Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Angel Fire East marks the close of Terry Brooks's Nest Freemark-John Ross saga, which began with 1997's Running with the Demon. After a long layover in Seattle for the middle book, Knight of the Word, the fantasy-meets-modernity action returns to Nest's native Hopewell, where once again Nest and John must face off against the Void, this time in the form of ancient demon Findo Gask, who favors a black-clad evil preacher getup for his menacing needs.

Brooks's well-realized and likable cast from the previous books is back, from Nest (now 29) to Ross (haggard as ever) to Pick (still just a few inches tall) and even grown-up versions of Nest's childhood friends from Running, including Bennett, now a junkie with child. Of course, Findo Gask has assembled a creepy little Legion of Doom to harry these nice folks: a giant albino demon; a formless, flesh-eating ur'droch; and a knife-wielding Orphan-Annie-gone-bad named Penny Dreadful. And Angel Fire's main plot thread is even compelling: John Ross has caught a shape-changing, wild-magic creature of enormous power, a gypsy morph, that he and Nest must discover how to turn to the Word before Gask and his crew can capture it for the Void.

But as with Knight of the Word, wooden pacing and unconvincing transitions keep this tale from rising to the level of Brooks's previous masterworks, such as the excellent Shannara and Landover series. If you've read the first two books, it's certainly worth seeing off your old friends in Angel Fire East. But if you're--heaven forbid--new to Terry Brooks, check out his earlier work, or even his very capable novelization of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. --Paul Hughes

Book Description

When Running with the Demon appeared two years ago, it was recognized at once as a masterpiece in the making, a bold departure that promised to revitalize contemporary urban fantasy and showcase Terry Brooks's vast storytelling gifts as never before. The second book of the series, A Knight of the Word, raised expectations even higher. Now, in Angel Fire East, sure to be hailed as his most ambitious, most accomplished work yet, Terry Brooks brings his bestselling epic trilogy of good and evil to an unforgettable close.

As a Knight of the Word, John Ross has struggled against the tireless dark forces of the Void for twenty-five years. A rootless wanderer scarred as deeply by the magic he wields as by the unspeakable horrors he has witnessed in its service, Ross is driven by dreams that show the world reduced to blood and ashes by the Void and its minions. The grim futures he dreams each night will come true unless he can stop them now, in the present. But for all his power, John Ross is only one man, while the demons he hunts--and which hunt him in turn--are legion.

Then Ross learns of the birth of a gypsy morph, a rare and dangerous creature formed of wild magics spontaneously knit together. If he can discover its secret, the morph could be an invaluable weapon against the Void. But the Void, too, knows the value of the morph, and will not rest until the creature has been corrupted--or destroyed.

Desperate, Ross returns to the town of Hopewell, Illinois, home of Nest Freemark, a young woman with magical abilities of her own. Twice before, with the fate of the world hanging in the balance, the lives of Ross and Nest have intersected. Together, they have prevailed.

But now they face an ancient evil beyond anything they have ever encountered, for a demon of ruthless intelligence and feral cunning awaits them in Hopewell. As a firestorm of good and evil erupts, threatening to consume lives and shatter dreams, Ross and Nest have but a single chance to solve the mystery of the gypsy morph--and of their own profound connection.

Yet more time has passed. Nest is back in Hopewell, having been an Olympic athlete, and John Ross grows ever more tired. They must end up working to stop a demonic preacher, and a dangerous magical source from doing bad things to small town Hopewell and the rest of the world.

Both John and Nest must struggle with the problems their own powers causes, as well as working out how to fight their opponents.

5 out of 5 stars Best Terry Brook's Trilogy........2007-06-09

I disagree with the Editorial Reviews. In my opinion this is the best Terry Brook's trilogy. I own and have read all of the Shannara books, and
this trilogy is superior. For me, all of the books in the trilogy were true "page-turners". I found it very difficult to put them down. I love to read just before bed, and many a night I would promise myself I could read only one chapter and then find an hour later I was still reading. I really cared for the characters - wishing I could spend time with them. The mood, the suspense, the settings - everything was perfect.

3 out of 5 stars Characters a Bit Slow.......2007-06-03

Nest has magic in her. She's come to terms with that over her lifetime and now, in her late twenties, accepts it. She also accepts the fact that she is destined to lead a quiet life in the small town where her family has always lived. She will act as guardian over the nearby forest and try to keep her magic in check. This winter will be just one of many boring seasons by herself.

Then a nasty demon shows up at her door, asking about a man Nest knew years and years ago, a Knight of the Word named John Ross. The demon seems to think that John is headed for Nest's house, and he warns her that if she tries to help him or hide him, very bad things will happen.

Soon Nest's house is filled not only with John Ross and a strange magical and powerful creature called a gypsy morph in the form of a small boy, but also an old friend who has come upon hard times and her little girl.

The demon and his footsoldiers are all around them, though, making trouble and putting everyone in danger. Nest can't throw John and the boy out--if they can get the boy to communicate with them, they will have a powerful weapon in the ongoig fight against the demons of the Void. But time is running out for all of them.

I liked that even though this book was the third in a series, I felt like I could pretty well pick up on what was going on without having read the two previous books. I also liked that although this book was science fiction, it took place in a pretty normal town where nobody knew that magic existed.

The characters were really clueless. Nest should have had some idea of what was going on with Larry, and Gask should have been able to figure out what form the gypsy morph had taken. Everyone was a bit too slow to figure things out.

5 out of 5 stars Once again we are in GOOD hands with this last installment of the Word/Void.......2007-05-01

It took me quite a long time to even get the courage to purchase Running With The Demon. I believe it had been out in paperback at least a year before I got around to it. I was a fan of Shannara--and that was ALL. I had already ignored his Landover series from day one (and still haven't read them--although one day I will) but this one seemed different. The idea of a contemporary fantasy story set in the REAL world was fascinating and the loosely based similarities to the Harry Potter series is about as far off the mark as comparing the Lord of the Rings to Star Wars.

I am quite impressed overall with the entire series, and with Angel Fire East in particular. The character of Findo Gask is at once one of Brooks' more demonic creations, but in a totally different manner than anthing set before. Sure he has given us some truly horrible creatures over the years, but Findo is much more evolved than the others...and consequently is much more intelligent and cunning, and therefore almost real in how he can make your skin crawl. I loved the pacing of the story and how it all unfolded so meticulously. It almost seems as though each and every person introduced is treated as though they were the main focus of the story, and that secondary characters simply did not exist.

I have also noticed that no matter how much I enjoyed or hated a novel, there are ALWAYS those who feel as opposite from the way I do as is possible, and therefore discount my opinion of the book I reviewed. I never feel the need to preach about how if I liked any particular book that the world HAS to like it as well...and so I won't here as well. What I WOULD like to say is this: chances are if you liked Running With The Demon and A Knight Of The Word, you will more than enjoy Angel Fire East. Personally I felt it was one of the more satisfying stories Terry Brooks has ever written. He is right now in the middle of bridging the storylines of the Word and Void to Shannara with Armageddon's Children and the upcoming Elves of Cintra. Once again, I cannot WAIT to buy and read them as well...and who knows, while waiting for the last book, I may finally pick up that first Landover book that came out so long ago and give it a go...

Book Description

Alice Verney is a young woman intent on achieving her dreams. Having left Restoration England in the midst of a messy scandal, she has been living in Louis XIV’s Baroque, mannered France for two years. Now she is returning home to England and anxious to re-establish herself quickly. First, she will regain her former position as a maid of honor to Charles II’s queen. Then she will marry the most celebrated duke of the Restoration, putting herself in a position to attain power she’s only dreamed of. As a duchess, Alice will be able to make or break her friends and enemies at will.

But all is not as it seems in the rowdy, merry court of Charles II. Since the Restoration, old political alliances have frayed, and there are whispers that the king is moving to divorce his barren queen, who some wouldn’t mind seeing dead. But Alice, loyal only to a select few, is devoted to the queen, and so sets out to discover who might be making sinister plans, and if her own father is one of them. When a member of the royal family dies unexpectedly, and poison is suspected, the stakes are raised. Alice steps up her efforts to find out who is and isn’t true to the queen, learns of shocking betrayals throughout court, and meets a man that she may be falling in love with—and who will spoil all of her plans. With the suspected arrival of a known poison-maker, the atmosphere in the court electrifies, and suddenly the safety of the king himself seems uncertain. Secret plots are at play, and war is on the horizon—but will it be with the Dutch or the French? And has King Charles himself betrayed his country for greed?

The long-awaited prequel to Koen’s beloved Through a Glass Darkly, Dark Angels is a feast of a novel that sparkles with all the passion, extravagance, danger, and scandal of seventeenth-century England. Unforgettable in its dramatic force, here is a novel of love and politics, of romance and betrayal, of power and succession—and of a resourceful young woman who risks everything for pride and status in an era in which women were afforded little of either.

4 out of 5 stars A decent read, not what i expected though.......2007-08-16

This book tells the story of Alice Verney, Barbara Alderlys grandother, and the Duchess of Tamsworth. I was truly expecting a story of romance between Alice and Richard, who she would later marry. Those of you looking for that story, its here, but way towards the end and not really the central focus of the book.

The book starts about 10 years into the reign of Charles, known to history as the Merry Monarch for his many mistresses and children(none of them by his queen, Catharine of Branganza).

After many years apart, the king's sister is returning to England for a visit. She is married to a Prince of France, and while there are children from the marriage, it is known that the princesse is not happy, nor is here husband. When she returns to France, she dies suddenly. Alice, one of her ladies in waiting, is determined to finds out 1.) who killed her and 2) Who is now threatining her new mistress, Catherine of Bragnza.

Throughout the book, there are plots against the queen, plots for the queens, plots, to marry. Also bits and pieces mixed in about a spy from the french court, who is reluctant.

Alice, while at times stubborn and arrogantly sure she knows whats best for her friends, is likable, but almost a different person then the one we meet in TAGD. Although this is to be expected. After all, in DA, she hasnt gone through the hardships of losing her entire family just yet. So, she's a young girl here, with a young girl's attitude and assurance in herself.

There's no way i could possibly list everything here that goes on. It is shorter then its two predessors, but still worth the read.

The only thing i didn't like, was not enough Richard and Alice together!

2 out of 5 stars Very disappointing.......2007-07-28

I had to force myself to finish this book in order to feel qualified to review it. Koen's other book, "Through a Glass Darkly" is one of my favorite historical novels, and I probably read it once a year. This one, however, is just not enjoyable. After I had read 1/3 of it, I still felt no connection to Alice, the main character. The writing was very disjointed, and it was very hard to tell who was talking or being talked about a lot of the time. I loved the character of Alice as the grandmother in "Through a Glass Darkly", and I was really looking forward to reading about her younger life. The Alice in "Dark Angels" did not mesh with the character as I knew her in the other book, and I wish I had never read this one. Very very disappointing.

2 out of 5 stars THERE ARE NO ANGELS HERE, DARK OR OTHERWISE........2007-07-23

Welcome to the court of Charles II, hotbed of corruption, both political and moral. Enter Alice Verney, who aspires to a command a position of power within the court and seeks to attain her goal by marrying the aging Duke of Balmoral. Longstanding friendships are threatened by Alice's quest as well as her unequivocal need to control not only her own life but also the lives of those around her.

Alice is an unconventional heroine in the respect that she has always had money and been accustomed to the finer things. Unlike the "up from the gutter and into the glitter" characters that usually make their appearance in these historical sagas, Alice is initially not a very likable character. She is manipulative and deceitful, but does manage to present the reader with a colorful portrait of a woman of her era.

The author manages to evoke the flavor of the 17th century and capture of the Restoration-era mindset with its brazen women and conspiratorial men. Most of the characters in this narrative quagmire subscribe to the theory that their machinations and schemes are a necessary by-product of success and that "life isn't filled with easy choices and we all get our hands dirty from time to time". Personally, there is only one character in this entire novel that I would be inclined to trust with my life.

Finally, let me say that the book ends on a somewhat unfulfilling note. Two of the characters, Henri Ange the poison-maker, and Walter the young stable hand disappear from the pages without a resolution to their stories. Guess I am one of those readers who wants all loose ends neatly tied up with a big red bow. 2 1/2 STARS.

4 out of 5 stars Welcome to the Restoration: Decadence, romance, intrigue and deception .......2007-06-08

Is there a more fascinating time or place than the court of King Charles II? I cannot think of one, and Karleen Koen lends her pen to bring it alive in "Dark Angels".

Koen has a knack for hooking the reader early on with hints and promises, and interesting characters. She writes romantic heroes, heroines and villains extremely well, as readers of "Through a Glass Darkly" know. I flew through the pages and loved the characters, costumes and themes centering on the struggles between love and greed or jealousy, forgiveness and revenge, and strategic scheming and surprise. Koen transports you to the decadent Courts of the Sun King (Louis XIV of France & creator of Versailles) and Charles II of England, and drapes you in damask, jewels and lace, and on the next page sends you to seedy brothels and privy court chambers for some debauchery, drunkeness and gambling. Regicide, religious wars, royal gossip and exploits, romance and gold digging rule the day. It is delicious fun!

The real story of "Dark Angles" introduces us to Alice Verney who is first a young Maid of Honor to Princess Henrietta Anne of France (sister to Charles II of England) and then a not-so-young Maid of Honor to the shunned Queen Catherine in England. She's had her heart broken in love and loyalty through the betrayals of a friend and lover, and the murder of Madame, Princess Henrietta. Alice puts up a condescending, stand-offish front in an attempt to protect herself and others, and finds that such a barrier isolates us from those we love, rather than keep them close. She is sassy, spoiled, scheming and sophisticated, and yet disillusioned by life at court. We see an early glimpse of the life lessons that shaped the loving, accepting and wise grandmother we met in "Through a Glass Darkly".

Koen brings alive the sexual charge of the time through accurate presentations of its rogues from the well documented exploits of Kings Charles II of England and Louis XIV of France to the English Earl of Rochester and Sir John Sedely who drunkenly bumble and grope their way through the background of this book. It was a drunken, decadent time of debauchery and hedonism, and great fun to re-live through books such as this, "The King's Touch", "The Perfect Royal Mistress", "Duchess: A novel of Sarah Churchill" or even "Forever Amber" (I am not a huge fan, but many others are).

I gave this book a "4 star" rating because it is just simply an intriguing, fast, fun escape read, but it does have its flaws. The main draw back is that Koen seems confused as to whether she wanted to write a "whodunnit?", a romance or a fantastic period novel. She delivers pieces of all three, and that leaves fans with genre preferences feeling disappointed. The good news is that this novel seems ripe for a sequel (or two!) to fill the time between its end and the beginning of her stellar debut, Through A Glass Darkly. I love the promise of more to come... I only hope the wait is short!

3 out of 5 stars Hugely dissappointing.........2007-05-25

I loved Koen's other works. However, this book fell flat. There was really no intense character development nor was I given alot of reasons to root for Alice. Barbara's end was obvious. In fact, the entire book was pretty obvious to an avid reader of historical fiction. I could've guessed the entire plot in the first 100 pages.

Book Description

The saga of Dark Angel continues!

Someone is killing normal humans in the fog-enshrouded city of Seattle. The murders are brutal and grisly, but inside Terminal City they barely cause a ripple of concern. The transgenics who live there have problems of their own. In an area under siege by the oppressive arm of the police, the transgenics must protect their fledgling colony against the outside world—a world that eyes them with contempt and suspicion . . . and will do anything to be rid of them.

As the killings escalate, Joshua comes to Max with a dire suspicion: the killer may be one of their own. Tensions are high between normal humans and transgenics, and many inside the protected City would just as soon let the humans fend for themselves. Yet Max and her inner circle know they must investigate the crimes and stop the bloodshed. Doing nothing would simply give the normals more reasons to hate.

But what they discover will shock even the most jaded among them—and expose a sinister agenda that leads to an old, nefarious foe. . . .

One of Manticore's less successful experiments, and a nice joke 'Chameleon Boy', has become a serial killer. Evil and twisted Ames White ends up behind it. The Freak Nation has to investigate the case before the army moves in on them, after White's media manipulation.

Thanks to a decent cop, and two ex-subordinates of White's who dislike him about as much as everybody else, more, in their cases, as he was trying to get them bumped off--Max manages to work it out, but not without casualties and kidnappings.

All in all, a decent handling of the characters, again.

It's a great book. The way Max Allan Collins managed to get the character's personalities just right is amazing. My only complaint is that Alec should have been a little more of a Smart Alec. But it's still a great book. You should definitely read if you watched the television series.

Max Guevera, mayor? Seems unlikely, but the defactor head of Terminal City is what she has become, it appears. She is also a big fan of Jonathon Swift.

Things start looking up, as the serial killer in the last episode, a shapeshifter, actually ended up taking out Logan's virus.

However, a gang then kidnaps Logan, and things go crazy.

It seems that the problem with centuries-spanning breeding cults, is, well, that they are a cult. Made up of people. With politics, power plays, etc.

The transgenics do not have this issue, and are able to use factional splits, and even Ames White, via his missing son, to cause a lot of problems for the Familiars.

Freaky prophecies about comets bringing death plagues are perhaps not too likely, either, they should keep in mind for the future.

A fun book.

It was so nice to finally have an ending to the Dark Angel series. I was so disappointed with the cliff-hanger ending of the second season. Many questions were answered and storylines finished in this book and yet it still left things open for Max Allan Collins to continue the book series if he wants. I, for one, hope he continues writing for this series.

3 out of 5 stars Action with Thin Substance.......2007-09-05

Let me preface this by stating I have never seen an episode of the T.V. series, (or movies, if any) and am judging the book solely on it's own merits.

This book follows Max, and to a small extent Seth, soldiers from an illegal government super soldier program called Manticore. They escaped while extremely young after their handlers shot and killed one of their classmates, showing that weren't stupid and could the writing on the wall. The author takes this too far, referring at times to both Max and Seth in the novel as "the X5" which serves to dehumanize them in the mind's eye of the reader. Dehumanizing the hero isn't a great idea, since the story suffers if the reader doesn't care about the protagonist's fate.

Pacing is fast but not overwhelming. Setting is not well explained (As in electronics were supposedly fried, what about those shielded or repairable?) since I thought the degeneration of the USA caused by the Pulse event was simply glossed over. Characterization is not very deep, but typical for an action novel. I don't really understand why Max didn't have her barcode tattoo laser-surgery erased, and how she hides her 'cat's eyes' which the author gave me the impression of not looking like normal human eyes. I did think the dialogue had it's witty moments, but I also thought Max's vocabulary didn't match her upbringing.

On it's own as a novel, this was a quick fluffy read that broke down if you thought about it too much. I give this type of book three stars and recommend better novels. Maybe it was written only for fans of the series?

2 out of 5 stars Quite Disappointing.......2007-08-27

This book does not do justice to this series, which is saying quite a bit, given how quickly the show met its demise. First of all, there are many inconsistencies between the book and the series. Facts just don't match up. Second, there is pointless and frequent profanity. Come on, this was a TV show, not an R rated movie. Kids who could handle the series shouldn't go near this book. Third, the editing is lousy. At times, even names were spelled incorrectly.

Overall, the story isn't bad. It's entertaining and a quick read. If it was just another book, the rating would be at least a three. But given the way it fails to mesh with the series, I can't give it anything besides a 2.

4 out of 5 stars Super Reader.......2007-08-07

A nice solid prequel story, detailing how Max gets to Seattle, meets Original Cindy, and Lydecker learns that she may be there, along with learning what Logan is up to, and why.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting.......2007-06-15

This book lets you know what happened before the TV show. It helps set the stage but you need not read it.

2 out of 5 stars WARNING.......2007-05-12

I enjoyed the story of this book very much, but was very disappointed with all the profanity in it. I know the show used swearing a good bit, but this was excessive and foul.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT READ!.......2007-06-23

I love Karen Harper. She provides a great story and wonderful character interaction...she is also one of the few authors I can safely give to my mom to read. :) Although the amish stories have not been my favorite, I loved this one. It was fantastic and the storyline gets you from the first!!

5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2007-05-31

This book was very hard to put down after awhile. The Amish location made it more interesting. Would recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Dark Angel.......2007-01-15

Kepted me on the edge of my seat the whole time. Was really hard to put down.

4 out of 5 stars A spooky suspense,love and science story.......2006-06-29

This book is set in Amish country and features a young Amish woman and an outsider, Englisher research doctor. Amish children have been dying from a genetically related disease and even some adults have been sickly, carriers and even died. The doctor moved to the area to study the diseases, find the gene that causes them, and hopefully help with finding a cure.

Spooky things start happening. Threats to the doctor and his helpers, kidnappings, killings and mysterious disappearances.

The book contains much mystery and lesser amts of a love story, but it is powerful enough to make the reader feel the pull to finish the book and see what happens.

This is one of a three book series by this author.

3 out of 5 stars Not too bad..........2005-06-16

I DID enjoy this book, and I really loved the characters. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good mystery mixed with a little romance.

One thing that really annoyed me, however, was that this book kept referring to one of the characters from the first two books in this series as "Brett" (should be Brooke). If you've read the first two books, you probably caught this right away, too. I certainly didn't forget the characters names. How did the author???

This is a place where self-discovery involves scalpels and horse tranquilizers; where the doctors are more doped-up than the patients; where obsessive-compulsive acid-freaks have unlocked the gateway to God and can't close the door.

4 out of 5 stars Makes a great Christmas present.......2007-10-08

My brother gave me a copy of this book last Christmas. I had never heard of Johnson, but gave it the once over. I quickly discovered that Johnson is one sick puppy, but he's also an excellent writer. I've read plenty of work by people who are purely pushing stuff out for shock value, and Johnson definitely rises far above them. Mainly this is because, while most of his stories have some sick and twisted ideas at their core, he doesn't depend soley on them. His skills as a writer and as a storyteller turn those dark seeds, into great stories that are quite enjoyable, in a queasy sort of way. He never seems to forget that the people in his stories, however perverse, insane, or just screwed up they are, are still people, even if they do go around bitting other people's noses off.

4 out of 5 stars Smart, hip, fun to read!.......2007-10-04

This is a great short story collection. I enjoyed all of the stories for different reasons. The writing style is crisp and vivid, the story ideas are original and fresh and the book was thematically dark and beautiful. I will definitely look for more work by this author.

4 out of 5 stars Flesh, sex, drugs...and some swimming........2007-09-01

A nice collection of (mostly)weird stories. Here's a quick rundown of each one.

"The League of Zeroes" Interesting take on the future of body modifications and the implications of the extreme desire to be a trendsetter.

"Dissociative Skills" Graphic tale of teenager body exploration.. reminiscent of Chuck Palahniuk's work.

"Amniotic Shock in the Last Sacred Place" Interesting take on adult infantilism. The gruesome process of malformed birth..and birth and birth.

"Precedents" The author (in his afterword) makes mention of the similarities between this story and movies like Memento and Irreversible. He also compares it to the classic locked door murder mysteries. Yes, this short tale is like that (told backwards..) but compared to the preceding stories, it's not that impressive.

"Stanley's Lips" Very short piece about a person's obsession with something they detest. Definitely relatable.. at least for me.

"Snowfall" Picturesque post-nuclear apocalypse story through the eyes of a deaf child. Very nice.

"Ex-Hale" Funny story about a professional "corpse" actor. Excellent.

"Working at Home" Parasite-ridden bio-horror tale in the style of David Cronenberg. Good imagery and suspense.

"Priapism" Weird story of a father talking about masturbation and punishing him for it. Will probably shock the casual reader. Kind of reminded me of a Chuck Palahniuk story.

"Luminary" Sort of like an Amazing Stories or Twilight Zone tale. Nice but I'd rate this lower compared to the other stories.

"Saturn's Game" Pretty crazy tale of mental illness and the ramifications of child abuse.

"Branded" Very short story about brand names and oral sex.

"The Sharp Dressed Man at the End of the Line" This is the story that leads up to his novella Extinction Journals. Basically concerning WWIII, nuclear war, and a suit made of cockroaches. Oh, and a suit made of twinkies. Guess who survives?

"Two Cages, One Moon" A kidnapping tale with an ironic twist. Still, not that unique especially compared to the rest of the stories (many which are in the bizarre genre). If I read this one in a magazine, I'd probably be more impressed but I've read similar stories before.

"Sparklers Burning" A bizarre burn on Martha Stewart and the arts/crafts thing. Interesting imagery but lacks a certain OOMPH!

"Last Thoughts Drifting Down" A short piece of WWIII through the eyes of (I think) death or nuclear death or something.

"Swimming in the House of the Sea" A pretty straightforward tale of a young guy and his mentally challenged brother. Though it is not weird at all, this is a solid story. Again, I'd say this would appeal to Palahniuk fans. The description is excellent and I'd like to see JRJ tackle more stories taking place in motels in the desert. He handles detail wonderfully. And I like motels. And deserts.

"Wall of Sound" A three part story in the style of Hubert Selby. Drug-addled narrative of raves (and all sorts of electronic music), neo-Nazi sabotage, and mental & physical deterioration. The first part is especially frightening. I was never a big drug user but I always found the idea of buying drugs scary considering you don't exactly know what you're getting. Just imagine this situation at its worst and that's what the first part contains. Excellent stuff. It closes the collection beautifully.

In conclusion, I liked the more bizarre material in this collection the best. There were a few stories that I felt were out of place but perhaps for purposes of pacing, the author felt the need to include them. Still, this is a satisfactory book of short stories that'll impress anyone who enjoys cutting edge takes on drugs, body modification, medical horrors, and the end of the world.

    5 out of 5 stars Dire Playfulness.......2007-07-12

Flicking between beautiful, unsettling, funny, and downright weird (sometimes all of those plus a whole lot more), this is a great collection of memorable (as in "I ate something odd and it was tasty but now it's sticking to my insides and sort of hurting but in a nice way") short stories.

Whilst some are not for the squeamish ("Dissociative Skills" immediately springs to mind, as does "League of Zeroes"), I myself don't have an aversion to the sort of Cronenbergian fascination of playing with flesh. "The League of Zeroes" has that dire playfulness about it, the sick concept of outer beauty is twisted back upon itself, and there's a ridiculous sympathy that goes along with that.

Maybe it's just me, but I really enjoyed that there was a childlike quality to the stories, which is NOT to say they are childish. There's a big difference between those two words. There's an innocent, curious, innovative, uncensoring quality in each story, which I always appreciate in adult fiction.

My favourite stories: Hard to pick, I didn't dislike any of them (a pleasant surprise, for I am picky), but I'll go with "Snowfall" and "The Sharp Dressed Man At the End of the Line". Superb. The latter had me in stitches for a very long time, and even still giggle when I recall it.

    5 out of 5 stars 100 Percent Palahniuk approved.......2007-07-04

Like skim milk draped about your hysterectomy, Mr. Johnson hugs the womb with piercings big enough to kill a horse. The brain metal jewelry transposes sharp enough to have your lobotomy on, and you will enjoy each sliding inch of the stiletto. Put your ten into the g-string of a Bizarro god. Throw the book at a school bus and its occupants will croak. Shoot the fine art of its cover and send the bullet back into the gun barrel. Hide it in a corner and your tears always leak in that direction.

    5 out of 5 stars Heartbreaking..........2006-11-17

This is the last book VC herself completed before her death, and the best one, in my opinion. She gave it her all and the result is a book you'll want to read over and over again. It's also a book that, if you read it only once in your life, you'll never forget it. I felt actual pain reading this very sad book.

The story picks up where "Heaven" left off. Heaven has arrived at the Boston Airport and her mother's family is there to meet her and take her back to their mansion. There she encounters secrets and oddities; she'll be forced to grow up quickly in an all-girls' school and prove her worth; she'll also discover a mysterious cottage where a dreamy artist, Troy, brings out passion in her like she's never known before. Sadly, though, this will be a short, tragic love.

There are some shockers in this book and Heaven will be forced to make some tough choices: Does she cut off the Casteel clan for good or reunite her childhood family? Does she leave Winnerrow behind or go back to it? Does she want to know the truth or live in a fantasy world? What happens to the love of her life (Troy), and with Logan? Does she make peace with Luke, or remain bitter toward him?

I agree with the person who said this series should've ended here. The books that follow in this series are inconsistent in plots and details and confuse the reader. But read "Heaven" and "Dark Angel", and you won't be disappointed.

    4 out of 5 stars Dark Angel.......2006-08-01

The book Dark Angel is the sequel to V.C. Andrews book Heaven. In Dark Angel a girl named Heaven leaves her home in a poor town in the mountains of West Virginia, the Willies, to live with her grandmother in Boston. In this book Heaven is now 17 and she wants to go to college. But inorder to do that she must get her rich grandmother to like her enough in order for her to get money to go. But her plane to get the cash starts to unravel when she finds her grandmother isn't excactly someone who cares for people too much.
Well I had to read a book written by a Virginia author and I chose this one because of the great reveiws it had gotten. Mainly girls will like this book because Heaven is in a stage in her life in which all girls will have to go through.
The books plot was mostly about Heaven trying to get money for college so she can go and be the first Casteel to get into college. The descriptions of each character gave you a very clear image of each the person. Their expressions, movements, and physical features gave each charcter their own personality. The theme of the story was a rages to riches kinda of thing. Where Heaven moves from a run down shack in the Willies to a masion in the rich part of Boston. The whole story is told in Heaven's words so its her on oppinion on her new life, not a narrator's which is good. I enjoyed the book alot, every time I read a page I just wanted to see what happens in the next one.

4 out of 5 stars This is a good book........2005-11-18

This book is called Dark Angel by V.C Andrews. The plot of the story is a girl named Heaven whose father sold her for 500 dollars and then went to her rich grandparents. The main idea of this book is to love your family even if they do not seem to love you, because you might not see them again.

An example of this would be when Heavens little brother and sister don't remember her (they were sold to another family for 500 dollars by her pa.) Another is when Heaven was going to marry Troy and could not because she finds out Troy is really her uncle.

In this book it may seem that many bad things happen, but there are also some good things, such as when Heaven arrived at her grandparents' rich house. Also, when Heaven's grandpa fixed the cabin she was born and raised in.

I would recommend this book because it is filled with mystery and secrets. It also has a lot of drama.

5 out of 5 stars You'll Fall In Love with Heaven.......2005-09-15

This is my favorite VCA book ever. The romance between Troy and Heaven is just so passionate, and perfectly counters the one that she has with Logan which is just so sweet.

    3 out of 5 stars Unsolved mysteries.......2005-07-07

Why,oh, why didn't Heaven ever confront Luke with the truth? I would have loved to hear his reasonings on why he never told Heaven that he wasn't her father. If Heaven had any doubts about Tony's allegations, why didn't she just ask Luke?
