Good Book.......2007-08-15
Its actually a book about Jungian psychology and how to overcome past experiences that haunt your Shadow and inhibit your ability to act.
A MUST HAVE FOR THE 21st CENTURY CHRISTIAN.......2001-03-31
Only the perfect need not order. Dr.Chironna has dared to go beyond the Christian concept that everything we don't want to look at or deal with is solved with a simple 'Let Go and Let God' attitude! He has admitted we Christians have a major problem today. Just like the non-believer, we too, have tons of suppressed mental junk we need to release using practical, commonsense and/or professional (Christian counselors) methods. He has looked under our rugs.
This book is totally based on Scripture, each scripture and its reference location is carefully listed in the back. The book itself is an easy read, it is provable and personal.
Whether you are a brand new Christian or a seasoned mature one you need this book.

Book Description
A Poisoned Past. A Bitter Present.
Is Celia a Murderer . . . or a Victim?
Detective Stan Sheperd lies comatose in the hospital, a victim of arsenic poisoning. The Newpointe police have a suspect: Celia Shepherd, Stan’s wife.
Celia is no stranger to such charges. When her first husband died of poisoning, a technicality scuttled the case against her, and Celia got off scot-free. Now it looks like the same old story--only this time, the motive appears plain. An old flame has moved into town under circumstances bound to raise suspicion. And that’s just for starters. More evidence is gathering that can put Celia away for good.
But attorney Jill Clark thinks the pieces of the puzzle fit together a bit too neatly. Either her client’s Christian faith is a sham, or she’s the victim of a deadly frame up--and the real killer is still afoot. . . .
Shadow of Doubt is book two in the Newpointe 911 suspense series by award-winning novelist Terri Blackstock. Newpointe 911 offers taut, superbly crafted novels of fear, faith, and close-knit, small-town relationships, seasoned with romance and tempered by insights into the nature of relationships, redemption, and the human heart. Look for book one, the best-selling Private Justice, and the upcoming False Witness at your favorite Christian bookstore.

Shadow of Doubt.......2007-05-06
Terri Blackstock is a wonderful Christian author. Her stories are cleanly written, gripping and inspiring. They give Glory and Honor to our Lord. I thank Him for His gift to this author!
Another great Terri Blackstock novel and series.......2006-01-30
Ms. Blackstock's works--her plots, woven with mystery and faith, her interesting characters, et al--are always first rate. "Shadow of a Doubt," "Word of Honor," and "Trial by Fire" are no exceptions. These books, along with "Private Justice" and "Line of Duty," comprise her five-volume 'NEWPOINT 911' series... a series which will entertain and inspire readers. Highly recommended! --RON HOWE (a.k.a. Toby Martin II)
A Good Follow-up.......2005-09-06
Well, Terri Blackstock has done it again. She definitely had alot to live up to due to her amazing series beginner. I was anxious to read this book because the first had the relationship between the two subcharacters, Jill and Dan. I had also seen anlot of Stan Shepard from the first. Ceila's character made me wonder some, but she won me over by her sweet compasion and her quirky aunt. This is definitley a good book and should be read by any suspense~romance avid readers.
A wonderful Story .......2005-05-02
The story begins in Celia and Stan Shepherd's house on Mill Street in a small city named Newpointe. The day had gone along just as every other day except for the fact that during the night Stan had a horrible stomach ache and was terribly dizzy.
The doctor's do lab work on Stan's blood and they see that he has been poisoned by arsenic. Celia is traumatized and becomes very quiet. When questioned it comes to the front that her previous husband was poisoned the same way and he died. However, she had been the one who had been tried and came very close to being convicted. Fortunately the charges were dropped when one of the lawyers went a little too far and started to sound biased.
Throughout this whole story Celia is trying to put her life back together and she is trying to keep her world from falling down. Her friends and even some of her closest family members turn their backs on her. It seems to her as if someone is trying to sabotage her and trying to make her look very much like the killer. The police officers are convinced that she is the murderer and so are many readers. Throughout the whole story different things are happening and it seems as if every minute something new is happening. As different people are introduced into the story it seems as if the suspects change so you never really know who did it.
The ending is extremely surprising and many other readers agree with me.
Predictable.......2003-04-04
After reading the 1st book in the series and knowing "whodunit" throughout most of the book, I thought I would give this series another shot. About 50 pages into the book I knew who the criminal was. I never finished this series. However, I have enjoyed other books by Terri Blackstock.
Book Description
The renowned author of The American Hour, No God But God, and The Dust of Death examines doubt from every angle and from every major perspective. Os Guinness pays special attention to the two basic questions""Why, O Lord?""and""How long, O Lord?""He t
Customer Reviews:
Reassurance for those willing to examine their beliefs.......2007-02-01
Mr. Guinness examines faith and doubt rigorously by tracing their presuppositions, carefully explaining the indissoluble bond between faith and rationality. Faith can and will lead us beyond reason, but never against reason into absurdity. The God who created our capacity for reason is beyond our reason but never at odds with it.
Although the majority of the book probes the nature of doubt from practical origins, one chapter is entirely devoted to doubt springing from emotional and / or psychological scars. This chapter is handled very well, proving Mr. Guinness thinks deeply as well as with breadth of soul and empathy. I think he is a most uncommon and remarkable man.
I was particularly struck with his comparison, using scripture, of the different kinds of doubt we hold. Some of us doubt the POWER of God to affect our lives for the better. This illustration is made in Mark 9: 17 - 25 (the man who brings his demon-possessed son who is often thrown into water and fire to destroy the child). The father of the possessed child has experienced failure at the hands of the apostles. He approaches Jesus with "...if thou canst do anything...." He doubts the POWER of God. He confesses his weak faith: "...and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief."
This kind of doubt is contrasted with the doubt in God's COMPASSION and MERCY as shown in the leper who desires to be cleansed (Matthew 8:2; Mark 1:40; Luke 5:12). The leper says, "Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean." (Matthew 8:2) He doubts the willingness of God to extend healing and mercy - but not God's power to do so. Jesus affirms his willingness verbally: "I will" or "I am willing" and then touches the man (the touch of great compassion and power).
The account of the leper in Matthew is followed very closely by the account of the gentile centurion (Matthew 8:8) who comes to Jesus seeking the healing of a beloved servant of his household. Jesus tells the centurion that he will come and heal the servant, but the centurion (knowing Jesus would be ceremonially defiled by entering into a gentile home) tells Jesus he (the centurion) is not worthy that Jesus should come under his roof, but that a word spoken alone shall be sufficient. Jesus marvels at this great faith and speaks the word of healing. No touch, just the word. The centurion did not need further reassurance because his faith was very strong. He doubted not the power or the mercy and goodness of God.
I am so grateful for these precious insights and so many others which Mr. Guinness gives in this book.
One more insight, which I find very true in my own experience in the battle with unbelief. On page 65, Mr. Guinness explains why many of us (in comfortable circumstances) do not lose our faith. "One reason why many people do not lose their faith is that they are protected by their lifestyles from the uncomfortable logic of the deficiency in their faith. But this is dangerous. The subtlety of the wrap-around influence of alien presuppositions is that they do their work before they are noticed. Whether it is a Christian student surrounded by relativism on a university campus or a Christian family surrounded by the influence of the mass media, too few are awake to the danger. And when they do wake up to the situation, they find that the combat against relativism is not a clean, hand-to-hand fight but a wearing war of nerves against an enemy who is everywhere and nowhere, friendly-seeming but deadly at the same time."
How can anyone resist such beautiful insight and clarity of thought? Does this not describe many of our experiences in the West?
The book has great practical value. After describing and examining the source of each type of doubt, the solution for each is also given with equal logic. That sounds deceptively easy, but Guinness has an ability to illuminate knotty problems so these lose their complexity.
A most valuable book for those who wish to wrestle with their doubt, and love and serve God with gladness and singleness of heart.
Another excellent book by Os Guinness.......2007-01-13
Os's book concisely explains foundational Christian truth and the character of God. It's an excellent tool and support for clearing away misconceptions of belief. His observations about trust are simple and complex. Brilliant.
One of my favorites.......2006-06-28
There nothing else like God In The Dark: The Assurance of Faith Beyond a Shadow of Doubt out there in print that makes such a thorough examination of the phenomenology of doubt.
In part 1 Guinness starts with what he calls the "square one principle": "The person who has the courage to go back when necessary is the one who goes on in the end." Going back and reexamining faith guards against coasting through life on the basis of a faith that, though once vital, has grown inauthentic due to it being taken for granted. When an inevitable crisis comes it fails, leaving one disillusioned and alone in the dark with all kinds of duplicitous thoughts.
From there he "dares" us to doubt by explaining that the idea of faith being "doubt free" only sets us up to drive our faith into the ground like an overloaded donkey. First, it is beaten with a variety of admonitions and cajolings that then lead to warnings and threats of the "big stick" of judgment until it expires and collapses. Then it is beaten for collapsing.
Guinness explains that the doubt is an "in-between" problem that has two minds between faith and unbelief. Unbelief is a deliberate refusal to believe that willfully rejects any affirmation of faith, while doubt is the suspension between the two. The distinction is important, because it makes all the difference in expunging that dreadful perfectionism demanded by "doubtless faith" which ends up being more discouraging than the worst of doubts ever could be.
Part 2 is the lengthy middle section of the book in which Guinness identifies seven different kinds of doubt:
Doubt from ingratitude
Doubt from a faulty view of God
Doubt from weak foundations
Doubt from lack of commitment
Doubt from a lack of growth
Doubt from unruly emotions
Doubt from hidden conflicts
I cannot go into all of these, but I will say that the first two and the last two had the greatest effect on me. Sometimes our doubts are good in that they question our pitiful ideas of God that often are outright misrepresentations of him.
In part 3, Guinness addresses two of the biggest questions that most often shipwreck faith: Why, O Lord; and How Long, O Lord? Suffering and evil are at the center of the first question, and is only answered by trust in the God who knows why--the same one who became incarnate and asked the very same question at the point of his death.
Interestingly enough, Guinness believes the second question is much more difficult for faith than the first. Faith seeks its vision to be substantiated; it does not want to BE, it wants to DO. The prospect of the vision going unfulfilled makes one ask if believing was even worth it, and there is no easy answer except to nourish the vision with the vision of God's character.
The book prescribes remedies for each of these doubts, though none is exhaustive. However, I was struck by the non-simplistic answers to these issues and how one must be diligent in engaging the heart and mind to really grasp for the assurance of faith in an honest way.
Deal With Doubt by Understanding It.......2000-10-25
Got in the Dark is not a fast read because it is so profound. You will enjoy yourself going "wow" and having to stop and think. You will find yourself wanting to read passages to loved ones. Every page is very well thought out and the whole book is very well organized and thorough. The book deals with the doubts that thinking Christians have and stresses that it is healthy and faith building to deal with your doubts and not be ashamed of them. It is refreshing to read an intellectual Christian author that doesn't read like a testbook. I got my "money's worth" with this one.
Book Description
Detroit attorney and former alcoholic Charley Sloan lost his practice, his wife, and his fortune to booze. A chance at a comeback arrives in his former lover, Robin Harwell. She’s now the desperate widow of a multimillionaire—and stepmother of the teenage girl charged with his brutal murder.
Damned by forensic evidence, witness testimony, a history of mental problems, and by her own confession, young Angel’s defense will be hard coming—and believing in her innocence could come at a price far more personal than he ever feared.
As the media descends, Charley finds himself shadowed by rivals determined to destroy him, trapped in the seductive grip of a never-forgotten love affair, and plunged in a dark morass of terrible lies, bitter secrets, and unforgiving family ties…

Two mysteries--whether Angel killed her father or Charlie Sloan will finish the case.........2006-06-06
Charlie Sloan has been around the bend and is slowly coming back. He's made millions of dollars, wed three beautiful women, had a prosperous career, and lost them all to the bottle.
When an old lover comes to him asking him to help with her step-daughter's defense in a case of murdering her father, Charlie sends her elsewhere, but she refuses to go. As he digs, he believes Angel hasn't committed the crime and is determined to get her off--because an NGRI plea isn't an option anymore and he's not willing to send a girl with a mental illness to prison.
The novel's fast-paced and interesting. The end was surprising if you weren't paying real close attention. A good read by an author I want to hear more from!
Not typical of the genre..........2005-12-22
William Coughlin's novel 'Shadow of a Doubt' is different from other boooks in this mystery genre. While many of these books stray to the action thriller hunt them down chases...this one looks at the mystery and slowly works its way through the plot with a great story and interesting characters.
The story centers on a lawyer, Charley Sloan, that is riding the fine line between failure and barely making it. He is thrice divorced and a recovering alcholic. He was once a big shot with big money, big clients and a big reputation...all of that has gone down the gutter and he is trying to just get by--that all changes when a former childhood lover visits him and asks him to defend his stepdaughter.
I like the story because it deals with a guy that you see is struggling with his talents and his addiction to alcohol. You see the difficulty that he would have in trying to defend this high profile case. You get to know the women characters in this (Robin Harwell--former lover and wife of the dead man, and her stepdaughter Angel who is accused of murdering her dad) and become as frustrated as Sloan is when they give him little help in defending Angel.
It is a good mystery with good characters and it is well written. There are some twists and there are some turns and there is some humor. Well done effort by Coughlin.
The best ever.......2004-12-24
I picked this book up in the early 90's when it was first published. I thought it remarkable then and now, re-reading it, even more so. It is scary to try a case, especially when the cards are stacked against you.
Charley Sloan beefed up his courage with alcohol, and the house of cards eventually came tumbling down.
Now he has a chance for redemption . . . . and those that hate him a chance for retribution.
This really captures the marriage of alcohol and litigation, regrettably often not that far apart. Coughlin has a strangle hold on the the self doubt of any lawyer who struts and frets his hour upon the stage and his descriptive powers of that fear are without parallel.
Nice view of the dark humor of the meetings, too. 5 stars. Could be 8. Highly recommended. Larry Scantlebury
The Legendary Charles Sloan!.......2000-02-12
I loved the Sloan character and wished that Coughlin wrote a series.
Coughlin did a great job with Sloan.
Can we say... cliche?.......1999-06-16
If you have nothing better to do than listen to uninspired mind of a main character that leaves you feeling uninspired in the end, go ahead and pick up the book. If rediculous endings do not at all cause uneasiness, go ahead and read it. It wasn't a terrible book by any means, but there's nothing other than an absurd ending that's memorable.

Book Description
This is the second book in the FOUR-MINUTE FORENSIC MYSTERIES series. CSI Wes Burton is back with his cast of quirky but loveable characters, including pathologist Dr. Crown, CSI technician Mike Trellis, Detectives Radley and Gibson, and Ed, the search-and-rescue border collie. Crime scenes include a man who may have spontaneously combusted, a claim of mistaken dog identity, and a room full of scorpions that may or may not be deadly. Burton and his crew use science to prove that drinking too much water can be deadly, that the DNA of an onion can prove murder, and that the smell of a greenhouse can sometimes be mistaken for a decomposing corpse. The Crime Files cast of characters relish their work solving crimes by using modern forensic techniques, though they rely on good old-fashioned humor to get them through each scene.

No doubt = very good!.......2002-11-25
This was a first read for me. Heroine was likeable. Mystery was interesting. Solution was not easy.
Kali goes home to clear up her father's estate without help from her siblings. Her 'boyfriend'was a jerk and you welcomed a new interest for her. Loretta was adorable. An old and dear friend inadvertently nets her into involvement with a murder and its solution.
This book was pleasant, a quick read. I might try another.
A great mystery!.......2000-06-08
What a great mystery! I like this book very much! Until the end, I couldn't find who the murderer was. It's the second book from Jonnie Jacobs I read, both are great. I will read all the others. (Please excuse my english, I'm French!)

Book Description
FOR FIFTEEN-YEAR-OLD Shadow Thompson, life ended seven years earlier-the night his older brother Daniel ran away from home, taking not only Shadow's piggy bank but also his trust. That's when Shadow stopped depending on other people and turned inward, relying only on himself. But now Daniel is back and he stands accused of murder. Shadow's anger at his brother, his parents' struggles to cope with the sudden return of their son, and Daniel's own feelings of guilt create an emotional undertow that threatens to consume the family once again. But as Shadow begins to open up to new friends, he slowly learns to trust and finally, to forgive. Now the Thompsons may get a second chance at being a family. Award-winning author S.L. Rottman once again crafts a powerful story that depicts the complexity of human relationships within the framework of a troubled adolescent's struggles to make sense of the people and the world around him.

Courtesy of Teens Read Too.......2006-10-26
In SHADOW OF A DOUBT, author S. L. Rottman tackles several issues superbly, weaving the plot and subplots into a multi-layered novel teens will love. While the main issue is family reconciliation, other subjects include alienation, friendship, and the stigma of having a relative in the criminal justice system.
The main character, Shadow, has had to deal with the absence of his older brother for nearly half his life. But when Daniel returns, the entire family's life is turned upside down. Their mom and dad have many questions but tread softly, not wanting to alienate their returned prodigal son. Shadow resents the warm welcome and the "molly-coddling" Daniels receives from them, particularly in light of the murder charge hanging over his head.
As the parents try to allow Daniel to come and go as he pleases as he waits for his trial, Shadow feels overprotected and resents his lack of freedom. He has joined the Debate Team at school and gradually finds a sense of belonging. But the questions linger about Daniel's guilt or innocence and tension builds in the home as the trial draws near. In the end, Shadow must confront his parents, his brother, and his own suspicions and fears in order to grow as an individual. This proves to be extremely challenging, making SHADOW OF A DOUBT an engaging read.
The characters are well-rounded, the dialogue quite realistic, and the raw emotions of a family in turmoil ring true. Rottman has accurately portrayed a family's pain as they cope with loss and recovery, two roads exceedingly difficult for parents and their children.
Recommended. Five stars.

Shadow of a Doubt.......2005-10-27
This books is about a boy Shadow, whose brother and best friend runs away when he was just a child. Now that he has been alone for quite sometime, it is a major shock when his brother Dan comes back home. His parents not only had to pick him up from jail but they have to take him to court for being accused of murder. Shadow is just a teenage boy and he is trying the best he can to make things in his life and his parent's lives good. Throughout the book Shadow learns of Dan's past and learns to feel for others. This is a great book! Read it!
Good Book For Teens.......2005-10-14
I picked up this book after my sixteen year old nephew, who is a Goth, told me that he took a lot of tips from this YA novel, tips on how to dress, and what makeup to wear, and what attitudes to put on, to hide his own shyness and to make sense of a confusing adult world. The book relates the story of a young boy, Shadow, who has to deal with the trauma of losing a beloved older brother. It reminds me very much of the famous S E Hinton book, Rumble Fish, and to a lesser degree, THE OUTSIDERS, for all three books are about what happens when your adored older brother turns out to have feet of clay? in SHADOW OF A DOUBT (cute name), Shadow Thompson was just a tad when bro Daniel ran away from home, leaving his mom and dad desolate and depending on him for amusement, but being too grief-stricken really to attend to his needs, so he retreated into the wonderland of Goth, or maybe not retreated, perhaps "discovered his subject position" would be a better way to put it. He wears dark glasses, even indoors, so nobody can see his eyes and guess what his feelings are.
Daniel comes back at the beginning of the book-wanted for murder! I thought this was a little bit of overkill. Couldn't he have just come back period? Nothing else in the book would have changed. I notice that with the novels of Rottman. She always tosses in more than the book can really handle, or more than they need. There was the one book I remember about the girl who was in high school with her boyfriend who's more of a horndog than she can handle, and between that and her swimming career the book would have been quite full already, and then she had to have yet another plot about uncaring parents who saddle the poor girl with an older brother who has Downs syndrome (and still wants to swim). Too much!
But in SHADOW OF A DOUBT, young Shadow has to now cope with the law and wanting to protect his brother, rather like the Hinton novels. My own nephew adores the book and even said that he would consider joining the debating team, after reading this book. Well, he calls it the "forensics team" and it turns out he thought "forensics" is what it is on his favorite TV shows BONES and CSI, for his dearest wish is to grow up and have a job relating to dead bodies and murder, I think he'll be in for a surprise when he joins the debate team and there's no rotting flesh involved.
I would give Rottman's novel an A Plus for trying, but in the end it's not very involving. However I am over fifteen and perhaps young readers (its target audience) would ignore its lack of plausibility and instead groove on Shadow's fashion sense and growing love interest. Perhaps it will also restore teenager's interests in debating teams.
A great teenage read!.......2004-05-17
Being a middle school librarian I'm always searching for good books kids can relate to and enjoy reading, this is one. The personna of Shadow is what our gothic-type students portray, and yet, many times is a facade. The older brother returning after missing for 7 years shows the tender thread that holds all families together. His murder charge and the facts surrounding it, give a good idea as to how difficult it is to make it in the world alone and how quickly what you love can be taken from you. And, finally, Shadow realizing that he is capable of change - in clothes, in attitude, and in friendship - shows our students that change is always an option.

Though Shadow of a Doubt, by S. L. Rottman, will appeal to both male and female young adult readers on several levels, adults will also profit from reading this excellently written story about a 15 year old boy whose brother returns to the family after being gone for 8 years. The book deals with family dynamics and issues of trust. The main character dresses in black and we see the pre-judgment people have made expecting him to be like his brother who had made a reputation for himself in high school before his disappearance. There will be families who will be able to identify with the grief and sacrifices that go along with someone in the family facing incarceration. We can see the tension between the main character and his parents and understand what is going on, why the mother is so over-protective. We see the value of friendship and the hope of parents changing. We see the power of respect(...) there is the hope of a shadow of a doubt when the older brother goes to trial. There is also a little love interest. I read the book in one sitting (unusual for me). This book is on my highly recommend list.
