Book Description
Maggie Nesbitt is pregnant and depressed, because her husband isn't the father of her unborn child. She's thinking about abortion when she's attacked on the beach. She barely gets away, then gets the shock of her life the next morning when she sees that she has been killed on the news and that her nude body had been dumped in the trash behind a beachside bar. She finds out the body behind the bar is the twin sister she'd been told had died when she was two weeks old. She also learns her twin was divorced from a horrid man and that she had an eight-year-old daughter, Jasmine. Maggie, showing a bump on her head she got while getting away from her attackers, claims partial amnesia and steps into her dead twin's life. This way she can have her baby, give it a home, and save Jasmine from having to go and live with her father. But she doesn't know her twin saw someone do murder. And that someone thinks he killed the wrong woman.

Zips Along Like a Jet Propelled Steam Roller.......2007-03-09
Not long ago Maggie Nesbitt went to a party without her husband, where she met a young Irish lad and did something she shouldn't have. Now she's pregnant, news her newsman husband isn't going to appreciate. Maggie thinks about abortion, but knows she could never do that.
Then out of the blue she learns the twin sister she'd thought had died when they were infants, is still alive. Maggie tracks her down, but never gets to meet her as she is murdered and the body is mistaken for Maggie. Seeing a chance to keep her child, Maggie takes over her twin's identity. But her sister had a child of her own, an ex-husband who is a real piece of work and a best friend who is onto Maggie's charade in no time. And she had one very determined enemy, who is not very happy to see the woman he killed, risen like Lazerus, back from the dead.
To survive this killer, Maggie is going to have to enlist the aid of her new friends, while reaching back to her old life for help as well in this sharply written book that has it all, a crew of lively characters, snappy dialogue and a plot that zips along like a jet propelled steamroller.
Four and a Half Stars for DEAD RINGER.......2007-03-08
The suspense really hums along in Dead Ringer, but it would be a stretch to call this a mystery, since we know right from the get go who the bad guy is. However, this really is a thriller, full of three dimensional characters who seem to jump right off the page. I did enjoy this fun read, but I was led to believe it was a mystery and it wasn't. Still, I felt for Maggie, a woman in trouble who took over her dead twin's life, only to find herself out of the frying pan and into the fire.
And I thought perhaps the Gordon FBI character and his methods might have been a bit sloppy, however, he is a good sidekick for Maggie, who is a superb heroine. Horace Nighthyde, the bad guy, is a villain I actually liked, but the characters who really stand out for me are those two guys who live under the pier. Spooky, they are, but good this book is, even though there is no mystery here.
Some Pretty Cool and Some Pretty Awful People in this Fast, Fun Story.......2007-03-02
This is a slick, well-crafted book that almost reminds me of a fast-paced Martin Scorsese film, the way it jumps from the good girl to the bad guy's point of view in the blink of an eye. There are some pretty cool and some pretty awful characters in DEAD RINGER.
The story starts out with bad guy Horace Nighthyde committing murder. A woman witnesses the crime and Horace knows he has to kill her too. Meanwhile, not too far away, Maggie Nesbitt is despondent, because she had an affair, got pregnant and this is news her not-able-to-have-a-child newsman husband isn't going to be too delighted with. You see, he's had the big snip.
What neither Horace nor Maggie knows is that her twin sister, who supposedly died when she was only a few months old, is alive and well and just witnessed a murder. Horace, of course, kills her, but the body is identified as Maggie's. Thinking this might be the answer to her problems, Maggie takes over her dead twin's life and when Horace discovers the woman he killed has come back to life, well let's just say he's not very happy about it.
DEAD RINGER is the kind of novel that begs the reader to read quickly, just to see what happens next, but it's also enjoyable on every page. The ride through the story is very entertaining, in fact it's a whole lot of fun and the ending, though unexpected, was very satisfying to me, though I can see where some might be unhappy with it. The characters are likable and believable, even the killer. They are all amazingly three dimensional and Mr. Douglas is obviously very skilled at keeping up the suspense.
I Felt Like I was Right in the Story.......2007-02-28
The tension in DEAD RINGER, comes not from trying to figure out who committed the murder, but from wondering whether they'll get away with it. Horace Nighthide is a contract killer who does what he's paid to do, and that is kill a Jap in a stop-and-rob. He goes into the convenience store with a sawed off, see's the Jap, pulls the trigger, then quickly discovers a couple problems on his way out. There were two Japanese men in the stop-and-rob and a young woman has witnessed the whole thing.
Did he kill the right man? That question bothers him not much. But the witness, that's a different problem.
Maggie Nesbitt has her own problems, not as pressing as Nighthide's, but pressing nonetheless. She's pregnant and her husband isn't the father. In fact her husband had a vasectomy, so badly does he not want children. Then Maggie discovers her twin sister Margo, who she thought had died in infancy, is still alive and living not very far away.
Horace Nighthyde has discovered Maggie's twin also, because she's, you guessed it, the witness to his murder. Horace kills Margo, but when he dumps the body without ID, it is mistaken for Maggie. Maggie seizes upon this opportunity and takes over her dead twin's life.
This bothers Horace a whole bunch and makes for a very exciting story. The book moves at a breakneck pace, with the author seemingly enjoying his contrivances. Virtually every chapter ends with a cliffhanger and there is action aplenty. Sometimes the writer is just the guy who drives the car, but sometimes he can put you behind the wheel and you're caught right up in the middle of the death defying action. That's they way it was this book. There was one long chase scene involving a possible nuclear bomb, a porsche and desperate drive into the drink that just thrilled me. I really felt like I was driving that car.
In short, this is an excellent thriller, full of people I cared about, some I loved, some I hated. The ending surprised me and that's a good thing, the perfect way to end an exciting, fun story.
A painful exercise in suspension of belief.......2007-02-24
I love mysteries and thrillers, and I am willing to accept rather unbelievable premises and characters when I read for pleasure, but this book was way beyond what I could take. The characters here are so cartoonish and beyond belief that I could not get over it. The characters make life-changing (including changing someone else's life to death) decisions with incredible lightness and superficiality. They also do very stupid things, suffer the consequences, and just do exactly the same thing within a few hours. In addition, they are all quite superhuman, as they manage to get away from armed thugs way too many times in way too few days. To top it all, the writing is stilted and very dry, so not even that relieves the feeling of reading a rather poor book. I kept at it until the end, however, hoping that it might improve , but the end was even worse than the rest. I cannot think of one character in this book who is even modestly credible.

REALLY WORTH THE READ!.......2005-09-16
I love the suspence and drama drawn out in this one. It had twists that kept you focused. Great Read-so Read it!
Perfect to take on a long plane ride.......2005-07-21
Ms. Solomon has a way of keeping you riveted to the pages and feeling the emotions of her characters. Edge of your seat type suspense,a creepy obsession that will have you wondering if finding out the truth really is worth it, and a new twist to the familiar plot. It's not the type of story that will stay imbedded in your memory as a great read, but it is ideal for keeping you entertained for a short time.
More "Harlequinn Romance" than mystery: Lame.......2005-03-02
Warning! This book is a romance novel. All the quotes on the cover about how great it is are from romance novel publishers. I was looking for a new mystery/suspense type book, and while I enjoy a good romantic story thrown in there, this book is WAY more about the"simmering tensions" between the 2 characters than the mystery. It got old real fast for me, and the romance was pretty predictable too.
If you usually read Harlequinn romance supermarket books, this is a well written book within that genre. If you, like me, avoid "bodice-ripper" romance books at all cost, avoid this one too.
Enjoyed it.......2005-01-11
This is my first book by this author and I'm glad I took a chance. I gave it 4 stars because I don't think the style or story was quite up to my usual favorites like Linda Howard, Elizabeth Lowell, and Kay Hooper. The plot was slightly predictable and I guessed the real bad guy right off. Maybe it was a lucky guess, but there were no surprises for me. Having said that, I still enjoyed the book because of the characters.
Angelina had a terrible thing happen to her that changed the course of her life and how she acted. For the most part, it was realistic. I really felt bad for her and the innocence that she lost. Finn was a good character as well. Hard and unyielding, yet sensitive and caring despite his resolve to not like her. A real likable guy after he stopped being hard on Angel.
This book leaned a little more towards the romance between the two than seriously concentrating on the suspense/mystery. However, I think Solomon did a great job balancing the two. It was a nice enjoyable read.
This was captivating.......2004-10-30
I enjoyed this novel very much. I really was disappointed when it ended. A wonderful read.

Book Description
Philadelphia lawyer Bennie Rosato has her eye focused firmly on the bottom line, especially since she has three dedicated young associates and a very pregnant secretary on her payroll, and she takes a professional risk, charging into a class action lawsuit that could make -- or break -- her career. Never mind that she's never handled anything like this before. Having won nearly every civil and criminal case she's ever tried, the brilliant and unconventional Bennie has the guts, and she'll do what it takes to succeed. Even if that means wearing pantyhose and putting herself on a curse diet.
Then her wallet goes missing. And Bennie's life goes crazy.
It's not just that one of her associates has dyed her hair pink. Or that another's old-world Italian mother gives Bennie the evil eye. But someone posing as the outspoken, blue-eyed, blond attorney is wreaking havoc around town, apparently determined to destroy everything Bennie loves. Only one person can pull off this double deception -- Bennie's identical twin sister, Alice Connelly. But as far as Bennie knows, Alice left Philly long ago and never looked back.
When events escalate into murder, the maverick lawyer realizes that the stakes are far greater than she feared. But Bennie Rosato refuses to be anyone's victim. To find the killer, she'll plunge head-first into a life-and-death investigation that will bring her face-to-face with evil darker yet more familiar than anything before.
A riveting legal thriller set against the backdrop of a richly emotional family story, Dead Ringer is this author's most intriguing novel yet. According to USA Today, "Scottoline's writing style is sharp, intelligent, funny, and hip. She gives fans of legal thrillers a good, twisty plot, lively characters, and an all-around fun read." With this book, Scottoline delivers a tour de force that is not to be missed.

Customer Reviews:
A good, fast moving novel........2007-06-24
Bennie Rosato has a problem that could curtail her legal career and catapult her into bankruptcy. Several of her clients are having financial problems and are no longer able to retain her or--worse yet--pay her for services already rendered. In order to keep her law office open and pay her staff, she must mortgage her home.
Then a new client with a class action suit approaches her and Bennie has high hopes of unexpected solvency, an opportunity to protect the underdog and the satisfaction of taking on the established pecking order in Philadelphia.
As she begins to hope that she will once again be able to maintain her office, pay her staff and keep her home, she is broadsided by the totally unexpected reappearance of her twin. Alice looks like Bennie, walks like Bennie and even talks like Bennie, however Alice hates Bennie and her success.
Cruelly, Alice tries to kill her dog by throwing a ball out into a busy street knowing Bear will heedlessly chase it. When a jogger saves Bear, Bennie is grateful and he becomes a new friend. Then, as she begins to trust him, Bennie learns that he could be a killer.
This is the first Lisa Scottoline book I have read but it certainly won't be the last. The story was fast moving, the characters were well developed and her setting in Philadelphia was refreshing.
Troubles for Bennie.......2007-02-04
Bennie Rosato has more troubles than she can handle. Her law firm is in bad financial shape and it appears that her twin Alice is back in town and causing no end of problems. Because of her financial predicament, she decides to take on a class-action lawsuit, although she's never had any experience doing so. Bennie is one of my favorite Lisa Scottoline heroines and the feisty female lawyer does not disappoint in this book. Of course it doesn't hurt that she has an interesting set of supporting characters, including a new love interest. You can count on a good read and interesting courtroom action in Scottoline's books.
Audio makes this book the best in entertainment!.......2006-04-23
I didn't read this book but followed along on the unabridged Audio Cassette. I really enjoyed it! The actress reading was absolutely amazing! It was laugh out loud fun! The reader does every kind of accent, from wispy receptionist to Sexy Frenchman to Hottie David Holland. So do yourself a favor and listen to this terrific book, it is a great experience.
Excellent!!.......2006-03-20
This is a really fun novel to read. The conversations are witty. The characters are loveable. The plot is unpredictable and exciting.
My only complaint is that the murderer's motive is too weak and it doesn't really make sense that the person wants to kill Bennie. Other than that this novel is great. Highly recommended!
Evil twins, Navy Seals, and charming old French guys.......2005-11-18
Bennie Rosato is a woman lawyer living on the edge - the edge of bankruptcy, that is. She has just won an important case that she and her all-female firm have put a lot of time on when her client tells her he can't pay. So she's desperate enough to accept a client with a class-action lawsuit even though they've never handled that kind of litigation. To complicate matters, it seems that her evil identical twin, Alice, is back in town and impersonating her... making her look like an alcoholic in front of a group of judges, stealing jewelry, and trying to kill her dog. But the situation gets even worse when someone dies, and Bennie has to wonder if Alice has her sights set on killing her next.
With a cast of interesting and eclectic characters worthy of any TV drama, this is certainly an entertaining book. But because the characters are also very likeable people, you can't help but get drawn into the story and share their concerns. I was a bit amused by the regular descriptions of the attire worn by nearly everyone, but it didn't detract that much. Overall, it's not timeless literature, but it was still a lot of fun to read.

non vrai.......2007-07-31
We've all seen designer knock-offs, those bits and pieces spread out on blankets on NYC sidewalks, around Paris Metro stops, in the entrances to Covent Garden alleyways, on Florentine bridges. The initials in Calvin Klein are a bit off, there's an extra n in Chanel or the stitching is wrong, the fabric flimsy.
OK. This novel. Well, the stitching is wrong and the fabric is dreck. This is my first Francome novel. It will also be my last.
Wandering the mystery sections in bookstores, I've always thought it was a bit fishy that another horse series comes so close in the alphabet to Dick Francis. Well, having read all of Francis and one of Francome, I must hand it to the latter - he knows how to make hay of a coincidence and a two-word title. If Francis's books were paintings, this would be like looking at a Xeroxed copy. The shapes are the same, but the detail is gone and the colors are off.
But that's not the worst thing. The estate of the late Josephine Tey has grounds for protest here, as Francome produces a clumsy re-make of the timeless favorite, Brat Farrar. This isn't just A missing heir story; it's THAT missing heir story, right down to climbing down sinkholes after the evidence and Westover changed merely to Westport. Even the sleazy almost-family-member coach is virtually identical.
If this were an attempt at a Tey tribute, it would be merely sad. As it stands, however, it's guaranteed a spot on the Ponte Vecchio.

Average at best.......2007-02-26
I really debated between 2 and 3 stars, but decided to be generous. Because I love books by James Patterson, a friend of mine loaned this book to me. I am very glad I did not actually pay money for it! It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't good either. The main plot was all right, but the book could have used some very serious editing; it just went on and on and on. I decided to give this 3 stars because of the basic story and the intrigue was there, but if the book would have been about 150 pages shorter, it would have been much better.
While reading, I often looked to see how many pages I had yet to go (never a good sign) and often found myself putting the book down to clean out the dishwasher and do laundry (again, never a good sign). With Patterson, I want to read until finished. This one I debated long and hard about even continuing.
The "ears" have it.......2006-06-13
After a family celebration and a night of making love, architect Charlotte Gray rolls over to sleep as husband Dan takes out the garbage, only to not return. When she calls the police, the FBI shows up and informs her that her husband is an international terrorist Danny O'Toole, a master of disguises who is wanted in connection with several bombings and arms deals in Europe. Suddenly, Charlotte's life as she knows it is a complete fabrication. After intense questioning and scrutiny, she relocates to Florida to get away from Iowa winters and memories of Dan.
After 18 months in sunny Florida, the FBI is once again at her door asking for her help in nabbing Dan, who they erroneously reported killed months earlier. Charlotte cannot identify Dan's voice in a recording, and soon agent John Hunsaker is pursuing her romantically. When John is incapacitated at a nightclub, someone moves in and kidnaps Charlotte. Richard Villier, advises her that he is a French agent and that he was asked to take into protective custody to preclude the Armagh Army (a violent faction of the IRA with intentions of bombing the Kennedy Space Center) from kidnapping her. What she does not realize is that Richard is actually Dan, and he is not the monster she has been led to believe, and realizes that she has never really gotten over him.
With the Armagh Army, the FBI, and assorted bad guys moving in, Charlotte and Dan race against the clock to insure that the Armagh Army is not successful in its mission. Charlotte does not know who is wearing a white hat, and who is wearing black. This is a fast-paced thriller with just the right amount of sizzle that at times is predictable, but pulls the rug out from the reader in the end.
How many stars does deserve this book?.......2005-05-10
1) It's a sheer different spies' story written in this book.
2) You won't know what will happen in the next page until JC want you to know.
3) The book never goes out of the main story or have difficult explanations that nobody understand.
4) You won't be able to put the book down no matter what you have to do instead of reading.
5) It makes you think of what other people think about the US homeland security.
6) It has many turns, but is an easy reading and you won't get lost in the plot.
Two and a half stars: Predictable!.......2004-12-31
This is my first book from Ms. Cresswell. Due to great reviews I expected something original and interesting. This is actually a government suspense. Nevertheless I found it totally predictable and very slow moving.
Good Book.......2004-03-10
This is my first book by this author. I was pleasantly surprised. What a different take on a contemporary romance novel! How would you feel if the man you married and thought you were in love with disappeared one night while taking out the garbage? Would you believe he abandoned you, or was he hurt, kidnapped, etc.? What if, after worrying and thinking the worst, you find out you were actually married to an international terrorist? This is the basic premise of this book. Charlotte Gray's world gets turned upside down when first her husband disappears, and then to make matters worse, she finds out he is a terrorist. Finally, when Charlotte thinks things can't possibly get any worse, she is kidnapped because of her husband. I truly liked the main heroine Charlotte Gray. I found her a very believable and likeable character. I also liked the fact that she was a fighter. In this book Charlotte has to come to terms with her husband and his life, and how to not only learn to trust again but learn to love again. I would highly recommend this book.
Book Description
Three murders were too many for Ed Hunter. Not even a dazzling redhead from the carnival's girl show could keep Ed altogether happy--not with a murderer running loose. Then Ed found it was up to him and his Uncle Am to find the killer among the freaks and strippers of the carnival--a killer who chose his victims according to size!
Ed and his Uncle Am are back, working in a travelling carnival through the Midwest. Bodies, though smallish in stature, keep piling up, and Ed finds himself head over heels in love. Fascinating for the insights into carnival life that this book provides.

Lateral Logic Puzzle.......2005-09-20
In a lateral logic puzzle, the author gives you a set of seemingly incongruous facts forming a "fair play" mystery. If you can fit the facts together correctly, you can solve the mystery.
"Dead Ringer" is a lateral logic puzzle. All the pertinent facts are there. You just have to recognize which ones are relevant and the solution is obvious. At least it's obvious after Ed and Am Hunter explain how the facts fit together.
A naked midget is found stabbed to death at the carnival. Later a chimpanzee drowns, and finally a child dies. Through the first two deaths, Ed and Am Hunter mind their own business. The third death stirs them to action, and the mystery is quickly solved. They arrive at the solution independently, but Am gets there a little quicker than Ed.
It's not great detective fiction, but it will give the reader an insight into life in the fifties--inside and outside a carnival. Ed and Am form a congenial team. Not quite on a par with Archie Goodwin and Nero Wolfe, but likeable nonetheless.

Never mind that she's never handled anything like this before. Having won nearly every civil and criminal case she's ever tried, the brillant and unconventional Bennie has the guts, and she'll do what it takes to succeed. Even if that means wearing pantyhose and putting herself on a curse diet." "Then her wallet goes missing. And Bennie's life goes crazy." "It's not just that one of her associates has dyed her hair pink. Or that another's old-world Italian mother gives Bennie the evil eye. But someone posing as the outspoken, blue-eyed, blond attorney is wreaking havoc around town, apparently determined to destroy everything Bennie loves. Only one person can pull off this double deception - Bennie's identical twin sister, Alice Connelly. But as far as Bennie knows, Alice left Philly long ago and never looked back." When events escalate into murder, the maverick lawyer realizes that the stakes are far greater then she feared. But Bennie Rosato refuses to be anyone's victim. To find the killer, she'll plunge headfirst into a life-and-death investigation that will bring her face-to-face with evil darker yet more familiar than anything before
