Book Description
The Hatfield-McCoy feud, the entertaining subject of comic strips, popular songs, movies, and television, has long been a part of American folklore and legend. Ironically, the extraordinary endurance of the myth that has grown up around the Hatfields and McCoys has obscured the consideration of the feud as a serious historical event. In this study, Altina Waller tells the real story of the Hatfields and McCoys and the Tug Valley of West Virginia and Kentucky, placing the feud in the context of community and regional change in the era of industrialization.
Waller argues that the legendary feud was not an outgrowth of an inherently violent mountain culture but rather one manifestation of a contest for social and economic control between local people and outside industrial capitaliststhe Hatfields were defending community autonomy while the McCoys were allied with the forces of industrial capitalism. Profiling the colorful feudists "Devil Anse" Hatfield, "Old Ranel" McCoy, "Bad" Frank Phillips, and the ill-fated lovers Roseanna McCoy and Johnse Hatfield, Waller illustrates how Appalachians both shaped and responded to the new economic and social order.
Customer Reviews:
Great Research of the FEUD.......2004-09-07
This book happens to be one of the only studies that Dr. Coleman Hatfield recommended at one of the talks I attended. Dr. Hatfield is the great-grandson of Devil Anse and is quite a history scholar in his own right -- and the author of "THE TALE OF THE DEVIL" the first and only biography of Devil Anse Hatfield.
Waller has meticulously studied the subject matter, and it's worth reading. And American tragedy.
Useful, but flawed in several important aspects . . ........2002-09-21
Dr. Waller attempts to get past the "traditional accounts", usually assembled from the newspaper and popular accounts of the time, but falls into one error which confounds the rest of her presentation: she found a great deal of information for the Hatfield family and for the West Virginia side of the river, but not as much for the Kentucky side and she generalized about the second using what she learned from the first. While the book was exceptionally well-researched, some information was overlooked or missed. Professor Waller unfortunately accepts the claim that the Tug Valley was a Confederate stronghold. However, only the West Virginia side of the river was strongly Confederate in its sympathies. The Kentucky side of the river contained a large number of Union veterans (possibly as many as a hundred or more men from this area joined the Federal army), and, in fact, in Pike County the area bordering the river was the most loyal in the entire county (post-war voting records reveal the largest percentages of Republican voters in the two precincts which were part of the Tug Valley). Waller's initial conclusions lead her to dismiss the Civil War connections of the feud. She was apparently unaware of the high degree of Unionism in the region and how it may have contributed to what could have been a continuation of the 1861-1865 warfare on the border, despite the alleged thirteen- and five-year respites. While it is well-known that Hatfield and his kin were Confederate veterans (though there is a justifiable dispute as to whether Devil Anse was actually a member of the Logan Wildcats), and it is also known that many of the McCoys had served in gray with the Hatfields, in the later phases of the feud (aptly identified by Dr. Waller) the participation of several former Union veterans or their sons in the fighting against the Hatfields indicates a significant Civil War connection. The evidence that the feuding was a carryover from the war is substantial and cannot be dismissed.
Hatfields and McCoys.......2002-07-21
It has long been assumed that the famous feud between the Hatfields and McCoys in the 1880's was a family affair between two clans of primitive hillbillies. In Feud: Hatfields, McCoys, and Social Change in Appalachia, 1860-1900, Altina Waller argues that this view is nothing less than folklore, and the historical reality of the feud has been all but lost. Her work successfully explodes the myths that have surrounded the feuding Hatfields and McCoys.
In her introduction, Professor Waller discusses the previous interpretations of the feud. The first states that, "the feud and the culture from which it emerged were anachronisms in modern society" and "they represented a primitive way of life which had somehow been preserved in much the same way that prehistoric fossils are preserved." The second school of thought suggests that the feud was a result of the transformation that was occurring in the region due to the "onslaught of industrialization." Waller rejects both of these interpretations because of three aspects of the feud that she has identified as violence, family, and timing. Waller has concluded after much research that "in the 1870s and 1880s, the Tug Valley may have been boisterous and rowdy, but it was far from dangerous" and that "something unusual was happening eithin this particular community which drove a few individuals and families to resort to extreme measures." And Waller discounts the family explanation because " supportersof the Hatfields and of the Mccoys consisted of numerous individuals unrelated to those families; in fact, more than half of each group were unrelated to the feud leaders. More puzzling, there were McCoys on the Hatfield side and Hatfields on the McCoy side." Waller rejects also that the feud was caused by the Civil War. She dates the feud from 1878-1900, and identifies two phases with a five year interim. Waller offers that the feud must be examined internally and also in the light of regional and national trends.
The Tug Valley in the years following the Civil War underwent profound changes. Due to rapid growth in population and the finite agricultural resources available in the Valley, a sort of greedy desperation began to emerge in the character of some inhabitants of the Tug Valley. Also at this time outside interest in the vast resources of the Appalachias was taking the form of big money men and local agents purchasing huge tracts of land in order to exploit the mountains for their coal and timber. Gradually the mountaineer was transformed from an inependent farmer to an impoverished wage laborer. attempting to buck this trend is none other than Devil Anse Hatfield. Through hard work and some crafty legal maneuvers, Anse becomes proprieter of a sizable timber busines. And in the process incurs the wrath of Old Ranel McCoy and Perry Cline. Old Ranel through his own foolishness has not prospered, and Anse has bested Cline in a court action and removed him from his lands, which are then awarded to Anse. This is what Professor Waller has discovered to be the crux of the feud--economic power and control and its resultant societal implications. Anse has climbed the ladder while others have watched, and they are jealous.
These truths were initially lost because of the sensational handling of the feud by the newspapers of the day. Altina Waller has been successful in separating the myths from the reality. She states in conclusion that, "the feudists were struggling with the same historical forces of transformation that had been changing Americal since before the American Revolution." This is the larger picture.
Well-researched and written account of the famous feud along.......1998-05-28
Waller has a done a spectacular job of recreating this now infamous event, seperating fact from myth and rebutting many of the stereotypes that were perpetrated about the feud by the Northern press that glamorized it. As a native of Pike County, Kentucky and a distant relative of many involved in this feud, I found the text most informative. It is also accesible to anyone who is not from Appalachia or who is not versed in its history.

Save your money.......2006-07-17
I bought this book to prepare for the NBCOT exam, and found it to be pretty much useless. The questions are not formatted or in anyway similar to those on the exam, and the answers in the back are very brief, one or two sentances, and don't offer much clarification or explanation regarding correct or incorrect answers. I found that most of the book focuses on terminology or basic concepts; not at all as in depth or as situational as the real exam.
This book was a disappointment.......2006-03-15
Greetings,
Let me start out by saying that I passed the certification test on my first try with a very high score.
Having said that, unforunately this book simply does not prepare you for the NBCOT certification exam. I would recommend this only as a add-on to other material and others books, specifically the one I liked was by Caryn Johnson "The Occupational Therapy Examination Review Guide".
As far as this book goes:
- The majority of the questions are *not even close* to the same format as you will encounter on the certification test. On the NBCOT test, ALL of the questions are based on clinical reasoning. This book has many questions like "Where on the body would you find the acromion process?" and way too few questions that resemble the real deal.
- The explanation of the correct answer is somewhat limited.
- For a few of their questions, I honestly thought their explanation for the 'correct' answer was actually incorrect!
- The wrong choices from their sample questions are barely discussed. In the book by Caryn Johnson, they explain every choice, why one answer is correct and why the other choices are incorrect.
- They do not reference the source material from where their explanation came from. In the Caryn Johnson book, it would list a detailed answer, then the book AND the chapter from which this question was formulated. That was a huge help because I would flip open my textbook and immediately read up on that subject.
- This book did come with a voucher to take an online, timed test. But that online test did not have ANY explanation of the answers, right or wrong.
This book isn't horrible. It will get you thinking in the test-taking frame of mind and it will provide you some helpful advice. As an add-on book to other stuff, it will help you. However, I would recommend not letting this book be your only source.
Good luck.

According to Per Wahloo, the ten books he wrote with his wife, Maj Sjowall, about Inspector Martin Beck were intended to be a left-wing assault on the sacred cows of Swedish society. They are also, however, entertaining tales of mystery that allow non-Swedes to slip under the skin of another culture while having a frighteningly good time. In this first book of the series, the body of a young woman is discovered as a dredger digs a canal. There seems to be little chance of Beck identifying the woman, let alone discovering who killed her. But by combining time-honored methods of police procedure with a few local twists, Beck manages to do just that.
Book Description
On a July afternoon, the body of a young woman is dredged from Sweden's beautiful Lake Vattern. Three months later, all that Police Inspector Martin Beck knows is that her name is Roseanna, that she came from Lincoln, Nebraska, and that she could have been strangled by any one of eighty-five people. With its authentically rendered settings and vividly realized characters, and its command over the intricately woven details of police detection,
Roseanna is a masterpiece of suspense and sadness.

Forerunners of Henning Mankell.......2007-08-22
For those who have read all of Commisar Wallender's cases there are two directions to go in. One is forward, to Icelandic author Arnaldur Indridasen, another is backward in time to the mysteries of Sjöwall and Wahlöö. both paths should be taken! S & W write clearly in a psycho-sociological vein that must (as he admits) have influenced Mankell. In S & W there is less introspection on the part of Inspector Beck, and no parallel description (until the end) of the mentality of the criminal. But like Mankell, the criminal paints a clear psychological picture of why he acted as he did. I'm now reading my second S & W, have bought four.
This review is based on the Norwegian translation of Roseanna.
"Well, intuition isn't much help in police work.......2007-01-05
facts are what we need." Crane Wilbur
Facts are few and far between for Detective Inspector Martin Beck in "Roseanna". A girl's body is found by a dredger in a lock near Sweden's Lake Vattern. The body is naked and there are no clues as to her identity and the reasons for her death. Martin Beck is called up from Stockholm to assist the local authorities in their investigation. Through a process of time-consuming grunt work and dogged determination Beck and his colleagues try first to find the pieces to this jigsaw puzzle of a mystery. They first have to identify the dead girl. Next they have to identify the crime scene (one of a number of passenger ferries). Finally the have to identify a possible suspect out of more than eighty potential killers.
The pace of the book tracks the pace of the investigation. In the first few months of the case little progress is made. However, this affords the readers the opportunity to get a glimpse of Beck and his colleague's character and personalities as they go about the daily grind of their police work. The pace quickens and the excitement mounts as the jigsaw puzzle pieces begin to fall into place.
Roseanna was the first in a series of ten Martin Beck mysteries written by the Swedish, husband and wife team of Per Wahloo and Maj Sjowall. The plot and structure of the four Beck mysteries I've read to date do not deviate from the standard format found in any well-written police procedural. However, what sets the Beck mysteries apart is their location and character development. Naturally enough, each book is a small window into Swedish life and culture in the 1960s and 1970s when the books were written. Further, as the series develops the character of Beck and his colleagues evolve and the reader slowly obtains a real feel for Beck and his fellow police officers.
Roseanna was not the best of the Beck books I've read but it was good enough that I stayed up a bit later than I should in order to finish it. Even thought this may not be the best of the bunch I do suggest that any reader new to the series start with Roseanna in order to appreciate the evolution of Beck and his family and fellow officers.
If you like police procedurals with a bit of an exotic flair you should enjoy the Martin Beck stories. They rank alongside Boris Akunin's Erast Fandorin series set in Russia and Georges Simenon's Maigret stories set in France as enjoyable, well-written stories set on distant shores. Recommended. L. Fleisig
Solid Beginning to This Swedish Series.......2005-02-21
I've long intended to check out the 10-book Martin Beck series by Swedish husband/wife team Per Wahloo and Maj Sjowall, and the 40th anniversary of this first book in the series seems like a good excuse. For some reason, some readers seem to think the book takes place in the '70s or late '60s, but it was written in 1963-4, published in Sweden in 1965, and appeared in English in 1967. The story begins with the discovery of a woman's corpse in Lake Vattern in central Sweden, roughly equidistant from Stockholm, Copenhagen, and Oslo. The police from the nearby town of Motala start investigating and when it's established that the woman was strangled, the homicide experts from Stockholm are called in.
Enter Martin Beck, a chain-smoking homicide detective roughly in his late 30s. Beck is a classic example of the workaholic policeman that one can find in crime fiction and film the world over. He barely speaks to his wife and children, and prefers long hard hours at the office to a home life that offers him nothing. It's such a bleak portrait that the reader is hard-pressed to imagine Beck's marriage (or lungs) surviving the series. The story is a very straightforward, and almost dry procedural account of the case. The first problem the team encounters is in identifying the victim, as she doesn't match any missing persons reports and as part of the route for touring the Gota canal system, Lake Vattern is a high-traffic tourist area, with lots of tour boats coming through. The second hurdle is that once she is identified, months have passed, and tracking down everyone who was on her tour cruise and taking statements proves very difficult. Finally, even once a suspect is identified, there's no physical evidence or eyewitness, so Beck and his laconic team must somehow force the murderer into revealing himself in another way.
As a procedural, this is a very strong book, illustrating all the police methodology available at the time. It also does a good job of showing how important it is for the detective to form a psychological portrait of the victim, a concept that was not particularly widespread forty years ago. The combination of procedure and psychology make for a decent crime novel, although the bone dry prose isn't going to enthrall anyone. The authors famously said that their books were intended to challenge conventional Swedish morality, and without revealing anything, the murder and motive in this book are clearly built around this premise. A solid beginning to a promising series.
This book was made into a film twice in Sweden, once in 1967, and again in 1993. Sadly neither of these appear to be available in English in any format.
Martin Beck Arrives.......2004-07-19
"Roseanna" introduces Martin Beck, an overworked but brilliant Swedish policeman. When the body of a young woman is found in a nearby lake, Beck is called in to assist. The case proves frustrating, and months pass before any progress is made. Fortunately, Beck is persistent and sticks with the case, even as it begins to haunt his life. Originally released in 1967, the plot doesn't rely on high-tech police techniques - just good old-fashioned story-telling.
Married authors Maj Sjowall and Per Wahloo crafted this fine novel, as well as subsequent entries in the Martin Beck series. The style of writing is sometimes dry and always factual, which adds a great deal of realism to the story. At times, the translation is somewhat awkward, particularly in the dialogue, but it doesn't detract much from the overall impact of the book. Vintage Crime/ Black Lizard has re-released the series, and as always they've done a beautiful job. Recommended for fans of police/detective stories - I intend to read more entries in the series.
Discover Martin Beck for yourself........2004-03-23
Like Freeling or Simenon, the Sjowall/Wahloo novels are excellent more for the excuse the mystery provides for an examination of everyday life, than they are for the excitement or horror of the crime itself. In the case of Martin Beck, he explores the frustrations and pleasures of Swedish life while solving his mysteries.
This is not my favorite in the series (so far, that would be _The Man Who Went Up in Smoke_), but it's not a bad place to begin. It is hurt a bit by being a little dated by some of the concerns about Roseanna herself-- she is a great view of how many saw the hippies at the time. However, the book itself is not dated and this is not an issue that should dissuade someone from reading it.

Terrible review.......2005-02-16
This book only review's the right answer on the questions. It does not go indepth on why an answer is right OR wrong. Some of the questions have you wondering, where did I learn some of this stuff from? The material in this book, is VERY different from the study material in other books I have used. It is very hard to review of this book, and non-user friendly.
An okay review book.......2002-03-03
Some of the questions are poorly written and explanations for answers are often very brief. The diskette uses the same questions as the book, so I didn't find it very helpful. I wish the diskette would have had at least some (if not all) new questions.
The book does use many domain style questions (like the NBCOT exam). I wouldn't recommend this book to be the only book you use to prepare for the exam, but it is somewhat useful.
OT exam review book.......2001-06-03
I have the earlier edition of this book, and bought this edition to get new questions. Sadly to say, there were only a few new questions. I am quite disappointed.
OTR who took the March 2000 NBCOT exam.......2000-08-28
I used this book as a study guide to practice my timing by answering 200 question at a time within the 4 hour period given for the NBCOT exam. I found that the questions did not even come close to what was on the certification exam, but it was helpful because it looks at all aspects of therapy. My advice would be to order the NBCOT study guide because it comes the closest to what you will see on the actual exam. Good Luck.
OTR Exam, yikes!.......2000-04-01
Sladyk's study book was one of the major tools I used to prepare for the OTR exam. Her inclusion of explanations to the answers (both right and wrong) was the most useful feature of the guide, providing the reader with instant feedback and info. A suggestion for future editions would be to include references with the answers so the reader could access additional information. Occasionally there would be an answer that I didn't understand and I REALLY wanted to read more about it, which isn't always an easy (or quick) task when you're not sure where to look first. Also, this study guide does not reflect the recent format change of the NBCOT exam. The exam now asks questions in a more problem-solving/case study style rather than the "reciting facts" edge it apparently used to have (or at least so I had heard). The NBCOT Study Guide (although pricy at $40) was very helpful with enlightening the reader with the new flair of question format. Karen Sladyk has also published (through Slack as well)a box of OT study cards, which are SO GREAT. I owe a friend of mine (Libby) bigtime for giving me these handy cards. Wow. Concise. Granted, they don't go into extreme detail, but Sladyk and her colleagues choose words wisely for the limited space. Don't shove these in the closet when the exam is over. They're too useful! Best of luck for anyone studying for the next OTR exam.

Book Description
La Grange was incorporated in 1879, and La Grange Park in 1892. Both areas were farmland before being developed as residential communities. Today, a large section of La Grange is a National Register Historic District, and this area is dominated by large Victorian and early-twentieth-century homes. In fact, the most striking feature of La Grange and La Grange Park is the well-preserved state of their vintage housing. Both villages have maintained a small-town look and feel that has attracted many families to the area. During World War I, the Marx Brothers, in order to avoid military service, bought a farm just south of the La Grange village limits. A biography of Groucho includes some humorous recollections of life on that farm. La Grange is also lucky enough to be home to three Frank Lloyd Wright houses. Outside of these well-known attributes of La Grange and La Grange Park, the authors also explore the history of the early settlers of the area and show how the residents lived, worked, played, worshiped, and attended school in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Through the use of over 200 vintage photographs from the La Grange Area Historical Society, individual residents, and community organizations, RoseAnna and Robert Mueller offer a glimpse of La Grange's old-fashioned streets that have made La Grange a popular setting for local television commercials and even the odd Hollywood film.

This is a positive message set in the real world - from a person who really did turn adversity into assets. It will give you the nutritional, physical and mental techniques to be the best you can be.
Book Description
In Will of Iron: Principles for Healthy Living, Nielsen tells the riveting story of his near-fatal battle with Crohn's disease. Even though doctors told him he would probably spend the rest of his life in and out of hospitals, Nielsen overcame fear and self-doubt and committed himself to a life of nutrition and fitness. Against tremendous physical odds, he transformed his ravaged body into a paragon of fitness.
Nielsen forged happiness and success out of adversity - from pumping iron in a gritty Flatbush gym and winning the Mr. International Universe title to becoming the host of his own television show.
But Will of Iron is more than an inspiring biography. While plenty of books offer nutritional advice, exercise routines or motivational messages, Nielsen blends all three into a simple, yet powerful recipe that explain exactly why readers should care about health, fitness and lifestyle.
Readers who have never jogged a mile will find themselves determined to get off the couch and enrich all aspects of their lives - relationships, career and self-esteem. Dedicated bodybuilders will find a "clean" path to success without steroids. And all will discover a compelling and inspiring story.

The one book you'll ever need for Total Fitness.......1998-09-02
Great book. I've re-read it many times. Covers all three areas you need for fitness: Motivation, Nutrition and Workouts. Mr Nielsen also has his life priorities in order, and will help you do the same. It's more than just a fitness book. It's a "how to live your life to the fullest" book.

Book Description
The Florence Howe Award for Outstanding Feminist Scholarship, created in 1974, has played a major role in establishing the legitimacy and visibility of feminist inquiry. The early award-winning essays are available in the MLA volume Courage and Tools. This volume presents the seventeen essays that won the award for the years 1990-2004, an era that witnessed a diversification of the objects of feminist study and critical approaches. Essays treat authors ranging from well-known writers such as Jane Austen, Charlotte Brontë, Gwendolyn Brooks, Doris Lessing, and Virginia Woolf to less familiar writers such as the Magreb author Assia Djebar, the Spanish poet Concha Méndez, the Native American writer Zitkala-Sa, and the Palestinian novelists Liana Badr and Sahar Khalifeh. Essayists explore their topics through a multiplicity of perspectives, including race and ethnicity studies, cultural studies, psychoanalysis and film theory, nationhood and nationalism, and discourses of aging. Each award winner has written a short afterword, reflecting on her essay and her critical practice.
The volume includes a foreword by Florence Howe, cofounder of the Feminist Press, and an afterword by Annette Kolodny, an early recipient of the Florence Howe award.
