En la sexta aventura del Capitán Alatriste y el no tan joven Iñigo, nos echamos a la mar, en una galera llamada la Mulata a pelear por el rey de España contra los Turcos, piratas Berberiscos, holandeses e ingleses pero no todo es abordajes y saqueos en alta mar, también un poco de acción y aventuras en tierra junto a un nuevo compañero que se a unido al grupo el Moro Gurriato, un personaje muy interesante. El autor logra impresionar con su descripción de la Nápoles del Siglo XVII su ambientación, sus calles y recodos, te entretiene al igual que las aventuras en el mar. Un mundo corrupto en tierra y peligroso en el mar.

La novela toca un momento en la historia cuando las relaciones entre la cristiandad y el Islam se limitaban a batallas navales y razzias en las costas del mediterráneo con el fin de capturar y esclavizar a todos aquellos que estuvieran en el camino. Los corsarios del norte de África eran apoyados por el sultán de Constantinopla, el tema del corso en el mediterráneo no a sido muy difundido por esto es que la novela me a llamdo la atencion.

Los enfrentamientos navales están llenos de acción, fuego y pólvora, puede que te pierdas un poco por el vocabulario naval, pero de seguro que la pasaras muy bien. Es una novela histórica meramente de toque militar, con una pequeña cantidad de drama que deja para mucho mas en la siguiente entrega.

Each book builds more suspense than the previous one read. "Limpieza de sangre" depicts milestone features about life in Spain in the first quarter of the 17th century. Without digressing too much into the social and political quagmires affecting the court of Phillip IV and his infamous, yet resourceful, prime minister Conde Duque de Olivares, Mr. Perez-Reverte's pen takes us to another nail-biting plot involving the Spanish Inquisition. His narrative is once again meticulously labored and his characters are produced quite graphically. His sense of detail is both powerful and realistic.

Iñigo Balboa,un jovencito que llegará a ser escudero de Alatriste, será quien nos narre lo que pasa: con su óptica de niño que se hace hombre, de cómplice de un extraordinario soldado que no tiene pares con la espada, pero que por honor desafía a un hombre de poder, a inquisidores. This is the second book in the Capitán Alatriste series, a sequel to "El Capitán Alatriste" (a.k.a. "Un asunto de honor") and preceding "El sol de Breda". It tells of Alatriste's new adventure in XVII century Spain. Whereas the first book in the series was relatively light-hearted, this second book dwelves on one of the darkest episodes of Spanish history, the Inquisition, and is a deep but very entertaining exploration of the darkest corners in Spanish character. However, this is only a part of what goes on in this book. There's also quite a bit of swashbuckling adventure, romance, and mistery. The action is tightly plotted, and some historical figures make brief cameos. The author has put a lot of care in using a language that's not too modern for the story but that isn't academic, either. No wonder Arturo Pérez Reverte is the best selling writting in contemporary Spain. His flair for intelligent and entertaining novels makes him a sure winner.

La quinta entrega de las aventuras del Capitan Alatriste y I?igo de Balbo regresa con un toque de aventuras, teatro, arte, comedias, conspiraciones para derrocar a la corona Espa?ola y muchos buenos duelos, si nos has leido las otras aventuras puede que te pierdas un poco pero realmente no es necesario ya que cada novela es muy diferente a la anterior, los a?os no pasan por el Capitan Alatriste pero si por I?igo de Balboa el fiel ayudante del Capitan.

I?igo nos cuenta como se trama una conspiracion contra el Rey de Espa?a por los corrales de comedias en la Madrid del Siglo XVII, muy interesante el repaso por los mejores y famosos Maestros del Teatro, Lope de Vega y Calder?n de la Barca, el retrato de la Espa?a de Felipe IV es impresionate, esta es una de las mejores Novelas historicas que he podido leer, entraras en un mundo casi olvidado por los Espa?oles y muy poco conocido en America Latina, la corrupcion y desgracia del Imperio Espa?ol es muy bien relatada ya lo dice el mismo autor que nos deja con un mal sabor en la boca "que buen vasallo ser?amos si tuvi?ramos buen se?or".

Recomendado solo si has leido los cuatro libros previos. Pienso que puede ser repetitivo algunas veces pero si Diego Alatriste tambien te ha despertado la imaginacion encontraras en este libro una secuela que no te decepcionara. No queda sino batirnos por el capitan!

For native spanish speakers this is a great book, with a great story and interesting characters. However, for english speakers learning spanish, the text is extremely difficult to translate, with a massive new vocabulary to learn. Only get this if your spanish is extremely advanced.

This (and the other Alatriste novels which follow it, I suspect) is a good read for a second-language reader. One needs to keep the dictionary handy--there's a fair amount of archaic vocabulary and expressions-- but in this respect I did not find it any more difficult than Pérez-Reverte's more contemporary novels, e.g., Reina del Sur, which is full of Mexican narcotraficante argot. The fact is, Pérez-Reverte likes words and uses a lot of them, including some obscure ones. As a language learner, that's good for you, like spinach, and the interesting plot, ambience, and characterizations--the storytelling--help it go down easily.

I can't believe the only 2 bad reviews were given by people who din't know the book was written in Spanish. I read the book and I personally give it 10 stars for its historic content among other things.

First, the TITLE is written in SPANISH, not German nor ENGLISH!!!

Second, if you feel the vendor didn't provide an accurate description of the book such as the Language Edition don't blame the book. Further, if you want to blame somebody because you can't read the book, blame the editors for not publishing an English version. NOT ALL BOOKS are translated into ENGLISH and viceversa.

Third, for those who wrote the bad reviews give yourself 20 stars for publicly admitting that you were careless/stup.. enough to buy a book that you couldn't read. UNDER THE EDITORIAL REVIEWS you have this NOTE:

Swashbuckling Adventure during Spain's Golden Age.......2004-12-02

Home from the Wars in the Flanders, Diego Alatriste y Tenorio makes his living as a hired swordsman. His clients include irate husbands and lenders who have problems collecting their debts. Capitan Alatriste is the archetypal veteran warrior home from the wars. He is skilled in his craft and he lives quietly by his warrior's code. We have all seen this character played in numerous movies by Toshiro Mifune, Clint Eastwood and Gary Cooper.

What makes the Diego Alatriste character interesting and sets him apart, is that he is an active participant in Spain's Golden Age. His friends include the poet Miguel de Quevedo, the dramatist Lope de Vega and the young painter Diego Velasquez. With this novel, the reader gets both a good swashbuckling adventure and a history lesson. This is one of those novels where the atmosphere is as good as the action.

At 237 pages, this is a very accessable novel for non native speakers of Spanish. One needs only a few years of college Spanish and access to a good dictionary to look up the more archaic Spanish terms. For those interested in reading the whole Alatriste series, I would recommend reading Marcelin Defourneaux's "Daily Life in Spain during the Golden Age". This will help put the series in its proper context.

Este libro me ha resultado muy aburrido, porque el autor se pierde en divagaciones. Las descripciones son demasiado exactas, y casi siempre no vienen a cuento de la trama. Me hubiera gustado más que el autor se centrase en la aventura y en la acción, y evitado en lo posible enrollarse con detalles que hacen perder el encanto de loa novela. Quizá parezca raro, pero para mí el final(en el que Íñigo Balboa cuenta lo sucedido en Breda a Velázquez para que pinte el cuadro), es lo mejor del libro.

Personalmente, prefiero las dos primeras novelas de la saga del capitán Alatriste, y recomiendo, porsupuesto, al lector amante de la intriga, "La tabla de Flandes" y "EL Club Dumas."

Is Alatriste a fictional character?.......2001-06-19

I keep marvelling at Mr. Pérez-Reverte's enviable style and lexicon. Yet another gem of a novel with microscopically researched historical footnotes. However, it looks at times like Iñigo Balboa is kicking Diego Alatriste out of the limelight. This is the first of the books I have read on the series where the young squire is coming of age and eventually coming into stage. He is the narrator, but also the executor of pivotal scenes. Regardless of this meaningless observation, the book is fascinating - yet again. The afterword puzzled me for nights. The editor describes the history of Diego Velázquez's "Surrender of Breda", one of the greatest - if not the greatest - painting of the Baroque period. In it he points out that perennial idiosyncracy of the Sevilian master, namely, redoing his canvas with different scenes or even characters. Was the explanation about Velázquez's self-portrait, perched on the left side along the defeated Dutch army, truly accurate, i.e., was Alatriste originally portrayed in its place? Or is the afterword part of the novel's unconventional fictionalization?

Alistado como mochilero del capitán Alatriste en los tercios viejos que asedian Breda, Íñigo Balboa es testigo excepcional de la rendición de la ciudad, cuyos pormenores narrará diez años más tarde para un cuadro famoso de su amigo Diego Velázquez.

El Capitán Alatriste abandona la villa y corte de Madrid para marchar hacía Flandes y sus sangrientas batallas. Hasta el momento muchos dicen que El Sol de Breda es el mejor de los tres libros que han sido editados yo creo que los tres son muy entretenidos. Dejando a un lado las intrigas de la corte, Don Diego Alatriste vive y hace vivir la crueldad e injusticia y realidad de la guerra en 1625. Haciendo gala de un rigor histórico, Reverte refleja un período de España del que se ha publicado muy poco y que para muchos es hoy en día desconocido. Otras obras recomendadas del mismo autor. El Husar y La sombra del Aguila ambas inspiradas en las guerras Napoleonicas.

El Sol de Breda es el tercer libro de la saga del Capitán Alatriste. Si no has leído los anteriores dos (Las Aventuras del Capitán Alatriste, y Limpieza de Sangre) entonces no leas éste...claro lo puedes leer pero te vas a perder una serie de detalles necesarios para entender a los personajes que ya son recurrentes en este seriado. Si eres atento a los pormenores podrás comenzar a sospechar cuál es La Venganza de Alquézar (uno de los libros que sigue en la serie, y aún no publicado)...si te gusta la lectura que mezcla con precisión matemática la historia con la aventura, entonces adéntrate en esta España de soldados obligados y monarcas decadentes, inquisidores y espadachines, damiselas y bibliotecas en llamas, nombres conocidos y hombres borrados de los libros. Extraordinario.

I could not stop reading it. It transports you to the XVIII century, you can almost feel the fighting, the anguish, the sufferings, the adventures and the honor of being a Spanish Infantry soldier in the European battlefronts. It is the most crude, but also the one with a faster rythm and a more interesting story of the trilogy about Alatriste.

Just finished the fourth of this magical saga of adventures and I cannot wait to purchase the next couple of tomes! Once again suspense crawls with a slow and patient pace, characters are resuscitated from Velázquez's canvases, the narrative borrows conspicuously Cervantine sketches, and the action episodes sprawl spontaneously with diminutely described fencing and brawling scenes. Do Pérez-Reverte's books get published in English? Such Spielbergesque epic is worth its circulation in one too many a tongue.

A Riveting Perez-Reverte Piece.......2001-06-30

In "El Oro del Rey" Perez-Reverte continues the story of Iñigo Balboa and his teacher/mentor/protector Capitan Alatriste. The story has elements of suspense, danger, love, betryal, loyalty, friendship and courage, and keeps the reader so captivated that I had a hard putting down the book and wished the story would never end. In this story Iñigio is betrayed by the women he has fallen dangerosuly in love the beautiful Angelica de Alquezar and is almost killed by the infamous italian hired killer Gualterio Malatesta, only to be saved at the lsat minute by Captain Alatriste and his friends. The story continues on as Captain Alatriste puts into motion the plan to rescue the King's gold with the help of a motley group of hired men that come from the underbelly of 17th century Seville society. It is in this part of the book that Pereze-Reverte shines in his ability to not only spin a good yarn, but to use the various characters, plot, narrative and historical context to make social commentary on Spain's polticial and social development. I highly recommend this book.

Lo que en el lejano 1997 comenzó siendo un entretenimiento, un osado intento de que los niños y adolescentes españoles se aficionaran a la lectura y conocieran un poco de esa Historia que había desaparecido de los libros de texto, se ha convertido, al cabo del tiempo, en la mejor serie de novela histórica en castellano desde Los Episodios Nacionales de Galdos y, en el plano internacional, el mas vivido y épico retrato de una época desde la trilogía de los mosqueteros de Alexandre Dumas.

Igual que, después de Dumas, ya no fuimos capaces de ver al cardenal Richelieu sino como al maquiavélico villano en la sombra, tras Pérez Reverte al gran Quevedo no lo podremos imaginar sin la espada desenvainada y el "no queda sino batirse". Y en eso consiste el genio de la novela histórica: en ser veraz, ser puntilloso en descripciones y lenguaje y además dar vida a esos datos fríos que llenan las biografías en las enciclopedias. Y dar vida a los personajes históricos no consiste en coger un faraón, un emperador romano o lo que sea y ponerlo a descifrar enigmas policíacos. Consiste en tomar personajes reales, con sus virtudes y defectos, y hacerlos actuar según las propias reglas de su tiempo y su carácter.

El gran Arturo, tras mostrarnos en las otras novelas de la saga las mazmorras de la inquisición, las trincheras de Flandes y el puerto de Sevilla, nos lleva esta vez al Teatro. Teatro con mayúsculas porque nunca antes y desde luego nunca después, conocería la Historia tal concentración de genios dedicados a escribir para un publico que convertía cada estreno en un acontecimiento social.

Y ahí estaba el Capitán Alatriste, codeándose con los poetas, encamándose con las actrices y como no, salvando el pescuezo al mismísimo Rey de las Españas. Vuelven el cruel villano Malatesta y Angelica de Alquezar, ese bollicao mezcla de Lolita y femme fatale. Y como no, allí esta también Iñigo de Balboa para contarnos como ocurrió todo.
Finalmente, y como es habitual en Perez Reverte no faltan los "cameos" de algunos personajes actuales que el lector español (no así los ajenos a la realidad española ) no tardara en reconocer. En cuanto al titulo, aquellos que no sigan la trayectoria de A P-R posiblemente no adviertan el guiño sentimental que esconde. "El caballero del jubón amarillo" es, según dice P-R en el prologo de su primera novela "El husar", el titulo de un folletín que el propio padre de Arturo Perez Reverte escribió hace tiempo, cuando el folletin era ya un genero muerto y muchos creían que enterrado. Posiblemente el padre de A P-R nunca imagino que su propio hijo desenterraría el genero y lo elevaría a cumbres no antes holladas.

En resumen: Un nuevo acierto del mejor escritor español vivo.
