Book Description

Eagerly anticipated by her legions of fans, this sixth novel in Diana Gabaldon’s bestselling Outlander saga is a masterpiece of historical fiction from one of the most popular authors of our time.

Since the initial publication of Outlander fifteen years ago, Diana Gabaldon’s New York Times bestselling saga has won the hearts of readers the world over — and sold more than twelve million books. Now, A Breath of Snow and Ashes continues the extraordinary story of 18th-century Scotsman Jamie Fraser and his 20th-century wife, Claire.

The year is 1772, and on the eve of the American Revolution, the long fuse of rebellion has already been lit. Men lie dead in the streets of Boston, and in the backwoods of North Carolina, isolated cabins burn in the forest.

With chaos brewing, the governor calls upon Jamie Fraser to unite the backcountry and safeguard the colony for King and Crown. But from his wife Jamie knows that three years hence the shot heard round the world will be fired, and the result will be independence — with those loyal to the King either dead or in exile. And there is also the matter of a tiny clipping from The Wilmington Gazette, dated 1776, which reports Jamie’s death, along with his kin. For once, he hopes, his time-traveling family may be wrong about the future.

5 out of 5 stars So far as I know, this is the last in the series.......2007-09-22

I've seen some negative comments about The Fiery Cross - and there is an explanation for its being less than Gabaldon fans have come to expect. It's not my business to explain it and that's all I'm going to say. If you want more of Claire and Jamie, you'd better start over - I just did. AND, you can always buy The Outlandish Companion or the Lord John Grey novels.

4 out of 5 stars Good ending to the series.......2007-09-14

Finally the last epic of Claire and Jamie, Diana G has compleded the series in a good way, I was satisfied with the completion, it was time for the end to come, after all how many war's could Jamie still conquer! Good read, recommend.

4 out of 5 stars A Breath of Snow and Ashes (Outlander).......2007-08-24

Another really good read from Diana Gabaldon. It turns out I had already read this book but all her books of this series are worth a second or third read. I have already re-read the other books from this series and wish she would get the next book done and quit keeping us in suspense.

5 out of 5 stars love, love, love, Diana's writing.......2007-08-02

I have absolutely fallen in love with this series! I read all six books within one month. I can't get enough of Jamie and Claire; other historical romance novels pale in comparison. The whole series is in depth both historically and emotionally. I can't wait until the next two books come out! Please continue writing Diana!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Expect withdrawal symptoms ...... .......2007-07-28

Before I read this volume, I held it in my hands and gazed at it feeling a little sad that I had come to the end of the series (so far). Because of this, I took this one REAL slow. Corny I know - you dont have to tell me, but still, I tell you no lies.

If your looking at this review I am assuming you have read the other books in the series, so my final statement below will be something I guess you could possibly relate to:
****
My belly was full to the brim with hearty chunks left over from The Fiery Cross, therefore, Snow and Ashes finished me of nicely, like good Port after a satisfying meal. Since I'm comparing it to a flavoursome drop, like all good spirits, I was left wanting more.

Actually, I would have sold a kidney for just one more drop, but as usual, Mrs. Gabaldon knows when you've had enough and how to make you want more (much more).

My advice with this one tho is: Sip it. Take your time with it's pages and let the story tell itself to you, rather than raking your eyes over the words. After all, it takes a few years for Diana to write each volume for the series, so if you're up to this part .... why rush.

If you do decide to pump through the pages, you'll risk feeling high and dry at the end. And since there is not another volume to follow YET, you will be waiting anyway, so you might as well take your time.

In closing, I absolutely loved it, as I have loved them all, and I sincerely hope you enjoy it also.

Until next time - Cheers Jo

"Worse than the ordinary miserable childhood is the miserable Irish childhood," writes Frank McCourt in Angela's Ashes. "Worse yet is the miserable Irish Catholic childhood." Welcome, then, to the pinnacle of the miserable Irish Catholic childhood. Born in Brooklyn in 1930 to recent Irish immigrants Malachy and Angela McCourt, Frank grew up in Limerick after his parents returned to Ireland because of poor prospects in America. It turns out that prospects weren't so great back in the old country either--not with Malachy for a father. A chronically unemployed and nearly unemployable alcoholic, he appears to be the model on which many of our more insulting cliches about drunken Irish manhood are based. Mix in abject poverty and frequent death and illness and you have all the makings of a truly difficult early life. Fortunately, in McCourt's able hands it also has all the makings for a compelling memoir.

Book Description

"When I look back on my childhood I wonder how I managed to survive at all. It was, of course, a miserable childhood: the happy childhood is hardly worth your while. Worse than the ordinary miserable childhood is the miserable Irish childhood, and worse yet is the miserable Irish Catholic childhood."

So begins the luminous memoir of Frank McCourt, born in Depression-era Brooklyn to recent Irish immigrants and raised in the slums of Limerick, Ireland. Frank's mother, Angela, has no money to feed the children since Frank's father, Malachy, rarely works, and when he does he drinks his wages. Yet Malachy -- exasperating, irresponsible and beguiling -- does nurture in Frank an appetite for the one thing he can provide: a story. Frank lives for his father's tales of Cuchulain, who saved Ireland, and of the Angel on the Seventh Step, who brings his mother babies.

Perhaps it is story that accounts for Frank's survival. Wearing rags for diapers, begging a pig's head for Christmas dinner and gathering coal from the roadside to light a fire, Frank endures poverty, near-starvation and the casual cruelty of relatives and neighbors -- yet lives to tell his tale with eloquence, exuberance and remarkable forgiveness.

Angela's Ashes, imbued on every page with Frank McCourt's astounding humor and compassion, is a glorious book that bears all the marks of a classic.

5 out of 5 stars Angela's Ashes: Irish I was Reading This!.......2007-09-21

Imagine being crammed into a one bedroom home with two siblings, an alcoholic father, an exhausted mother, a flooded downstairs, and the constant threat of tuberculosis, or even worse, death knocking at your door. On top of it all, imagine being so poor that going days without food is normal and an egg can be considered a delicacy. No matter how difficult that is to imagine, it was nevertheless the life of young Frank McCourt.
Frankie grows up in the slums of Ireland where begging is commonplace and children must find jobs at the age of 14 in order to support their entire family. Frankie struggles to overcome his destitute life, the death of three siblings, and a father who drinks away all of the money needed in order for the rest of the family to survive. This is the world that you experience as you begin reading Angela's Ashes, a true-life memoir of Frank McCourt.
Angela's Ashes takes place during the Great Depression where poverty runs rampant through the streets and even the most proud of families is reduced to begging in order to get a simple lump of coal. However, Frankie has the seemingly unrealistic dream of eventually travelling to America and starting his life anew. Throughout the course of the novel you are left wondering how Frankie can gain the physical or mental power to accomplish his goal.
One aspect of the novel which I found very intriguing is Frank's use of "comic relief" in order to keep his otherwise depressing life hopeful and at least somewhat upbeat. Mikey Molloy, a cross-eyed friend of Frank who suffers from "fits" (seizures), is one such example of this sporadic humor. Frank even recounts one time when Mikey fakes one of his fits in order to sneak into the movie theater. "...I'll pretend to have the fit and the ticket man will be out of his mind and you can slip in when I let out the big scream...That's what I do to get my brothers in all the time." Scenes like this really kept me smiling throughout the sadness in Angela's Ashes.
McCourt's writing style also provides a relieving mixture of both comedy and sorrow. At one point, Frankie contracts typhoid fever and describes his experience with the doctor in charge. "It's dark and Dr. Campbell's sitting by my bed...He tilts over on the chair and farts and smiles to himself and I know now I'm going to get better because a doctor would never fart in the presence of a dying boy." Through the innocence and naivety of Frank's voice, I felt as though I could really understand and feel what the author was feeling while recounting his life.
Despite all of the comedy throughout this novel, the author never loses sight of the main aspect of the story: the sorrow. Frank basically has to support his entire family by himself at a very young age because his dad is always at the bar drinking away every penny he earns. From the age of three to nineteen, Frankie moves from one house to the next, and each time the conditions get worse and worse to the point where Frank and his family have to live next to an outhouse which is shared by the entire street they live on. Not only that, but Frank's mother, Angela, has to spend all day scrounging the streets for whatever scraps she can find to help her family survive.
Angela's Ashes has become one of my favorite books. Although I would suggest it to a more mature audience due to some of its scenes, I would still recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about Frank McCourt's struggle growing up in Ireland. I would easily give this book an "A." I never lost interest in the plot no matter how depressing it was and the characters always kept me compelled to learn more about their plight and hardship. You'll laugh, you'll cry, and most importantly this book will make you appreciate what you have and realize that we have it pretty good here in America.

5 out of 5 stars A great read, an even better listen.......2007-09-04

This is one of those rare instances when listening to a book being read is better than reading it yourself. I bought this copy of the book for my daughter, who chose it as her summer reading assignment. Yet the version I treasure is the audiobook, read by the author himself. My daughter would not have read the book if I hadn't played the audiobook in the car. Your imagination can't do justice to that Limerick accent and wry delivery; you are hooked in the first two minutes. A warning: if you listen to it with a young child present, you are likely to have to answer a lot of embarrassing questions.

Of course it's a wonderful book: funny, poignant, heartwrenching... you can keep loading on the adjectives. It has its own music and rhythm as it moves from one small incident to the next, painting a picture of a childhood defined by unimaginable poverty. The narrative moves from a child's acceptance of his circumstances to the adolescent's ruthless determination to find a way out, while never abandoning the family that mean so much to him. And the author manages to accomplish this without a trace of sentimentality, and with plenty of deadpan humor. I would recommend this book - or audiobook - to anyone old enough to cope with its unrestrained language.

4 out of 5 stars Colorful portrayal of life as a poor Irish Catholic.......2007-09-03

McCourt was funny, witty and descriptive in every regard throughout this book. His first person account of being raised in a poor Irish Catholic community makes you glad to be raised in modern times in America. Read the book for an interesting insight into Europe over fifty years ago.

5 out of 5 stars What a Story!.......2007-08-26

I listened to the Recorded Books Unabridged version of this on tape--narrated by the author. What a treat! I'm sure it must have been better than reading it myself. I cried and sometimes I giggled and belly laughed. Many have reviewed the book and most were riveted to it as I was. How I wished I could have scooped up those kids and given them a good life.

5 out of 5 stars 'Tis indeed..........2007-07-27

I've meant to read this book for years. Now, however, was the just-right time for it. I cried, despaired, railed in my head, laughed myself silly... In a voice of unflinching honesty and innocence, Frank McCourt details his life as the son of an alcoholic yet sometimes caring father from Northern Ireland and the woman he fell for fresh off the boat from Ireland, Angela Sheehan from Limerick in the south. McCourt takes the reader on a journey from death, poverty and pain in New York City to more of the same in Ireland and back again. Settled simply between the aching hunger, hacking coughs and continual dampness are many universal questions about life, both on earth and after. I am breathless having finished it.

Book Description

Temperance Brennan, like her creator Kathy Reichs, is a brilliant, sexy forensic anthropologist called on to solve the toughest cases. But for Tempe, the discovery of a young girl's skeleton in Acadia, Canada, is more than just another assignment. Évangéline, Tempe's childhood best friend, was also from Acadia. Named for the character in the Longfellow poem, Évangéline was the most exotic person in Tempe's eight-year-old world. When Évangéline disappeared, Tempe was warned not to search for her, that the girl was "dangerous."

Thirty years later, flooded with memories, Tempe cannot help wondering if this skeleton could be the friend she lost so many years ago. And what is the meaning of the strange skeletal lesions found on the bones of the young girl?

Meanwhile, Tempe's beau, Ryan, investigates a series of cold cases. Three girls dead. Four missing. Could the New Brunswick skeleton be part of the pattern? As Tempe draws on the latest advances in forensic anthropology to penetrate the past, Ryan hunts down a serial predator.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Newest 'Bones' novel.......2007-10-05

This is the tenth Temperance Brennan novel. She is a North Carolina-born, Montreal-based forensic anthropologist. In her childhood, she met and became great friends with an Acadian girl two years her senior. Then the friend, Evangeline, disappeared, along with her mother and sister. For the next few years, Tempe sought traces of her friend with no success.

Thirty years later, a skeleton is found, one of a young girl unearthed in Acadia. Immediately, Tempe theorizes it could be Evangeline. Meanwhile, a number of other missing girls flood the crime scene, with Tempe's partner tracking cold cases, two unidentified corpses and three missing persons. All teenage girls.

While working the cases, Tempe continues to obsess over the possibility that the skeleton is that of her friend. She locates Evangeline's sister in Acadia, who tells Tempe her friend was murdered 30 years before. Some clues implicate the sister's husband, an operator of strip joints, among other shady dealings. Ryan and Hippo, another cop, and Tempe pursue the mysteries of the cold cases, and Tempe keeps up her hopes of identifying Evangeline.

As in previous novels, there is an abundance of forensic anthropological science, details of bone dissections and linguistic analyses, all of which prove useful in the process of solving the mysteries. The customary fast-paced writing and tight plotting brings the novel to an unanticipated conclusion

5 out of 5 stars Reichs Does It Again.......2007-10-04

The TV show Bones will NEVER be as good as its mentor series of books by Kathy Reichs. She has taken the job she holds so dear and the characters she has worked with over the years and made them more than life like. The latest book makes me yearn for longer books and many more of them. The woman is amazing. I want to know more about her love life, but the work she does as a forensic anthropologist is the real thing and the cutting edge of science. Waiting with great expectations for the next part of the series. Hope it is soon.

5 out of 5 stars More Bones.......2007-10-04

This is the latest in Kathy Reich's series about Tempe Brennan. It is, as usual, a great mystery, and loads of fun following the engaging characters. In addition, this series has a lot to teach about forensic anthropology, things that are intelligent without being excessively deep or "teach-y." I have loved this series, and I am sure I will continue to get the books as they come out. I look forward to them. It's also been fun to follow the tv series, which really has a different feel from the books - of course, I'm a confirmed bibliophile, and I like to develop my own visions from the printed word. While the tv series is great, IT does the vision creation.

3 out of 5 stars Too much jargon!.......2007-10-03

I have very much enjoyed Kathy Reichs' books over the years and have read every one. This time I was a bit disappointed. I found the medical explanations overly lengthy and too jargon-filled. I also found it annoying when French was used and not translated for the reader. I'll continue to read and enjoy the books about Tempe, but I'd like to see Ms. Reichs bring them back down to a more general reader level. Good book, though.

5 out of 5 stars great book.......2007-10-02

Kathy Reichs fans will not be disappointed! Twists and turns and surprise ending, all in one great story. You will not be disappointed !

5 out of 5 stars Offers Real Answers.......2007-08-08

Having been a victim of abuse Joyce is able to speak to others who have been abused on their level, not just from observation or education. She doesn't just leave the reader in the place of accepting that they have things they need to work through, but she leads them through the same steps she took by God's hand to receive that healing. I have used this book to lead a women's study group and have been wonderfully blessed to witness the changes that have come out of their applying these truths to their lives.

5 out of 5 stars Healing .......2007-07-05

I have read the book twice and found it very refreshing. I got a new copy for a friend that was sexually abused.

5 out of 5 stars Beauty For Ashes: Receiving Emotional Healing.......2007-05-17

This book is a benefit to anyone regardless of their history. Personally, I have had a emotional, trama filled life until God got a hold of me, but this book helps tie in God's Word an apply it to real life situations.

4 out of 5 stars A place for healing to begin.......2007-05-10

Joyce tells her story in a manner that is bold, courageous, and transparent. She holds nothing back; both her strengths and her shortcomings are displayed on the pages of Beauty for Ashes. This book helped me take a good look at myself and to then focus on the nature and promises of God. It helped me at a time when I was very ill and had faced many losses. (Author, With Great Mercy.)

5 out of 5 stars Living Proof.......2007-04-12

God brought this book into my life at just the right time. In reading this book I've finally been able to face the abuse of my past and start the road to recovery and healing. The Holy Spirit has moved in my life in an amazing way as a result of Joyce Meyer's teachings. I've been able to come to terms with horrible emotional pain and am experiencing the freedom of forgiveness towards myself and others. Through the wisdom I've gained I've already broken off a dysfunctional relationship and am growing stronger everyday in Christ. I now realize that my pain is my past and doesn't have to dictate my life now or in the future. I am free, I am whole, I am God's precious child and I am loved unconditionally by my Heavenly Father.

Joyce Meyer is offers very practical information. No fancy words or super spiritual mumbo jumbo that makes you feel like you can't apply these principles in your life. She makes sense, and she's been through it too.

I recommend this book for ANYONE who has endured any type of abuse: sexual, physical, emotional or verbal. Those memories, feelings and thoughts don't have to hold you in bondage any longer. Shame, guilt, rejection, sadness, depression, lonliness....you can allow the Holy Spirit to break these strongholds over your life.

I know...because I am living proof.

Book Description

Gregory Colbert's photographic artworks capture extraordinary moments of contact between man and animal.

Gregory Colbert has spent thirteen years filming and photographing elephants, whales, birds, and other animals in such places as India, Burma, Ethiopia, Sri Lanka, Kenya, Namibia, Egypt, the island of Dominica, Tonga, and Antarctica. Ashes and Snow, Colbert's lifelong project, is a collaboration with animals in their natural habitat as they interact with human beings. His images attempt to remove the boundaries between humans and other species—to re-awaken in us an understanding of our shared animal nature.

The New York exhibition catalog collects more than 190 images from the U.S. debut of Ashes and Snow on Pier 54 in New York City (March 5-June 6, 2005). The books were printed and bound in Italy; the covers are created out of handmade paper from Nepal which is sealed with natural beeswax; interior pages are printed on handmade Italian paper; each book is hand sewn and tied with thread stained with hibiscus tea leaves.

5 out of 5 stars More recent version: exhibition in Santa Monica, CA.......2006-03-29

I cannot highly enough recommend either the exhibit or any of the accompanying materials: books, poster, etc. We waited to see this for 2 years, until it went to CA.
I bought the full exhibition catalogue, the DVD of the 60 minute film and two posters and are extremely happy with everything. Everyone we show them to is excited and fascinated by the pictures and the artist.
I can't imagine being disappointed at all.

4 out of 5 stars The peripatetic mission of global unity.......2006-01-21

The Nomadic Museum, a facility constructed onsite in various locales (now in Santa Monica, CA) out of boxcars, cartons, and pipes is in itself an artwork and the peripatetic museum houses some wispy photographs by Gregory Colbert of moments of world observation that in context are strangely moving. The object is to bring the spirit of mankind into a space outside the usual exhibition venues and in doing so it becomes an experience for the people.

The catalogue that accompanies this show is equally impressive in its conception. No two books are alike in that they are created from handmade Italian paper and bound in a cover made from unique paper from Nepal. The photographs reproduced well in the catalogue languish from being reductions of the oversized images form the exhibition, but the flavor is there. Images of robed children and adults, animals both alone and in tandem with humans, bits and pieces of atmosphere form a journeyman's eye take on a significance that surpasses the original works.

The catalogue for the exhibition is pricey due tot he one of a kind quality of presentation. But for those who want to forgo the expense, there is also a version of the images (paperback with 48 pages as opposed to the 232 pages of this volume) available through this site. If you are unable to experience the exhibition (for that is truly what the exhibition is about) then this art book form of the catalogue is a substantive memento of a unique artistic experience. 5 out of 5 stars An incredible creation.......2005-10-01

I have collected photographic books over the past 30 years. This ranks among the top 3 books in my collection. It is simply stunning in its construction and in the uniqueness. The photographs are not only visually impressive but they simply speak to your soul. It has become quickly one of my favorite items to view. Strongly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A spectacularly beautiful book.......2005-08-05

This is one of the most moving books I have ever been blessed to put my eyeballs on. The images are haunting, poignant, irresistable, and inexpressibly beautiful. Their presentation in handmade italian paper, with the cover made from Nepalese paper, is breathtaking. I saw the exhibit in New York City, and would travel the six and a half hours (each way) by bus just to see this exhibit again. Absent my ability to do that, this beautiful little book will feed my heart and soul for years to come. Sure it is expensive. How often can you nourish your soul with beauty as compelling, as spiritual, as moving, as transcendant as this? It is worth every penny.

3 out of 5 stars NICE ATLAS, CUT-THROAT PRICE.......2003-03-30

The biggest obstacle in the way of this beautifully illustrated atlas is its rather unreasonable price-tag. Its publisher, (and authors), did overlook the fact that there are lots of moderately priced equivalents out there in the market.
Nevertheless, anyone who goes ahead and purchase this atlas will appreciate its versatile accomplishments. It is very practical, and included high resolution photographs and micrographs.
"Atlas of Human Parasitology" has a unique organization, which enabled it to provide comprehensive laboratory information. Every specimen it portrayed was labelled and analyzed in details. There is complementary taxonomical description in each case. This is a well-compiled atlas, but I still maintain that its price is a great barrier.

5 out of 5 stars A very good bench atlas.......2001-09-09

I use this book on the bench in the microbiology department and I find the clarity and amount of photos extreemly useful. The other good features are the lifecycles and the methods present within the book. The book is sturdily bound and printed on high quality paper I would recomend this book to any laboratory, or person interested in parasitology.

1 out of 5 stars The cheaper edicion is horrible.......2005-07-07

I bought theWheeler's Dental Anatomy, Physiology and Occlusion thinking that I was buying a pretty new edicion of a book with a CD and color pictures. What I recieved at home was an old book with horrible black and white pictures and an awful redaction. I don't know how newest edition is, but I am shure that this old one is almost not a text book.

5 out of 5 stars What a Dental Anatomy Book Should Not Be Without .......2005-06-14

Unfortunately some of the reviewers are steeped in subjective reality and probably the users and promoters of another dental anatomy text. In a period of evidence based dental education and practice, a book without much of a refernce base is outdated; a book with out a CD is outdated; a book without a good index is hardly useful; a book without the latest information on dental anatomy is outdated; and a book without facts to build on is no book at all.
Wheeler's 8th edition has none of these deficiences.

1 out of 5 stars Wheeler is no Netter!.......2005-01-29

This book is wordy and lacks organization. It is full of awkward sentences, rambling paragraphs and has no sense of continuity. The diagrams are not labeled, of low quality and seemingly outdated. There are much better anatomy references out there and I suggest looking into the other literature. Wheeler's text simply demonstrates the need for a Frank Netter of sorts- someone who can do for Oral Anatomy what Dr. Netter did for Gross Anatomy. I'm actually considering writing my own text one day so that future students will be able to spend more time focusing on anatomy rather than the minutia and distractions that this book is full of. If you need to learn Oral Anatomy this is not the book that will help.

3 out of 5 stars Unnecessary and Disorganized.......2005-01-23

Wheeler's Dental Anatomy, Physiology and Occlusion
by Major M. Ash

It is a good book with wealth of informations but also with lots of unnecessary details/ facts. One needs to wade through complete text material before discarding all extra material, a real difficult task for a first time learner of dental anatomy especially occlusion. Some of the previous criticisms are genuine. Yet this is the only book of its kind in the market. May be one of us (dentists) should embark upon the task of writing a better monologue/ text along with clear illustrations on dental anatomy, physiology and occlusion?

3 out of 5 stars Wheeler's Dental Anatomy.......2004-06-10

Dental anatomy is a tough subject to learn. The human dentition varies from person to person and from race to race. If you truly want to learn dental anatomy a text book by itself is not enough. Use models, typodonts, extracted teeth, and your own patients to further your understanding. You might have to purchase such items by yourself. You have to gain knowledge through experience. This book (previous edition, old exams, and dental decks) helped me to achieve a 99 percentile on NDBE Part I. I can't believe the lack of professionalism from the previous reviewers. They are an embarrassment to the profession of dentistry. Who cares if you are #2 in the class, too bad you are not #1 (Then we can take you seriously!). I would recommend this book only as a supplement to the learning of dental anatomy. You can not learn all there is about dentistry from a text book! Dental school only gives you the basics.

Book Description

Mathematicians solve equations, or try to. But sometimes the solutions are not as interesting as the beautiful symmetric patterns that lead to them. Written in a friendly style for a general audience, Fearless Symmetry is the first popular math book to discuss these elegant and mysterious patterns and the ingenious techniques mathematicians use to uncover them.

Hidden symmetries were first discovered nearly two hundred years ago by French mathematician Évariste Galois. They have been used extensively in the oldest and largest branch of mathematics--number theory--for such diverse applications as acoustics, radar, and codes and ciphers. They have also been employed in the study of Fibonacci numbers and to attack well-known problems such as Fermat's Last Theorem, Pythagorean Triples, and the ever-elusive Riemann Hypothesis. Mathematicians are still devising techniques for teasing out these mysterious patterns, and their uses are limited only by the imagination.

The first popular book to address representation theory and reciprocity laws, Fearless Symmetry focuses on how mathematicians solve equations and prove theorems. It discusses rules of math and why they are just as important as those in any games one might play. The book starts with basic properties of integers and permutations and reaches current research in number theory. Along the way, it takes delightful historical and philosophical digressions. Required reading for all math buffs, the book will appeal to anyone curious about popular mathematics and its myriad contributions to everyday life.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Let me Inject Some Reality into Discussion.......2007-08-05

In spite of some of the comments posted already and in spite of what is on the book's back cover - this is a math book - this is a serious math book. I personally don't see that average person getting anything out of this if they hadn't had say Linear Algebra in particular. Calculus is not required but higher alegra is.

The reason I bought this book is that I read Ian Stewert's book on Symmetry and Beauty and found it lacking as it was not very mathematical.
I was not dissapointed in the level of math in this book. If anything, I got overwhelmed by the end.

I call this type of book "drill deep" but not wide. I like that idea.

The author's have a real ambitious goal. It's laid out on pages 11 and 12:
"in this book we explore ..representations...we consider sets, groups, matrices and functions between them. We show you in detail in one particular case that we develop throughout the book that sets us to our goal: mod p linear representations of Galois groups."

THIS IS THE GOAL OF THIS BOOK. They are not kidding this is what the book sets out to do and I belive accomplishes.

The authors are true to this goal in the "drill deep" mode. Example: Chapter 2 is Groups - not everything about Group Theory is presented but enough that is needed for the rest of the book. In a similar manner one chapter is on so called reciprocity laws. Chapter 4 is on Modular Arithmetic a crucial aspect to this book.

One prior reviewer indicated that each chapter is far more difficult than the last; this is sortof the general tenure of the book - but with exceptions if you know that material. Example, Chapter 5, Complex Numbers, for me was a relief sandwiched in between Modular Artimetic and Equations and Varieties. I can attest that for the subject "Complex numbers" - that they treated it at a relativley elementary level and focused on just those aspects needed later on. I am sure that for all subjects like "Quadratric reciprocity" that was the case. However, if you hadn't been exposed to quadratic reciprocity and Legendre symbols it is a tough slog.

For me the high point of the book was Chapter 8, I felt that I understood the difficult concept of the the Absolute group of the field of algebraic numbers by the end of the chapter. It is an infinite group that only elements can really be enumerated - Identity and complex conjugation. It fills in some (but not all) of the points in the number line between the group of rational numbers and the line with no gaps the field of real numbers.

Chapters 13 to 22 my ability to follow went way downhill and I just skimmed to get some highpoints.

I might return to this book in the future. I like the idea of not having to learn every aspect of something like alebraic ring theory , then every aspect of permutation theory etc. but just learning enough to accomplish some higher level of understanding like ultimatley how Fermat's Last Therom was solved.

I would recomend Stwert's book on Symmetry and Beauty first if you feel you want a more general understanding of this subject as opposed to a real math book which this is.

4 out of 5 stars From the Earth to the stars.......2007-07-29

The book has a goal which is very difficult to reach: introducing people without every mathematical background to the contemporary research in Galois Theory, Number Theory and Diophantine Geometry. In such a situation it is always very hard to choose the best proofs to be written in the book, the best examples and the best way... Maybe, if was the author, I would have made more proofs in the second part of the book, and have chosen other examples for this part. However --- it is so light to criticize --- and the author achieved his goal in proportion of at least 80%, which is not less for an impossible goal!

5 out of 5 stars outstanding.......2007-06-27

This is a very good introduction to arithmetic that everyone wanting to be initiated in this important branch of mathematics should read.

The authors achieved something remarkable: they were able to communicate with accuracy the deepest concepts of arithmetic without the boring style of many mathematics textbooks. The book is very engaging, with nice reflections about the nature of mathematical thought, as well as the motivations behind the concepts.

The authors managed to have a gradual build up of difficulty of topics all the way
to the proof of Fermat's last Theorem. Unlike other introductory texts that let you down
because in their effort to be more engaging, end up too elementary, this one is perfectly balanced. I will also recommend the "Calculus Gallery" as a second outstanding book introducing Analysis.

It would be great if other branches of mathematics like mathematical physics, algebra, mathematical informatics etc had the privilege of such well balanced and insightful introductions.

Well done!

5 out of 5 stars Rare - a well written book about math .......2007-05-30

Unlike most math books, Fearless symmetry is well written. Key concepts from prior chapters are reemphasized in subsequent chapters so readers are less likely to get lost. This is the first book on groups and representation theory that made clear sense to me. I can see where galois therory is going and now have an understanding of the basic form of the proof of Fermat's last theorem.

1 out of 5 stars Definition Dump from Freshman Abstract Algebra Course.......2007-05-16

The book is simply a compilation of definitions from a second rate textbook for Abstract Algebra 101 pasted together with high-five chit-chat from the mathematics-is-really-neat school of math edutainment. There are only a handful of illustrations in the book, none of which have anything to do with symmetry or patterns of numbers. The book Number Theory in Science and Communication: With Applications in Cryptography, Physics, Digital Information, Computing, and Self-Similarity by M.R.Schroeder is a much better choice for the subject.
