continuing saga confirms it. One thing the book makes clear - if you set your sights on a particular goal and then
work towards it you will achieve it. Bill and Hillary had been working a long time to achieve their ambition. Though he did not win by a majority, other forces helped in the achievement of Bill's amibition.
These 2 people are very focused individuals. The truth of their lives is appallingly clear. If we are a product of our times, what does that say
about the kind of people we elect to high office. And how did we get to this cultural state of affairs.

Book Description
Doc Ford faces his greatest challenge ever, in the stunning new novel by the New York Times-bestselling writer.
Book after book, Randy Wayne White's audience and critical acclaim continue to grow. His most recent thriller, Dark Light, was "one of his brightest novels" (South Florida Sun Sentinel), "darkly marvelous" (Miami Herald), "a compelling readable tale in the justly celebrated Doc Ford series by one of this country's premier crime novelists" (Booklist). With Hunter's Moon, White is ready to take another giant leap.
On a foggy, tropic October night, the full moon burning through the mist, I stopped paddling when I heard unexpected voices. Muted whispers, neither English nor Spanish, the voices of men moving in stealth. They shouldn't have been here. I shouldn't have been here. There were plausible explanations, but I didn't like any of them.
When Ford saves from assassination a controversial former President of the United States who is staying on an island off Florida's west coast, he has no idea what he's just let himself in for. Kal Wilson knows that he has only a short time to live, and he has a full agenda. Just months before, his wife was killed in a plane crash while carrying medical supplies to Nicaragua - a tragic accident, everyone agreed, except Wilson is sure it was no accident, and he intends to do something about it. All he needs right now is someone to spring him loose from his security detail, keep him alive for two weeks, and then get him back. And that someone is Ford...whether he likes it or not....
Rich with passion and vivid, pungent prose and some of the best characters found in suspense fiction today, Hunter's Moon is White's most remarkable novel yet.
Customer Reviews:
Hunter's Moon.......2007-09-25
I have read every one of RWW's novels, and much of his non-fiction. At a booksigning once, someone asked him how he writes so much, and he countered (to that literary audience) with, "how COULDN'T you write if you have it in you?"
He is a certified character with a fascinatiing background. He is among the few writers I watch for new novels from and then read with gusto. He isn't far behind JK Rowling in my need to keep the story going.
I guess it's clear that I am a fan. THIS novel is the best he's produced in a long time, if not ever. He has wonderful character development, and has managed to keep his protagonists fresh. I loved Hunter's Moon.
I would recommend it highly.
One of his best.......2007-08-18
I've been following Doc Ford's adventures for years and have enjoyed White's ability to create such a dynamic character. In Hunter's Moon, Ford gets the chance to confront yet another demon from his past- this time alongside an ex-president. While the plot may at first glance seem like a lot to tackle, in White's capable hands it is beautifully executed and the ending is spectacular. Whether new to the Doc Ford thrillers or a returning reader, Hunter's Moon is a must. This is truly one of his best.
Avoid, Avoid, Avoid.......2007-07-28
Unless you enjoy books with ridiculous plots, characters that are undefined and absurd, and a story that doesn't begin to do what little it does until well into the book, don't buy this book. I'm not familiar with other books by the author, and given my opinions of this one, I cannot imagine finding out. Boy, is this a bad book.
Not the Doc Ford That We Are Used To.......2007-07-25
I have read 12 of the 14 books in the series. Obviously, I love Doc Ford. But his character in this book is different. He leaves Dinkins Bay and his lab with not a look back. He does not long for the solitude of his work. He doesn't express any angst about killing.
If you are new to the Doc Ford series, do not make this your first book to read. Try Shark River or Tampa Burn first.
Hunter's Moon.......2007-07-06
Ok R.W., you're back on track with this one. The extra work(rewrites, editing), is obvious in the polish of the finished book. And taking your time to write a proper ending, one that is deliberate but not a drag, is especially appreciated.
For fans who are new to Randy Wayne White's work, I envy you all the great reads you have in order to catch up on all of the adventures of Doc Ford and the zanies of Dinkin's bay. I've anchored my trawler in that bay(real name Tarpon Bay), many times and no one gets the flavor of those islands like White.

Composition teachers throughout the English-speaking world have been pushing this book on their students since it was first published in 1957. Co-author White later revised it, and it remains the most compact and lucid handbook we have for matters of basic principles of composition, grammar, word usage and misusage, and writing style.
Book Description
This is the braille version of the timeless reference book. According to the St. Louis Dispatch, this "excellent book, which should go off to college with every freshman, is recognized as the best book of its kind we have." It should be the ". . . daily companion of anyone who writes for a living and, for that matter, anyone who writes at all" (Greensboro Daily New). "No book in shorter space, with fewer words, will help any writer more than this persistent little volume" (The Boston Globe). Two volumes in braille.

The book was in wonderful condition. It arrived in a timely manner. I would buy from you again.
Great guide for writers of all ages.......2007-09-25
My son's teacher recommended this book when he was in middle school. He still refers to it in college as he pursues his writing career. My daughter needed her own copy for school because her brother wouldn't give his up! You really can't go wrong with this book.
Good book........2007-09-07
It is good book, but you might find some styles are repeating with other books. It is good to learn from this author, but I also suggest learn more from other authors, too.
Read it, Then Read It Again.......2007-09-06
This itsy bitsy tome is an ageless classic. I read it for the first time 20 years ago. Despite having never found grammar interesting before, I became hooked on the sharp little lessons. I read it again, to both delight and edification. And I'll read it once more, to remind myself of the rules that make English what it is and to smile at Prof. Strunk, long gone but very much alive in these pugnacious 80 pages. He's somehow managed to boil down the bones of the language and give you the absolute essentials. If you haven't read it, you're in for a treat and a pleasant surprise, especially if you don't care for grammar. This is truly short and sweet.
Elements of Style review.......2007-09-05
This is an excellent book. All authors (or soon to be authors) should consider adding it to their core readings.

Book Description
A Mormon in the White House? is the first book on Mitt Romney, his unusual faith story, and his viability as a Republican presidential nominee. Inside are exclusive interviews with the governor, his family, and closest associates, mixed with candid conversations with some of the country's shrewdest political observers and Christian leaders. Radio host and blogger Hugh Hewitt sets out to explain Romney, his faith, and the importance of that debate in a headline-making and election-shaping opening shot in the campaign before the campaign.
Customer Reviews:
A Mormon in the White House.......2007-09-16
This is one of the best books I have ever read since I have been studying about the candidates for 2008 President. Mitt's qualifications are excellent except the concern of his religious background. This book helps me to recognize him as a human being-- a noble citizen, just like anyone else in the country. I love this book. It gives a very specific explanations about Mitt. I highly recommend every American read this book if he/she really cares about the future of his/her country.
A Mormon in the White House.......2007-09-04
An excellent insight into the man running for President, his character and his qualifications. It is very positive presentation. Before discounting this candidate, every voter should read this book.
A Political Advertisement - Nothing More.......2007-08-30
A far more interesting book would be the Top Ten political issues Mitt has flip-flopped on to win the Republican nomination (granted, it may be difficult to narrow the list down to 10!).
A smart and slick politician, Mitt Romney is.
A man of principles and integrity, Mitt Romney ain't.
I LUV THE GOV........2007-08-29
Absolutely! And so does my mom.
I once said, I don't love the Gov, when I lived in Massachusetts for 13 years. I have since changed my views 180 degrees. The transformation has come about gradually and no one has tried to change my previous affiliation through argument. When Romney says Massachusetts is a blue state, I can verify that he is telling you the absolute truth!
A few years before I moved to Georgia, I met with others in my community about a local business that I had had dealings and was terribly upset, wanted to join others in speaking out, etc. The business was in Belmont, the town where Mitt Romney and his family live. I said something negative about him and a gentleman who was sympathetic to my grievances said simply that he was a good man and that he had done a lot for the community, the schools, one of his children knew one of his kids, but he didn't try to coerce me or argue and the subject was changed. That sort of response had a big impact on my thinking. I think back on that a lot. I could 'count the ways' for you of how I have come to the conclusion that I will not vote for a Democrat for President in 2008, but the real icing on the cake has happened since I moved to Georgia. Frankly, the Democrats scare me these days what with Jimmy Carter's racially provocative book titled Peace, Not Aparteid implying the embattled, bloodied jews are racist, etc. etc. and finally Nancy Pelosi getting cozy with the most rabid terrorist regimes in the Mideast. Those two let fly the foulest, foul balls, that any truly American umpire would not only end the inning, but end the game.
The world is too dangerous right now to have such delicate matters as terrorism and peace be influenced by people whose motivation is political power and front page photos and news interviews. The Hank Aaron home run for me for the Republicans and Mitt Romney in particular was a few years back when I either heard or read that Mitt Romney was good friends with Benjamin Netanyahu. I thought they went to school together, but actually Romney was studying at Harvard getting his MBA/JD degree while Netanyahu was at MIT studying architecture.
This book is written by a christian friend of Romney's and, of course, is written to influence votes and so is biased in that regard. However, my mother and myself have not really heard anything out of Romney's mouth to make us uneasy, and the more we hear and see him speak, the more impressed we are of him. He is quietly confident and is inspiring. He has made his millions turning companies around and getting them to succeed financially and not by playing the stock market and thereby forcing companies to fold.
I was surprised and pleased by the interviews the author had with two doctorate in theology students who reasoned why a christian could vote for a Mormon who's theology is a bit off. To me, he has lived what he believes, and in my mind, has lived the christian life as Christ taught. His record is spotless, and I'm convinced he could handle the Presidency. My mother always has commented on how that job takes a toll on whoever has it. You can see how they age so much in four years, and Bush these days looks pretty bushed. He's had a rough time with this congress.
Anyway, I do love the Gov and do your homework. I'm going to this time around and expect to see some more reviews from me about Giuliani and McCain and maybe Thompson. I consider myself now an independent!
good book about great candidate.......2007-08-29
Hewitt if fair and balanced in his analysis of Mitt Romney's candidacy. The book is about more than just Mormonism, it addresses many of Romney's strengths and weaknesses as we approach these upcoming elections. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in learning more about Mitt Romney

The Guru of Psychological Thriller.......2007-09-15
Stephen White did a very good job in Dry Ice. This book is gripping, enthralling, and mesmerizing, all at once. The characters are very real, they speak to you. They have their own complexities......and SECRETS yearning to be revealed. Read this book to feel and touch the mysterious dryness of the ice. Cold Eyes
Alan Gregory is like a lot of us........2007-08-29
Despite being a clinical psychologist, Dr. Gregory at times finds life challenging as he continues to relive the memories of a horrendous childhood trauma. Alan tries to bury them, however it is difficult to do so when a madman, bent on revenge, reenters his life upon escaping from a mental institution. This psychotic genious will do just about anything to ruin both Alan, Sam, his detective friend, and Lauren, Alan's ill wife who is an assistant district attorney. My only problem with the story is Alan's unwillingness to not tell anyone about his past despite the fact he was an innocent child when the incident occurred. This, somewhat unbelievable denial lays the groundwork for what remains a pretty credible and interesting story.
Stephen White hits his target again.......2007-07-04
I am a big fan of White and love his books--every one. And this was not a disappointment. It was great to have Alan Gregory back again. And all those secrets? Wow------who knew?
The humor is fun and witty. The story keeps you guessing and waiting to see what was going to happen next. A true page turner with surprises at almost every turn.
And the ending-----I won't give it away----but could lead to another sequel and continuing story with the characters we love in this one: Alan, Sam, Lauren just to name a few.
Sit back and enjoy this one---it's a fun read.
Everybody's waiting...........2007-06-24
For former villain Michael McClelland to seek revenge on the those from Boulder who sent him to the State Mental Hospital some 15 years before (As told in Stephen White's series intorduction, "Privileged Information"). McClelland is a charming sociopath, capable of almost anything, and seeking revenge.
And while we wait, with White's hero, Alan Gregory, for McClelland's onslaught, McClelland quietly and insidiously finds ways to begin to destroy Alan's way of life, along with those of the deputy DA (Alan's wife Lauren) and the cop (Alan's friend Sam Purdy)who helped bring him to justice. "Dry Ice" proves that everyone we have watched through the first 14 books in the series, has a secret that has not yet risen to the surface. And in wrenching out those secrets over the course of this, the 15th book, White keeps us eagerly turning pages.
Some will be disappointed by the human frailities of White's major characters -- some will be angry that the story wraps with so many loose ends, some will want McClelland's revenge to be more forceful and straight forward...but most, if not all, of White's faithful readers will find "Dry Ice" chock full of expert plotting and subtle nuance as White takes his characters in a slightly different direction for the future.
Significantly different than earlier installments..........2007-06-03
Seems like all my "fun" books came in to the library all at once. I was looking forward to Dry Ice by Stephen White, a continuation of the Alan Gregory series. It's quite a bit different than the others, and I don't think I liked it as much...
In the latest episode, Gregory is a prime suspect in the disappearance of a star witness in a grand jury case being worked by his wife. When one of his newer patients commits suicide in a manner linked with the first case, Gregory finds himself under the scrutiny of people he once considered friends. He suspects that the mastermind behind all these events is a deranged killer that he helped put behind bars. The guy has escaped, and now the killer is leaving calling cards for Gregory. Compounding all the legal stressors is a growing estrangement from his wife. She suspects him of carrying on an affair, and her work for the district attorney's office is jeopardized by Gregory's legal issues. He has no choice but to try and find the killer himself, primarily to clear his name and stop the assault on his personal and emotional life.
The story has a fair amount of intrigue and suspense in it. But the deterioration of his marriage and his "secret" that the killer threatens to reveal is not very well defined throughout the plot. It's such a radical departure from the normal character roles that you have to step back and readjust your expectations. In every series, you're going to have some titles that are better than others. And occasionally you need to do something very different in order to advance the overall plot and character development. This one might have been a bit *too* far for fans of Alan Gregory. But having said that, it's still worth reading if you've kept up with the series over the years...

Book Description
Meet Denver, a man raised under plantation-style slavery in Louisiana in the 1960s; a man who escaped, hopping a train to wander, homeless, for eighteen years on the streets of Dallas, Texas. No longer a slave, Denver's life was still hopeless-until God moved. First came a godly woman who prayed, listened, and obeyed. And then came her husband, Ron, an international arts dealer at home in a world of Armani-suited millionaires. And then they all came together.
But slavery takes many forms. Deborah discovers that she has cancer. In the face of possible death, she charges her husband to rescue Denver. Who will be saved, and who will be lost? What is the future for these unlikely three? What is God doing?
Same Kind of Different As Me is the emotional story of their story: a telling of pain and laughter, doubt and tears, dug out between the bondages of this earth and the free possibility of heaven. No reader will ever forget it.

What a Great Read!.......2007-10-10
This book was recommended by a colleague and I could not find it here in Key West. I ordered two copies from Amazon and gave them both to friends (after reading). I was moved to tears by parts of the book. If anybody has any concerns about homeless issues, this book will renew one's faith in what can be done. It is one of the finest books on homeless issues that I have read in many years.
Very touching.......2007-10-01
This is a very readable book. It is also extremely touching. Several times as I read,I found tears streaming down my face. It will restore your faith in mankind and that there is more to a person than meets the eye.
A must read book.......2007-09-29
I don't have proper words to express this "amazing" book.
I can now better understand how it used to be in Slave times,
and feel a better understanding of my own faith and life after death.
I cried at moments of revealation! Would help anyone become a believer.
This book changed my life!.......2007-09-25
It's very easy to forget that this is a true story - it is such an amazing story that it could be fiction! It's a beautiful, poignant, touching book and it changed the way I view the homeless and how I share my resources with others. LOVED IT and I've been telling everyone I know to read it too!!
book.......2007-09-18
I ordered this book for my husband who had heard it was wonderful. He thought it was the best book he had ever read and he highly recommends it!!

Book Description
One Thousand White Women is the story of May Dodd and a colorful assembly of pioneer women who, under the auspices of the U.S. government, travel to the western prairies in 1875 to intermarry among the Cheyenne Indians. The covert and controversial "Brides for Indians" program, launched by the administration of Ulysses S. Grant, is intended to help assimilate the Indians into the white man's world. Toward that end May and her friends embark upon the adventure of their lifetime. Jim Fergus has so vividly depicted the American West that it is as if these diaries are a capsule in time.

Wild story from the wild west.......2007-10-08
May Dodd is the daughter of a wealthy family in Chicago who humiliates them by running off with her lover and having two children by him without marrying. Her family has her committed to an asylum as her indiscretion could only be caused by insanity. But she is ultimately given an opportunity to gain her freedom from the asylum - she must relocate west and become the bride of a Cheyenne Indian.
Little Wolf is the Cheyenne Chief who proposes to President Grant that the two nations trade 1000 white women for 1000 horses. It is Little Wolf's belief that by having children with the white brides that the offspring will bring the Cheyenne closer to the white world and thus begin the process of assimilation. The US Government takes the Indian Nation up on its offer in secret sending only those women who volunteer or want the freedom to escape their current lives, such as women in asylums and jails. May Dodd jumps on this opportunity and becomes a leader amongst the other women who believe the west has something to offer.
This novel is comprised of the journal entries of May Dodd and letters that she writes to loved ones back home understanding that they will never be mailed. Her writing chronicles the daily life of the Cheyenne from the elaborate wedding ceremony the white women experience, to the everyday chores and friendships that are born on the vast prairies. It is a unique look at how the Native American life may have been in the late 1800s, but also provides a sharp contrast between that life and that of the whites. The story is not without conflict and does a good job of presenting the perspective of the Native American as the white man trampled over their lands and customs.
Something about this book just didn't grab me and hold on. It was interesting and informative, but I had trouble buying into the May Dodd character. She was a bit too strong willed to be plausible. While others around her experienced terrifying fear, she almost brushes her own experience with fear and danger aside too callously. Not to say that she didn't acknowledge the people and circumstances that scared her, but it was minimized in such a way that it became hard to read her as a believable character. The story is moving, but was missing something that is hard to put a finger on.
Engrossing read.......2007-10-06
I loved this book! At the very beginning I was a bit skeptical but once I got into it I couldn't stop listening. I read some other reviews that mentioned finding men writing in a woman's voice not believable but I disagree. An author is a story teller and can tell a story from many perspectives, you need to use your imagination... it's fiction! After only a little way into the book I was immersed in the time, place and beauty of the setting. I loved the characters, a lot of variety and different peronalities. The Native American way of life was quite interesting and although this book was written in a plain spoken way it really came alive for me. I would highly suggest this book to anyone. It's an easy read and I think a "page turner."
Loved it.......2007-10-03
I loved this book and am so sad that it ended. I hope his other books are as good as this one because I really liked his writing style. I read all the time and this is the best book I have read in a long time. Once I picked it up I couldn't put it down. I would highly reccomend it!
Great read with unexpected story line.......2007-10-03
I asked some friends what was the best thing they'd read lately. When they mentioned the title of this book I could not imagine what it was about and visualized something like the Million Man March...in reverse? :-)
Even when they told me a bit of the plot line I wasn't sure about "One Thousand White Women". But they said they couldn't put it down so I gave it a try. I loved it - so much so that I bought it as a gift for someone else. The book intertwines a bit of a real story with 'what might have been'. I found myself so engrossed in the book that I forgot it was fiction...and wished it wasn't.
one of the best.......2007-10-02
One of the best books I've read in a long time! Right up there with Memoirs of a Geisha, from the point of view of a man writing as a woman and getting it so perfectly. Also because, like Geisha, the book transports you to another place and time and you feel like you have met a whole bunch of new friends. Read it!!!!

Customer Reviews:
an introductory text.......2007-07-29
This book and the workbook were required for a machine shop class I took. The Amazon description is pretty accurate. It is written for someone in a vocational training program who will be working in the industry rather than a home workshop. The book covers a lot of material, but doesn't go into depth on any of it. Its a pretty good introductory book, but its kind of expensive. I wouldn't have bought it if it wasn't required for the class. If you are just interested in learning to operate a certain machine, like a mill or lathe, or if you are interested in machining as a hobby I think there are probably better books. I am giving it 3 stars because of the high price, and many of the photos are not high enough quality, especially considering the price.
well organised and illustrated.Lacking in metric info........1998-06-21
I find this book clear and easy to read on machining topics. The photographs and illustrations fit well with the text. Generally a worthwhile beginners to intermediate book for pre apprentice to 3rd year. However in future editions I would like to see ISO metric information on topics such as threads and tapers along with limits and fits. I would also like to see a change to more up to date toolposts and tool holders for the lathes.
