A scatterbrained book........2007-07-16
While I only took Texas Government as it is required to graduate, my professor required me buy this book, ostensibly as a favor to his friend, the author.
This is not a good textbook. While I did learn about Texas government, the materials for the chapters are interspersed and requires a great deal of searching to find. Additionally, much of the information presented in this book is irrelevant to the section title. In many of the sections, for example, the one in the Executive Branch chapter, attorney general section, most of the paragraph simply talks about attorney generals who have recently won elections in Texas. A more generalized overview on the Attorney General's powers and responsibilities was more lightly covered. Because of the lack of substantive material in this book, a good third of the text could be excluded and it would retain its effectiveness.

Just what I expected.......2007-09-10
I was instructed by a counselor to order and read this book. So far, it is helpful. I was pleased with its condition and the promptness in delivery.
Life Changing, Enlightening, Motivating, Real.......2007-09-02
You are not alone anymore when you read Feeling Good. The keys are clearly given for the root causes of depression and anxiety and then you are lead to hope to unlock the door of feeling good. It will take effort and belief but it is truth that will get you out of the pit if you really want out and want to feel good instead of bad. It is one aspect of overcoming depression. I would also recommend lifestyle therapy such as diet and exercise changes.
Book buying customer.......2007-08-28
My shrink suggested I buy Feeling Good so I did. It's a good book that has obviously been written by someone who's done a lot of research on the subject of depression. But that's the problem, for me it's too much research.
The book is longer than a depressed person has patience to read. It's over 700 pages and all that is packaged in a small paperback. All I want is the results of the research not hundreds of pages of studies and survays and research. I know it's good to know all this stuff but as a depressed person I don't really care about it. All I'm interested in is in dealing with the depression. Bottom line, I havn't finished the book yet because it's too much like a text book and that's hardly what I need.
Other than that, as I say, it's a good book with a lot of information if you have time to either read it all or try and find the info you're looking for without putting it away for later.
Excellent - this one's a great size for carrying in car, backpack or purse.......2007-08-27
Down to earth, everyday helpful, and the reverse role-playing exercises Dr. Burns uses with his patients and relates to us in this book are not only funny, witty, amusing and interesting, they are spot-on in their usefulness.
LOVE this book!
Highly Recommended.......2007-08-23
In actual documented scientific studies, reading this book has proved to be as beneficial to people suffering depression than any medication available today. Totally comprehensive, it is an absolute must read for anyone who experiences the dreaded "Black Dog". Highly recommended.

Effective Tool for Positive Mood Change.......2007-08-21
I am still in the middle of reading this book...but so far I am delighted with its primary message: WE ALL HAVE CONTROL OVER OUR OWN MOODS! This book is filled with exercises, checklists and mood inventories...all designed to offer the reader an interactive role in their own healing.
I have struggled with depression my entire life and because of this book am understanding the concept of healing myself through positive thoughts. I would recommend this book to anyone who struggles with depression, regardless of the severity.
Ten days to Self-Esteem.......2007-05-07
10 Days to Self Esteem is a staple in my practice working with clients coping with depression and anxiety. This is the one workbook where clients will consistently complete the exercises and homework. They have shared that the techniques are understandable and they can see their progress. The Cost benefit analysis is the one technique, however, clients /patients find dificult initially; but then catch on. My clients see improvement in themselves once they go through the entire workbook and that the most important. Thanks so much!

Practical steps to Mindfulness.......2007-04-14
This is an excellent companion to Ellen J. Langer's "Mindfulness". It provides practical techniques for becoming mindful in small decisions that can add up to big problems or big benefits.
A Helpful book.......2007-03-31
I liked this book. It helped me alot. It was easy to understand but you have to write in it ALOT! You should get "The Feeling Good Handbook" by Dr. David Burns as well. Dr. Burns has you to read different chapters of the book to go along with Ten Days. I had to stop reading Ten Days and get the Feeling Good Handbook before I could finish.
A new beginning.......2007-03-08
This book is a very good resource for those who are battling depression. Whether you are a manic depressive, or just battling low self-esteem, this book breaks down everything for you and even has work book exercises to help you pin point the problem, then work on it. I highly recommend it.

Wonderful updating--worth buying, even if you have the original!.......2007-08-27
Such helpful medication information, pro's and con's, comprehsinve lists of detailed dietary conflicts with certain meds. All of this added PLUS his excellent cognitive behavior therapy!
Feel Better.......2007-08-26
This is a great "How To" book for this type of illness. Mental illness is sooo cloudy in it's diagnose and treatment but this book is very helpful. You may never talk your loved one into getting help but this book will provide some "clue" into what is needed.
Very Practical.......2007-08-23
This book was recommended to me by a fantastic professional counselor and it has been very helpful to me. Dr. Burns has some great exercises in this book where you write down your "automatic thoughts" about anything that is causing you stress. You identify any distortions in your thinking (which are listed out for you) and then you write a new thought. I have found my depression greatly reduced as I "fix" my faulty thinking.
Feeling Good Handbook.......2007-08-05
I have only purchased the book for one section - communication with spouse. That section was really good and informative and helped a lot. I cannot comment for the rest of the chapters.
The Feeling Good Handbook.......2007-06-27
An excellent reference for understanding depression, anxiety and other difficulties of living life. It is also interesting to just sit down and read to get in touch with your own feelings.

Slow Burn review.......2007-08-06
Just read this book and thought that his basic idea/theory was very interesting and revolutionary. The thought that you really can't improve your heart or lungs only your muscles is totally new to me and most interesting. I'm going to put his ideas to work.
Looks Like The Best Program For Low Carbers.......2007-07-07
I actually bought this book because I had set out to buy "The Cardio-Free Diet", by Jim Karas. I found out about Slow Burn and bought it, too, as well as the 2 Protein Power books.
I have been doing a cardio workout on a stationery bike for about 5 years. I have been spending over three hours a week, and am no longer happy with the results. It seemed no longer to be doing anything. Reading this book told me why.
The Karas approach and the Slow Burn approach are very similar. However, the diet part of Mr. Karas program is not workable for me. I have been a low carber for 6 years and have lost 86 pounds. Mr. Karas' diet approach is low-fat/low-calorie/low-protein/sort of low-carb. See a pattern there? I could never follow that program without ruining my diet efforts. Slow Burn was written by Fred Hahn, the fitness expert, and the Drs. Eades, experts on the low carbohydrate diet. For anyone who is or wants to be low carb, this is the one to buy.
Also, I haven't actually started my Slow Burn workouts yet. It took me a couple of months to read all my books. For the Slow Burn program there is not much one has to buy, but I do still need a couple of things so I haven't started yet. Reading the other comments about people's results in just a month or two has recharged me! I'm looking forward to jumping in.
awsome.......2007-06-02
where all other fitness books fall short. this one doesnt....the authors hit a home run with this..it gets to the point, explanes why, and pictures show you how. i liked the idea you can actually do this at home for little or no money..
Very Enjoyable.......2007-05-29
Very interesting book. After reading it, I felt convinced of the author's ideas, and was excited to start using their program. Wish the book had a little more heft, detail, and described more evidence that supported their case that their form of exercise was the best. Subtract the pages on how to do various exercises, that I found redundant as someone who has lifted weights frequently in the past, and you have a pretty short book. I felt it was worth it though to find out about their method. The method, by the way, was one I had heard about years and years ago. A bodybuilder named Mike Mentzer popularized what he called the "Heavy Duty" training system, which is about the same as the "Slow Burn" system. The "Super Slow" system is the same as well, really. What I wanted out of the book was evidence to convince me that this was the best method, and a little guidance, and I felt that I got that from the book, so I was happy.
SLOW GOING.......2007-04-16
The first 85 pages of this book try and sell the reader on weight training, and discourage people from running.
Another book uses the supper slow method to get amazing results the book: Bigger Muscles in 42 Days by Ellington Darden. In this book he uses the supper slow method to help the man pictured on the cover build 34 pounds of muscle in 42 days. The supper slow method woks but I am not sure that you can get everything out of the gym in just 30 min per week. When I did the Darden program 15-20 min. 6 says per week is all I could do at the gym. The Darden program had me working 4x more than this program. You can skip this book if you know that each exercise is doe for ten seconds up, and ten seconds down. Working your muscles until failure.

Customer Reviews:
good coverage, too much discussion.......2007-08-17
The book has very good coverage, my only complaint is that explanations are too long. I think the whole book can be condensed into 100-200 pages.
Not fun.......2007-04-06
I bought this book because it's the best-seller for JavaServer Faces according to Amazon and I don't like it that much. I've been reading a lot of Computer books lately, and a lot of them are surprisingly well written and fun to read. This one is not. The writing is less than stellar and it doesn't have the dorky humor that other computer books have.
On the plus side, I am learning a lot from this book and I don't have much to compare it to as far as other JSF references. It's the most up-to-date one when I bought it, which is important since it's still an evolving framework.
Very good book, its deep and explains very good.......2007-02-18
The book goes over all the stuff in JSF and explains in a very clear language exactly whats happening under the hood of JSF. I have also some other JSF books and this is by far the best.
The most comprehensive JSF coverage so far!.......2007-01-24
I really enjoyed reading this book. I have several JSF books, and I feel that most of them were rushed to the market. This one is an exception. The coverage is very comprehensive (the book is written by the spec lead), JSF 1.2 is extensively discussed. The book covers multiple open-source "sub-frameworks" for JSF such as Shale and Facelets as well as various component libraries.
JSF is a relatively complex framework, and one does need a good reference to be able to master it. I think this book is it.
JavaServer Faces is the FUTURE.......2007-01-17
This book is great! It starts out simple but moves at a brisk pace that helps keep you interested. I'd definately recommend this to anybody interested in JSF or for someone who is looking for a good MVC framework for Java. If you're a Struts developer and want to make the shift to Java's standard MVC framework than BUY THIS BOOK!

Excellent quilting instructions.......2007-09-03
The instructions of this book are so good that I made the quarter log cabin quilt in just a few days. The illustrations are very helpful.
Fast and Easy Quilting a la Eleanor Burns.......2007-07-17
As usual, Eleanor Burns has taken complex piecework and made it something that even a beginning quilter can do. I have used some of Ms. Burns' techniques in other quilt designs, and I am always pleased with the results. In particular, applique was always my least favorite "chore" in the past, and I avoided it like a migraine. Now, with Eleanor's method using fusible interfacing, it's a snap! Another great success for Eleanor Burns and Quilt in a Day!
Can't wait.......2007-07-08
It is one of the best of Quitl in a day books. She has the best instructions of all the quilters.
Best yet from the best quilting instructor!.......2007-06-13
This is going to be one of my favorites from our friendly laid-back quilting instructor. If you've been longing for something a bit more meaty and advanced from Eleanor, this is the book for you. She will show you how to make things look more advanced than they really are by implementing her clever techniques.
Although I have always learned something new from her prior books (in her elegantly simple manner), I found the older patterns to be too elemental and chunky. There were not enough color changes or pattern varieties, and the blocks always seemed too large and too few; everything had that "very first quilt" look to it. Hence I shied away from her most recent publications and even sold or gave away a few of the old ones.
THIS book, however, is a very pleasant surprise. There are 13 designs, presented in order of the four seasons. You will find blocks based on crazy hearts, "log cabin" pine trees with appliqued cardinals, stars intermingled with 4-patch blocks, fish, flower baskets, and a Twin Sisters block based on a pattern from 1845. I'll save the rest so you can be (pleasantly) surprised!!
In typical fashion, Eleanor uses a range of simple-to-clever techniques: foundations, embellishments, folded borders, curved seams, fusible applique, equilateral finished triangles, and fussy cutting. She also includes her clever method for Flying Geese/Star Points which guarantees a perfect piece, and her fusible applique technique replaces the usual paper-piecing to create a fabulous Lady Liberty circular crown block.
As I mentioned earlier, Eleanor breaks away from her usual huge/chunky block size; most of the blocks are under 9 inches with one as small as 5 inches. She just had to include a block that measures 17 by 22 inches (in a cute fish pattern), but I'll allow her that!
As in her prior books, most projects feature her own fabric lines, but there is a wee bit less emphasis on floral here. And some projects are shown done up in batiks and tone-on-tones, demonstrating how you can personally tailor her simple patterns to your own fabric preferences. Directions are provided for a variety of quilt-top sizes, plus table runners and pillow cases.
Just a few less than positive things to note: The very first design is for a crazy Valentine, and she instructs you to use foundation piecing!! To me, it seems somewhat oxymoronic to call this "crazy" when the exact same foundation is used for every block. When I make this one, I will skip the paper-piecing and do it up in true "crazy quilt" fashion. Also, the publication is in a spiral ring binder; great idea but bad execution for clutzes like me. Once you have spiraled the front or back cover it never seems to go back into place correctly without you having to re-leaf all the pages. Small thing, but a possible minor pain for folks with MS or arthritis. And you will probably find yourself buying yet another rotary ruler (don't we have enough??!!) to take the best advantage of her technique. Finally, I would love to have seen the publisher put a photo of each project on the table of contents page. I've seen this done before and it really saves you from constantly flipping through the pages to find that one design you thought you saw but can't remember where. This would have been especially helpful given that there are 13 different projects here.
Now, so that I can leave on a positive note, let me end by saying there truely is something here for every one, regardless of you preference for fabrics, pattern styles, or block sizes. If you want to add a publication that is sure to become a classic, this is the one to buy!
QUILTS THROUGH THE SEASNOS.......2007-06-08
I will be making many of the quilts featured in this book!
Customer Reviews:
A bit of a strain for non-students of the industry.......2006-03-03
Very informative - yet just not what I would have imagined. It would terrific it told you how to create your fashion business from scratch.
I used this book for a class..........2004-07-20
This book was to be purchased for my "Business of Fashion" class. What a great purchase. After the class was over I didn't turn it back in to get money for it. I kept it knowing that someday I may want a reference guide. It was a great investment!
A very good introduction and view into the Fashion Business.......1999-06-15
I not only learned alot from reading this book but actually enjoyed the reading considering it's a text book. As someone who's trying to get back into the fashion industry after a 20 year hiatus; I feel that I have the knowledge I need to head in the direction I want to go now. I really liked how they used real companies for examples and at the end of each chapter they have an explanation of a job in the industry with comments from people in those jobs. There's lots of charts, lists of important contacts, calendars of events, etc that will be important to anyone starting a fashion business or wanting to find a job in fashion.
