Helpful and well written.......2007-09-15
Interesting overview on the topic. As the subtitle suggests this book talks about "turning web sites, blogs, and podcasts into cash". The book is not hard to read, it's language is very friendly and easy to understand, while it's ideas are very mature. The author, it is evident, is very wise on the topic and shares his experience with the readers. There are no fluff or extra talk. Just useful material, ideas, web links, books, web sites, and suggestions based on many years of experience as a content provider.
I took this book from a library, but now I'm considering buying it, so much I liked it!
Highly recommended.
Great beginner's book.......2007-01-06
This book is for blog beginners. It is just specific enough to get started. If that is the kind of primer you are looking for, jump on it fast! If you are already passed stage 1, it might be helpful, but you might find it not advanced enough.
A bible for small businesses.......2007-01-03
JD Frazer uses his humor to great effect in this easy to read guide to how to set up a small web-based business. It is worth the cover price just for the resources that he points the reader towards. A bible for the early part of the 21st century!

Not as good, Not recommended.......2006-11-24
This book is really compact and author tried to put just too much stuff in there, and seem like he tries to touch little bit of every subjects. And he wrote too much of his personal history instead of facts.
For Newcomers, Not Experienced Bloggers.......2006-11-10
Treats numerous topics in blogging, such as RSS, monetizing with ads, and promoting the blog, with a short, informative overview. The sections are brief, no in-depth coverage of topics. A good start for someone thinking of blogging professionally, or just beginning and needing to learn the ropes quickly. Those with more experience and knowledge will find it shallow.

Introduces business and technical managers to the exciting new frontier in database technology
Web sites gather a lot of detailed information about customers. Unfortunately, most companies lack the means to use that information to improve their marketing and customer support functions. Considered by most experts to be the new frontier in the database and data warehousing fields, Web mining solves that problem. Coauthored by two bestselling data mining authors, Mining the Web explains, for corporate decision makers, IT managers, and database marketers, how data mining principles and techniques can be applied to various types of Web sites. More importantly, they describe techniques for using the resulting goldmine of business data to develop more effective advertising campaigns and better customer service.

Mining the Web.......2003-01-18
I found this book to be most helpful and thorough, I was immediately inspired to practice these useful tips and easy to intuit instructions.
I continue to use it for reference as a resource manual. I highly encourage anyone just getting interested in the concept of data mining, anyone in sales, marketing, public relations, and analytics to start with this book first. After reading this book you will have a strong foundation into data mining applications and a vivid sense of direction on how to make it work for you personally!!!!
Cutting Through the Hype.......2002-03-07
We're just starting to look at mining the clickstream, and this is the first book I've found that cuts through the hype and really comes clean on what works and doesn't work. Good, solid techincal information, but better is their coverage of business issues. I love all of the detailed cases. Great job!
Another winner from a great team.......2002-03-07
I own Berry and Linoff's first two books on data mining (Data Mining Techniques and Mastering Data Mining); they're the best, and this book lives up to their standards. All three are great for not just teaching the technical stuff, but how and when to apply it to solve problems I really face at my company.

Book Description
Twenty-five years ago, an unspeakable crime was committed and Roy Slater fled--from the life he thought he wanted, from the memories he couldn't avoid, and from the devastating suspicions of those he called friends. But now that his estranged father is dying, the prodigal son has returned to confront the past--and finds himself inextricably caught up with an old flame and a new murder, one that leads him inevitably back into the twisted web of deceit and violence from which he thought he'd escaped.
In this haunting novel of literary suspense, Edgar Award-winner Thomas Cook once again delves deep into the realms of betrayal, passion and murder.
Customer Reviews:
Wow, this is a good one........2007-03-06
This book will keep you guessing. Excellent writer. I couldn't put it down.
Truly a Web.......2006-07-24
Thomas Cook does a great job spinning this story. It keeps one guessing until the very end. It was easy to delve into each charecter as they were created beautifully. Mystery, romance, father/son relationships all contribute to a tale that is hard to put down.
Slowly I Opened A Vein.......2006-05-28
This book is not poorly written or badly constructed, it is just sooooo depressing. The protaganist is a prep school teacher living in an efficiency apartment in California. He comes home to try and help out while his emotionally distant and unpleasant father dies slowly of cancer in a hellhole of a Kentucky coal mining county. A county so depressed that the people probably go to Hazzard or Harlan countys to see how the rich folks live. Throw in lost love and a simple brother who died too soon and you have a recipe for a less than cheery read. It just didn't let up. Too dark for me.
COMPELLING MYSTERY AND FAMILY SECRETS.......2004-08-07
Few writers are as good as Cook when it comes to mysteries that involve journeying back to the past and finding hidden skeletons. INTO THE WEB is Cook at his finest in narrative, characterization, with a few surprises thrown in.
Roy Slater returns to his West Virginia home after a twenty year absence. He's come back to take care of his father, who is dying of cancer. The father is an embittered, angry, and impersonal man---one wonders why anyone would come back to nurse him. But to Cook's credit, we find there's more than meets the eye in this relationship.
Years before, Roy's brother Archie hung himself in a jail cell after apparently murdering the parents of the girl he was planning to run away to Nashville with. Roy has his own dark secrets and guilt about that night, and about Archie's subsequent suicide.
Sheriff Warren Porterfield is portrayed almost as a mythological giant, a man who got his way in the county and nobody stood in his way. His son, Lonnie, is now the sheriff and he's a carbon copy of his dad.
In investigating what really happened that night, Roy finds himself facing his long lost love, Lila, who said she never wanted him to come back, and to face his father's quest for vengeance...and more.
Roy and Jessie Slater's characters are painfully well-written, and by the end of the novel, Cook has given us two very different people, and didn't cheat to get that effect.
The truth about that night and subsequent occurrences propel Roy and his father into a deadly finale.
Gripping and quite good.
Into the Web.......2004-06-30
After 3 sub-par novels, (Peril, Moon over Manhattan, Taken)
Thomas Cook is back to doing what he does best. Very complex mysteries with a romantic angle to them.
I have been reading mystery novels for over 40 years and when
Thomas Cook brings his "A game" there is no one better. As ususal Mr. Cook ties up all the loose ends and finishes with a surpirse ending.`He never cheats on the ending and he makes the trip to Kingdom County worth the ride.

Less than inspiring content.......2005-01-20
If you have a solid insight into the Web, there's no need to purchase this book. Many of the examples are dated and overly simplistic for readers looking to walk away with greater insights about the Web.
Almost Obsolete.......2004-06-09
Most of the URLs and principles mentioned in the book went back to 2000, and they are no longer valid. I feel that an update is needed. It does have many great ideas, and the book is easy to read. Hope to see a new edition soon.
A complete how-to book to determine the success of a Web sit.......2004-04-05
A complete how-to book to determine the success of a Web site. It clearly explains how to use metrics to quantify business goals. The tools, services, and techniques for measurement described in the book will be helpful for any e-business or other company with an Internet presence. A must-read
A very good Web marketing book.......2002-03-28
This is one of the better books I've read on Web marketing. Some of Sterne's best advice comes in Chapter 1 when he writes, "Having a site that's cool and looks sharp is fine if that's all your target market is really after. The game, though, will go to those who come up with unique services. If you have to choose between fun, interesting, or useful, useful wins. Every time. Hands down."
Sterne starts the book talking about the basic questions in marketing: What are you trying to sell? Who are you trying to sell it to? And, what do they really want? He gives some good advice on working through the process of answering these questions and relates these issues well to Web related marketing. Chapter 3 is a great chapter on usability issues. It's refreshing to see a marketing guy like Sterne give so much attention to usability. There are ample references to Jakob Nielsen's research into usability issues, mixed with Sterne's own good thinking on the subject.
In the middle chapters of the book, Sterne talks about the different ways to effectively use the unique aspects of the Web --interactivity and personalization -- to market to your customers. I particularly liked his discussion of interactivity and flow in Chapter 4. He then goes on to discuss the use of the Web to do customer management and dedicates a whole chapter to partner relationship management. These are probably my least favorite sections of the book. He does give some good examples of companies effectively using the Web for this purpose, but I don't think the chapters on CRM and PRM where very thorough or insightful.
The last few chapters are dedicated to measuring the effectiveness of your Web marketing effort, managing your site, and what the future holds. In the chapter on measuring effectiveness, Sterne talks about the cost to reach and ultimately acquire a customer through your marketing efforts. The following information on Web log analysis was kind of thin, but Sterne does do a pretty good job discussing "The Softer Side of Assessment" like measuring customer satisfaction and reputation management. The chapter on managing your site was thin at best. For site management, I'd recommend Jessica Burdman's book, "Collaborative Web Development: Strategies and Best Practices for Web Teams."
Overall, I'd give Sterne an A on this book effort. The first half of the book is very, very good. The last few chapters felt somewhat rushed. Granted, Sterne picked some chapter topics that should be book topics, but even the summarized information didn't seem well put together. Maybe Jim was getting tired, or maybe I was getting tired. I finished reading this book on a red-eye flight home.
Great Book.......2001-10-26
This is one of the better books I've read on internet marketing. I really recommend this book for anyone who is getting into this web marketing arena.

A Must Read for the Serious Ebay Researcher.......2006-11-01
This book gives a solid overview of the subject of research on eBay. First it talks about the need to do research for eBay. It then reviews some basic caveats and 'gotchas' about eBay research. Then it reviews the 3 leading tools in great detail (Andale, Terapeak, and Hammertap). This alone makes the book worth it. Imagine if you had to spend money on each of those three tools to determine whether you liked them or not? With the detailed coverage of their various features in the book, you can make a decision about which one you might like to use. This book is a must-read for anyone who is serious about selling on eBay and staying competitive. I don't understand the negative review on this book. I suspect the writer of that review has some axe to grind or did not actually read the book.

Misleading Title - Simple Introduction to Data Collection Tools.......2006-05-03
A lot of effort has been put in this book by authors. Unfortunately its worth less. Book's title is hyped up like most books on eBay (big surprise - Any eBay book with big claims in title should be a red flag). In nut shell this book is basically collection of introduction to data collection tools that can be used for eBay. This information (with latest updates) is also available from vendor of tools. I question the value of this book - there is simple none. Here is how this book has failed:
1. To start with what good does it bring for reader to copy information from web and put it in a book. There is even no comparison of tools !!!
2. Authors lack any practical experience in data collection field or on running business on eBay. They have included some small pieces of information from consultants and sellers. But nothing that can add significant value. Reality check - consultants on site optimization are going to share their money milking plans!
3. This book claims that it will help you turn eBay data into dollars (I translate it as saying that it will help you increase sales). In reality data collection tools are only tools. You need a strategy, plan and operating mechanism to take any data and convert into more sales. Beyond data collection the book is completely void of any suggestions on strategy.

The eBay Myth-Bu$ter: An excellent start.......2007-05-07
Being a New Zealander, naturally I prefer to use Trademe.co.nz as that is our local Australasian auction site!
Being focused specifically with busting myths about online auctions Myth-Bu$ter is quite specialised. However, many of the principles found in the book can also be applied to any other local auction sites such as Trademe.
I wholeheartedly recommend the book to kiwis, but (to use a pun) the book does require some unencryption from the American language!
Incredibly useful and concise.......2006-04-07
I have been a buyer on ebay for a couple of years and would like to get started selling. Due to a combination of procrastination and lack of confidence I have not yet taken the leap. Well, now I have the confidence to try. All of my lingering questions were answered by this book. It doesn't walk you through getting started, that would be a waste since that info is available from so many other sources. But it does address things like determining when to start and finish an auction, how long to set the auction for, when to use Buy it Now or set reserve prices, etc.
The author has a really great writing style- not cutesy or gimmicky and very readable. (I read the book in one day- I should have been sleeping, but I couldn't put it down.) He gives great examples of different scenarios that help the reader to be better able apply the information. He tells us his opinion and the opinions of others- he does not bash ebay or paypal but he does give honest observations of some of their practices and services -whether good or bad or simply necessary. I have read alot of informational type books on various subjects lately and reading this one was a really refreshing change of pace. Mr. Busch wrote with confidence but there was nothing self-congratulatory about his style at all- he was even charmingly self-deprecating at times (but not cutesy- I hate that!) The book has very straight forward advice and doesn't waste time trying to hype one way of doing things over another.
Mr. Busch's personal business style is also very appealing and one that I would be happy to emulate. As a buyer, I wish more sellers would follow his example. As a buyer I have often wondered if it was really necessary to put all of those terms and conditions and warnings in the auction- I thought there must just be a ton of bad buyers out there to warrant such practice- but now I know differently. I also find it extremely annoying when I encounter animation or overly busy backgrounds and - worst of all- sound and music when I view an auction.
This book would be great for anyone- there are great tips for buyers- a couple that I will definitely put into use. I would recommend that a person get a little bit of experience on ebay as a buyer before reading this book- then you will really know what is being described and it will have more meaning because you can apply it to your own experiences. A few transactions would really be all it takes. But definitely get this book!!
Excellent Resource.......2006-02-21
My veiw is, you can never read enough books on the subject of eBay. There is always something new you can learn from any book on the subject. I am still an "amateur" but, things are looking good for an amateur...please critique me if you wish:

Clearly one of the better eBay books........2006-01-30
In attempting to get started on eBay as a seller, I read about 10 books. Most covered the same ground, in pretty much the same way. I appreciated Mr.Busch's approach and believe I got more out of this one book than the others that I read up till then. This book is very good.
clears the air.......2005-09-13
Busch hopes to disabuse common misconceptions circulating amongst many eBay users. He presupposes that you have already done some buying or selling on eBay. He goes straight into explaining various aspects. Like how sniping is not against the rules or even the spirit of the auction. And even if it was, it is very problematic that this could be banned.
Another common topic he addresses is that if you lose an auction by $1, say, that somehow if you had bidded $2, you would have won the item. This is not necessarily so. The winner might have placed a maximum bid of $20 above yours. But the eBay mechanism only charged the winner $1 about your bid, which was the second highest.
If you are planning on using eBay frequently, you might want to slowly go through this book. It could be a huge time and worry saver.
Book Description
Once websites were simple and easy to navigate, but didn't contain much useful information. Today, they are packed with information and oftentimes are equally packed with complex navigational systems that confuse more than they help.
Many top Web designers have discovered that there's an art to creating sites that are both vastly informative and simply organized. Their trade secrets are revealed here. This book explores the thinking and methodology behind the creation of 24 simple yet content-rich sites. Here, you'll find insights into how each designer began creating a structure, progressing to wire-frames that illustrate each site's internal organization, and on to screen captures that showcase the final product's simple and accessible design.
With tips from successful professionals, as well as inspiring visual examples, this is a book that no Web designer today can afford to be without.
Customer Reviews:
It was good for the short period of time it covered.......2005-09-09
I liked the way the book showed different case studies, starting with the designer's sketches, sitemaps, thoughts, and comments. The biggest problem with the book is that almost all the sites covered are in a style that has not aged well. These sites are mostly the Flash-based mini-sites that barely cover 1/3 of your screen, and are usually not very content heavy. I don't think that's the way sites are being built today, and in the future. So, really, while it's a nice looking book, it has little relevance to today.
Great book...worth the $15.......2005-06-03
I've purchased God knows how many web design/usability/information architecture books over the years and each one offers something unique. This one offers great pictures and clear examples of web site screen shots, sitemaps, design methods, plus much more.
Overall the book is great and worth the $15!
Accepting the challenge of wedding style to usability.......2003-06-21
Whether you are designing professionally or just for your own sites this attractive volume is worth mining for some usefully creative design strategies you may not have considered. Stefan Mumaw not only offers his perspectives on the sites but shares original drafts, schematics, ven diagrams, and other structural strategizing notes of the sites? creators. You may work better in some of these modes than others, but at least you?ll be encouraged to see new possibilities for working through complex designs.
The twenty-four example sites discussed are corporate but certainly not staid - even those required to be quite serious. The clients range from retail mountaineering equipment to winery to interactive education and even to ad agency; the types of issues, the complexity of information, and necessary ?feel? of the site are therefore quite different. But author Mumaw is taking you back to the *process* with which the sites? designers had to match design and structure to content and mission.
Note that this is NOT a book about *how to* make a design function (i.e., no HTML, DHTML, Flash, etc.), but on how to conceptionalize *what* functions / designs one needs: taking a complex business or organizational message or process and putting an attractive and effective face on it. As a designer, you?ll probably admire some of the results more than others, but I think *almost anyone?s* design savy could benefit by seeing how the experienced artists here tackled some interesting design challenges.
the secrets of visually compelling sites.......2002-06-10
This book is a great source and provides some of the most valuable information on how to achieve a clear information architecture that incorporates good usability and is visually compelling. A real must have.
Concepts behind cool minimalist designs.......2002-06-08
This book is a collection of case studies, like Jakob Nielsen's Homepage Usability. The explanations from one chapter to another tends to be repetitive, and not all of the 24 websites are really-really cool, BUT unlike Jakob's book that just attempted to make long distance intepretations, this glossy hard cover book takes us into the design processes complete with each designers' thinkings, from the early paper sketches, the sitemaps, and the final screenshots. And those insights are good enough for me buy this book.

In failing to provide visitors with great information content, most of today's Web sites are missing a golden opportunity to create loyal customers-and leaving a fortune in new and repeat business on the table. According to Web marketing expert David Meerman Scott, too many marketers focus on style over substance. While a site may win awards for graphic design, Scott demonstrates that the key to Web marketing success is compelling content, delivered in new and surprising ways. In Cashing in with Content, he interviews 20 of today's most innovative Web marketers, sharing their secrets for using content to turn browsers into buyers, to encourage repeat business, and to unleash the amazing power of viral marketing. The book features a diverse range of content-savvy organizations from the worlds of e-commerce, business to- business, and government/not-for-profit, including the Wall Street Journal Online, CARE USA, Kenyon College, Alcoa, Tourism Toronto, Weyerhaeuser, Booz Allen Hamilton, and United Parcel Service.

Serious Business Strategies with Serious Free Information.......2007-09-18
I read a lot of books on Internet marketing, some useful, but many are too confusing to be practical.
Not so with David Meerman Scott's Cashing In With Content (CyberAge/Information Today, 2005). Scott shows how to make money by giving away good information strategically. He provides strategies-by-example for the kind of win-win that seems to drive successful Internet marketing these days.
Scott tours 20 organizations' successful free content strategies. (He says he searched about 1000 sites to find the stories.) They are as varied a lot as one could hope for--from 100+ year old Alcoa to CARE International to popular rock band Aerosmith. Each example is explored through the same format: "What's for Sale," "What's So Interesting," "Why You Should Care," and "Cashing In." In each case, he shows how seriously useful, free information can induce visitors to complete a sales process.
The last chapter summarizes 12 best practices. Example: "Push users with content to pull them back to your site." Another example: "Consider making proprietary content free."
As I read, my imagination popped with ways to cash in with my own content. Highly recommended.
Not a lot of insightful ideas.......2007-09-07
I'm afraid I have to agree with some of the reviews that suggest there is no real explanation of "how innovative marketers are using digital information to turn browsers into buyers". The book is written in a very journalistic style such that you feel you are reading a collection of newspaper articles. Sadly, the information provided is about as high-level as you would read in a newspaper.
For example, the chapter on Alcoa's website insists that the company is providing supplies for the Apple computer, but it does not specify what kind of content attracted Apple causing them to do business with Alcoa. The chapter mentions an article explaining how aluminum is manufactured, but I'm doubtful that was the cause of the new business.
At least, in the chapter on a small college, the author does suggest that they put a button on their site saying "Give Now" and an article explaining how to put the college in your will. I'm certainly glad the college is doing that, but I have to wonder who wouldn't put such a button or an article on their site. Analogistically, it would be like Amazon allowing you to put things in the cart but never providing a way to buy things.
Like others here, I had purchased the book hoping to get suggestions on how to create and benefit from website content as an author myself and a consultant. I feel that the book was not worth the cost, but more importantly, it wasn't worth my time. And please look at my other reviews. I rarely feel bad enough about a book to give it a low review. Being an author, it's hard for me to do that to another author, but this book just didn't deliver for me.
Good book depending on your needs.......2006-06-11
First off, I really feel inclined to say this book isn't for people who are looking to get rich off of the Internet. Please do not buy this book if you are just looking for a get rich quick by shoving content online, and hoping that google adwords will pay off. This book will not assist you in this.
What this book does well is describing effective websites, and sharing good points for developing websites that people will want to use and return to for a long time. He uses commerical websites, non commerical ventures, as well as e-commerce websites to demonstrate good techniques. This book will assist in those who are wanting to really work on high qualtity sites.
I think he does a good job of giving solid techniques and ideas on developing websites that will serve the readers well. So if you are looking to develop websites for the long term, and just want to know what best business practices are in terms of websites, I really think this book is ideal in helping with website development.
Cashing in on nothing........2006-04-03
First I want to say I'm sorry I didn't write this review before getting rid of the book. The information in the book was so useless that I actually already forgot nearly all of it.
There are about 20 or so profiles of different websites ranging from schools to magazines to steel producers. The writeups are very boring and don't really offer any insight on how to cash in on content. If you want to read boring information on how such and such college publishes its fall schedule on line then knock yourself out.
I purchased this book wanting to learn how I could cash in on content. I thought this book would provide examples of the types of content you could try to offer from visitor/user generated, to out right company creation, to purchasing. I expected there to be an overiew of different types of content which you could use to build your website. In fact even a review here mentions how Amazon is brilliant for having users like me and you create content for them. That little nugget and others like it was what I was looking for. Too bad nothing of the sort is even mentioned in the book. You gather more insight about content from that one review than the entire book.
The book is cashing in on suckers with misleading reviews. This book will not help you figure out what content is, what makes it unique, and how to obtain it. The only thing it will do is outline about 20 companies that have websites and how they got to where they are. The majority of pages are about their backgrounds.
Being negative is not something I enjoy, but this book really rubbed me the wrong way.
Look else where if you are looking for inspiration.
A MUST HAVE!!!!.......2006-03-12
This book is everything it promised and more. You can take everything that is covered and apply it to your website to make it some place buyers wish to go when they are ready to buy. It is well writen, easy to read and very informative. The only way this book won't work for you is if you read it and don't apply the ideas you've learned from it to your website.
