Book Description

Four wealthy women kidnapped.

Three ransoms demanded and paid.

Two bodies returned, mutilated and drained of blood.

One man determined to avenge the wrongs of his past.

Nikki James is in San Francisco at the request of her partner and best friend, Jake. The wife of Jake's old friend is missing, and Jake intends to find her—whatever the cost. While the authorities believe the kidnappings are the work of a sick mind, Nikki knows it is something much worse. Vampires. Six of them. And they know who she is, and why she's there.

Michael Kelly has just returned from a vampire hunting expedition in his homeland and wants to spend some much-needed relaxation time with Nikki. But when he discovers she's gone to San Francisco to pursue the vampire gang currently terrorizing the city, he has no choice except to follow. Not only to keep her safe from the gang, but because he fears the psychic talents she's beginning to develop. Abilities she should not have and cannot control.

The chase takes them through the sewers and tunnels of San Francisco. As the body count begins to rise, so, too, does the danger. Michael isn't the only one aware of Nikki's new abilities, and she becomes a target. But Nikki has no intention of obeying Michael's demands that she leave. She's tired of playing it safe and wants him to realize it's all or nothing. She's either a full partner in his life, or she's out.

But nothing prepares her for the price she has to pay for her stubbornness—the life of someone she loves.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous.......2007-02-22

Book 3 of the Nikki and Michael series. This time the case Nikki deals with hits closer to home. Nikki also tells Michael that she wants to be with him, but he has to accept her as a full time partner in their cases. Great read, really keeps you hanging. There is a little bit of romance in this series, but it isn't too heavy. Book still falls under sci-fi/fanstasy.

5 out of 5 stars A Pleasant Surprise.......2005-01-01

This was my first Keri Arthur book, so I wasn't sure what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised. The plot was fast paced, well-crafted and believable. The romance (which was also well done and well developed) wasn't the main thrust of the book, the story was. The only problem I had with this particular book is that I didn't get a complete mental image of the three main characters, Jake, Nikki and Michael. I suspect that the problem was that I hadn't read the other books in the series published before this one. But, since I loved this one so much, I intend to not only read those books, but the rest of Ms. Arthur's books. A great read!

This was a real good book. Can't wait for the Fourth Book Kiss the Night Goodbye. Keep up the good work.

5 out of 5 stars powerful supernatural romance.......2003-02-04

Michael is a three hundred and sixty year old vampire who works for The Circle, an organization of paranormal beings dedicated to destroying their evil kin. Nikki is a thrall, a being similar to a vampire without the need for blood. She and Michael are a couple in trouble because he wants to protect her and she wants to work with him for The Circle.

When Michael arrives home after an assignment, he finds that Nikki is not there, she has gone to help her partner in their private detective agency track down a killer who is abducting, torturing and killing women. When Michael arrives, they learn that the killer is a vampire out to settle some old scores from his high school days. Only through teamwork can this killer be stopped, but even working together that remains a dangerous proposition since he has targeted Nikki as one of his victims.

Keri Arthur is one of the best supernatural romance writers of the new millennium. Her books are always refreshingly different and she has a knack for creating characters it is easy to care about. CHASING THE SHADOW IS ONE OF HER BEST works to date because equal attention is given to the relationship and the hunt. Vampire lovers are going to love this book and want to read the next book in the series because there are questions that need answers.

While Michael is in Ireland hunting vampires, Nikki, at loose ends, is contacted by Jake to assist him in a case. Three wealthy women have been kidnapped and held for ransom. After the ransom was paid, two of the women were found dead, mutilated and drained of blood. The third is the wife of Jake's best friend. They have to find her before she meets the same fate. Annoyed at Michael's overprotective ways, Nikki jumps at the chance to work on a case again. Unfortunately, Michael has been assigned to the same case by the Circle and doesn't want her in any danger. And, there's the little problem of the new powers that Nikki seems to be developing faster than she can control them.

I am hooked on this series. The characters are strong, the villians wild, and the story line intense. Once I picked this one up, I couldn't put it down. This is an outstanding addition to the series.

Book Description

Poring over a map one day, Ewan McGregor—film star and bike nut—noticed it was possible to ride all the way around the world, with just one short hop across the Bering Strait. So he called Charley Boorman, his best friend, fellow actor, and bike nut. From London to New York, Ewan and Charley rode their BMWs through Europe, the Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Mongolia and Russia, across the Pacific to Alaska, then down through Canada and America. Exhaustion, injury, and accidents tested their strength, as did treacherous roads and weather. They were pursued by paparazzi in Kazakhstan, courted by men with guns in the Ukraine, and served bulls' testicles for supper by Mongolian nomads. Yet despite the many obstacles, they managed to ride over 20,000 miles in four months. As they traveled, they documented their trip, taking photos and writing diaries.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome !.......2006-12-15

What an awesome book, recording an awesome experience. As a biker myself, I was attracted to the book just to read about a trip that is beyond my means and abilities, but the book ended up meaning much more than that to me. It showed me, yet again, that wherever you go in the world (And I've travelled a fair bit of it myself in my work as a seafarer !) people everywhere are just people like you and I, when you get past the religious, political and economic differences that can so often divide us. It also highlights the fact that people who make a living in the film industry are not necessarily unapproachable, self centred and addicted to adulation. They can be warm, human and prone to the same joys, fears and desires as the rest of us. In short, they are human beings who just happen to have a good job. This is not just a good read about a motor bike trip of a lifetime, it is a book that rekindles hope that the world, and its varied people, is a beautiful place after all, and not half as dangerous as some would have us believe. Whether you're a biker, an armchair traveller or just someone looking for an exciting and inspiring read, then this book is for you. I can't praise it highly enough.

5 out of 5 stars A vicarious adventure.......2006-11-11

Long Way Round chronicles the around-the-world motorcycle adventure of Charley Boorman and Ewan McGregor. It's unlikely I'll ever do anything like that in my life, but the book gave me an idea of what it's like. Both of them are entertaining writers and it was a really inspiring book. A great tale of taking an adventure and making it a dream come true; of friendship; and of overcoming obstacles. A great companion to the dvd set.

2 out of 5 stars Save your money.......2006-05-26

I couldn't wait to get this book. It sounded like a great story of adventure across several continents. After the first chapter I deeply regreted my purchase. What had great potential turned out to be two guys boasting about their popularity and how it was going to be difficult being celebrities. Maybe it's just me, but I wouldn't know them at all, despite their numerous references to the movies they've been in. I thought I was getting a book about the challenges of travel abroad and pictures of these places. What I got was a book with too many pictures of the authors, weak stories of the places they stayed in and the food they ate.

1 out of 5 stars A joke: Rich boys followed around the world by BCC.......2006-05-20

This adventure pales beside the great round the world books on motorcyle like One Man Caravan by Robert Edison Fulton or Jupiter's Travels by Ted Simon. There is little sense of real adventure with this banal travel chronology. A major support team follows closely on the tails of these guys who over packed, offer little insight to local cultures, and the worse challenge they face is eating food that they don't normally eat. Surely, the BCC could afford to have the book ghost written for them to improve the interest.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful story, beautiful photos.......2006-04-13

This is the illustrated version of the amazing story of two friends traveling around the world together. It is a demonstration of the will of individuals to make it to their goal. More importantly it is also an illustration of the generosity, the kindness, the sadness, the humor and the beauty they found along the way. You don't have to be interested in motorcycles, you don't even have to care who Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman are! Its just a great tale of two people and an adventure.

As wonderful as it is to read the story, you must also get the dvd. It is as close as most of us will ever get to these amazing locations, and you couldn't ask for better guides!

Good account of the trip. Photos and diagrams are very important features, it could however have more of both.

1 out of 5 stars Long Way Round: Chasing our egos..........2007-10-03

As a guy who wakes up everyday, goes to work, comes home with more work and less time for his own children, I was really looking forward to some genuine escape, some interesting descriptions, epiphanies, maybe even insights into life on a bike traveling around the world. What I got was a couple of "priveleged blokes" to borrow a previous reviewers description, who really do nothing but whine about missing their families, complain about being uneasy in a crowd, and who really say nothing about the geography or culture they encounter.
I would give my eye-teeth for a new 1200GS Adventure, with a "full-kit," I settled on a book about it and doubt I'll even finish it - these guys bore me to death...

4 out of 5 stars Very good companion piece..........2007-09-04

I loved the show when I saw it on Bravo, but thought, "More than this has to have happened on a 4 month trip!"

And so it did.

I'm particularly fond of the first person voice from BOTH men. Ewan seemed on the show to be just a little to consciously charming, while Charlie seemed to be something of a cry-baby--which I'm sure was a bit of a conscious choice on the part of the editors of the show.

The book gives a much fuller picture of the situations they encountered, and proves a much more rounded picture of both these fellows. And because I read the book before I watched the DVD's of the show again, it even made the shows more enjoyable.

All in all, I hope they do another book for their ride 'Down!'

4 out of 5 stars Decent.......2007-06-19

This book was pretty good. I enjoyed it because it was about a motorcycle trip around the world. However, beause Ewan and Charlie are so privileged it was dificult to care about some of their problems. For, instance it was hard to sympathize for them when they were having difficulties getting someone to pay for the trip for them. Then after they get a movie deal to pay for the trip, they complain about how the movie production cramps their style. It really seems like they wanted their cake and wanted to eat it too. They could have just maned up and paid for it themselves, then they wouldn't have any problems of the support crew cramping their style. Similarly, when they had to cross a border, they had someone else take care of all the problems for them and were able to sit back and rest.

I did enjoy reading about some of the remote parts of the world and how they had to overcome some of the obstacles on their own. I think this book is worth reading, but I would reccomend getting it from the library.

5 out of 5 stars Great Story.......2007-02-12

An excellent tale about a long motorcycle trip. Must read for bikers and those who wish they were. If you ever wanted to take a long trip off the beaten path, this book will either push in the right direction, or keep you on the sofa.

Book Description

Chasing Hubble’s Shadows is an account of the continuing efforts of astronomers to probe the outermost limits of the observable universe. The book derives its title from something the great American astronomer Edwin Hubble once wrote: “Eventually, we reach the dim boundary—the utmost limits of our telescopes. There, we measure shadows, and we search among ghostly errors of measurement for landmarks that are scarcely more substantial.”
The quest for Hubble’s “shadows”—those unimaginably distant, wispy traces of stars and galaxies that formed within the first few hundred million years after the Big Bang—takes us back, in effect, to the beginning of time as we are able to perceive it, when the first discrete stellar objects appeared out of what has lately come to be known as the “cosmic dark age.” The information that is being gleaned from these dim sources—chiefly with the aid of Hubble’s namesake, the Hubble Space Telescope—promises to yield clues to many cosmic puzzles, including the nature of the mysterious “dark energy” that is now believed to pervade all of space.

4 out of 5 stars A stimulating reminder of how amazing the universe is.......2007-02-25

This book is very readable, and makes no mathematical demands, but does tend to assume readers have a rough idea of some concepts used in cosmology, such as red shift, arcsecond, etc. But even if you don't, the dramatic impact is not lost as you are confronted by the amazing insights that astronomers have been able to gain about the universe, in particular as a result of the data collected by the Hubble telescope.

If your humility needs a refresher course, this is a good book to read! One human being is a mighty small part of the whole shebang.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but not for everyone.......2006-12-27

I am going to have to dissent with some of the previous reviews. I think there is a definite audience for this book, but I cannot wholeheartedly recommend it to just anyone interested in popular books on astronomy. The book is best suited for someone who is already familiar with the basic concepts of galactic astronomy and cosmology, and who is interested in hearing about what type of research is currently on-going in these areas.

The book is not technical, so it is easy to assume, (mistakenly), that the book is suitable for anyone interested in the subject. The problem is that even though the writing is non-technical, Kanipe explains very few concepts. For example, Kanipe talks a lot about redshift and reionization in a non-technical way, but he never really provides a clear introductory explanation of them. You don't need a degree in astronomy to read this book, but you should be familiar with the basic concepts if you want to get the most from it.

Interestingly Kanipe does explain a few basic concepts, but this is sporadic at best. I had to wonder who Kanipe's intended audience was. For example, within the first few pages Kanipe talks about astronomers looking for galaxies with redshifts in the range of 3 to 5 without ever explaining what it means for a galaxy to have such a redshift. Okay, no problem with that. Perhaps Kanipe is writing for an audience he expects would know what a redshift of 5 means, yet only a few pages later Kanipe seems to assume his audience will not know what a spectrum is as he explains how the purpose of a certain telescope is to "separate the light of a very faint galaxy into its component colors, or wavelengths, the result being a narrow band of bright and dark lines called a spectrum." Huh? What audience does not need an explanation high redshift galaxies, but does need an explanation of a spectrum? I expect that Kanipe was trying to make the book accessible to as wide an audience as possible, but unfortunately he only provided a few gratuitous explanations of basic concepts. My concern is that if you scan through the book and see something like the above quote, it is easy to mistakenly assume the book is accessible to anyone, when in truth the basic concepts explained are too random and too few to effectively make the book accessible and enjoyable to those not already reasonably familiar with the subject.

Another aspect of Kanipe's writing to be aware of is his choice of words. It reminded me of reading "Lord of the Flies". Here are a few examples of what I mean:

"the protean objects stippling deep surveys"
"dark matter, the chimeric material"
"when expansion was clearly more allegro"
"the very skin of this alluvial structure"
"the microwave photons broke free from an effluvium of electrons and protons"
"perhaps dark energy and dark matter are hermaphroditic in nature"
"a feathery swirl of diaphanous light wrapped like a watch spring around a bright central sprocket"
"the beautiful cochlear appearance of many normal spiral galaxies"
"perhaps halos are a kind of palimpsest of galactic evolutionary history"
"some of the pithy remnants of these tidally stripped dwarf galaxies"
"it's worth providing some record, however mercurial, of the impressive gains"
"in the study of this empyrean armature we call the universe"

Some people will enjoy Kanipe's choice of descriptive words, but for me he went overboard. Just be aware of this style because I don't think it is for everyone.

As I said, I believe this book will appeal most to those who are already reasonably familiar with the subject, and who are interested in hearing about on-going research. I certainly did walk away with a feeling of having glimpsed into the lives and work of galactic observational astronomers. In this Kanipe succeeds quite well. He passionately describes numerous observational projects and provides extensive quotes from the astronomers doing the research. He also indirectly, though not so subtly, argues for the continued funding of the Hubble Space Telescope and other projects. Certainly I would have no argument with him there.

In the end I gave the book three stars. This was not my kind of book, but I believe it has an audience. It is not a technically difficult book by any means, and it does give a pretty nice review of ongoing research, but to really enjoy the book, it will be helpful if you are reasonably familiar with basic concepts in galactic astronomy and cosmology. For such a person, and especially someone who enjoys descriptive, almost poetic language, this could be a very enjoyable read. Kanipe obviously put a lot into the book, and he does give a feel for the work astronomers are doing. It has its place, but in the end it didn't make my list of favorites.

5 out of 5 stars Great scientific reporting.......2006-11-05

I found this book to be a very good report on the current state of the fields of astronomy and cosmology, particularly as to how they are concerned with investigations into the early development of the universe. It is very well balanced for a wide potential audience, neither too technical (with the danger of tuning out those with inadequate scientific knowledge), nor written so simply as to fail to add to our education as we read. I also thought the length of the book was about right, so that I never felt that the book dragged at any point. Highly recommended to anyone interested in the "universe around us", quite literally.

5 out of 5 stars Exciting tour of the frontiers of cosmology........2006-04-23

I enjoyed this book because it moves beyond the usual arm-waving of many cosmology books. Kanipe is a journalist, not a scientist, and it helps the book immensely. He explains concepts such as redshift and reionization in clear and understandable terms, and seasons his prose with amusing observations (one cosmologist is described as Keith Richards with a killer Powerpoint presentation).

Chasing Hubble's Shadows is also mainly about the frontiers of cosmology - discoveries that are being made now, not rehashes of old science as so many astronomy books can be. I felt as if I were traveling along with the researchers as they pushed the boundaries of knowledge ever-farther.

Highly recommended for anyone who wonders how the universe came to be - and isn't that everyone?

4 out of 5 stars The latest in deep space astronomy.......2006-04-22

When we look out into space we look back in time. When we have the Hubble Space Telescope working for us we look very deep into space and very far back in time, so far back that some of the galaxies that Hubble can see are as they were billions of years ago when the universe was young, when there were few heavy metals, long before the sun came to life, long before (presumably) the birth of our galaxy.

What was the universe like then and what can we learn about the properties of the universe and about its evolution from the dim light given off by those very distant galaxies?

What science journalist Jeff Kanipe is trying to do in this book is bring the general reader up to date on the latest discoveries and understandings in astronomy and how these discoveries are leading to a better understanding of cosmology. Do galaxies look different as we go back in time? Clearly the very first galaxies consisted of stars containing only hydrogen and helium. How were these stars different from the stars we see around us, from our own sun? And what about the shape and characteristics of the first galaxies? Were they spirals, barred or normal, ellipticals or irregulars? And what role does dark energy and dark matter play in their formation?

Kanipe gives up-to-date answers to these questions, and this is one of the strengths of this readable book. Events in astronomy and cosmology move quickly. Books that are even a few years old will be out of date in certain respects. I am always interested in what is, for example, the latest estimate of the age of the universe. Kanipe gives a age of about 14 billion years, which means that light from the most primordial event comes to us from a distance of about 14 billion light years. Actually it is a little less than this since there was a so called "dark age" that lasted until about 13.66 billion years ago at a red shift of (gulp!) 1000. Kanipe typically uses red shift measurements instead of light years to express both distance and time. For example an object 7.3 light years away has a red shift of 0.9. If we look back a mere 70 million years the red shift is a tiny 0.005.

One of the most interesting parts of the book is on Kanipe's visit to Mauna Kea, Hawaii where the two great Keck telescopes are housed. He makes vivid the experience of being with the astronomers at their camp at 9,000 feet and atop the mountain in the cold, still air at nearly 14,000 feet. Kanipe's story integrates knowledge from telescopes around the world, including that from infrared, radio and other telescopes.

One of the things I like best about the book is that there isn't a lot of repetitive history. Instead, the book is devoted to what is happening now in astronomy. The only difficulty is that there is a lot of information to absorb and some of the ideas are unusual. The terminology also requires some effort to get used to, but Kanipe eschews most jargon and uses almost no mathematics.

There are some nice color prints in the middle of the book, an index and a bibliography.

    Book Description

In the seventh century AD, the Chinese monk Xuanzang set off on an epic journey to India to study Buddhist philosophy from the Indian masters. Traveling along the Silk Road, braving brigands and blizzards, Xuanzang finally reached India, where his spiritual quest took him to Buddhist holy places and monasteries throughout the subcontinent. Fourteen hundred years later, Mishi Saran follows in Xuanzang's footsteps to the fabled oasis cities of China and Central Asia, and the Buddhist sites and now-vanished kingdoms in India, Pakistan and Afghanistan that Xuanzang wrote about. Traveling seamlessly back and forth in time between the seventh century and the twenty-first, Saran uncovers the past with consummate skill even as she brings alive the present through her vivid and engaging descriptions of people and places.

A riveting mix of lively reportage, high adventure, historical inquiry and personal memoir, this delightfully written book is a path-breaking travelogue.

5 out of 5 stars An enlightening read for anyone affected by adoption.......2006-08-08

This personal testimony is definitely worth a read for anyone whose life has been touched by adoption in any way. In simple language and with an engaging writing style, the author, Zara, tells her own story, with frankness and simplicity. In doing so, she educates us about the some of the complex feelings of adoption - feelings that, for many people and for many years, have never been acknowledged.

I `happened' across this book - 6 years into my own reunion with the daughter I lost to adoption in 1968 - and have been very moved by the open and honest way Zara talks of her own experiences and feelings about being adopted, many of which echo things I know for myself or have heard from others. Unlike many of the books out there that deal with adoption, she makes no judgements on what others should do or feel - this is simply her own story - a very personal account of how adoption has affected her life.

Though Zara has chosen to write about her journey to motherhood, I think there is much to be learned from her story outside of that. The book has helped me to understand my daughter better and from the comments I've had back from her and others affected by adoption to whom I've given copies of the book, it seems to bring new level of validations and enlightenment about the whole adoption experience.

    5 out of 5 stars A page-turning inner adventure.......2005-01-12

A vivid and entertaining story of one determined young woman's quest to find her unique place in the world. Adopted as an infant by well-to-do parents in a London suburb, Zara Phillips felt wracked with a sense of displacement she couldn't explain -- an inner turmoil at odds with her developing persona as a cool rock singer. In secret, she decided that she must discover her truth of her identity. The cost, as turned out, would be great. Phillips takes the reader along for the whole rich ride, through rage and drugs and tours and men to the hard-earned happiness of motherhood and marriage in a home unquestionably her own. Even readers who weren't adopted will understand Phillips's driving need to uncover the truth. In direct, spare language, she unerringly locates the universal pulse beneath her personal spiritual journey. "Chasing Away the Shadows" delivers information, including a solid resource guide for adoptees and parents. But Phillips writes like a novelist. Her suspenseful search for her birth parents keeps the pages turning. And amid the drama, she lets the laughter through. One highlight: Phillips's son telling workmen that his mum is like Superman. Why? "Because she's adopted!" he says. "Chasing Away the Shadows" is a super book. Whether you're adopted or just plain human, don't miss it.

    5 out of 5 stars A wonderful book.......2005-01-11

A must read for any aodoptee who is a parent or is considering parenting. Enough said!

5 out of 5 stars The story of an adult adoptee's heart - A must read!.......2005-01-05

Whether adoption is part of your life or not, you truly will not want to miss out on this newest adoption book, "Chasing Away the Shadows - An Adoptee's Journey to Motherhood," by Zara Phillips.

Zara and I had corresponded for a couple of months before I had the privilege of meeting her at November's CUB retreat in Monterey, CA. In this writer's opinion, Zara is articulate, smart, and very well spoken, possessing all the qualities needed to be a successfull writer/speaker.

Having had the opportunity to be the first test-reader for Zara's manuscript, I knew then, when I simply could not put it down it was going to be a great book - a must read, in fact. It is an honest and compelling account of the struggles one encounters in living the life of an adoptee.

Zara was born (1964) and raised in England. I so enjoyed reading and "hearing" her lovely English accent gently carressing the words upon the pages of her story, as only a "Proper English" lady can do. Zara's willingness to share the story of her troubled past so honestly and openly is a tribute to her fine, upstanding character. This outstanding book is most certainly worth the read.

5 out of 5 stars One of the BEST!.......2004-12-31

This was by far one of the best adoption related books I've read. Zara Phillips did a wonderful job sharing her personal story & feelings about being an adoptee. I could see myself in so many aspects of her life from the beginning of life to becoming a mother. This book should be read by ALL members of the triad. It was worth more than 5 stars in my eyes. GREAT BOOK, easy read.

        Book Description

Marcelo Bonevardi (1929-1994) was one of the most innovative artists of his generation. A native of Argentina, Bonevardi spent the greater part of his career in New York City, where he absorbed avant-garde practices and influences such as abstraction and primitivism, using them to invent a pictorial and symbolic language with which to express his deep spirituality and affinity for myth and ritual. Bonevardi is best known for his shaped canvases, which combine elements of painting and sculpture, reflecting his early training and lifelong interest in architecture. During his lifetime, Bonevardi received many honors, including the International Prize at the X Bienal de Saõ Paulo, first prize in the "Ten Argentine Artists at the United Nations" permanent installation, and the Platinum Prize from the Konex Foundation. Bonevardi's work has been collected by many leading North American and Latin American museums, including the Museum of Modern Art and the Guggenheim Museum in New York City; the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes and the Museo de Arte Moderno in Buenos Aires; the Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Universidade in Saõ Paulo; and the Museo Rufino Tamayo in Mexico City.

This lavishly illustrated volume presents the first comprehensive overview of the life and work of Marcelo Bonevardi. Noted art historian Dore Ashton provides a biographical and critical essay that traces Bonevardi's artistic development and situates him in the New York art scene of the 1960s and 1970s. Ashton illuminates the diverse influences that helped shape Bonevardi's art, as well as his contribution to important trends in North American and Latin American abstraction. Ronald Christ's in-depth essay draws on extensive interviews with the artist and reviews of his work to offer a focused analysis of the unique themes and techniques that constitute Bonevardi's signature style. Accompanying the essays and chronologies of the artist's life and exhibitions is a catalogue of over three hundred images, most in full color, that comprise a stunning visual summation of Marcelo Bonevardi's oeuvre.
