Book Description
It's winter, and Wolf, Torak's beloved pack-brother, has been captured by an unknown foe. In a desperate bid to rescue him, Torak and Renn must brave the frozen wilderness of the Far North.
As they battle for survival amid howling blizzards and the ever-present menace of the great white bear, their friendship is tested to the breaking point, and Torak is forced to get closer to his enemies than ever before. . . .
Soul Eater is a haunting story of loyalty and loss, a chilling portrayal of the nature of evil, and the next step in the perilous journey that began with Wolf Brother and Spirit Walker.

Chronicles of Ancient Darkness.......2007-07-09
I purchased this book for my son who is 13 years old and has never been interested in reading books. I homeschool my son and I purchased the first book in this series "Wolf Brother" for him to read for school. What a GREAT FIND! He loved the book and asked for the next two in the series. My daughter and I have read the series also. We can't wait for book #4 to come out. This series has very high energy, lots of action and it is an interesting read.
In the great forests of ancient times, Torak and his friend, Renn, once again hunt........2007-06-05
In the great forests of ancient times, Torak and his friend, Renn, once again hunt. With them is the giant wolf dog who is never far from Torak's side. Everything seems normal to them until Torak comes across the feather of the fierce eagle owl, which is a bad omen. Though Torak throws it away, the hunt is spoiled when a giant eagle owl swoops from the tree tops and scares their prey away. Then, unexpectedly, Wolf darts away as if in pursuit of new prey. Though they try to follow, he easily out-distances them.
After some debate they decide to continue their hunt for Wolf and not go back to their Raven tribe. Little do they know what this decision will mean as they struggle deeper and deeper into uncharted, frozen lands. This is the beginning of the end for Torak and Renn.
In the meantime, Wolf has fallen into a trap set by the dreaded Soul Eaters; he has been beaten, drugged and caged. The Soul Eaters are in the process of gathering the fiercest animal hunters to sacrifice. It is the strength of these hunters that will help make the Soul Eaters the strongest tribe. They are power hungry, evil and reek of rotting flesh as they move forward with their evil plan.
Without the help of the White Fox Clan, Torak and Renn might have perished. When attacked by the winter bear, it is Fox Clan member Inuktiluk who helps them and takes them to the frozen river so they can attempt to cross into the dangerous unknown. But even in their worst dreams, they have no idea how horrible it will be when at last they find the beloved animal.
...The tip of Wolf's bushy silver tail was matted with dried blood: but it wasn't that which turned [Torak] ill with fear. It was the slimy greenish-black flesh which showed through in patches. Flesh which stank of rottenness.
"It's the blackening sickness," said Renn. "It's poisoning him. The worms of sickness are eating him up from inside."
Once again, Michelle Paver has created a magical world in which good and evil are constantly at war. Torak and Renn are more fully realized as their characters mature and endure harrowing experiences. Paver's writing is fluid and strong, capturing the language, landscape and personalities of this ancient time. Readers of the first two installments of the Chronicles of Ancient Darkness series will be thrilled with this story --- probably the most powerful book yet.

A considerable improvement........2007-04-20
I enjoyed Wolf Brother but hated Spirit Walker and I was weary that this entry in the Chronicles of Ancient Darkness series was going to be just as meandering and slow. Fortunately it's not and it's just as good as the first book.
Wolf is kidnapped by the evil Soul Eaters so Torak and Renn must chase after them into The Far North to rescue him. Their chase brings them to the Eye of the Viper, a cave deep, deep in a mountain where the Soul Eaters have made their lair and intend to sacrifice 9 hunters to unleash demon hoardes under their control upon the world.
The mythology is getting a tad out of hand though. I don't know whether these forest people simply don't understand science and physics and mistake everything for fate, miracles and magic or if it's just their ancient point of view trying to make sense of it. That complaint aside, it's a good book that you'll not want to put down until you've finished it. It's way more fast moving than Spirit Walker and brings the COAD series back on track.
Great series........2007-04-07
It was a cool book. I like how it took place on a icy snowy mountain. Can't wait for the fourth book to come out!! This from the mouth of an adventurous 10 year old boy.
Great Companion Book for the Series.......2007-03-20
While this book has many surprising twists and turns, it is enjoyable and fun to read. Once again we follow Torak, Wolf, and Renn viewing them all, from there point of view.
Very mild changes do happen though, such as, Wolf now calls Renn 'The Pack Sister' instead of 'Female Tailess'. And Renn also has a much major role in the book then say in WOLF BROTHER, and also the book switches to her view more.
This is a very enjoyable book and I recomend it to any one from 10-100.

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Book Description
Has Keisha found happiness at last?
In her senior year, things are finally looking a little brighter for Keisha. Still haunted by the suicide of her ex-boyfriend, Andy, she finds comfort in the attentions of the new track coach, twenty-three-year-old Jonathan Hathaway, the principal's son. How can Keisha not be swept off her feet by a tall, dark, handsome "lemon drop wrapped in licorice" who treats her like a woman, not a girl?
But suddenly this intoxicating relationship takes a frightening turn, and Keisha is once again plunged into the darkness she's fought so hard to escape. Will Keisha ever be able to find her way back into the light?

One mother's opinion.......2007-08-27
My teenager and I just finished reading this book as a summer reading requirement for school. We both agreed that it was one of the worst books we had ever read. The conversations were silly, the word "dude" was said at least 3 dozen times (who says "dude" anymore anyway?) and the situations were melodramatic to say the least. We both agree there are much better options out there for high school students and our hope is that the English teacher who chose this for class won't require any more from this author.
Fantastic!!!.......2006-05-29
This book is continuation of Tears of a Tiger. Keisha was Andy's girlfriend and now left with rest of her friends Ronda, Tyrone, BJ, Gerald, and Leon to survive without out their two friends Andy and Rob, who both died. Now in her senior year Keisha is selected class president and is having the best year. The principal's 23-year-old son is the new track coach and he has his eye on Keisha. Slowly Keisha begins to find comfort in 23-year-old Jonathan and starts going out with him. Soon the relationship takes a wrong turns when Jonathan takes Keisha to his apartment and tries to rape and kill her with his jack knife.
Sharon M. Draper is the greatest well-known writer that I know. I love his style of writing and how she brings her characters to live. Every book she ever made is great and I can't wait til she makes more.
Painfully Wonderful.......2006-02-25
There is pain in this book that you hope no one goes through. It follows Keisha after the death of her boyfriend, which is one thing she could've done without and then the near-rape she encounters. (Read TEARS OF A TIGER first.)
This book makes you wonder about the amount of suffering in the modern black community; does Draper portray it as harsher than it really is, or do more people than we want to think live these kind of lives?
This book is more than fiction. It is an epic.
Christian's Review.......2006-01-18
In the book a girl named Keisha has just lost her boyfriend. Andy killed himself because he and his best friends Rob, Tyrone, and B.J were in a car accident. Rob was the only one that didn't make it out of the car and he burned to death. Andy felt that it was his fault so he walked around with all this on his shoulders until he killed himself. Keisha had just broken up with Andy because of all his problems. That summer Keisha took Andy's little brother with her to the cookout. The cookout was something that the high school does every year and the students come and bring their little brothers and sisters. This summer, Keisha saw a guy that she thought was hot, so the summer passed and the new school year came. When she saw him, she acted as if she hadn't noticed him, but she did and she really liked him. At the same time, Leon liked her but she really had not paid any attion to that until one day she gave him a ride home and his dad started to say all this embracing stuff. So the conflict is she has to choose a boy (Leon) or a man (Jonathan).
I chose this book because I read the first book and I liked it, so I just continued to read them. No one recommended it to me but when I first started everyone would say that's a good book. I chose the book because I read the back. I like the author cause she knows how to express her feelings.
I would recommend this book to any one in high school and middle school. This book is really good but at first it is boring but it gets good in the middle I feel as though it gets good and you can relate to the emotion. It was easy to read cause she is just out in the open. She doesn't make things that are simple so confusing. The end was good. I was satisfied with the resolution.
My daughter liked it.......2005-12-15
My teenage daughter liked the book. Some of the dialogue was a little difficult to follow in certain places, but all in all she said she could really identify with the setting and situations. She liked it so much she wanted to read other books by her - so we ordered "Julio and Romiette". She really loved that one and shared it with her girlfriends who are still passing it around!

Content 5 stars; binding zero stars.......2007-09-08
I hate to do this, but other buyers should be aware: I have the July 2005 printing (paperback; the only one available from Amazon) and it has the absolute cheapest, flimsiest glue binding I have ever seen on a book. The cover became detached before I was done looking through it the first time, and now that I have looked through it exactly once, the page sections are starting to fall away from the remaining glue strip. And I am being very careful with it. What a disappointment as the photos are stunning, the text and interviews fascinating, and the quality of the photo pages themselves excellent.
Mindblowing story and amazing pictures. .......2007-07-05
This book tells a story of a place most people have never heard of and no longer exists, but was the most densely populated place in the entire world at one point. It does it by well-written text, interviews with people that lived in this one-of-a-kind place, and priceless pictures. Google "The walled city of Kowloon", read up on it, and you won't be able to resist getting this book.
important book.......2007-03-19
the book offers great insight in the extreme circumstances under which people lived in the kowloon walled city. superb photografic material covering a wide aspect of the city and relevant text. a must for people interested in urban vernacular architecture.
One of the best books I've ever seen!.......2006-03-04
Everyone who I have ever shown this book to has had a deep reaction to it. I wouldn't handicap this book by calling it a photography book alone, although the photos are very powerful and prominent, but the text deserves recognition aswell. Plenty of personal stories of how people made this decaying city their home. Both epic and intimate. A testament of the human animal's ability to adapt and thrive. Thank god the authors got in to Kowloon before its destruction to create this book.
Also, as a side note: Any artist wanting reference material for decaying urban sprawl, look no further. This book makes for great city or science fiction reference, with unbelievable details (electrical boxes, pipes, hallways, stairwells, etc...)
City of Darkness--Life in Kowloon Walled City.......2005-09-03
I was born in Hong Kong and lived in the Walled City for 2 years with my mother when I was 10. Love the photos, history, and facts about the walled city, bring back lots of memories.

Book Description
Who would murder a dying man? Why would someone steal a box of rocks? And why would a rich man's wife pay $3,000 to get them back? These questions haunt Sgt. Jim Chee of the Navajo Tribal Police as he journeys into the scorching Southwest. But there, out in the Bad Country, a lone assassin waits for Chee to come seeking answers, waits ready and willing to protect a vision of death that for thirty years has been fed by greed and washed in blood.

Customer Reviews:
Enjoyable Read.......2007-03-15
This is one of Tony Hillerman's better books. I heartily recommend it.
Skinwalkers, Navajo Wolves and Witches.......2007-03-13
In "People of Darkness", Navajo tribal police Sargent Jim Chee stumbles onto a mystery and unravels multiple crimes after being asked to find a keepsake box belonging to a wealthy man outside of Chee's jurisdiction. The wealthy man's second wife specifically requested Chee as investigator because Jim Chee is considered an authority on his Indian tribe's religion, studying to be a "yataalii" (a medicine man or "singer") and the suspects are thought to be The People of Darkness.
It is in this book that blue-eyed blonde, Mary Landon first makes her acquaintance with Chee. I found her to be an unlikable character with an aggressive, pushy, prodding, provocative, smart-mouth personality and arrogant attitude and was glad to know, from reading subsequent books of this particular series, Chee and she never married.
Alas, it is also in this book that Chee is on another mission - to learn more about white people and their culture. His yataalii uncle, who was to train him in the art along the path of balance and beauty, instructed Chee that he must first truly understand the value system of the white people, knowing everything it contains, before fully being able to embrace his decision of following the traditional Navajo walk.
Tony Hillerman packed this book full of relevant Navajo culture and lore, as always. Near the end of the story, Chee explains, "We don't have much violence, we Navajos. What there is is mostly associated with witchcraft. Changing Woman taught us how to cope with the Navajo Wolves. We turn the evil around so it works against the witch." The story ends with Chee's spirit in need of repair: "But he knew the cause and the cure. Changing Woman had taught them about it when she formed the first clans of the Dinee from her own skin. The strange ways of strange people hurt the spirit, turned the Navajo away from beauty. Returning to beauty required a cure." Hence the planning for a traditional Enemy Way ceremony to be held.
As with all of the Tony Hillerman books, I would give more than five stars if I could.
Going back to reading some earlier Hillerman books..........2005-12-05
I really enjoy all of Hillerman's mysteries. I could tell this was an earlier one not just by the wear and tear of the book, but because his writing has changed and matured for the better in substantial ways. It's interesting how most women mystery writers tend to get worse with time, become more formulaic and can't break the mold. In Hillerman's books, I think the increasing emphasis on the culture and history of the 'four corners' area of the U.S. and the native Americans who live in that area, is as much a pull to his books as the mysteries are.
This book included a big part of the plot dealing with what are called Navajo 'wolves', which I guess does not exactly converge with European idea of witches, but rather a choice on the part of a person to choose to live out of harmony with their religious and familial beliefs. I actually wonder if we shouldn't come up with a word for that, because the idea of witches is archaic and from the Middle Ages, but many people make choices against societal mores everyday (and getting worse) and we need a new word for that.
Chee gets involved because of his own desire to become a practitioner of his tribe's religion as a shaman (though that word is wrong here also). Chee meets one of the women who have impacted his life and becomes torn about between the 'white man's world' and that of his own people. Apparently, several Indians are dying or have died from a long term illness, cancer, which under normal condition cannot be given to a person like a influeza virus. At the same time, are several unexplained shootings, all having to do with a religion that became active during my teen years having to do with eating peyote buttons (cactus) with hallucinative abilities. I knew about this in CA because in the Bay area all the hippies were trying all kinds of drugs like LSD, and marijuana, and peyote was another one we would hear about, but of course this was outside the religious use.
This book and it's plot was very interesting. Hillerman just wound up the ending really fast without explaining some things concerning the gunman hired to hurry up the deaths of the Indians, and a man who had too many fingers in too many pies...a white man who was fighting with other white men and other Indians concerning this religion and a 30-year old unsolved bombing of a oil drill. We would hear all about those too when we would go to see our grandparents in Mesa, Arizona and the unfair treatment of the Native Americans over their lands and the mineral rights of those lands.
Hillerman's later novels are more satisfying, but as with most talents, some people do get better with time and age...

a long overdue celebration of Navajo culture.......2005-04-24
Tony Hillerman gives Anglos like me who grew up near the Navajo Nation and other reservations and are curious about these cultures but have no real means of accessing them a way of learning more about them and how members interact with mainstream America in modern times. I've read 5-6 Hillerman titles, and I've enjoyed each one. But this one is an especially good one.
If you like Hillerman's books, try The Shaman Sings and others from the Charlie Moon Mystery series by James D. Doss. These books are set in the Ute reservation of southern Colorado and, to my mind, they portray the Utes and Ute culture in a way that is equally realistic and detailed and respectful to what Hillerman does for Navajos. These books celebrate Native cultures in a way that is long overdue.
In addition, there is a series of novels about a Mayan detective in the Cancun area of the Yucatan Peninsula that are a pretty good read. I tried to track down the name of the author with an Amazon search, but I had no luck. I'll add that name and a couple of titles to this review later if I can track it down.
PS I notice that Hillerman has also published several non-fiction titles. If you enjoyed this book and his other fiction, some of these may be worth checking out, as well. I plan to do so.
A Fast and Entertaining Read.......2004-12-20
Lt. Joe Leaphorn was author Tony Hillerman's first detective, created for the 1970 novel THE BLESSING WAY. He was a truly original figure: a Navajo employed as a law enforcement officer on Native American lands in the Southwest and a man with both a deep respect and understanding of the ways of his people. The character Jim Chee does not differ greatly from this mold--but he does have one significant advantage. By the time Jim Chee appeared in this 1982 work, Tony Hillerman had learned how to create a tightly woven novel, something that was not always the case in the early Joe Leaphorn books.
THE PEOPLE OF DARKNESS introduces Jim Chee, a young reservation law enforcement officer who struggles to find balance between the traditional ways of the Navajo and the cultural incursions of the white man. In this particular novel, Chee is summoned by a wealthy woman to investigate a theft; the circumstances are, however, extremely unusual--and as he slowly peels through the various layers of deception Chee finds himself tracking members of a cult-like religion with ties to a tragic accident more than three decades in the past.
This is one of the better Hillerman novels. As always, the author is extremely respectful of native American tradition, and he paints a fascinating portrait of traditional beliefs and patterns of behavior. Unlike such novels as THE BLESSING WAY and LISTENING WOMAN, the plot is tightly constructed and winds back upon itself in such a way that one can honestly consider it a mystery novel--something that cannot always be said for a Hillerman work. Well written, PEOPLE OF DARKNESS is a fast and entertaining read. Recommended.

Customer Reviews:
Fabulous book!.......2007-09-02
I loved this series so much that after reading it I immediately went back and read it again! I cannot wait for the fourth book to come out! I have bought the series for three friends who have children and am twisting my husband's arm to read it too.
Page After Page of Action and Mystery!.......2007-02-26
The year is c. 4000 B.C. Torak's father has just been killed by an enormous grizzly bear. Before he died, he instructed Torak to stop the bear. To do this, he must find the legendary Mountain of the World-Spirit. None who venture there ever return. 12-year-old Torak is terrified of his mission. Stumbling along, he finds a wolf cub that he names Wolf, whose pack was killed by a flood. Torak discovers that he can talk to Wolf, using body language, yips, and growls. Remembering his father's words, "Your guide will find you," he suspects that Wolf is his guide. Wolf and Torak, on their journey north, are captured by Raven Clan. While in captivity, Torak discovers that a prophecy says he alone can defeat the demon bear that killed his father. A Raven girl named Renn helps them escape, to ensure that the prophecy is fulfilled. They continue on their journey north together. Renn proves extremely helpful in their quest, as she is the best shot in the Open Forest.
Wolf Brother is a great adventure story. It shows the bond between Wolf and Torak very well. Wolf risks his life to lure the demon bear away from Renn in a heart-stopping chase scene. After the first few pages, I couldn't put it down. Wolf Brother has page after page of action and mystery. All through the book, Torak struggles with his father's giant shadow. The mystery of his father's death is only revealed in the end by Fin-keddin, his father's best friend. He is the leader of the Ravens and also Renn's uncle. I would give this book five stars. Michelle Paver's masterpiece is great for all you 12 to 14 year olds. You have no life if you don't read this book!!!!! -- Googoo4Dragons

Fantasy Book Review.......2007-01-08
Torak makes it up to the Mountains of the World Spirit with the Nanauk. Torak with the help of the wolf cub have saved their world! There is a young boy named Torak and his father is called Fa' that live and hunt in the forest. One day, all of a sudden they are attacked by a demon bear and Torak is forced to go on by himself. He swore to his father that he would take the Nanauk, a box containing the river eyes, the stone tooth, and the lamp, up to the Mountains of the World Spirit or he would die trying to make it there. They are a part of a Wolf Clan. While Torak is on his own looking for some where to make camp, he ends up meeting a wolf cub. They team up together to make it to the Mountains of the World Spirit. Finally Torak and the wolf cub make it to the mountains and defeat the demon creatures and set the forests free. I would recommend this fantastic book to any teenager who enjoys reading fantasy books.
One reason why I recommend this book is because it has outstanding characters. For example, Torak is part wolf and is a teenager such as myself. Also, the bear is a demon and kills for pleasure. In addition, the wolf cub can speak to Torak and is loyal to him. All of the characters are different from their normal species.
Another reason why I think this book is fantastic is because it has a variety of events that take place. For example, Torak and his father are attacked by the demon bear. Also, Torak meets the wolf cub and was planning to eat him. In addition, Torak and the wolf cub work together to take the Nanauk up to the Mountains of the World Spirit.
Finally, I recommend this book to fantasy readers because it makes you feel as though you were there. Like when Torak is in the forest looking for food and hears all of the diverse creatures. Another example is when Torak has to say goodbye to his father after being attacked by the demon bear. Last, when Torak reaches the Mountains and knows that he has made his father proud. All of these events help the reader to relate to the characters in the book.
I would recommend this fantastic book to any teenager who likes to read fantasy books. It has outstanding characters, a variety of events that take place, and makes the reader feel as though they are experiencing what the characters feel. The author does an amazing job of keeping the reader on his/ her toes. Any teenager who loves fantasy books should read the Wolf Brother Series #1 by Michelle Paver.

Wolf Brothers is Captivating.......2006-12-24
Wolf Brother is a very interesting book. I like it a lot, and I finished it in about three weeks. I like this book because it holds you captive until the very end. It has information about how to survive in the wild. It has phrases of ancient times. It's spooky, but it turns out good at the end. It has all this stuff about spirits and demons. It's about a young boy named Torak whose father dies in the beginning of the book. It was a sad but flowing book. Torak takes risks where he could have died, but he has to find the Nanauk, which are three objects Torak must find to solve a riddle that will help him defeat a bear that has a demon in it. A group of mages (a seer or fortune teller) called the Soul Eaters put a demon from the Otherworld into a bear and now Torak has to find the High Mountain in order to defeat the bear. It's captivating and you won't want to stop turning the pages until you finish!

Book Description
SHE GREW UP IN THE SHADOWS OF LIES.
NOW THE PAST WILL COME TO LIGHT.
As a child, she was Baby Celeste, the one thing that kept her mother in touch with reality. But now her mother is in an institution, damaged by years of lies and secrets, and sixteen-year-old Celeste Atwell is alone in the world. Adopted by a wealthy couple, Wade and Ami Emerson, Celeste has everything a girl could desire: designer clothes, luxury cars, even a handsome boyfriend. But her new life is shrouded in mystery:
Ami acts more like a girlfriend than Celeste's adoptive mother -- what mother would encourage her daughter to flirt outrageously and dress in racy outfits? Wade, meanwhile, stoically accepts his wife's wild spending sprees and over-the-top behavior. Celeste is about to discover the true price of having it all -- because the secrets hidden within the Emerson household are too dangerous to keep under wraps....
Customer Reviews:
Very disappointing.......2006-12-24
I will not write much on the obvious flaws of this book, how it left many questions unanswered, etc. This has been written by others already. I just wanted to add something that no one else seems to have commented on. The ghost writer screwed up the timeline again (as he has done in previous books). In the beginning of the book, (big) Celeste is interviewed at the mental clinic. The doctor's report says she is 17 yrs, 4 months old. The doctor mentions that Baby Celeste was 6 yrs old at the time. That would've made big Celeste 11 yrs old when she had her! Huh?! In the book "Celeste", when Celeste meets Elliot Fletcher (who later gets her pregnant), she tells him she is 15 yrs old. So, by the beginning of the book "Child of Darkness", big Celeste should've been 21 yrs old. Apparently, Andrew Neiderman does not know how to count! Get with the program, dude!
And you should have written more about the fate of big Celeste, who was a much more interesting character anyway.
Worst of the Three- Left a lot to be Desired.......2006-06-01
I was quite disappointed in how this trilogy ended. I had to read this final book, of course, to see how this story all ended up, but instead, it left me with more questions. Not only was Baby Celeste's story never resolved, but neither was her mother's. I was looking so forward to a happy, healthy reunion between mother and daughter, and I didn't even get that much.
The characters in this story had nothing to do with the first two books, and it was as if it was a story of its own. Wrapping up the trilogy was crammed into the last couple of chapters, and it was never even really wrapped up. At the risk of giving too much away, the book never explained whether or not the first Celeste was ever mentally healed, and it never showed whether or not Baby Celeste and her mother were ever able to have a real relationship. It was sad, really. Even worse, it never even explained what happened to everyone else that came into Celeste's life during the first two thirds of the book, including a new boyfriend who always pledged his love and devotion to her, and her twisted adopted family who she ran away from. Instead of getting answers to the first two books, it just created a second story to not have the answers to. Very frustrating and unsatisfying.
While the first two novels in this series were page turners, this last one was dull, slow-moving, and non-resolving. Sorry for those of you who read the first two and need to purchase this one for the trilogy's ending- you won't get the answers you seek.
Overall better than most of the later series.......2006-03-29
I loved VC Andrews...My Sweet Audrina, Flowers in the Attic, Heaven...she gave us characters and families that made an impression.
However after her death, the ghostwriter (Andrew Neiderman, from what I hear) began recycling her plotlines. Names & settings might change, but you knew there would be any combination of the following 1) incest, 2) a mean grandmother, 3) a tragedy-induced haircut, 4) a big family secret involving someone's paternity--usually the result of rape and/or incest and 5) a crazy relative.
The Gemini series started better than most. It felt like Mr. Neiderman was finally capturing VC's true voice...maybe he even developed psychic abilities of his own and started channeling VC However, the writing in the 2nd book started to slip (And why did "Mommmy" suddenly become "Mama"...especially when we all know that VC herself always used "Momma")...and the timeline started to fall apart.
I think Mr. Neiderman could truly write a book to equal VC's earlier works, if he would just slow down. It seems like there's new book every time I turn around...and the writing shows the lack of care and attention.
I agree with other reviewers...I would like a prequel (preferably one where the main character DOES NOT get locked in a room during her pregnancy...'cause you know that's probably what happened to "Mommy" when the first Audrina...ahem, I mean the first Celeste aka Baby Jordan was born).
I would recommend the series for a cold rainy weekend...All 3 books are quick and easy reads.
Dissappointing..........2006-02-27
This book was dissapointing to say the least. Despite my attempts to avoid the back cover. The picture on the back gave the story away. I spent the majority of my time waiting for Basil to rape Celeste. The only redemption comes in the way that it takes place and the fact that they had been planning it since the beginning!
Though I was amused with the storyline leading up the the big event I was extrememly dissapointed with the resolution. I did not know going into it that it was the final book in the series. In fact, I actually came online looking to see if there were more books in the series.
So many questions were left unanswered... What happened to big Celeste? Did the young Celeste end up pregnant? What happened to her boyfriend, the one who professed his neverending love and devotion to her? Did he just forget about her? Did the other kids at school wonder where she went? Did Ami, Wade, and Basil go looking for her? Did mother Celeste and daughter Celeste ever develop a normal relationship? Did mother Celeste ever recover from her illness? Did young Celeste ever regain her clarvoiyance? Did she finish school? Did she marry? Have any other children?
I am still in shock that the series is over. I don't understand how this story could possibly serve as a proper ending. I seriously recommend that the ghostwriter get to work quickly on an epilogue and quite frankly, a prolouge , to explain to the readers what happened and why it all happened.
I am so dissappointed, in fact, that I am afraid to start another series in fear that it will leave me with as many questions as this one. It's a shame really.
better than the 2rd one.......2006-01-12
I liked this one. You knew the the girl was going to be raped but the reason was not just to rape her. This book is a lot better the the 2rd one. The first one was ok but this one was the best. She was not as messed up as her mother & grandmother. The grandmother was the worst & her mother didn't have a chance.
Book Description
Isak Dinesen and the land and people she loved are nowhere so real and compelling as in Longing for Darkness, written by Dinesen's majordomo, Kamante, and now boasting a smart new cover. Readers familiar with Out of Africa may recognize many of the enchanting stories. These celebrated tales and others are retold here from Kamante's perspective and are enhanced with his own drawings and letters, Dinesen's words and snapshots, and photographs by Peter Beard. Writes Beard, "Over a period of 12 years, as if divesting himself of his possessions, Kamante put down the extra dimensions of truth which are at the heart of Out of Africa."
Customer Reviews:
Nice pictures but ultimately boring.......2001-07-07
I love the subject and the presentation of this book, but the text, which is written in Kamante's naive and simple English, lacks substance. There is no point to his quaint observations and this kind of narrative can only appeal to the real Dinesen and Out of Africa fanatics who have to collect her every account. It's the kind of book you read once, think it looks great on the coffee table, perhaps try to give it to your young niece, was unsuccessful, and ultimately lob off at a garage sale. I returned it promptly.
The book as dream and fondest memory.......1999-08-08
I had a hardback copy of a previous edition which somehow slipped through my grasp and for which I have been searching vainly for twenty years. The combination of cultural perspectives effortlessly and simulataneously presented in a correspondent range of visual and graphical styles, telling stories of quiet appreciation and respect enchanted me like no other book, and I am grateful at least for finding a paperback edition and a thread to keep my hopes alive.
For all Karen Blixen lovers.......1998-12-29
Peter Beard has lived near Karen Blixen's farm and collected her story from many of her friends and staff in Africa. In this beautiful book he assembles excellent original photographs of Karen Blixen and enhances them with photographs of his own from Africa. The commentary is by Kamante Gatura, Karen Blixen's cook. A fascinating book, especially because Kamante's version differs from that of some of Karen Blixen's biographers. The illustrations compliment a reading of Linda Donelson's "Out of Isak Dinesen in Africa: Karen Blixen's untold story."
My most treasured possession - exquisite, magical!.......1998-03-18
Peter Beard has shown us another dimension of Isak Dinesen's (Karen Blixen) life as told in "Out of Africa". This time however, those days are described by Kamante Gatura, who, as a young boy was employed by Ms Dinesen. Kamante's memories are translated & written down...the result is an enchanting, magical book; it is the only book I would risk everything for to retrieve from a burning building...it is my most treasured possession.

"The mole, his hunting place is darkness.".......2006-07-11
"The mole, his hunting song is silence."
Sgt Jim Chee of the Navaho tribal police is asked by the wife of Benjamin J. Vines to retrieve a mysterious box stolen from her husband's safe while he was away. When mister vines returns he tells Chee that it was all a mistake and hands Chee a check. We all know Chee can not let this lay still so the mystery leads him to people that use a mole for their talisman "The people of Darkness" and it appears that something (or someone) is killing them all off.
The mystery is fair and Tony Hillerman does not hide clues or surprise suspects to the last minute so it is not too hard to guess most of the plot or who the good guys and bad guys are. We are introduced to the Navaho concept of witches and Mary Landon who will play parts (if she survives) in future novels. In the process we get a vivid description of the four corners and other areas near buy. In People of darkness he picks up a Lota Burger and I have eaten a few of them my self. In future books we will be introduced to the Navaho Taco. For the anthropologist in us he describes many sings and ways.
