a must read.......2007-09-27
Tim Keller does a great job laying out the biblical basis and practical insights for mercy ministries that's misunderstood and neglected in many evangelical churches.
i recommend this book to every christian and also to those who are distressed about the poverty and human plight, injustice and oppression.
Real Christianity.......2007-07-03
Keller's book is an in-your-face account of what real Christianity is. For instance, "Christians must give sacrificially, until they lifestyle is lowered." is the first line of the overview of Chapter Four, which talks about "a balanced lifestyle." Every professing Christian should read and heed what Keller says in this book. It will confirm what they are professing is real of fake.
A Good Resource for a Missional Church.......2007-01-04
There's a lot of books out there on being missional. Most of them laud the theory of being missional. This one provides a good example (on a local and urban scale) of how to move toward being missional. Keller provides a strong theological case and some practical examples of how to live out ones faith.
Keller Hits a Homerun!!!.......2006-12-27
Real religion is more than doctrinal orthodoxy; it has to do with how we show mercy in the same way that we have been shown mercy. The Parable of the Good Samaritan serves as our springboard into this study of the doctrine and practice of ministries of mercy. These two elements of doctrine and practice form the two pillars that serve as the outline of the book. Following a typical Pauline approach, the first half of the book sets forth the basic doctrinal foundation of Mercy Ministries. The latter half of the book then put doctrine to practice in a series of hands-on strategies and tactics that can be utilized to mobilize a Mercy Ministry within a church.
Criticizing this book would be a bit like attacking motherhood and apple pie. Keller gives an excellent balance as he shows that Mercy Ministries are not meant to replace the preaching of the Gospel, but that the message of the Gospel without the accompanying ministry of mercy is an incomplete message. Word and deed, mercy and evangelism are inseparable, existing in a symbiotic, interdependent relationship (Page 111). At the same time, he is careful not to confuse word and deed as has been done by some modern ecumenicals.
In the practical section of the book, he gives tactics that would be useful both to the layman as well as to the pastor and church officer. These include actual strategies for priming, preparing and cultivating a church to enter into the work of Mercy Ministries.
"God requires a love that cannot be required. Mercy is commanded, but it must not be in response to the command. Rather it is a response to the mercy of God that we have received. We are merciful because we have been shown mercy" (Page 62). "Orthodoxy without social concern is not orthodoxy" (Page 114).
Helpful teaching tool.......2006-03-20
I use this book to lead a small group at my church. Keller does an excellent job breaking down the principles and then explaining how to apply the principles both individually and corporately. The teachings are very solid and trustworthy and Keller's focus on the need for balance (of word & deed, lifestyle choices, etc) is stressed throughout the book.
Book Description
From Botswana to Thailand, from Peru to Bosnia, the missionary work of the Catholic Church stretches from pole to pole, encompassing every part of the globe. Jozef Cardinal Tomko, the Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples from 1985 to 2001 under the late Pope John Paul II, shares his account of the many missionary journeys he made around the world. Often accompanying the Pope, Cardinal Tomko saw firsthand how the Church is dealing with the particular challenges of various cultures around the world. He gives witness to the flowering of faith as well as the hardships that many Catholics face in other countries. The encyclopedic knowledge of countries and peoples that the Cardinal possesses will enrich the reader's understanding of the world today, and show that the Roman Catholic Church is truly "one, holy, catholic, and apostolic."

Putting Your Faith to Work.......2001-09-26
This powerful book resonates with all Christians who feel that the church in America has become stale, compromising, and irrelevant for our times. How can we reach today's generations with authentic faith? How can we call on God's power to make a difference in our communities? This book provides an exciting answer -- to all who genuinely seek an active presence for God's church in these trying times. Renewal, revival, and community transformation ARE possible. May we join together in making it happen!
Outstanding Resource!.......2000-07-08
As the General Supervisor of the International Church of the Foursquare Gospel in the United States, I constantly look for leading edge thinking to resource our 5,000 licensed ministers. Jack Dennison's book, CITY REACHING, is a seminal work which provides a strong biblical basis, historical precedent, and international testing for his city reaching model.
I ordered and distributed cases of this book to leaders including the 225 Divisional Superintendents in the U.S. I believe CITY REACHING will provide the platform for experimentation and a growing body of literature that will inform a return to reaching our cities. I will continue to use this book as our primary resource for city reaching information.
The church is back in the city!.......1999-11-10
The concepts shared in this book have revolutionized my own life. My concern has moved from simply a local church focus to a vision for the whole church engaging the culture. Jack Dennison has opened a major window for the church in our generation. Not only does he demonstrate a fresh awareness of cities as a pivotal place of mission at this time in history but also a re-thinking of how the church operates as one unified church in an urban setting. I hope every serious Christian reads this book for it will undoubtedly spark a fire leading to transforming action just as it has in my life.
A must read for anyone serious reaching cities for Christ.......1999-11-10
Jack Dennison has the best grasp of city-reaching than anyone I know so it was not a surprise to me that this book is so insightful and valuable in fleshing out the city-reaching vision. Jack masterfully describes the historical setting and the basic biblical principles involved in this stategy which has so completely captured the imagination of missiologists all over the world. This book is definitely a must-read for anyone really serious about getting involved in city-reaching. As a practitioner down in the trenches trying to make city-wide mobilization of the church a functional reality and not just a theroretical construct, this book is a real answer to prayer. If someone reads and digests this book, they will be miles ahead in the greatest innovation for end time harvest that can be imagined. Jack didn't write this book because he likes to write--he doesn't. He wrote it out of a passion to see the world reached for Christ. I believe God is going to use this book mightily to fire the imagination of men and women all over the world.
Foundational for achieving lasting urban transformation........1999-11-07
Dennison has produced an excellently articulated, well organized, and revolution-catalyzing challenge, and process guide. He has hit the nail on the head regarding the state of the Church in America. His experience has obviously prepared him for being an apostle to the Church and cities of America. His strategies for mobilizing the whole Church to reach the whole city are clearly set forth, Biblically-based, and logical. This book promises to be a transitional document in setting the Church on a new, transforming, and crucially needed course.

Book Description
The triple-crown winner of mystery’s most prestigious awards–the Edgar, the Anthony, and the Shamus–Rick Riordan blasted onto the crime scene with one of its freshest and most intriguing protagonists, Tres Navarre. In
Mission Road, Navarre returns in a wrenching crime drama in which he must revisit the sins of the past to catch a killer about to get away with murder…again.
San Antonio private investigator Tres Navarre is used to working on the edge–that razor-sharp line between legal and life sentence. But this time he’s stepped straight into a no-man’s-land. When an old friend appears at his door spattered with blood and wanted for attempted homicide, Tres doesn’t have to think twice about where his loyalty lies–or the consequences.
Ralph Arguello is a criminal who put the street life behind him when he married SAPD detective Ana DeLeon. Now Ana’s been gunned down and her fellow cops don’t need to look far to find a prime suspect. For Ana recently reopened the most infamous cold case in SAPD history–the unsolved murder on notorious Mission Road eighteen years before that threw the San Antonio underworld into bloody chaos. Ana was about to bring charges against the suspected killer: her husband, Ralph Arguello.Tres is sure that Ralph didn’t do it–and that he didn’t shoot his wife. But with the police and the Mafia both out for revenge, there’s no one to turn to for help.
Now, armed and dangerous, the targets of a citywide manhunt, Tres and Ralph have just hours to
discover what really happened on Mission Road almost two decades ago. To find the truth, they must set a collision course with the past–and with a secret that will tear their lives apart.

Spenser is 1 in 10,000. Make up your mind.......2006-02-27
This is my first Rick Riordan novel and it is my intention to read them all. It reminds me of Robert Ferrigno's brilliant "Heartbreaker," dark, edgy.
Mr. Riordan is very successful in jumping tenses, and you get a good feel for the other characters. I am unfamiliar with San Antonio so I felt, like GM Ford in Seattle, he was able to use the city like a character as well.
You know the plot. Beautiful but extremely credible cop falls in love and marries criminal. She rotates her shift to the (now) ever popular 'cold case' section and investigates a murder that has earmarks of her husband's tawdry past. And she's about to finger . . ., when she's shot and in a coma.
What I didn't care for is the wisecracking. It seemed to me, again like Ferrigno and Kyle Mills' alter ego, Michael Crow, that Riordan set out to write a dark novel. These are good. There's a huge place for them. Read James Lee Burke.
Dark novels don't do comedy well. You don't wear a baseball hat to a funeral. Crais and Parker and DeMille do smart aleck retorts well. That's their intention. I think Mr. Riordan should stick with the noir. 4 stars. Larry Scantlebury
Continuing a superb series.......2005-10-13
Although his peers, such as Lehane, McGarrity, and Connelly certainly deserve their acclaim, I don't understand why Riordan hasn't appeared to receive the same acknowledgement as an accomplished mystery writer. This guy is good! I agree with a previous reviewer that Riordan stumbled a bit with SOUTHTOWN, but he's recovered very nicely with MISSION ROAD. I sometimes wish Riordan would turn books out at a faster clip---I"m always anxious for his next novel---but I suppose the time he takes in crafting his stories is worth the wait
Excellent.......2005-10-01
Rick Riordan can flat out write. I was hooked after reading his first book, "Big Red Tequila." This may be the most "mature" Navarre book to date and will leave you wanting more. I couldn't put this book down and literally flew through it. Now I am left anxiously awaiting his next book. I highly recommend any book by Riordan; keep 'em coming Rick.
Another Winner from Rick Riordan.......2005-09-07
I discovered this author about 6 months ago, have read all of the Tres Navarre series and loved every one. Mission Road is just the latest of winners. I won't rehash the plot nor reveal the ending, but it's one of the reasons I love Riordan's writing -- just when you think you're winding down to the ending of the story . . . BAM!, you're in for a surprise.
Exciting Page Turner!.......2005-09-06
The newest installment in the Tres Nevarre series is an exciting page turning experience. The action in the novel takes place in less than two days - the result is that reading the novel is alot like watching 24 episodes of the Fox show "24". The plot is summarized above - so I will not go into any details on that. The writing in the book is electric, and maintains the wry sense of humor that Riordan has developed throughout the series. The characters, all the way down to Tres' cat, are all well developed. The book is hard to put down: I read the final 200 pages in one sitting. Growing up in San Antonio, I am drawn to the book because it is like a slice of home as well. However, that should not discourage those who are not familiar with south Texas to experience this series.
Book Description
As a boy he dreamed of being a spy undercover behind enemy lines. As a man he found himself undercover for God. Brother Andrew was his name and for decades his life story, recounted in God's Smuggler, has awed and inspired millions. The bestseller tells of the young Dutch factory worker's incredible efforts to transport Bibles across closed borders-and the miraculous ways in which God provided for him every step of the way. Revell and Chosen now reintroduce this powerful story with two new releases: a 35th anniversary edition and The Narrow Road, an expanded youth edition. Both contain a new foreword and afterword. The youth edition also features information about ministry to the persecuted church today, including country profiles, quotes from Christians in underground churches, ''what if'' scenarios based on real-life threats they face, and stories from others who have participated in Brother Andrew's Bible-smuggling work. Brother Andrew's story remains as inspiring today as it was thirty-five years ago, and with these new releases it will motivate a whole new generation to risk everything to follow God's call.

`Five star' story questionably `packaged.'.......2007-10-02
The Narrow Road is a reprint of Brother Andrew's `God's Smuggler' that has been distractingly repackaged by the Christian alternative band, Jars of Clay. When a friend lent me tNR, I must admit that I was cautiously put off by the overt graphical `hipness' of the book design. This has apparently been conceived as the `cool' contemporary version of God's Smuggler. More distracting than the gussied-up look and feel, are the story-in-story-vignettes that have been dropped into many pages. These disjointed side-stories often feel artificial and even dubious (i.e., a Muslim boy of the Comoros Islands thinks he has a romantic interest in a certain "very beautiful" Christian girl but eventually decides that he has actually been interested in studying the Bible with her father); it seems that some of these questionable snippets have been composed and interjected essentially because the design scheme demanded them. Style dictates substance; this isn't worthy of Brother Andrew's autobiography.
Sorry for the long complaint. Unfortunately, it wasn't merely a digression; the superimposed design features get in the way here. At least that is my opinion. Brother Andrew's story, printed and reprinted since the late 1960's using the title `God's Smuggler,' is a fast-paced and fascinating first person telling of Andrew's courageous work behind the Iron Curtain. The story itself won't let you go, the pages almost turn themselves, you'll probably read it in two or three sittings. Contained in The Narrow Road is a "five star" story ("God's Smuggler"); but you might want to read a different edition.
God's Smuggler.......2007-07-23
Though I have published thirty-one titles on the Biblical roots and history of the Early A.A. Christian Fellowship, my efforts have, of late, turned very specifically to the simple program developed in Akron by the pioneer A.A. Christian Fellowship. Its ingredients were abstinence, faith in the creator, obedience, growth in fellowship through Bible study and prayer, intensive work serving and helping other alcoholics to get straightened out. The more I looked at the early program--as distinguished from the one fashioned by Bill Wilson in his basic text published four years later in the Spring of 1939--the more I could see the believing and healing that were an integral part of the astonishing early A.A. cures. In despair, those wretched individuals turned away from booze and to their Creator for deliverance. They did it by accepting Christ. And they were not only cured but said so for a decade. Those observations took me to the books on believing and healing. The Narrow Road and the story of Brother Andrew's relentless efforts to serve his Creator by smuggling Bibles to foreign areas where they were far from welcome--even forbidden--this book was at the top of my reading list on trust in God. The Brother Andrew part of this title presents a cogent reason for believing that God is able and willing to do what He promises to do. And that is where Brother Andrew put his mind. Believe and receive. The story contains great language on this matter of truly believing that God can and will keep His promises. This is a belief factor that is fast vanishing from the alcoholic treatment picture today though it was immensely important and necessary to the unusual success of the A.A. pioneers between 1935 and 1938. Over and over, Brother Andrew put his trust in God and believed that God would enable Him to serve and love through Bible distributions, despite overwhelming obstacles. This is a book of commendable service and value.
Wonderful, insightful, and will inspire you anew!.......2007-04-20
Brother Andrew strikes many a harmonious chord in this latest book of his. His stories of people are fascinating and how God uses the simplest people to accomplish His purpose. Wonderful reading material for anyone needing a boost to their faith in God's promises!
The Narrow Road is compassionate and moving........2004-05-26
The book, The Narrow Road, by Brother Andrew and Jars of Clay was inspiring. Brother Andrew tells his life story of serving God through the smuggling of Bibles and spreading the word to those who do not have access. His life story is incredible in how he put his life on the line every day just so that other would hear the Word of God. Jars of Clay also journeyed to China and Vietnam to lead services in the underground churches. The experience did not only teach the people there, but Jars of Clay themselves. What greater an experience that to witness first hand, the martyrs for Christ in China and Vietnam. The many stories throughout the book were so inspiring also. Account after account displayed the unending compassion these people had for Christ, and how they would stop at nothing to live for Him. I would highly recommend this book. The stories never get old, and the compassion of one man is jaw dropping. Page after page unravels the coming of nations to Christianity and how one man can make such a difference.
God's Smuggler Plus.......2002-09-10
This is an heirhoom edition which includes the text of Brother Andrew's world-wide best seller, God's Smuggler, plus snatches of other stories of the Persecuted Church. Also a CD of Jars of Clay. Highly recommended.

Brilliant analysis of faith in these difficult modern times!.......2007-03-31
Brother Andrew brings us stories of persecuted Christians all over the globe. With sensitivity and compassion, he presents their stories with exciting and terrifying details. Not a book for the faint of heart, or easily intimidated Christian! Another wonderful book by a truly God-inspired man!
Truely inspiring.......2006-05-24
This is a wonderful book that I urge all Christians and non-Christians to read. Brother Andrew tells amazing stories of smuggling the Bible into nations where Christians are persecuted by their governments. The book is well written and entertaining. It is also inspiring to hear the stories of missionaries who risk their lives to bring the word of God to other believers around the globe. Brother Andrew and Open Doors do amazing things for Christians and reading this book will make you want to do amazing things for God, too!
The calling.......2006-02-10

Buyer Beware! Incomplete Edition.......2006-11-17
Kessinger Publishers has reprinted only chapter 13 of The Christ of the Indian Road. The first 12 chapters are missing. This is nothing more than a pamphlet with most of the pages blank. The two other reviews included here are based on an earlier edition of the original book. This incomplete Kessinger edition was published December 2005.
If you're interested in India..........2004-10-01
As someone who has recently traveled in India, this book has meant a lot to me in understanding spirituality there. It was written in the 1920's and there are some great insights about Ghandi and the spiritual impact he had on India.
The Christ of the Indian Road.......2001-09-27
Anyone who is prepared for conviction about their walk
with Jesus the Christ or who wants to know what having a
truly committed heart for Him is, will want to read this book.
It is very obvious that E.S. Jones was Totally inspired by
the Holy Spirit to write this book. In the most gracious
manner possible, E. Stanley Jones teaches that, as followers of Christ, our Only purpose is to bring Him to others. Not imply or outright tell people they have to know Jesus like everyone else. That No Matter where we live, we are all individuals in Christ collectively comprising the entire body of Christ. Mr. Jone's realizations could Only come from a heart that is Truly aimed toward and seeking the Son of Man.
