Book Description

Larry. Bob. Archibald. These Veggie Tales stars are the most famous vegetables you'll ever eat. Oops, meet. Their antics are known around the world. But so much of the Veggie Tale story hasn't been told. In Me, Myself, and Bob, Phil Vischer, founder of Big Idea and creator of Veggie Tales, gives a behind-the-scenes look at his not-so-funny journey with the loveable veggies. From famed creator to bankrupt dreamer, Vischer shares his story of trial and ultimate triumph as God inspired him with one big idea after another.

5 out of 5 stars Life Changing***.......2007-08-01

I guess it is a phrase that is overly used - "life changing". But I truly find Phil's aftermath with God life changing. I learned more in this book than reading tens of theology books. No wonder Jesus often use real life examples to teach his audience.

Every time when I feel like to have to make a mark on this world, I need to re-read the last few chapters of this book. Wow, the Lord really uses this book to change my life.

5 out of 5 stars When life gives you tomatoes, make tomatoe juice.......2007-07-20

With humility and grace that is not something you always find in business men, Phil takes you on the journey from conception, to the unfortunate ending of an empire. He does it in such a way you can still walk away from the book with a smile though because you know that God is not done with Phil yet, not by a long shot.

Much as Veggie Tales pushed the animation edge and proved amazingly successful, his new projects should be just as inspiring and enrapturing of the imagination.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is in Christian Business because it is a good "what to do" and "what not to do" book. You will learn from his painful mistakes, and learn how to make a great business that is bult to last.

4 out of 5 stars An interesting read!.......2007-07-08

For those lovers of Veggie Tales it is fascinating to read what was going on behind the scenes. An intriguing look at the world of animation in the nineties.

5 out of 5 stars Veggie Stew.......2007-07-08

Talk about getting yourself into a pickle! Phil Vischer, the creative mastermind behind the wildly successful VeggieTales, gives us an inside look at the slicing and dicing of his dream.

"Me, Myself, & Bob" has the trademarks of many a good autobiography: honesty, self-assessment without self-pity, and questions that resonate with us all. From humble Midwest beginnings, to the enchantments of Walt Disney, to the not-so-innocent offerings of MTV, Phil gives us peeks into his isolated childhood and his desire to do something great for God. His parents' divorce drove him deeper into a shell, where he thrived on exploring film and animation. These gifts led him through trials and struggles, but eventually to the formation of a studio which would break sales records and become a household name to many.

The success was proof of God's blessing, wasn't it? In the name of American Christianity, wouldn't it be even more godly to make things bigger and better--a Christian rival to the "valueless" entertainment from Disney?

The story of VeggieTales rise and fall is sobering, full of lessons for all who think they have a "vision." Phil Vischer challenges this way of thinking, presenting his own life as a cautionary tale. He does so with humor, humility, and final thoughts on what it means to truly receive and follow revelation from God. After the stew he got himself into, Phil shows he has learned to serve a God larger and yet much more intimate than the idols of wealth and success. The story reads quickly, but the concepts here are ones to use for a lifetime.

5 out of 5 stars Has he got a story for you!.......2007-07-05

By the mere cover of this book, I wasn't sure whether to expect outright hilarity on every page, or something a little more. It turns out I got more than I bargained for, and the lessons are imperitive, at least in the Christian walk of life. Hey, I did find myself laughing out loud in lots of different places in this. But I also found myself amazed at the humility that Phil Vischer allowed himself. He basically held nothing back! In parts, this was like walking into a theme park, with all the attractions you ever dreamed of. Then in others, it was like going into an operating room to watch open heart surgery, only to stand there and say nothing as the chest cavity is ripped open to examine the heart. Yeah, I think this was something special, as well as something personal.

I loved the chapters about Phil's fascination with technology, with cameras, with anything to do with changing the world of childrens' entertainment! When I read about him getting kicked out of Bible college, he sounded like my kind of guy. Phil had a dream, and he wanted to be like Walt Disney. And you get all kinds of great stories, including how he met Mike Nawrocki, voice of Larry the Cucumber. It tells of a dream, a dream God had given him. It tells of the great rise of Big Idea...and then some! And he talks a little bit about some of the episodes, some of his ideas. You feel the exhaustion of how it felt to finally finish the first Veggie Tales episode, "Where's God When I'm S-scared?" You feel the pressure from up on top, when it should be you that should be on top. But as lots of stories go, along with the great laughs, come a few humble tears.

There are lessons involved, and one of the final chapters in this is dedicated to "What have we learned?" The chapter is simply entitled, "Lessons." I think one of the key lessons is to take the dreams we call "OUR DREAMS," and give them to God. Then when and if they become GOD'S DREAMS, it might make more sense. There are parts in here that are gut wrenchers! Sometimes you just have to die to self and give in over to God. WOW! So, if you picked this up in anticipation of, "Silly Songs With Larry," or even "Somber Moments With Bob," for a simple laugh, you've probably come to the wrong place. If you're looking for honesty, for somebody to tug at the stitches once the incision has been closed, as well as a little humor added here and there, then check it out! Get ready for a life lesson or two. Bob is always the first to announce, "Have we got a show for you!" at the beginning of every Veggie Tales episode. Well, Bob's still clearly in the picture. But it happens to be Phil's story. And has he got a story for you!

5 out of 5 stars Feast of Prayers.......2007-10-03

Talking to God: Portrait of a World at Prayer, by John Gattuso, Editor, Stone Creek Publications, 2006, Illustrated. Forward and introduction by the distinguished, Huston Smith, and religion writer and reviewer Phyllis Tickle.

Some people go to church on Sunday / Kneel and pray / Well I say God bless them / If they can go that way / But me I have to wait / Until the sun goes down / Go to my holy shack / Out on the edge of town. - Joziah Longo, singer-songwriter and guitarist.

Whatever religious tradition or individual observance resonates with you, you will find this book arresting, illuminating, informative and inspirational. The book is arranged in four sections "Every Breath a Prayer," "Praise and Supplication," "The Still, Silent Moment," and "Reaching Out." Each section contains essays on prayer from the wolds leading spiritual minds all of whom have a complex relationship with prayer and wreste with the difficult questions, which can raise more questions than they answer, such as that of unanswered prayers. C. S. Lewis and Harold Kushner observe that prayer isn't magic or a gimmick we can use to get God on our side. "What the writers in this book are saying is that prayer works, but it works on us rather than for us. Prayer doesn't change God, it changes us," observes Gattuso.

Included among the essayists in Talking to God are Karen Armstrong, The Dalai Lama, Mohandas K. Gandhi, Thich Nhat Hanh, Jack Kornfield, Harold Kushner, C. S. Lewis, Thomas Merton, Thomas Moore, Seyyed Hossein Nasr, Kathleen Norris, Pope John Paul II, David Steindl-Rast, Desmond Tutu, Elie Wiesel, Michael Wolfe, and Carol Zaleski. There is a moving excerpt from Elie Weisel's Night, and the Navajo Blessing Way.

One hundred plus breathtaking photographs make this book a feast for the eyes, creating an album of individuals and groups from different cultures talking to God in their own ways: reciting prescribed words, meditating, singing, chanting, sacred dance, holy ritual, or simple mindfulness. Just looking at the photos is praying. When asked about forms of prayer, read or compose spontaneously, the editor replied:

Just because you're "saying prayers" doesn't mean you're actually praying. As Gandhi said, "It is better in prayer to have a heart without words than words without a heart." Brother David Steindl-Rast puts it another way. He says that some people experience their most prayerful moments precisely when they are not saying prayers--when they are watering their flowers, for example, or doing some other mundane chore. That's when they truly experience the sacred. If you look at it from that point of view, then just about anything can be prayer--song, dance, meditation, whatever. Ultimately, I think, the goal is to live as though you're whole life is a prayer. To live prayerfully or, as a Buddhist might say, to live mindfully.

Through many faiths and many voices, though we pray in different ways, we speak to God with the same intentions -- to connect or communicate with the sacred. Rational thought will only get us so far. Let me end with a Jewish Blessing For Caregivers:

May the One Who blessed our ancestors be present to those who provide help for the ill and troubled among us. May they be filled with the fortitude and courage, endowed with sympathy and compassion, as they give strength to those at their side. May they fight against despair, and continue to find within themselves the will to reach out to those in need. And in their love of others, may they know the blessing of community, and the blessing of renewed faith.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring Look at Prayer Around the World........2007-05-13

This book is not only has gorgeous photography but gives you an idea of how other religions worship the Creator. It was very inspiring to know we all have similar things we do, when worshiping and praying, but we go about it in different ways. The book points out differences in a beautiful way, focusing on the positive aspect of each religions unifying factor of praying & worshiping the Creator. I would feel totallyh comfortable giving this book to anyone of any faith because there is no negativity in it regarding faiths or the peoples depicted. Its a beautiful, gorgeous book and should be treasured as I do now. It is prominently displayed on my coffee table. Kudos to the Author. Definitely a 5 star book. Worth every penny I paid for it. It will probably end up being a classic.

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful compendium, compiled with respect toward all faiths and all efforts to humble oneself before the divine.......2006-09-14

Illustrated throughout with more than a hundred full-color photographs, Talking to God: Portrait of a World at Prayer is compilation of fifteen essays discussing the topic of prayer from the point of view of many faiths. Writings from authors including the Dalai Lama, Mohandas K. Gandhi, Thich Nhat Hanh, C. S. Lewis, Elie Wiesel, Pope John Paul II, and more allow the reader to contemplate the spirituality of opening oneself up to communication. Writings are brief, sometimes only a page, sometimes a handful of pages; Talking to God is a visual and reflective experience, rather than a lengthy academic or in-depth theological one. A beautiful compendium, compiled with respect toward all faiths and all efforts to humble oneself before the divine.

Book Description

After the publication of her best-selling book To Begin Again, Naomi Levy received a flood of feedback from readers telling her how much the prayers in it had helped and moved them. Many urged her to publish a collection of her prayers—and now she has.

In a time when we all need inspiration, comfort, and connection, Talking to God will help us reclaim prayer as an integral part of our lives, making it as natural and uninhibited as talking to our loved ones. Prayer is essential to the lives of millions, but many of us are searching for ways to supplement traditional prayers with ones that are less formal and more intimate.

Written in a simple and direct style, the prayers in this book—and the wonderful stories that accompany them—are for people of all faiths, and for all occasions large and small. Naomi Levy’s personal prayers address the anxieties and roadblocks we all face in contemporary life. There are prayers for facing a new day, realizing one’s potential at work, celebrating an anniversary or birthday, and going to sleep at night. And there are prayers for the more profound occurrences in life—love and marriage, pregnancy and childbirth, illness, loss, and death.

Rabbi Levy’s words, imbued with grace and empathy, touch on the entire range of human experience. Many of us will recognize ourselves in her prayers and stories and will be comforted by them, as well as challenged and uplifted. Perhaps most important, they are stepping-stones for us to go on and create our own prayers, to find meaning in our own lives, and to begin or renew our own relationships with God.

I bought this book during one of the most trying times of my life, after reading some of Rabbi Levy's prayers online. It is wonderful reading and great to have in your home for all life events.

Unquestionably one of my favorite books of prayer poetry. contemporary. contemplative. resonates with all ages. excellent readings when doing pastoral care with others or when just spending quiet time alone.

2 out of 5 stars Not very helpful.......2005-07-15

I did like the author's "organization"-use of categories, so one could access the "appropriate" prayer--However, the prayers themselves were for the most part uninspired and often repetitive. I was hoping to use this book as a source for opening prayers to start meetings at our synagogue, but only a few are "usable." I think I could write better prayers myself.

5 out of 5 stars I loved this book........2003-08-21

I am a Chaplain at a Children's Hospital, and I have found this book to be an extremely useful resource for working with parents.

5 out of 5 stars A woman who speaks from her heart.......2003-07-14

Rabbi Naomi Levy encourages the expression of personal prayers to God. This book is filled with her own prayer offerings on general subjects like birth, marriage, sexuality, divorce as well as specific subjects like "A Prayer for rekindling passion" and "A prayer during labor." The most fascinating parts of this book for me were Rabbi Levy's anecdotes--stories about her congregants faith issues and her own family life. Rabbi Levy talks about her own faltering faith in God when her father was murdered and when her daughter was diagnosed with disabilities. She writes with a deep sense of openness and compassion.

Rabbi Levy encourages us to write personal prayers that not only ask for help but also thank God. This practice furthers appreciation for the gifts in our life and in the world.

Product Description

Parents will help children identify the beauty and hope in all cycles of life as they follow two insect friends, Lea and Nym, and the struggles one of them endures when her friend disappears. This is a tender story about loss and change, written to help parents express their views about life and death. The book may serve many purposes, such as comforting a grieving child who has lost someone close or providing facts about dragonflies to inquisitive minds. Lea's transformation into a dragonfly may even be used as a metaphor for life-after-death. The Dragonfly Door is beautifully illustrated by award-winning artist Barbara L. Gibson. The book is cherished by parents, grandparents and teachers. It was recently brought to life as a mini-play in Alabama to help children cope with the loss of their classmates. The following is an excerpt from the book: While Nym slept, she heard Lea's voice saying, "Follow me, Nym. I'm going to show you where I am." "Will I see you again?" Nym asked. "Only when it's time for you to die too," Lea replied. "You won't see me in the marsh ever again. But let me show you what I will look like the next time you see me. Here, close your eyes." Nym closed her eyes. "Now look at me," Lea said. Nym opened her eyes and saw ...

The debut children's picturebook of author John Adams, The Dragonfly Door dares to confront serious topics - of loss, death, grieving, and transition. Nym and Lea are two close insect friends, but one day after Nym yells at Lea, Lea disappears. Nym searches everywhere for her missing friend, and can't find her. At last Nym falls asleep, grief-stricken, and finally hears Lea's voice one more time. "'I died and went to this special place,' Lea said, her voice full of love. 'But I didn't want you to leave,' Nym pleaded. 'I'm sorry I yelled.' 'I know you're sorry,' Lea assured her. 'I left because my water nymph body died while I was picking flowers in the reeds, not because you yelled.'" The warm, emotional colors of award-winning artist Barbara L. Gibson illustrate this highly recommended picturebook for sharing the bittersweet realities of life with young people.

5 out of 5 stars Jewel's Reading Excellence Review: Helps children understand nature's life cycle.......2007-05-10

John Adams brilliantly invites the reader into the world of Nymphs and Dragonflies to explore the changes that take place when Nym's friend goes to a special place.

When I had lost a family member I had read a wonderful story called, "The Water Bug Story." John Adams adds a fresh approach to this story by focusing on friendship loss and giving a voice to his characters. With the help of Gibson's eye-catching nature illustrations, "The Dragon Fly Door" answers general questions surrounding loss, such as feelings about loss, what happens to the nymph's body when he dies, and how a nymph is transformed into a dragonfly.

Adams creatively normalizes typical friendship rivalry and takes the reader on a nature journey to discover that one chooses to resolve conflict, loss, and changes in different ways. Adams concludes the book with uncomplicated educational facts for the inquisitive science mind.

This is a great educational tool for parents, grandparents or professionals to use to help explain the uncontrollable life cycle changes and loss.

5 out of 5 stars A Message of Hope for Children Who Are Grieving.......2007-02-26

As President of a nonprofit organization that reaches out to those who are grieving, I was very pleased to read a book such as The Dragonfly Door. This book provides a much needed way to offer children (and adults) a message of hope following the death of a loved one.

Children can relate to the playful nature of Nym and Lea who are the two young nymph friends, the sorrow of Nym when Lea dies, and the comforting feeling when when Nym realizes that he will one day see Lea again as a dragonfly, when he too has made his transformation into a dragonfly.

Our nonprofit organization recommends this book so highly that we have decided to make it available for purchase at all of our events.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and excellent for all who grieve.......2007-02-18

I received this wonderfully beautiful book on the 8th anniversary of my son's graduation to Heaven ... that evening, I was able to read it with his daughter, who is now 9... I believe she gained another understanding of her Very Own Daddy in a beautiful place that we have not seen just yet ... and though she already knew he is waiting for her, this was another good reminder of that ... I was unaware of the dragonfly's life cycle and was so blessed to see how it seemingly parallels this life and the next. Thank you, John, for a wonderful way to help us all in our continuing journey with grief and the Hope we can have.

5 out of 5 stars Straightforward Discussion on an Important Topic.......2007-09-11

In recent weeks I have been attempting to make my way through some of the Shepherd Press catalog of books. Many of the titles and some of the authors were unfamiliar to me. Yet it seems that every time I read one of these titles I unearth some new treasure. Books like Polishing God's Monuments and When Sinners Say "I Do" have blessed me greatly, have stirred my heart and have strengthened my faith. So it was with some expectation that I turned to Everyday Talk by John Younts, another selection from the Shepherd Press catalog.

Everyday Talk is, according to the subtitle, a book about "Talking Freely and Naturally about God with Your Children. With my children often asking about God and with my wife and I trusting that God will, in time, lead them to Himself, I was eager to receive guidance on how I can speak to them in spiritually meaningful ways.

While many books focus in on the few moments in life where you can make a deep and immediate impact on your children--those moments when they come to you broken and hurt and questioning life--this book focuses instead on the other moments. It focuses on the myriad moments and the millions of words that are doubtlessly among the primary influences on your children. As the author says, "The most powerful personal influence in your child's life is everyday talk." Reflecting on Deuteronomy 6 he writes, "Your everyday comments are the ones that teach your children most profoundly about your view of God. Your interaction with God in everyday, ordinary, non-church life is the most powerful tool of influence that you have with your children. It communicates what you really believe."

Younts discusses the importance of talking to children about God everyday and in every way, offering practical ways of doing that. Though certainly not a how-to book, it is practical and creative. As the back cover states, the reader will "learn how to use ordinary conversations to show your kids the goodness and wisdom of God. With clear biblical teaching, John Younts illustrates how to lead your children into a greater awareness of the presence and glory of God."

Reflecting on the book a week or so after finish it, I think I found it most helpful in dealing with the subject of obedience. As the parents of three young children, my wife and I often struggle with this issue. We want our children to obey us and to do so with joy rather than anger or unwillingness. We want to teach them the importance of obedience. We know that we have sometimes done very well with this and at other times have done poorly and are seeking to do better--to be more consistent. Younts teaches that "the goal of your instruction is not only to [for example] have the garbage taken out, but also, primarily, to teach your children the joy of obeying God." It is pleasant words that promote instruction, and not angry or undignified ones. Looking at the example of God's patience with the people of Israel, I learned that I need to stay the course, remaining kind and pleasant even while demanding obedience from my children. And when my children do refuse to obey, or refuse to obey willingly and with a joyful heart, my job is "to recognize their sin for what it is and teach them how to deal with it God's way." I can only do this when I understand that their sin is primarily an offense against God rather than being against me. I need to help them understand that though they may have sinned against their parents, the greater sin was against God and they must be reconciled to Him.

"Parents, when you give in to anger, resentment or self-pity at your children's bad behavior, you make yourself the center of the problem. You are loving yourself first and most. You must love your kids enough to show them the danger of their behavior. They need to see that their first problem is with God, and only secondarily with you. ... You must be more concerned for them than for yourself, and you must be concerned most of all for God. By modeling patience, love, self-control--and all the fruit of the Spirit--you teach your children how extraordinary God is."

In the book's opening pages Younts says, "My prayer is that this book will help you learn how God wants you to talk about Him every day." And later he writes, "the purpose of this book is to help you, parent, to reflect the power of gospel grace in your everyday talk." While God certainly has a lot of work to do in helping me consistently reflect the power of gospel grace in my everyday talk, this book has already helped me see the importance of considering the words I use and the attitudes I convey through all of life's moments. Already it has given me new ears to hear my words and my wife's words to ensure they communicate the fruit of the Spirit and it has given us new ways of considering how we can ensure that our everyday words impact our children for their good and for God's glory. I'm glad to recommend this book to you!

    5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT!!!.......2007-02-18

This book is great. It is great because it is biblical and very comprehensive. If you love your children - buy it! It costs so much less than one time eating out...

5 out of 5 stars Best Parenting Book Out There!.......2005-04-03

Prepare to be challenged and convicted about what we teach our children about God by the way we talk in every day life! In his own inimitable style, Younts challenges and convicts through real-life examples familiar to us all, but he doesn't leave us there. He gives us biblical hope for change by giving us everyday examples of how we can, in the 21st century, be biblically obedient to the Deuteronomy 6 command to teach our children about God as we ". . . sit at home and when (we) walk along the road, and when (we) lie down and when (we) get up . . ." - everyday talk about God in everyday life. I can't wait for his next book!

5 out of 5 stars Simple, convicting and practical!.......2005-03-24

Be prepared to be challenged! This book is easy-to-read, conversational, and gives practical ideas on how to talk to your children about God in everyday situations. It is an enjoyable book, and I consider it a must read for every parent, young or old! You cannot read this book without being challenged and inspired to change.

5 out of 5 stars Great Biblical Insights!!!.......2005-02-26

It is rare that I find a book which describes a pertinent problem, illustrates it and then clearly outlines its solution, but Younts does this deftly in his new book, EVERYDAY TALK.
Few would dispute that there are increasing problems with the youth in America today. The increasing crime and suicide rates, drug and alcohol problems, and teenage pregnancies are testimonials to the alienation from God and our fellow man that children are experiencing. As with every complex problem, the causes involved are varied and diverse. In dealing with such a pervasive and complex issue, these causes must be identified and fixed one at a time .
In his work, Younts selects the aspect of everyday interaction with our children and clearly defines, with both explanation and example, how this impacts our children. Further, he then, by instruction and example, outlines ways for correcting the situation. As opposed to a list of rules, he gives us guidelines appropriate to any given situation.
All who read this book will realize that following its precepts results in drawing closer to both God and man, and achieving the clear benefits derived from that. The instructions are outlined in a simple, clear and easy to understand manner. The precepts are not burdensome, but refreshing. This is not an ordinary, but an extraordinary volume; I would recommend it to anyone who interacts with youth in any capacity.

A great read for our long drive home from work. We get caught up in the characters' lives and situations thinking we have the mystery all worked out, but there's that subtle twist in the end. As with all of Tony Hillerman's novels, the background information of the Navajo way of life is interesting and obviously well-researched. Place names are familiar and detailed to give you a sense of the area. We enjoy these tapes very much.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully structured, compelling mystery.......2006-07-12

A Jim Chee, Joe Leaphorn mystery and one which shows the character and process of both men in the crime solving. Joe Leaphorn is investigating the death of a man found beside a railroad on the reservation, written in a notebook is a name, Agnes Tssose and a ceremonial. In a separate act Jim Chee is sent to Agnes Tsosse's Night Way ceremonial to find the man, Henry Highhawk who is visiting her, he has no idea why he has to arrest him, but observes him briefly before arresting him.

There are a number of threads running through her, but in seperate acts both Leaphorn and Chee end up in Washington DC following leads - Leaphorn to find out who the dead man is, and Chee following what is happening to Henry Highhawk and the Smithsonian.

Henry Highhawk is a born again Navajo - his grandmother is Agnes Tsosse but he has only just found that out - he has been learning all about the spirituality and culture of the Navajo and has been setting up a diorama at the Smithsonian to represent the masks of the gods, but it seems he has another presentation in mind. A much more visible act to get the world's attention and to protest against the continued storage of native American skeletons and remains at the museum.

However there are other forces at work, there is something going on at an embassy in Washington which Leaphorn suspects is related but he does not understand how - finally Jim Chee and Leaphorn meet up in Washington to compare notes and it all becomes clear.

The difference in the two men, in their styles of crime solving and the process is fascinating. Jim Chee is slightly more gauche, disturbing a tramp with unexpected results, and yet having much more of a spiritual belief. Joe Leaphorn is older, and while not necessarily more astute, he is much more poised.

I love these mysteries, I noticed someone said don't read this one first. I don't know about that, I have read these all out of order but I haven't read all of them either. This is a great book, a good demonstration of their abilities and a good read which keeps you guessing until the end.

2 out of 5 stars Convoluted and lame plot, definitely not his best.......2005-07-24

I have been reading the Navajo mysteries for the first time, in chronological order. I was sad when each ended, and could barely wait to get the next one from the library...until this one. The plot is convoluted and far fetched with a LOT of holes, and I found the setting ugly and depressing, especially the character of the hit man. (This is the second hit man Hillerman's given us who owes it all to his unhealthy attachment to a disfunctional mama. Hmmmm...) I skimmed the last 4 chapters because I was tired of both the book and the setting...I just wanted it to see how it ended and be done with it because I was not enjoying the experience as I usually do.

So as other reviewers have advised: don't start here!

3 out of 5 stars an average Hillerman addition to his great series.......2004-08-18

Chee and Leaphorn travel to Washington DC in an attempt to uncover mysteries that nag upon their souls. I won't talk very much about the plot. I am sure that if you read other reviews here you will pretty much satisfy your needs in that regards to your content. What I will say is that this novel is pretty much the same as every other Chee/Leaphorn duo in the Hillerman archive. Both of them stumble across something that isn't right, and as they work towards solving their problems, their work gets intertwined. After reading this scenario a dozen times, it becomes a bit tedious. Especially when Hillerman stretches plausibility. This work contains characters and plots that read like a fantastical comic book. The main evildoer is so typical that it is hard to take him seriously.
The only good thing about this book is the personal interactions with Chee, Leaphorn, and Janet Pete (Chee's current love interest). I would have enjoyed this book a lot more if it played up primarily personal dealings with these three characters and others along the way while playing down the tired mystery that sadly overwhelms these pages.

4 out of 5 stars A good book, but too cruel.......2003-02-26

I am a great fan of Tony Hillerman's, and I think this book is as well-written as his others. The plotting is good, the characters are well-drawn, and the world he creates seems accurate (I'm a former resident of the DC suburbs). My only problem with the book is that, at times, it becomes too cruel. There's not really any unnecessary violence, or excessive gore. But there are some painful moments.

Even so, it's a Hillerman, which means that it has a solid plot and good character development. Not the best place to start reading the series, perhaps. But worth a look if you like Hillerman.

5 out of 5 stars Mr. Leaphorn and Mr. Chee go to Washington.......2003-01-21

This is the ninth -- and one of the best -- of the outstanding Navajo Detective series. Hillerman first wrote three books with detective Joe Leaphorn as the hero, then three more featuring Jim Chee, and now he has written three more with both Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee as characters.

The first chapter of "Talking God" will hook you immediately. Unlike most Hillerman books, which take place in the broad horizons of the Navajo Reservation, "Talking God" has the slightly amusing spectacle of the two Navajo policeman wandering around Washington D.C. One of them (Leaphorn) is uncomfortably attired in a three piece suit and the other (Chee) wears cowboy boots, blue jeans, bolo tie, and leather jacket -- a bizarre apparition indeed among the paper warriors of the governing tribe.

The novel features a look at Navajo ceremonials, a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the Smithsonian, some insights into the bones-and-stones argument between anthropologists and Indians, a villainous villain, lots of good old fashioned murder and mayhem, a bit of international intrigue, and a riproaring climax as the two Navajos solve the mystery while the FBI, as usual, stands around in a fog.

5 out of 5 stars wonderful little book.......2003-06-16

This small volume was my first introduction to Francois Fenelon,
and it immediately won me over. The language is beautiful, the
message powerful, and the above-average binding makes it a pleasure
    to read.

1 out of 5 stars Poor translation obscures the spiritual message.......2000-09-17

The translation is awkward throughout this book, and the awkward phrasing makes the message almost unintelligible. For example, the following sentence is from the book:

"When the heart has already a tendency toward God, we can easily accustom ourselves to suspend the hasty movements of nature, and wait for the second moment when we can act through grace by listening to God." [What does this mean????]

Although I don't have the original French in front of me, Fenelon probably was saying something like: "If we have given primary place to God in our hearts, we can learn to curb our impulses and wait for the grace of God to direct our responses."

The muddled, literal translation found in this book does a disservice to Fenelon, who is a clear thinker on spiritual topics. [There is a mistake in the information given about the book: The translator is not Edmondson but another person -- according to the flyleaf of the book.]
