Good except for one huge issue.......2007-06-16
Overall, not a bad book, but it wouldn't qualify as one of my favorites. It was just kind of an average romance. I liked catching up with Jude, May and Denny. And Ashley and Quinton were pretty cool characters. They had a workable romance. And I'm glad that Foster closed up the bad-guy storyline that started in Jude's Law. I thought the fact that Ashley ended up pregnant was rather predictable. In the end, it was a good read, but not great.
My biggest complaint with this book was the situation with Ashley and May being sisters and not knowing it (May's father had an affair with Ashley's mother). It turns out that Ashley actually knew she was May's sister and that just didn't work for me. I didn't care that she knew, but it didn't work right. I never once got the impression that Ashley knew during Jude's Law, then during Murphy's Law there are were subtle hints throughout the book that Ashley actually DID know. And I was like "huh?" If that was the way Foster wanted to work it, I think she could have worked it out through the two books better. Then the resolution of that issue drove me bonkers. It's this huge thing. Two best friends who are really sisters, with one of them knowing for a long time, and the other having know clue. From the time it first came up, I couldn't wait until the part where they came face to face with that knowledge. So to have the end come around and to have that story point resolved with a sentence "May had accepted Ashley as her sister with tearful glee" was a real suck-out. I wanted the actual moment, the emotion, the conflict, and all I got was a short past-tense paragraph that conveyed nothing. I hated it. Foster did a total injustice to that situation, and it annoyed me to death.
Not exactly what I expected.......2007-04-08
After reading Jude's Law, I couldn't wait to get my hands on this one. It starts out where Jude's Law leaves off and begins with the incredible chemistry between Ashley and Quinton. For those who read JL first will know exactly what I'm talking about when I say that the sparks that fly off Ash and Quinton is----WOW! While it seems that the romance will be as hot as that of Jude's Law, unfortunately, it fizzles into a series of "huh" questions. I think sometimes Ashley is a little too brazen, even for her, and it gets to be a bit boring. Moreover, there doesn't seem to be as many page-turning chapters, and I found that I wasn't enjoying the storyline as much. While overall it's a good read, I was expecting a lot more in terms of the book having a page-turning, can't put this book down, what will happen next plot. Just an idea--take this one on long trip where you'll need something to entertain you for a long time. (Hope this helps)
Loved it!.......2007-01-15
Lori Foster has become one of my favorite authors. I love all of her books and this one gets the same rating. She never disappoints, keeps you hooked from the first line.
Enjoyable story.......2006-12-12
I enjoyed Quinton and Ashley's story, but it was not as good as Too Much Temptation (my favorite), thus the 4 stars. Maybe I just expect more sensuality and dominance out of Lori Foster's books and heros, but still this was a nice sequel to Jude's Law.
I'm hoping to see Denny's story in the future.
Murder, Romance, Bombs and leaves you with a smile ...............2006-11-01
Murphy's Law by Lori Foster is the second book in the series - the first was Jude's Law. This novel gives us the story of Ashley (May's bestfriend and sister) and a rich handsome Quinton Murphy. Ashley and Quinton sizzle right of the pages. Elton (villian from Jude's Law) is still out to get everyone with a focus on Ashley. Enjoy!

Book Description
"[Interactive Corporate Compliance] is a creative contribution to the generally moribund business regulation literature. It makes compelling reading." American Business Journal, Winter 1990 This book describes a new approach to business-government interactions while giving business and government officials a new set of practical proposals for change. Throughout U.S. history, the relationship between business and government has fluctuated constantly under the influence of changing political conditions, rather than in response to a conscious design. The proper relationship between business and government in the United States remains an unsettled issue. However, the time has come, Sigler and Murphy assert, to reconsider some old assumptions with regard to this relationship and to examine some new alternatives to the benefit of both forces. Written by a respected political scientist and an attorney experienced in corporate compliance law, this book represents a review of the history of government regulation of business, showing where it has succeeded and where it has failed. Coining the phrase "interactive compliance," the authors provide a new framework for corporate compliance--one that would be nonadversarial and cooperative in nature. Their book offers a novel, yet practical, approach by which business can comply with government regulation on the one hand, while government takes a nonadversarial stance in response to business on the other.
Book Description
Alcatraz Island is one of the most infamous places in American history. The maximum-security prison on the “Rock,” once home to criminals like Al Capone, Machine Gun Kelly, and the Birdman of Alcatraz, has long since captured our country’s imagination. But what few people realize is that during the past 200 years, Alcatraz was not only home to criminals—it was home to many children, too! Over the years, the island has been home to the children of Native Americans, lighthouse keepers, military soldiers, and prison guards.
Imagine playing hide-and-seek in the prison morgue, having a convict as your babysitter, or having Al Capone as your neighbor. This compelling photo-essay profiles generations of children who had the unique opportunity of growing up on this isolated island in San Francisco’s shadow. With personal anecdotes, revealing interviews with the surviving Alcatraz Kids, historical documents, and archival and family photographs, Children of Alcatraz reveals a one-of-a-kind childhood sure to fascinate readers young and old.

disappointing.......2007-07-04
I had expected a bit more in depth description of the life of the children, so was disappointed. It was purchased for my grandson as he hopes to visit Alcatraz and felt it would give a new dimension to his understanding. It will, but not as much as I had hoped.
Generations grow up "on the Rock" . . .and tell the tale . . . .......2007-04-27
Every reader who enjoyed "Al Capone Does My Shirts" should be steered to this book. Claire Rudolf Murphy gives a fascinating survey of the progression of "communities" at different times in history in her book about the "Children of Alcatraz." Following native Americans, the earliest families to live there were those of the lighthouse keepers in the 1850s, then the military came. When the island was transformed into a high security prison in 1934, the families of guards lived there until 1963. It isn't known whether any prisoner ever survived an escape attempt; the prison was considered a fortress, and the Bay formidable.
There was another stressful period from 1969 to 1971 when Native Americans occupied the island to protest the injustices of U. S. law. This protest lasted eighteen months. The stories of each group are of great interest and pictures are particularly helpful in implementing these. Reviewer mcHaiku is always surprised at the very small acreage of the island & the many buildings, including cell blocks, in close juxtaposition. Living in such extraordinary circumstances brought about close friendships and later reunions strengthened those unique relationships.
Alcatraz Island is not so much a symbol of the city's past but more a multiple historic marker. Today, of course, it is a destination for curiosity-seekers, but all visitors will be surprised by the wide interest generated which can also stimulate many enthusiastic searches for more information via a computer or library. Author Claire Murphy may have inspired many readers to discover why the island was originally named "Pelican" - - and it had nothing to do with the "Birdman of Alcatraz" either.
A fascinating survey adults as well as kids will want to pursue........2006-12-10
CHILDREN OF ALCATRAZ: GROWING UP ON THE ROCK doesn't focus on the usual prison history of the island, but on how it also served as home to many children, from Native Americans to lighthouse keepers, prison guards and beyond. Photos of generations of such children who grew up there blend with memoirs, interviews with the surviving Alcatraz Kids, and history to provide a fascinating survey adults as well as kids will want to pursue.
Book Description
The new Studies in Contract Law, Sixth Edition, has been revised and updated in many ways, both to cover new developments in contract law and to increase the book's usefulness as a teaching tool.
There is a new Chapter Three, "An Introduction to Remedies." This Chapter, which follows Chapter Two on the Bases of Promissory Liability, provides an early overview of contract remedies through text, cases, and problems. It can be a "stand alone" chapter for courses when there is not enough time for a more comprehensive study or used as an introduction to the more comprehensive treatment of remedies in Chapter 7.
There is a new Chapter Eight on Contract Dispute Resolution: Some Alternatives to Courts. This Chapter introduces the student to dispute settlement by agreement, including through mediation, and dispute settlement by private adjudication (outside of the courts), including arbitration.
There is a new subsection in Chapter Four, The Bargain Relationship, which deals with Assent in Electronic Contracting. Building on an analysis of the so-called "Gateway" problem, this subsection reviews current legislation on electronic contracting and features a recent decision by the Second Circuit (the Specht case) on "click wrap" licenses.
Section 2 of Chapter Five, Avoidance of the Contracts, reviews the recent decisions in California holding that one-sided arbitration clauses in consumer or employment contract are unconscionable.
Section 3 of Chapter Five on Illegality features updated materials on cohabitation agreements, surrogacy contracts, and promissory fraud related issues.
Section 1 of Chapter Nine, Third Party Interests, has a recent case on the assignability of rights created by structured settlements that, in turn, implement judgments in tort cases. This affords an opportunity to review the provisions of Revised Article 9 of the UCC and the common treatment of agreements prohibiting assignment.
The provisions of Revised Article 2, Sales, which is scheduled for final approval at the 2003 Annual Meeting of the American Law Institute are incorporated into the text and problems.
Relevant provisions of the U.N. treaty on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods and the UNIDROIT Principles of International Contracts are identified and discussed where relevant.
Customer Reviews:
Why don't we just study from Gilberts?.......2007-03-21
Short review while I study contracts out of this book. The book is poorly written, where oftentimes the question of law is presented before the facts. Facts, though not what you should take with you, focus you to the event. Law with no facts is meaningless, and we might as well read out of the Restatement book. Sometimes the cases are pointlessly long, sometimes elusively short. Always confusing, never well written. Why put in 1st restatement when we are on the 3rd? Why tell the story out of order? Why give the procedural history before the facts? My questions go unanswered. However, as Contracts go, some of the cases they choose are interesting. Imagine if every single case was about breach of renter's agreement, or arbitration clause. At least there are some fun wheeling and dealings in here.
Classic Volume.......2006-01-04
It is a very rare thing when when words coil around your soul and leave you breathless and clear-eyed. Few books have the power or brilliance to be transforming, and even fewer are brave enough to launch entirely new ways of thinking about literature.
And then comes "Studies in Contract Law: Sixth Edition," the newest book from renowned legal philosopher Murphy Et Al. A quick glance at its faux-leather cover and embossed title and you might cast it aside as yet another heavy, meandering read. But, as is often true, the adventurous will be rewarded with delights heretofore unknown to modern readers.
"Studies" covers a startling range of topics, from the high-powered world of business to the disintegration of families throughout various eras of American history. It even briefly delves into poetry, quoting what it describes as "one of the delights of legal literature," namely the immortal Professor Brainerd Currie's "Aberlone, Rose Of." In the discussion of a presumed barren cow on page 490, the recitation of lines like "Ah me!--Ah moo! / Respectively their quidsome balm / How mournfully they chew!" grips us with longing and wistfulness.
The frenetic pace of the text is filled with endless cliffhangers; nervous readers should take warning. Will Roscoe ever find his true father? Will the theft of Mrs. Hooper's gardenias ever be solved? Will Alaska Northern Development, Inc prevail over Alyeska Pipeline Service Co. regarding the applicability of the parol evidence rule of the Uniform Commercial Code, section 2-202, codified as AS 45.02-202? Subplots and intrigue twist throughout the book until page 1121, where a single sentence rings as sharp and true as any in history.
"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times." "Call me Ishmael." "To be or not be." And now, from the sublime mind of Murphy Et Al: "The idea which ruled this case--that where a person for a consideration paid to him by another agrees to pay a sum of money to a third person, a stranger to the transaction, the latter does not thereby become possessed of the absolute right to the benefit of the promise, nor until he accepts the same in some way; and that while he is ignorant of the promise, or thereafter, at any time before he assents to the transaction, it may be rescinded,--we must admit is well supported in the books."
If the poetry of this sentence does not immediately seize you, consider yourself a hopeless wreck on the shores of The New Literature.

Best International Law book available.......2006-11-05
If you are looking for an International Law hornbook...this is the best. The explanations are clear and concise, and the organization of the book is flawless. Professor Murphy is perhaps the most brilliant legal mind in this area and so it is no wonder that his book is top notch. I would recommend this book for anyone studying International Law!
Excellent International Law Treatise.......2006-10-03
Probably the best introduction to the topic for an American. Covers all important aspects of international law and explains historical and current U.S. positions. Very well written. I would have included Malcolm Evans' book in the treatise section of the bibliography, but now you have that information.

murphy's law.......2007-04-07
This book was much better than I anticipated. I fell in love with Molly, and, although some of the storyline was a bit contrived, I didn't mind. Molly seemed to find her way a little too easily after arriving to America. Most women who weren't married, in that day, would have been a prostitute, servant, or factory worker. She dabbles with these "professions" but ultimately finds her way thanks to some good fortune. Maybe I'm just a sucker for all things Irish :) This book is a good history lesson but also light. Highly recommended to any mystery buff.
Molly Murphy.......2007-03-18
I thought this was a very good book; easy reading and held
my interest. Couldn't put it down. Was happy I started with
the first, now I want to read them all in order. Highly recommend
Wonderful heroine.......2007-01-17
I've been a fan of Rhys Bowen for awhile - I really enjoyed her Evan Evans series (Ms. Bowen does a marvelous job of capturing Wales and the Welsh, with all their quirky charm). Molly Murphy is even better. In reading this book, I felt transported to early 20th century New York, with its wild mix of raw immigrants all jostling together toward a new country. And Molly is a great heroine - modern and feisty enough to be continually interesting, but not so modern as to seem anachronistic. Oh, and the mystery was good, too! ;-)
Enjoyable book for travelling.......2006-11-17
I purchased this book to have for light reading while travelling. For this it was excellent. Easy to read. Rhys Bowen writes in the style of Agatha Christie. In fact, she was born in England. Molly Murphy is an Irish girl who fled Ireland after murdering her would-be rapist, and is now living in New York, where, being a feisty red-head, she gets into all sorts of trouble. This is the first in a series.
Fun mystery with Irish girl in Old New York.......2006-08-17
Murphy's Law by Rhys Bowen is the first book in the Molly Murphy mystery series. After accidentally killing a land owner, Molly Murphy must flee Ireland to avoid the gallows. She soon finds herself caught up with another family on their way to America, but once at Ellis Island, she's suspected of being involved with another murder, and the only way to clear her name is by finding the real killer. Bowen keeps things simple without extraneous detail, but her descriptions still shine, and Molly is a real character. There are no pretensions in Miss Murphy: she wants to live the good life, and she's not afraid to break a few rules to find it. I find Daniel Sullivan, the police detective in charge of the case, a little too good to be true, but future books will prove his worthiness for Molly. Molly is not a great detective, constantly putting herself in danger, leaping before looking, making all sorts of assumptions, but she's always entertaining.

Book Description
CONCEPTS IN FEDERAL TAXATION is designed for a more conceptual, less detailed approach to federal taxation of individuals and corporations in an introductory taxation course. This conceptual approach presents taxation as a small number of unifying concepts, stressing the overriding principles that apply to all specific tax rules and regulations. Concepts in Federal Taxation offers an excellent balance between tax concepts and the Internal Revenue Code and regulations, preparing users for a future in the business environment.
Book Description
The U.S. has often proclaimed its support for the rule of law in international affairs, but has found it increasingly difficult to adhere to it in practice. John Murphy demonstrates the wide-ranging difficulties obstructing U.S. adherence to the rule of law. He also examines the reasons for the declining U.S. support for the international institutions it was instrumental in creating, as well as U.S. unwillingness to support new popular initiatives in international law.
