5 out of 5 stars Legendary and masterpiece in estimation theory.......2004-06-13

Without any hesitation, I consider this book as a masterpiece in the area of statistical signal processing. Kay takes the reader to the journey of estimation theory as if a science teacher takes his students to a field trip. The one special feature of this book is the convergence of thought that reader obtains upon reading the book. Kay lays a fundamental bridge between various estimators using his succinct style for describing the subject.

Few special areas require more attention in this book. For example the coverage of EM methods is very condense and requires more elaboration. Also there is no discussion on the estimation methods using higher order statistics.

Overall I consider this book as the best book I have read ever and I highly recommend this book to those who want to obtain an ever-lasting view on statistical signal processing.

5 out of 5 stars couldn't rate 6... a must !.......2003-08-12

I've had tough courses on statistical signal processing as a post-grade student. I am often confused in front of a problem and turning back to the notes taken in class doesn't help much.
When you read this book all gets bright. I am still wondering how some teachers can be so confusing while such good books do exist...
However don't count on it for in depth mathematical demonstrations, it starts with a practical problem and explains how to model things. Thus it is a bit bottom-up but anyway starting from a good graduate level in signal and stats.
I got this one at the library but already ordered a copy for myself and am planning to get part2 on detection.

5 out of 5 stars A reference for self-directed study.......2003-06-09

This text is very good for those who start doing research in statistical signal processing. A lot of explanations, technical terms are well presented and consistent, plus a number of examples that help you to learn about different statistical signal processing concepts and algorithms. Research students can be beneficial alot from this text.

5 out of 5 stars The book has depth and is well written.......2003-02-08

This is one of the best references on statistical signal processing. The topic is not of simple matter, but the author presents the materials clearly together with great examples. The book is reader-friendly and is relatively error-free. I have bought several copies for my PhD students at Georgia Tech.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book in Estimation Theory.......2002-03-04

This book was asigned to me for a graduate course in Statistical Signal Estimation. The book was very useful and easy to read. It was well written and had helpful examples. I recommend this book for any one who wants to learn about Estimation Theory.

5 out of 5 stars Simply good..!.......2007-06-27

Well..would say a life time reference book for me...bt as chapters progress it assumes you have the other twin too .. (estimation theory)..better invite them to your shelf together to get a feel ..!
But this costly book comes with a worst-ever-binding..which appears to be firm from outside...Initially I thought it was only me who suffered from this ..but it seems many has expressed the same view...papers coming out day-by-day

2 out of 5 stars "Textbook Binding" is rather poor.......2007-03-10

After buying a book for about $80 I expect to get value for my money. I was extremely disappointed to note that just one week after using the textbook (and solving exactly one homework assignment of 4 problems) the pages began to come out. I have seen other friends who bought the book have a similar problem. The contents of the book deserve 4 stars. But the lousy binding pulls down its rating to 2 stars.

3 out of 5 stars low quality paper .......2006-10-17

For a $90+ book the quality of paper is low and binding very bad. On the very day I got the book from Amazon, I had papers coming out unstuck. The paper used is not archival quality, typically expected for such high priced books. I am very disappointed. I have no doubts the text material is great and will be valid for a long time but I am sure the paper will not last even a few months.

5 out of 5 stars If you want to learn detection theory get this book........2001-04-12

This book presents the fundamental ideas in detection theory (Hypothesis testing for you math types) in a very accessible way. It was one of the few textbooks I could read without feeling like I should be taking a class to go along with it. First the book starts off with a short chapter explaining what detection theory is. This chapter is so well written and illustrated that I've used it to explain to my friends what it is I do at work. This type of very good introduction is repeated at the start of each chapter. But I would have to say the strength of the book is in the examples. All the main ideas are demonstrated by examples that have been worked out in detail. There are several of these worked out examples per chapter and they range form simple, to the kinds of problems you may face in real life. I keep this book on my desk at work, and on more than on occasion I looked liked a genius by using this book and it's examples to solve a problem in minuets that looked like it would take hours (or days).

5 out of 5 stars The best textbook in Estimation Theory.......1999-11-19

Steven Kay has done a superb job. His coverage of different aspects of estimation theory make this book an excellent reference for the working engineer, as well as a great college textbook. All the topics are well covered, there are meaningful examples that apply the theory to different aspects of signal processing, and the problem sets are very useful. Also, the addition of small appendixes to the end of some chapters is very unique. They usually contain additional material to clarify a method presented in the chapter or discuss some mathematical result. A book that can balance theory with practical applications is not easy to find, especially in a difficult area like statistical signal processing. This is the ultimate guide to estimation theory and its applications.

5 out of 5 stars A must-have.......2007-05-19

If you are looking for a well-organized, comprehensive, detailed book in the subject of detection and estimation, this is the book you must have. The author explains every subject very clearly, elaborates on important points, and, most importantly, supports the theoretical basis with many useful examples. It seems that Prof. Van Trees used his experience as a professor teaching this subject very effectively. In the book, there is nothing unclear, nothing too complicated to understand.

5 out of 5 stars Old is GOLD! Remarkable collection of topics and problems..........2006-04-05

Van Trees, Part I (together with Wozencraft/Jacobs' Principles of Communication Engineering, and Gallager's Information Theory) is a must read to establish a solid background in detection/estimation theory and form connections to applications such as communications engineering and information theory.

Although most recent graduate education uses Kay's book (which is also a remarkable book), there are still a lot of details in which Van Trees, Part I excels. Especially, the exercise problems are actually lectures by themselves, and first time reader is encouraged at least to look at selected problems listed at the end of the book. Note that there is a solution manual floating around for these selected problems.

A good comparison between Kay and Van Trees, and their complementary nature, can be established how they treat the description of the Cramer-Rao bound, Kay emphasizes the recent developments and derivations (mostly of arithmetic and bookkeeping nature, results from post 1968 papers), whereas Van Trees goes leaps and bounds and discusses other bounds which apply when Cramer-Rao does not. I appreciate having both books as a result.

It is interesting to note that after almost 20 years using Van Trees in a couple of courses, I can still navigate my way through the book with ease since it well organized and methodical.

RECOMMENDATION: BEST BUY.
But dont stop here, and buy Wozencraft/Jacobs and Gallager as well.

5 out of 5 stars A Classic Text.......2002-05-23

I have just taken this course from Dr. Van Trees at GMU. Est&Det organized many concepts taught in other graduate engineering courses into a coherent philosophy. The result is not only a rich understanding of estimation and detection, but also random processes, Wiener filtering, Kalman filtering, radar and communications theory etc.

The course was taught directly from the text with little outside material. Very little has become obsolete in the 30+ years since it was written.

The strong positives of this book are the philosophical organization, clear concise writing, and incredibly well conceived homework problems.

The only negative of the book is that there are many proofs done in great detail. This provides the necessary foundation for the material, but also makes it easy for the student to lose track of the bigger picture.

Dr. Van Trees tends to try to drive home the higher level concepts while glossing over many of the details when he is lecturing. The exercise problems then force the student to give the necessary attention to pertinent details. In my opinion, this is an excellent approach to teaching the material.

Overall, this course was as good as any I've every taken. The text is as important and useful as any other I have.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for anyone serious about biomechanics.......2006-11-23

This book is a must have for biomechanics Graduate students. It looks at biomechanics from an engineering standpoint and technological standpoint, not just a math/physics standpoint. It is much cheaper (used) and just as good as the third edition. The only meaningful thing the third edition does better is describe filters (butterworth, spline, etc.). Some other parts of this book could be better explained, but I like the shortness of it overall. It also has Demster's anthropometric data in it that is the most commonly used for inverse dynamic solutions in biomechanics. Overall a great book and I'd recommend it to any advanced biomechanics student, even over the third edition all things considered.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Book on Advanced Detection Theory.......2003-09-24

As far as I am concerned this is simply the best book for advanced detection theory. Notice the word "advanced", this book is not for the beginner. It is an updated version of Whalen's first edition, which I have kept close at hand for most of my career. Whereas most texts available are weak on the statistical analysis of signals, this book is strong. I would be surprised if anyone who considered himself an expert on detection theory did not have a copy. If it has a weakness it is in showing the direct connections to applications.

5 out of 5 stars An Advanced Book on Detection Theory.......2003-03-26

This is perhaps the best book available for advanced detection theory. The probabalistic underpinnings are discussed at length. A lot of the other reviews complain about the mathematical difficulty of this text; however, it is an advanced text. Not all texts are required to be accessible to beginners in the subject. If you want to become an expert in detection theory, this is the next step after your introductory course(s). To really get there, you need to have experience in the applications as well.

If you don't have some background in detection theory or at least hypothesis testing, then in my estimation this is probably not the book for you. On the other hand if the myriad texts available are beginning to appear to be a little bit weak on the probability/statistics analysis of signals, then this is the book for you.

1 out of 5 stars Worst textbook I ever had.......2002-01-03

This book manages to describe even straight-forward concepts in a way that is simply incomprehensible. If you are learning the material, you often have to read a paragraph many times to make any sense out of it. And let's not blame it on the concepts, what it comes down to is confusing presentation and terrible use of English language.
I can't believe it has second edition.

1 out of 5 stars Good for reference, not for learning.......2000-10-13

This book is adequate for reference, but if you plan on learning anything, this is not the book for you. Typos and the overuse of the same symbols to mean everything create an unfriendly environment for the reader. The book goes into unnecessary derivations and presents the material in a backward order that confuses the reader. In summary: Let H0 be the author's intended message to the reader. Let N be the organization and writing style of the book. Let D0 be the reader's proper interpretation of the author's message. The reader's interpretation is then I = H0+N. Then P(D0|I) <0.25

1 out of 5 stars I would give it zero stars if that was an option.......2000-09-13

This book is written with so much hand-waving that a reader attempting to learn the subject must spend all of their time trying to figure out what the mathematics are that lead to the GOD given answers that Robby N. McDontKnow supplies us with. That last statement may have been a little harsh, but the missing mathematics combined with the frequent typos of the text provide for unequal frustration for any student attempting to learn this topic.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Reference.......2006-07-13

Criminal Investigation: The Art and Science is an excellent reference book for overall fundamental investigative techniques and specific criminal investigation techniques for specific crimes. I frequently cite the text in the development of law enforcement courses (basic and in-service. The information in the text is current and accurate, which is typically uncommon, as most other texts on criminal investigation simply update a book's cover and neglect the content. I would highly recommend this book as a comprehensive reference book for new and experienced officers.

5 out of 5 stars Investigating: what is it?.......2006-03-09

Criminal investigation is a very poplular subject these days with all of the CSI's and Law an Orders, but what about the facts, what is real? This book is the textbook for my Principles of Criminal Investigations class, part of my Investigatvie Services major in Criminal Justice. It very acuratly illistrates what criminal investigation is about, it is very much about the factual part of invetigations. Also it is not just about investigating the scene of a crime but its very vividly describes crimes and criminals as well as other aspects of the investigation like the psychology and methods invovled in ivertviewing.
This is a must have for any futre investigator.

1 out of 5 stars Filled with dry, common-sense dribble..........2005-06-16

I can't believe I'm taking an entire class to cover this material. Much of it is common sense, and what's not...is on an elementary level. The book is dry, & I've read 9 chapters in just over a week. It's seriously lacking!

Furthermore, I would have kept my review to myself...except for one thing...the blatant plagiarism from the author! If you read the section on Satellite Assisted Surveillance (GPS) on pages 161-163 and compare it to the original author's (Willing, R., USA Today), you'll see a scary example of what I mean. Lyman cites Willing, but that hardly justifies using ALL of Willing's data & merely changing a few "ands" and "buts." This book is full of other peoples' work...chopped up & slapped together!

It's apparent to me that this author passes other's research and work off as his own. What a joke!

5 out of 5 stars A ood framework for law enforcement officers to build upon........2000-07-11

This general textbook is written in a well-organized manner. It presents the common topics associated with criminal investigations: documentation, report writing, suspect identification and methods used for crime scene surveys. The author makes use of recent court decisions during the presentation of his topics. The chapters are logically placed so that it is easy to see how an investigation would take place. There are several illustrations and drawings, which help the reader identify the topic being discussed. This edition is written in easy to read and comprehend sections. Technical words are explained in detail.

The basics of criminal investigation are covered within the textbook - advanced topics such as criminal interrogation and procedures are briefly discussed but they are not the main focus of this book. This textbook provides an excellent foundation for the criminal justice student who is planning a career in law enforcement.

Book Description

2004 RSNA Bestseller!

Early detection is our most effective means for reducing the number of unnecessary deaths caused by breast cancer; however, the lack of skilled mammographic readings, especially in early stage breast cancer, makes this a less effective tool than it could be. In this book, one of the world's most renowned mammographers shares his decades of experience in the analysis and interpretation of mammographic images.

With Dr. Tabar's clear procedures and expert guidance, you will learn to discern the most subtle of pathologic changes to ensure that patients receive optimal and timely treatment. You will also improve your ability to recognize the full range of normal anatomic variability, avoiding unnecessary additional imaging and interventional procedures.

This book contains more than 1,600 high-definition images, many in full-color, to demonstrate anatomic structures, variations in normal tissue, and difficult-to-identify abnormalities. You will also appreciate clear photographs of pathologic specimens, including subgross 3-D, and large, thin-section histologic sections, correlated with mammographic images.

The result of more than two decades of intensive clinical experience, this is the ultimate mammographic atlas for developing expert interpretive skills. No radiologist or breast imager should be without this highly instructive professional reference.

5 out of 5 stars Must-have reference.......2005-08-16

I just got back from the course taught by Dr. Tabar and it was phenomenal! If you can't attend his course, then you must have this book. It covers all the material in the course in a clear and concise manner using almost 1600 images. This would also be a great reference for pathologists and surgeons who perform breast surgery, and techs interested in why they do what they do would find this text a great resource. I will use it as an adjunct learning tool after attending the seminar - I would recommend that buyers of this text do the same. Find the time to go to the seminar and then get the book - and good luck in your practice!

5 out of 5 stars A fantastic unique book.......2005-01-16

This book is really fantastic.
The reader has the pleasant sensation to go through the book like he is attending a course of the Author, step by step, with no rush, having really the time to understand every concept of what he is reading.
Even pathological images were handy for me, because i was given the tools to understand them.
The style of the book is very particular as well, because the method is to teach you to understand what you see, explaining accurately what happened to that patient so that you see that image on the mammogram. I think this method is absolutely brilliant.
Furthermore the book is full of high-quality images and the text is not redundant and tiring, but it is focused to allow you to understand the mammograms.
I think every breast radiologist should have this book!

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Radar Reference Book.......2002-01-10

The day after I bought this book, I made a mistake telling a colleague about it, after which it was very difficult to track it down who has it and who is using it in a team of several Radar Engineers. They had all used it as a definitive reference book on any aspect of Radar design - it covers everything that you need to know and want to know right NOW about a Radar clearly and accurately.

If you are a newcomer and designing a Radar then buy a copy of 'Introduction to Radar' by Skolnik, which has a great source of information for the beginners and up and running Design Engineers, i.e. a good primer.

    Book Description

In this thrilling new crime novel that ingeniously bridges Laurie R. King’s Edgar and Creasey Awards—winning Kate Martinelli series and her bestselling series starring Mary Russell, San Francisco homicide detective Kate Martinelli crosses paths with Sherlock Holmes–in a spellbinding dual mystery that could come only from the “intelligent, witty, and complex” mind of New York Times bestselling author Laurie R. King….

Kate Martinelli has seen her share of peculiar things as a San Francisco cop, but never anything quite like this: an ornate Victorian sitting room straight out of a Sherlock Holmes story–complete with violin, tobacco-filled Persian slipper, and gunshots in the wallpaper that spell out the initials of the late queen.

Philip Gilbert was a true Holmes fanatic, from his antiquated décor to his vintage wardrobe. And no mere fan of fiction’s great detective, but a leading expert with a collection of priceless memorabilia–a collection some would kill for.

And perhaps someone did: In his collection is a century-old manuscript purportedly written by Holmes himself–a manuscript that eerily echoes details of Gilbert’s own murder.

Now, with the help of her partner, Al Hawkin, Kate must follow the convoluted trail of a killer–one who may have trained at the feet of the greatest mind of all times.

3 out of 5 stars Just an Average Read.......2007-09-26

I've read several of Laurie King's books over the years. With the exception of A Grave Talent which was quite good, most of her books are just average, this one included. She is NOT a master of plotting. Her books meander here and there and eventually reach a conclusion that may be less than satisfying. So it is with The Art of Detection. The supporting characters are only vaguely drawn. Her protagonist, Kate Martinelli, is not that interesting. Now I'm a liberal Californian, but I could hardly stand to read one more line about the cultural rainbow of San Francisco, and all the OVERT EXAMPLES of what constitutes a "family" there. All right already. We get it. King's books are not terrible, just way back in the middle of the pack of mystery writers.

3 out of 5 stars Less than the sum of its parts.......2007-09-02

I love Laurie King's Mary Russell novels, and I really like her Kate Martinelli mysteries, so I was very much looking forward to this meshing of those two worlds. But after reading it, I was left thinking, "Why bother?" Going back over it, I really can't find any one part of the book that was particularly bad, but it just didn't draw me in. The descriptions of the landscape in and around San Francisco are vivid; the details of the lives of the Sherlockian characters are fascinating (and it was amusing to see Kate wrestling with the concept of their dedication to their hobby); and the Holmes story-within-a-story was quite entertaining. But there seemed to be a lack of excitement throughout--a sense of apathy about the case and it's connections to the mysterious rediscovered manuscript which made the sudden violence of the ending seem completely out of place and the sudden happiness following that even more disconcerting. And I have to admit, that as a fan of both series, I was really hoping for at least some reaction from any of the characters when they discovered what the manuscript could really be. A quick reference in the last sentence frankly was not enough for me. I'm glad I waited until it was in paperback to buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Kate Martinelli meets Sherlock Holmes.......2007-08-30

Kate and Al are investigating a murder on the old gun emplacements outside of San Francisco. The victim is a fan of Sherlock Holmes, even going so far as to dress as he did and to decorate part of his home according to the description of Holmes' study. The investigation hinges on the question of a manuscript the victim supposedly purchased, said to be a long lost work of Conon-Doyle. Kate is especially interested in this as her partner is a Holmes fan. The ending was a surprise for me and I read all of Laurie Kings's work. A rousing good read.

5 out of 5 stars Quite possibly King's best book.......2007-08-27

I was looking forward to reading a Kate Martinelli/Sherlock Holmes novel, since I've enjoyed King's Martinelli and Mary Russell novels equally (for those who aren't familiar with her Mary Russell books, Sherlock Holmes is a major character in the series). _The Art of Detection_ was even better than I expected! What I liked best were the several threads that tie this novel together with some of her others; in particular, you might want to also read _Locked Rooms_ as it's a Russell/Holmes book set in San Francisco.

5 out of 5 stars Good Read Until The End.......2007-08-26

This is a generally solid, enjoyable book. However, I thought the end detracted from the story and trivialized the overall work. The story line itself - its twists and turns - resulted in an excellent work overall. Had I been the editor, I would have left out the too-pat ending that demonstrates the triumph of the indomitable lesbionic will (aided by the abnegation of law by an arbitrary act of a city functionary), or whatever point Ms. King clumsily tried to make.

I thoroughly enjoy her works; and frankly am puzzled by this apparent pandering postscript appended to the work. Perhaps she's trying to bring a fairy tale (pardon the gay pun) ending to a character she's finally finished with.
