Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Book Description

Deborah and Simon St. James have taken a holiday in the winter landscape of Lancastershire, hoping to heal the growing rift in their marriage. But in the barren countryside awaits bleak news: The vicar of Wimslough, the man they had come to see, is dead—a victim of accidental poisoning. Unsatisfied with the inquest ruling and unsettled by the close association between the investigating constable and the woman who served the deadly meal, Simon calls in his old friend Detective Inspector Thomas Lynley. Together they uncover dark, complex relationships in this rural village, relationships that bring men and women together with a passion, with grief, or with the intention to kill. Peeling away layer after layer of personal history to reveal the torment of a fugitive spirit, Missing Joseph is award-winning author Elizabeth George's greatest achievement.

As usual, Elizabeth George hits another home run with this book. Her natural talent to weave a mystery into the fabric of our favorite detective's increasingly interesting life is fantastic. Couldn't put it down -- but can never put her books down.

4 out of 5 stars Determined.......2006-06-09

Missing Joseph marks the half way point of my determination to read all of the Lynley/Havers George mysteries. Her series is most definitely in the tradition of the English mystery novel (although not as gritty say as Ruth Rendell) with a soap opera melodrama twist. She writes more in the vein of Christie and Sayers-a bit updated of course. They are very easy and pleasurable reads and George writes a palatable mystery. I let her unfold her story and really don't try to outwit the detectives. This novel, however, was pretty obvious from the beginning once you got into the Lanchester village and learned of the main characters. All the detectives did was discover the circumstances.

Now my take on the characters so far. George writes in parallel storylines. It is more and more obvious as I get further and further in the series. I have read ( and I am a bit surprised concerning the dislike of Deborah) that George sees the character of Deborah more like herself. I like Deborah and her husband, Simon. In my opinion their marriage is an examination of contemporary marriage. And I find their entire love story very romantic in that it truly reflects a love based on unselfishness and deep commitment based on the needs of the spouse-trying to achieve a balance of the self with the couple.

The balance between the couples, for me reflects the Shakespearean quote concerning life being a tragedy for those who feel and a comedy for those who think. Deborah, the creative artist/photographer, is our feeler. Simon, being a man is a wonderful combination of both-after all men are suppose to be natural problem solvers and that is why the couple conflicts but their mutual love is a strong foundation and what allows to continually search in how to make lemonade out of the lemons they have been handed in their life and marriage.

Their marriage ( and I know Lynley and Helen eventually marry with dire consequences) contrasts greatly with the Lynley and Helen relationship. Both are basically "good" people without a clue as to what they need or what they want or what the whole concept of love is about. Talk about commitment phobics. For some unknown reason mystery writers,in particular, find this continual push/pull type of relationship desirable. George uses it to make the St. James marriage image the deeper one. Deborah chose -and in my mind, wisely-Simon. Lynley's concept of love and relationships and marriage rather unpalatable. Oddly he is a a misguided romantic and a realist-especially in regards to his social position. If he had not broken his engagement with Deborah maybe he would have been a better man and learned something. Instead I think he got the "right" marriage to the "right woman" as his social status would have demanded. Helen, although not without her charms and good heart-is not a romantic and is very much a realist. Throughout the novels when Lynley and Helen say they love each other (besides the hot monkey sex which seems to be a large part of the definition) I wonder what they are talking about. Their discussions are very superficial(except when discussing solving crimes)and seem always at cross purposes. So far In Missing Joseph this dance is very much so. Frankly I think George once she married them off found herself with no where to go and why after the marriage only two books of the four delved into the relationship. Lynley shallow opposed to St James depth.

Maybe I will feel differently after I read a few more, especially With No One As Witness. Nevertheless George spins a wonderful yarn. I look forward to the second half.

5 out of 5 stars This is perhaps my favourite Linley/Havers book.......2006-02-18

I liked this book from the eerie beginning to the very end. The characters are well developed and multidimensional, the atmosphere well rendered, and the whole book grew on me for a long time after I finished it (so much so that I reread it after a couple of years). When I choose an Elizabeth George as a present for someone, this is the one I end up buying.

While I liked most books in the series, "Playing for the Ashes" and "A place of hiding" did not absorb me much and I had to make an effort to finish them (I have read all the others except her latest "With no one as a witness").

Some of the characters got on my nerves in later books (mostly Deborah and Helen), and I could do entirely wihtout the nobility part, but I did not feel any of these flaws in this book.

While it is not the first in the series (which is also quite good) it could be a good place to start for those who do not know this author. The only problem may be that the others might then not feel up to par. There is always something special with the first book one reads of an author that you end up liking, and this one is so good that it does not need this advantage...

5 out of 5 stars Love, Attraction, Lust and Motherhood, with No Apple Pie!.......2005-06-13

Missing Joseph is a powerful story about what it means to be a human being, a parent, a lover, a friend, a daughter and someone who misuses others. While there is a mystery in the book, the story itself transcends the mystery. The detection involved is skillfully designed to help illuminate Ms. George's main subjects.

The characters involved build on past novels by looking more deeply into the relationships between Simon and Deborah St. James, Thomas Lynley and Lady Helen Clyde, and Barbara Havers and her mother. To extend those themes in new directions, Ms. George adds several new characters who are tied together by tragedy. These characters include a widowed local constable, an Anglican vicar, the vicar's witchcraft-practicing housekeeper, a reclusive provider of potions from herbs and her daughter. Seldom will you discover a book that develops so many characters in so many dimensions in one book. I found myself staying up past 1 a.m. to finish the story, and would have gone later had it been necessary.

As the book opens, the vicar raises a fundamental question that resonates throughout the book: Where's Joseph? Originally asked in connection to the many images of Jesus and Mary, that question takes on haunting new meanings before the book ends.

Even if you have never read another book in this distinguished series, I'm sure you would find this book to be a rewarding choice.

5 out of 5 stars Another complex, convoluted winner.......2003-08-05

I classify mystery writers into three categories. First there is Sue Grafton and her alphabet series, always a casual, enjoyable read without a lot of thinking. Moving up, we get to Patrician Cornwell and her excellent, sometimes great works which are darker and slightly more complex. Finally at the top there is Elizabeth George, the Titaness of Mystery, whose books reed of erudition, superb crafting, intelligence and studies of the human nature second to none.

The eerie opening, so fitting yet foreboding, leads into a complex tale of murder and mayhem. The same cast is back again though my favorite character, Havers, is not a major figure this time around. Despite the incredible writing it is the final synthesis of the various plots that makes the whole affair worthwhile. In other words, her literary abilites are highlighted by her technical abilities.

What can I say except run to your local bookstore and snatch this up?

Book Description

The sudden disappearance of Judge Joseph Crater nearly 75 years ago led to perhaps the most famous missing persons case of the twentieth century. Crater, a justice of New York's state Supreme Court, vanished amid political scandal. A public frenzy about what happened to Crater provided impetus for scrutiny of New York's Tammany Hall political machine--and ultimately for the vanishing of Tammany Hall as well. Richard J. Tofel's Vanishing Point is a revealing look at New York as the Jazz Age gave way to the Depression, and at one of the most intriguing stories in the annals of urban America.

4 out of 5 stars We no longer need to wonder ; "where is Judge Crater"?.......2005-09-08

This was an intriguing story about a colorful character from one of the most interesting periods in our history.Forty pages from the end the New York Daily News ran an article possibly solving the mystery. That made the read all the more riveting.A must read (esp.when accom. by the updates to the story ) for all 20th century U.S. history buffs.

1 out of 5 stars Barely Mentions Judge Crater.......2005-01-02

Judge Crater left a New York restaurant on the evening of August 6, 1930 and was never seen again. A female friend who was there with him disappeared several weeks later. He'd been a judge for just three months. The problem with the book is the author is not interested in this mystery; he really wants to write about Tammany Hall and that's what he devotes almost the entire book to, apparently citing Crater only to lure in readers. I felt ripped off.

4 out of 5 stars As much a history of "Tammany Hall" as a mystery.......2004-11-23

Author Richard Tofel never claims to have all of the answers. But the circumstances surrounding the disappearance of New York Supreme Court Justice Joseph Crater in August 1930 certainly makes for fascinating reading. It is a curious tale, particularly given the strange reaction of not only his friends and associates, but also of his wife Stella. Yet there is much more to this book than merely the unsolved disappearance of a single individual.
"Vanishing Point" is yet another book chronicling the cast of charactors and the inner workings of New York's legendary political machine known as Tammany Hall. And as I have found in many of these books it can become a bit difficult to follow given the large number of officials involved and the sordid and crooked relationships they participated in. When a vacancy occured on the New York Supreme Court in the Spring of 1930 Joseph Crater, a man no one expected to get the nod, was tapped by then Governor Franklin Roosevelt for the seat. Why was he selected? Who recommnded him? And is it possible that Joseph Crater literally bought his way on to the New York Supreme Court? Why did he suddenly disappear without a trace in the summer of 1930 and just what became of him? Did he leave the country? Was he murdered? Who might have been involved? So many questions. Based on a substantial body of available evidence "Vanishing Point" considers a number of intriguing possibilities. And although this case was never solved, Tofel does make a very convincing argument that the disappearance of Judge Crater set into motion a series of events that would ultimately spell the end of machine politics in New York City.
Exactly what happened to Judge Crater will probably never be known. Nevertheless I found this book to be time well spent and a pretty good read. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Jimmy Hoffa Wasn't the only one........2004-10-31

We all know of the disappearance of Jimmy Hoffa. But he was not the first. In 1930 Judge Joseph Crater cashed some checks for about $5,000 and went to dinner with some friends. Parting with the friends on the curb outside the restaurant he was never seen again. For fifty years the New York City Police Department tried to find him. Certainly dead by now (he's be 115 years old) there are no really good leads, no deathbed confessions, no real idea of what happened.

This appears to be the first book written on Judge Crater. It is extremely well researched, exceedingly detailed and gives a better feeling for the times than most others. As for what really happened ....

I bought the book and the information was helpful to a point but the title should have been: "You Can Find -ALMOST- Anybody" ... If you're are trying to locate a living birth mother and you only have her maiden name, chances are you will have the same luck findng her as I did finding mine... NONE. If you don't know your birth mother's approximate age or birthdate, where she was born, social security number, last known whereabouts, marriage certificate(s), relatives of hers, or cooperation from your own relatives... chances are you won't find her. If you're fortunate to be a guest on a Sally, Maury, or Montel show trying to locate a lost relative, that would be great. Otherwise, the author (Mr Culligan), refers you to a private-eye located in Miami, Fl. who was somewhat helpful in my efforts. Thanx 4 listening..... James E Burns: Richmond, Va. I have never found my father, but have found out so much about him that no one could have ever have told me just knowing him. I would say it is a perfect tool in getting the ball rolling if you are wanting to locate anyone. I would never have known that I have so many rights without it. It is a very straight forward and to the point type book and in plan english-not all that legal talk.

Book Description

Users will find a lot to like about the new iPhoto 4. With Smart Albums, they can organize photos similar to the way iTunes creates playlists. And they can share photos over a network using the same Apple technology for sharing music. There's much more, and our new Missing Manual covers everything in detail and with scrupulous objectivity. But this witty and authoritative guide goes much further, giving readers the basics they need to make iPhoto really work:

Essentials of photography. Using iPhoto without a grounding in camera technique is like getting a map before you've learned to drive. This book offers a friendly guide to the digital camera, and professional tips for making everyday snapshots look spectacular.

Editing basics. Even great photos need a little touching up. This book shows how to master iPhoto's brightness and contrast controls, cropping tools, new Enhance and Retouch commands, and more.

Finding an audience. iPhoto excels at presenting photos. The book goes into detail about creating and uploading a Web site gallery, creating QuickTime movies from your pictures (both for DVD and on the Web), interactive DVD slideshows, AppleScripting iPhoto, important information on backing up and managing batches of photo files, and putting together one of Apple's linen photo books, including hints on how to arrange the pictures, what book formats work best for what kind of material, how to override the installed designs, and how to make up your own!

iPhoto 4: The Missing Manual, 3rd Edition covers all of these procedures, step by step and offers details on even the smallest nips and tucks.

5 out of 5 stars Best Book on iPhoto.......2004-08-20

Pogue does it again by explaining each feature in language that is easy to understand and pleasant to read. He doesn't rely on humor nearly as much as in the Dummies series (which he used to contribute to regularly). In the Missing Manual series he takes a slightly more serious approach (but his humor shows through quite often) and makes regular people like us able to do all the tricks of the pros.

4 out of 5 stars Valuable for the beginner.......2004-07-29

Derrick Story does it again. This book is great and his other book, Digital Photography Hacks is also excellent. Of course, they are both valuable for different reasons, though this book starts by covering many of the same topics as Digital Photography Hacks by spending the first three chapters on how to take better shots. Bad photos make for a bad iPhoto library of course, so the advice is appreciated.

The bulk of the book is in explaining all of the features of iPhoto. Long term iPhoto users will probably not find any surprises here. It's a missing manual, so it covers the basics, and it does it well. For more advanced topics, like managing multiple iPhoto libraries, or making use of Applescript, there is some coverage at the end but not much.

Definitely a good buy for anyone just starting, or relatively unfamiliar with iPhoto and who is looking to use the application extensively to manage large numbers of photos. Probably also worth a look even if you are familiar with iPhoto.

5 out of 5 stars Great Manual!.......2004-07-16

"iPhoto 4: The Missing Manual" is an update of the 2003 book, "iPhoto2" and, like the original, is another in the well-respected O'Reilly Media "Missing Manual" series. "iPhoto4" covers the latest Apple iPhoto software while also providing basic instruction in near-professional quality digital photography.

Derrick Story and the Mac community's favorite writer, David Pogue, continue as authors. Besides covering the latest and newest features of iPhoto 4 like its Control Bar, speed enhancements, Star Ratings, Smart Albums, and more, this latest edition of the book continues providing practical guidance on selecting and using the latest consumer-level digital cameras and equipment. The emphasis is on providing information and guidance to move beyond mere snapshooting. It does take something more to become able to make quality images, both in acquiring the image in the camera and processing it afterwards. And, of course, having quality images is not of much use unless one knows how to store, display, and distribute them to friends and family.

In five parts covering digital cameras and photography subject items, iPhoto basics, creating and producing photo projects, advanced iPhoto tips, and troubleshooting, the authors provide all the guidance an amateur or advanced amateur needs for shooting, editing, and sharing digital photo resources.

New sections of the book include how to upgrade from iPhoto2 to 4, how to maintain and upgrade photo libraries and a special section on camera-phone photography.

This is an excellent volume and value for beginner to advanced amateur digital photographers.

5 out of 5 stars Plenty of pleasant surprises and useful information..........2004-06-04

You have a Mac, you have iPhoto 4, and you have a digital camera. This book will help you get the most out of all three. I was pleased to find a wide variety of hints, tips and advice covering all skill levels. My favorite tip was how to view the invisible PDF that is submitted to the Photo Book printer. If you plan on publishing a Photo Book, this tip alone pays for the price of the book in peace of mind.

The book is divided into four sections: how to take pictures, editing your pictures in iPhoto, sharing your pictures with iPhoto, and finally "iPhoto Stunts".

The first section has little to do with iPhoto and more to do with helping you do everything you can to get the best pictures possible before loading them into iPhoto. There wasn't anything really new here that you wouldn't find in any decent book on how to take good pictures, but it is handy to have it all in one book... You don't need an extra book on the basic rules to taking good pictures.

The next section describes the iPhoto library, where it keeps the files, what happens when you crop, retouch, enhance, or use the other simple editing tools. It notes that iPhoto is not for serious photo editing and points out a few other products that would be better suited for advanced editing. The step-by-step descriptions for each of the editing tools included with iPhoto are very easy to understand and follow.

The following section describes the many ways iPhoto helps you share your pictures. Among them are printing pictures, sending them to Apple for printing, creating a slideshow, publishing to a personal web site or to your .Mac account, creating a Photo Book, creating a Quicktime movie or an iDVD slideshow. There are plenty of screenshots and information for each of these, so you won't get lost between each step.

The last section is comprised of tips and tricks to satisfy your inner-geek; how to export pictures to your PDA, how to get pictures from your cameraphone, and several AppleScript tricks. There are also excellent tips on how to burn a CD or DVD to share with your family and friends running Windows. There is also an appendix that covers each iPhoto menu option individually and a troubleshooting section on common problems.

A very well done book - it really is "The book that should have been in the box".

    Book Description

Apple's free, wildly popular iPhoto software does for digital photography what iMovie did for camcorder footage--and what Apple did for computers. In short, iPhoto is a gorgeous, polished digital shoebox for downloading, organizing, printing, publishing, and touching up unlimited numbers of digital photos.

In this comprehensive, witty companion to Mac OS X: The Missing Manual and iMovie 2: The Missing Manual, Pogue Press/O'Reilly gives iPhoto 1.1 the one feature it lacks: a manual. With this guide, Macintosh fans can take their digital photos to the screen, to the Web, to printouts, to hardbound photo books, even to DVDs. And they'll learn how to take iPhoto far beyond its seemingly simple feature list.

But giving someone iPhoto without also teaching basic digital-camera techniques is like giving a map to a teenager without teaching him to drive. That's why iPhoto: The Missing Manual also covers choosing and mastering a digital camera, basic photographic techniques, and tips for shooting special subjects like kids, sports, nighttime shots, portraits, and more.

iPhoto: The Missing Manual is coauthored by an experienced team of Macintosh experts: David Pogue, series creator and New York Times computer columnist; Joseph Schorr, Macworld columnist and longtime Pogue collaborator; and Derrick Story, professional photographer and O'Reilly Network author.

5 out of 5 stars Another excellent Missing Manual.......2003-01-21

Another excellent Missing Manual product. There is more to iPhoto than meets the eye, and this book covers every detail in a conversational and user-friendly tone, without being cute or obtuse. You'll learn not only how to use iPhoto, but how to overcome some of its limitations, such as creating additional photo libraries after the first one fills up. The layout is attractive and legible. The detailed coverage of digital photography basics - buying a camera and taking good pictures - is another bonus.

As I've said of other Missing Manuals, if I were to write a guide, I'd want it to read like this one. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars goes way beyond iPhoto basics.......2002-09-08

This is a must have for any digital photographer planning to use iPhoto. Many books of this sort aren't much more than an explanded version of what should be in the program's help files. This book goes way beyond. One of the co-authors is a professional photographer; the first quarter of the book is his well written explanation of the essentials of composition and (digital) photography. The bulk of the book describes not just how you can use iPhoto, but how you ought to use it and why. I found the advice provided practical and non obvious; it has made me much more productive in my use of this software. As well, the authors provide pointers to some downloadable plug ins that make iPhoto much more useful - I can't imagine going without the iPhoto library manager and the betterhtml plug in. The only downside of the book is that it will be much less useful in a year or two after Apple has updated their product - but in the meantime, but it, use it, and enjoy it.

    5 out of 5 stars A "must-have" instructional reference.......2002-09-06

Collaboratively written by David Pogue (computer columnist for the New York Times); Joseph Schorr (software product manager and Macworld contributor); and Derrick Story (professional photographer and manager of the O'Reilly Network), iPhoto: The Missing Manual is a straightforward, comprehensive, authoritative, and thoroughly user-friendly guide to the free iPhoto 1.1.1. software for the Macintosh OS X. iPhoto: The Missing Manual is a superbly written and presented introduction to making the best use of iPhoto ability to create works of art from the footage of a digital camera. From setting up slide shows; to designing pages in a photography book; to file management, lighting techniques, and more, iPhoto: The Missing Manual is a "must-have" instructional reference for anyone seeking to make the most of their iPhoto software.

5 out of 5 stars An afternoon and this book means you'll master the program.......2004-02-21

I've had iPhoto for about a year, but wasn't familiar with any of the features save importing my photos from my camera. After a few hours with this book, however, I've mastered the program and received a lot of kudos on the improved quality of my shots.

The first section is on how to take better pictures. As I've never taken a photography class, this section was particularly useful for me. It breaks down the different types of pictures (portraits, action shots, close-ups, night shots, etc...) and tells you how to get the best shot.

The meat of the book is in the second section though - that part details how to use iPhoto, from importing pictures to touching them up and eliminating red eye. I primarily use my photos for my website. As such, I wanted to crop them, touch them up, and eliminate red eye. All three of those functions are easy to use after reading this book. It takes me a minute or so to turn my original, off-centered, dark, photo into something worthy of going online.

The Missing Manual goes through each function in order, explains what it does, and what the potential drawbacks are. It also goes into file management - I had no idea that iPhoto stored a copy of the original of any image I altered, even if it was just to rotate it. I followed a suggestion in the book, downloaded a piece of freeware, and was able to open up a lot of space on my hard drive by eliminating these unnecessary duplicates.

The Missing Manual also details how to edit photos in other programs (such as Adobe Photoshop) without causing problems in iPhoto. As I occasionally have to resize pictures based on the DPI, this information was quite useful.

The third section describes how to show off your photos. As I usually just upload them to my website, I only perused this section. It looks to contain some useful information though - how to make a slideshow with a soundtrack, turn the slideshow into a QuickTime video, back up your photos on a DVD, upload them as a photo album to a website, print out a photo album, e-mail them, and more.

5 out of 5 stars Little missing in this manual.......2004-02-15

The Missing Manual series has been around for quite some time, but I have never felt the need to buy one until I started doing some serious work with iPhoto. iPhoto 2: The Missing Manual was a good volume to assist.

One of the things I like about Apple's iApps is that they hide a great deal of complexity behind a simple interface; they do indeed make the complex simple. The drawback to this is that I often find myself ignoring the more powerful aspects of the application and never using it to its full. It was here that the Missing Manual came to my help.

The target audience for this book would probably be a little less technical than myself, however when I find myself in a field I don't understand well I don't mind a little stuff for the absolute newbie. This book has an entire first section that deals with photography and digital photography in particular that may be a total repeat for some, I found it a welcome reminder of how to get a good photograph along with some extremely useful hints about the new technology and choosing a camera. It covers such topics as composition and lighting for a host of different situations such as landscapes, night, portraits, children and sports.

It then goes on to a section of similar size on the basics that covers getting the photos from your camera to the Mac, organising the photos using albums and keywords and then editing your shots.

A third section covers the various ways of publishing and showing your photos such as printing, CD, and web pages, and a final section with some tricks and tips on things like managing your libraries. There are two appendices: one very useful troubleshooting guide, and a menu-by-menu look at iPhoto 2.

I particularly appreciated the thorough treatment of how to get the most out of iPhoto when printing photo books and creating web pages in the third section; it was here that I really discovered how little I knew from just `playing' with the application. The book is peppered with useful information and tips that take you beyond the level that most of us discovered when we ran and used the program. The authors have also provided some marvelous explanations of what is going on, the "why" as well as the "what."

The book is well written with a readable, light, almost witty style that somehow deceives the reader as to the depth of the material being covered. It is only when I reflected back on how much the book taught me that I realised how well it had done the job.

O'Reilly have their usual web page for the book with a sample chapter, Table of Contents and Index. Pogue Press have a neat idea - they have a page that features all the software mentioned in the book. A neat idea that I liked a lot.

In conclusion, I would recommend this book to everyone who is serious about digital photography on their Mac. If you have used iPhoto for a long time you may think the book a waste, but I'd be surprised if even long-time users didn't get their money's worth out of this book. I much preferred the style of this volume to IDG's iPhoto 2 for Dummies, the only other real competitor for this volume was iPhoto 2 for Mac OS X: A Visual Quickstart Guide, and that is a shorter volume with less depth and less advice for photography and nothing on the camera technology, though I think Engst's writing seems a bit clearer at times.

I wouldn't buy a "Missing Manual" for every iApp or the operating system, but if you take the slogan for the series seriously, "The book that should have been in the box" (for the box is entirely devoid of books), I think they are a marvelous help for becoming a true `power user.

5 out of 5 stars From a "new to this stuff" perspective - great book.......2003-11-26

Can you imagine a software manual that makes you feel smart, not dumb? David Pogue's iPhoto 2: The Missing Manual does just that. It's written in a way that's easy to understand without being condescending. The straightforward style is well organized, sometimes humorous and always informative.

I'm new to Mac and iPhoto. Some things come easily but the details are often evasive. The Missing Manual fills in the blanks. I was hooked from the first chapter. The discussion of digital cameras and their use has opened my eyes and was a terrific intro to using iPhoto.

The Missing Manual is a reference book that's enjoyable to use.

5 out of 5 stars Another Great Missing Manual.......2003-08-07

Apple Computer markets a concept they call "the digital hub" representing its integrated hardware and software combinations, especially the iLife package (iPhoto2, iTunes, iChat, iMovie, and iDVD). Beyond Apple's traditionally elegant and harmonious hardware-software integration, the iLife programs are brilliantly designed to allow users to easily enjoy important non-computer things in their lives - photos, music, home and family and recreational video, etc. - while benefitting from the enormous background power of computer applications.

With iPhoto2, for example, images (scanned or from a digital camera) can be easily imported into the computer, viewed, printed, burned to CD or DVD, emailed, posted to websites, or composed in professional quality albums with only a handful of clicks. Other than acquiring the images themselves, iPhoto2 and the Mac can facilitate an enormous depth and breadth of enjoyment of photo images without great effort or computer knowledge. The iLife idea is to have the computer aspects work seamlessly and near sub-consciously in the background allowing the user to enjoy his or her photos.

In essence, Apple has designed and created a hardware-software combination which, in itself, does virtually everything a non-professional needs to fully enjoy photo imaging. All of the iLife applications are designed with the "hub" concept - put all the tools needed into one easily learned and implemented application; - in other words, think of what people need and give that to them in an integrated and elegantly-designed package.

As easy as the iLife applications are to use, like all computer aspects, ease of use is relative - there is no real "easy" computer or application - it's an issue of something only more or less easy to use than another thing. Consequently, there is still a need for focused documentation and instruction to allow users to better and more fully utilize the features and power of the applications. This is where "iPhoto2: The Missing Manual" becomes useful. "iPhoto2" is part of the acclaimed "Missing Manual" series published by Pogue Press/O'Reilly & Associates, Inc. Like all of the other "Missing Manuals" it is a comprehensive, systematic, well-written paper manual where Apple provides none.

Whether intentionally designed, or not, "iPhoto2" mimics the "hub" concept - bringing together into one elegant unit all the information and tools needed to productively enjoy digital imagery. "iPhoto2" contains five parts - an opening section on how to select and buy a digital camera, and sections on

how to use a digital camera, iPhoto2 basics, how to create and produce photo projects like slideshows, prints, web galleries, photo CDs, etc., and a section on how to take advantage of specialized iPhoto2 features like making screensavers and desktop images and using Applescript. Also included is a separate set of appendices about trouble shooting, a menu-by-menu description of iPhoto2 features and commands, and a small section describing where to find additional digital photo resources.

The trio of authors are David Pogue, noted writer, NY Times computer columnist, and wit; Joseph Schorr, established Macworld writer and author of "Macworld MacSecrets"; and Derrick Story, author of "The Digital Photos Pocket Guide" (which was reviewed here favorably a number of months ago).

This book is structured into two overarching themes - as an iPhoto2 manual and as basic instruction in near-professional quality photography. Overlapping some material from "The Digital Pocket Guide", part one of this book covers basic digital camera concepts: resolution, memory cards, batteries, controls, etc. It then continues with guides on image composition and tips and tricks on how to obtain good quality photos in a large set of situations: portraits, travel, sports, night scenes, and the like. It does no good to have the ability to easily view, print, and e-mail bad photos. Learn how to take a good shot. These sections of the book will help a lot.

The iPhoto2 parts describe how to get your "good" images into the application, how iPhoto2 is structured on the hard drive with its designated Library, for example, and its organizing concepts - "Albums" and "Rolls." Other application features like editing, copying, and archiving images are well- explained and detailed.

The most interesting chapters are 7-12 detailing how to get quality and efficient production from the program.Features like the "One-click Slideshow" and how to make Quicktime movies from a folder of images are highlighted.

All in all, this is another well-done publication from Pogue/O'Reilly.

    5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2003-06-17

At first I wondered how an entire book could be written about iPhoto--this one is packed with useful information. I had no idea how much can be done with this application. I own a number of Missing Manuals, and they're all very good.

    Book Description

Impending global ecological collapse begs the question: Are humans a planetary disease?

Dr. Lucille Boggs, a maverick scientist at a large western university, had been uncovering surprising answers as to why humans remain indifferent to the looming ecological collapse that jeopardizes the world today. Yet her untimely death in 1999 threatened to put an end to her extraordinary discoveries. Through an ingenious manipulation involving her Last Will and Testament, however, she managed to goad a nephew into following a mysterious trail she had so nearly completed -- a journey that takes him and his wife to remote territories, and ultimately, leads them back to the truths they hold inside. Entertaining and informational, Balance Point is a timely book with cutting-edge relevance. It is recommended for anyone concerned about the state of the Earth, as well as for the environmentally complacent.

In Balance Point: Searching for a Spiritual Missing Link, Joseph Jenkins examines the global implications of a society on the brink of both planetary destruction and spiritual revolution, weaving scientific facts within a tapestry of mystery and adventure to reveal remarkable spiritual concepts. Rich with a non-religious mysticism reminiscent of Carlos Castaneda, it draws from the astute observations of some of the world's leading ecological visionaries like David Suzuki and Paul Hawken. Balance Point is a singular work that imparts a disturbing, yet hopeful awareness of the world around us and the universe within us, revealing what may be the route to our planet's, and our species', long term survival.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Gripping, Inspiring and Educational Read!.......2006-10-01

This book reads like an adventure mystery novel, yet it is the reportedly true story of the author Joseph Jenkins' quest to fulfill his late aunt Lucy's research project to discover why the human race has become complacent about the impending ecological doom from it's parasitic "robbing frenzy" of Earth's resources and to find his own "balance point".

At first, the adventure of discovery seems like a "wild goose chase" taking Jenkins and his wife "Annie" around the country meeting scientists, witches, scholars and eventually down to the rainforest home of a South American shaman by the name of "Eduardo" who opens up new vistas of deep ecological awareness for them and the pieces of this mystery start to come together.

Will humanity wake up in time to realize it's destructive bad habits and set a new course towards good stewardship of Earth? Jenkins does not know, but realizes that he can't just sit back and take it as it comes- he fine tunes his life to be as ecologically correct as he can to reduce his environmental footprint for healthy, happy, ecologically responsible living.

Well written and engrossing, Balance Point is a thought provoking discourse on personal awareness and environmental consciousness. The book finishes with an ADDENDUM full of resources, contacts, and ideas for "symbiotic" (ecologically balanced) living on Earth. HIGHLY RECOMMENED FOR ALL BACKGROUNDS AND AGES!

Balance Point -- Searching for a Spiritual Missing Link
    Joseph Jenkins, 2000

"We are spiritually balanced when we live in harmony with the greater whole - with each other, with all of life, and with the Earth mother." Eduardo

It was particularly significant to me that I received and was immediately drawn to Balance Point just two weeks after 9/11. As stunned as I was by 9/11 and as emotionally devastating as it was and is, I was also immensely grateful that over 6000 souls would agree to leave in such horrific circumstances in order to force our awareness that there is no them, there is only us. I found a similar theme in the Balance Point story regarding the environment. Jenkins teaches us that there is "no away" when we throw out the trash, there is only somewhere else. Joe Jenkins, along with his immediate family, the inimitable Aunt Lucy, Eduardo the Shaman, and the Circle of Sisters lead us on a spiritual quest from Halifax to Montana to Peru. Think James Redfield. Think page turner that you simply cannot put down. Jenkins adventure teaches us as much about our true spiritual connection to the ecology of our Earth Mother as Redfield taught us about our spiritual energy dynamics.

In an interview with Joseph Jenkins after reading this engaging book, I asked him just how much of the story was fiction and how much was fact. His response was "The story is a blending of fact and fiction.... I have been asked by many readers exactly which is the fact and which is the fiction...all of the ecological issues are factual." Jenkins leaves it to us to decide whether we care about the details of the story or the state of the ecology of the earth. If we are willing to step outside ourselves, even for just a moment, the adventure becomes significant only because of the passion and point with which the story is told. Jenkins shows us how quickly our eco-systems are dying out and does not allow us to walk away unchanged.

Balance Point is one of the most well written and beautifully produced self-published books I have had the pleasure of reviewing. The cover is lusciously printed with the gorgeous colors of Mother Earth - deep brown, mellow gold, royal purple. The typeface is easy to read and the chapter graphics are terrific. Joseph Jenkins has compiled an impressive list of resources and short blurbs on how you can begin to change your behavior today and how you can continue to make a difference in all your tomorrows. Jenkins reminds us that in finishing the story we should consider the next step the beginning of our individual mission of symbiotic living. This is a great pass along book! Read it and pass along the good news!

1 out of 5 stars Funnier than he intended.......2004-10-21

This reminds me of the morose, self-obsessed poetry I wrote at fourteen. Don't buy it for the "thought"- Jenkins is sophomoric and intellectually underdeveloped. Don't buy it for the writing- Jenkin's dialogue is so bad, it will make you wince. Don't buy it for the... heck, just don't buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Should Be Required Reading.......2002-01-13

Every once in a while, a book comes along that earns a "front and center" spot in my library. This is one such book.

One of the hardest things we, as human beings, have to do is to face the man in the mirror. Too many of us have been successfully avoiding it for years. Balance Point makes continuing to do so very difficult. While some may be surprised at the theories presented, one would also be hard pressed to deny the facts behind them.

The message this book sends to the world is not new - we're in trouble and running out of time - but rarely have I seen someone hit the mark so precisely when it comes to characterizing and illustrating the responsibility of the human race for our present dilemmas. The only thing sadder than the fact that we are like a cancer killing it's host [the earth] is that continuing to ignore our mirrors will be our ultimate demise.

Balance Point is a fascinating, eye-opening, educating RED FLAG that should be required reading in junior and high school curriculums world-wide.

    5 out of 5 stars balance Point.......2001-12-13

Balance Point is a fantastic read! An eye opening book with adventure and of ecological importance. I for one would recomend it to all high schools as a must read with a strong discussion following. The publication opens the mind, drawing the reader to desire to go further.

      Book Description

This book focuses on how to handle missing data in longitudinal studies, offering specific coverage of models for longitudinal data, missing data mechanisms, and various approaches to sensitivity analysis. It presents an overview of state-of-the-art methods for dealing with missing data, with particular emphasis on handling dropout and causal inference. Many examples, case studies, and applications from the medical sciences support the discussions. The authors use WinBUGS and R to execute the methods and provide datasets and code for download from the Internet. This book stands apart by virtue of the authors' Bayesian approach to inference along with their emphasis on missing data.
