Book Description

Everyone thinks they know the real Gordon Ramsay: rude, loud, pathologically driven, stubborn as hell.

Now, for the first time, the world's most famous—and infamous—chef tells the inside story of his life: his difficult childhood, his father's alcoholism and violence, his brother's heroin addiction, his short-circuited soccer career, and his fanatical pursuit of gastronomic perfection—everything that helped mold him into the culinary talent and media powerhouse that he is today. He also dishes the dirt on the rich and famous, and takes you behind the scenes of some of the great restaurants.

Honest, outrageous, and intensely personal, Roasting in Hell's Kitchen will not only change your perception of Gordon Ramsay but that of the cutthroat world of haute cuisine as well.

4 out of 5 stars I love this comic so much but there are some problems.......2005-02-22

This is, by far, my favorite ongoing, branded superhero comic on the shelves right now. Out, Hardcore, and Widow are all so human and so kick-butt at the same time that I just can't put them down once I pick them up, no matter how many times I've read them. Not to mention *drool* Born Again. I bought this one, finally, to complete the collection, and while there are some parts that are awesome, there are some parts that don't resonate and one part that is just plain wrong.

First of all, the first Daredevil comic I ever read is in this collection, the one that got me into the character in the first place and made me buy all the other ones and the Millers etc, and that is the issue I like to call Superhero Intervention. In it, Matt gets called into the park where his friends Peter Parker, Luke Cage, Dr. Strange, and Mr. Fantastic are all there, out of costume, telling him to stop being a crazy person. It's brilliant. Alex Maleev's rendering of Peter in particular is priceless.

Some stuff that doesn't work: Jessica Jones. Okay, I love that character, but does Bendis really have to keep inserting her into his other comics? And she just doesn't look right here. Also, as the story plods on it starts to feel old. There are also two full pages of Ben Uhrich just sitting there, talking. It's the same frame, over and over again, for two whole pages. Blah! I mean, I love Ben, but I don't need to stare at his yabbering maw this long.

And then there is the part that is WRONG. Please correct me if you know better, because I am relatively new to this comic, but wasn't Matt relatively old when his father was killed? Because I checked, and when Miller wrote it in Visionaries, he was at least a teenager. He was a kid when he lost his sight, but he was a grown-up teenager when his dad died. After all, that's why he never has foster parents. But here, in a giant splash page, Maleev draws him like he's ten years old. Come on! I've only been reading this comic a year and I know better!

This book is still great for fans, but if you want a good taste, start with Out, or Hardcore, or Widow.

5 out of 5 stars Continuing Excellence.......2004-09-09

Continuing a year after volume 6's events in which Matt Murdock reaches the breaking point and declares himself kingpin of Hell's Kitchen, this volume explores the aftermath of Matt's actions and how it changes everything and everyone around him.

Bendis continues to keep throwing out amazing stories that really explore who Matt Murdock really is. His characterization is top-notch and the dialogue is as good as ever here. Bendis' work on "Daredevil" is really his best in comics right now (with "Ultimate Spider-Man" and "Powers" following closely behind).

Alex Maleev also continues his signature DD style here which lacks a bit during action scenes but is unbeatable for grounded, dark stories with an emphasis on characters. Hollingsworth's colors compliment the art nicely with very dark, gritty scenes that match the mature tone of the stories.

Simply put: if you have read and liked the previous volumes in the Bendis/Maleev run, this is more of the same and a must read of what is shaping up to be one of the definitive runs in Daredevil's history.

5 out of 5 stars The return of the king.......2004-08-04

This five part storyarc marks the return of writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Alex Maleev. Taking place one year after the events of Hardcore, Matt Murdock/Daredevil has declared himself the new Kingpin of Hell's Kitchen, and with his identity public he doesn't even bother wearing the costume anymore. He has since married Milla Donovan, and even his fellow super heroes (Luke Cage and Spider-Man among them) don't even understand what he is doing. Soon though, the Japanese mob makes a hit on Matt, coming up with what is one of the hugest brawls to grace the pages of Daredevil in years. Bendis' knack for dialogue is in full effect here, and his work on DD has always been excellent, and it continues here. Maleev's art is excellent as well, and he truly is one of the top rising stars in comics today. All in all, The King of Hell's Kitchen is up there with other Bendis/Maleev masterpieces like Out and Hardcore, and is definitely worth picking up.

Perennial bestselling author Jeffrey Deaver's alter ego, William Jefferies, knows a thing or two about Hollywood. So does John Pellam, the hero of his previous Shallow Graves and Bloody River Blues and the latest in the series, Hell's Kitchen. Pellam made a name for himself as a director before a stint in San Quentin took him off the fast track. Since his release he's been earning his keep as a location scout and not so incidentally shooting a documentary about New York's Hell's Kitchen, which he hopes will propel him back into the career that skidded south after he ran afoul of the law.

Pellam has found the star of his new film, one Ettie Washington, who has lived in the neighborhood for decades and is the perfect voice to tell the story of an area that's losing its old-time seediness to urban gentrification. But then Ettie's tenement goes up in a blaze that kills a small boy and puts her right in the public eye--as a suspect. It's only the beginning of a series of fires, each one more deadly. The cops know Ettie couldn't have set the others, since she's been in jail, but they're convinced she knows who did. Pellam has his own reasons for getting Ettie off the hook and embarking on a search for the real pyromaniac. Jeffries saves the best one for the very end of this taut, well-paced, and highly atmospheric thriller. --Jane Adams

Book Description

The New York Times bestselling author of The Empty Chair and The Devil's Teardrop, is back displaying his "ticking-bomb suspense" (People) in this never-before-published thriller.

Every New York City neighborhood has a story, but what John Pellam uncovers in Hell's Kitchen has a darkness all its own. The Hollywood location scout and former stuntman is in the Big Apple hoping to capture the unvarnished memories of longtime Kitchen residents such as Ettie Washington in a no-budget documentary film. But when a suspicious fire ravages the elderly woman's crumbling tenement, Pellam realizes that someone might want the past to stay buried.

As more buildings and lives go up in flames, Pellam takes to the streets, seeking the twisted pyromaniac who sells services to the highest bidder. But Pellam is unaware that the fires are merely flickering preludes to the arsonist's ultimate masterpiece, a conflagration of nearly unimaginable proportion, with Hell's Kitchen -- and John Pellam -- at its blackened and searing epicenter.

3 out of 5 stars 2 1/2 Stars -- Just A So-So Read!.......2007-08-04

I read Hell's Kitchen mainly because Jeffery Deaver wrote it -- and I'm a bit sorry that I did. The plot's concept is fairly interesting, which involves a Hollywood location scout in NYC to film a documentary about the residents of Hell's Kitchen and coming to the aid of an elderly woman accused of having her tenement set on fire. However, Deaver's execution of the plot is somewhat disjointed and implausible, and it moves at too slow a pace. And, while the ending has a fair amount of excitement, it's too litle, too late. Further, I found the characters in Hell's Kitchen to be rather thinly developed, in that they were one-dimensional, somewhat stick-like figures. Although Hell's Kitchen, which was written earlier in Deaver's career under the pseudonym, William Jefferies, is not a BAD book,it is a book I'd advise you to skip. It is easy to understand why it was not published until after Deaver became a "household name."

2 out of 5 stars Read his other books first.......2004-07-12

John Pellam, former stuntman and location scout, is now taking some time off to work on a documentary about the New York City neighborhood called Hell's Kitchen. Located on the west side of Manhattan, it is a rather run down and rough neighborhood. The focus of his documentary is an elderly black woman, Ettie Washington, who has lived in Kitchen all of her life and has been telling Pellam numerous stories about life in that neighborhood.

When Pellam goes to visit Ettie one night, the building is set on fire where both he and Ettie barely manage to survive. After the investigation but the NYFD, the fire is ruled an arson and Ettie is immediately arrested as the one who hired the arson. Pellam is conviced of Ettie's innocence and seeks out to find the truth behind the fire. In the process, he captures the attention of the twisted arsonist who begins to focus his hate and passion on Pellam and wants to see him dead.

Honestly, I was not too thrilled with this book. It is my first book written by Deaver and he had gotten so many positive reviews that I figured I would give him a shot. The writing style wasn't too bad, but he seems to throw in twists and turns that make no sense and the progression of the story gets jagged at times. Also, I had a problem with the description of the Kitchen. He described the neighborhood to be this nasty hole in the wall that probably should be burnt to the ground. I worked near the Kitchen for four years and I will admit it isn't the nicest of neighborhoods, but it isn't nearly as bad as he described it. Especially since the city has taken a keen interest in rebuilding a lot of it.

5 out of 5 stars A rich architectural mystery.......2004-06-11

The cover art doesn't do this book justice. Jeffery Deaver creates a rich archectural landscape for his mystery rather than putting it in some vague cliched archetypal buildings or rooms. The blury red building with yellow lit window does not capture this richness of set and scene!

All through the book not one character nor one scene is wasted. It's an extremely tight and satisfying mystery. The last thread that is tied up as a coda is perhaps one that doesn't need to be addressed. One loose end would have giving the piece complete plausability but to explain the protagonist's motivation for being such a good samaritan is unnecessary and overwritten.

3 out of 5 stars Will keep the reader up late at night.......2004-03-10

Jeffrey Deaver is a bestselling author of detective thrillers. His most famous creation is Lincoln Rhyme the quadraplegic detective. He is highly acclaimed and very well established. Therefore, it is a bit of a surprise to find him nominated in the best paperback original category. This category usually consists of either authors just establishing themselves or those that cannot get a hardback contract for whatever reason. Jeffrey Deaver comes out with at least one bestseller a year. His work is, typically, a high octane thriller in which the action doesn't let up. This work is quite different from what he usually writes. In some ways it is superior.
John Pelham is a filmmaker who has decided to film a documentary on the residents of Hell's Kitchen, a tough neighborhood in Manhattan. He chooses Ettie Washington, an elderly black woman living in a tenement, as being his eyes and ears. He interviews her and invests hours of taping. AS he goes to interview her one last time, an explosive fire rages from the basement of the tenement. Both Pelham and Ettie barely escape with their lives. Ettie, incredibly, becomes a suspect on hiring a professional to set the fire for insurance purposes. However, it soon becomes apparent to both the police and Pelham that a serial pyromaniac is on the loose with the stakes going up with each successive fire.
Jeffrey Deaver has changed his writing style from his other books. This is a much more introspective work. The plot moves along at a much more lugubrious fashion. Characters are more well rounded than a typical Deaver novel. However, the style of writing remains superior and the plot is certainly compelling enough to keep the pages turning but not compelling enough to keep the reader turning the pages late at night in lieu of sleep. A solid nomination.

5 out of 5 stars Bleak but excellent.......2002-04-10

John Pellam is a former stuntman and location scout filming an oral history of New York's Hell's Kitchen. While working on the documentary he meets Ettie Washington, a septuagenarian who lived in that New York City area for most of her life. They get together for several days a week where Pellam records Ettie's memories of life in Hell's Kitchen. One day on his way to see Ettie, John witnesses her building being engulfed by flames. Ettie manages to escape but gets arrested shortly thereafter on suspicion of arson and insurance fraud. The police have strong circumstantial evidence against Ms. Washington and they plan to indict her for the death of one of the building's tenants. Pellam is not convinced of her guilt and he will do everything in his power to prove her innocence.

During the course of his investigation he meets several characters that show life in Hell's Kitchen. Carol Wyandotte is a pessimistic social worker that does not have any hope for the youth living in that area. Roger McKennah is a real estate developer who wants to replace the tenements with new buildings. Sonny is a pyromaniac who is burning buildings all over Ettie's neighborhood for some mysterious motive that will be made clear later in the novel. There are other secondary characters that help bring the book to life, everything from Irish gangs to male prostitutes. Everyone has a story to tell and they make sure John hears all about it.

Jeffery Deaver (or William Jefferies) gives a bleak portrait of this infamous New York area. There is a sense of hopelessness and despair shown throughout the book. It has an interesting plot and it was just recently nominated for an Edgar Award for Best Paperback Mystery Novel. The author's work had certain twists and turns that surprised me as a reader. I strongly recommend this book but be warned, it is a downer. Hopefully the next book I read will lift my spirits.

5 out of 5 stars Watch out, Clive, someone's gaining on you!.......2007-03-24

Damn, this book is a thunderball. It's well thought out, well plotted, and the character development is excellent. This guy can write! "Keep your hatches battened Clive, from the first gripping paragraph on, Hanzl's entry into your genre is coming on like a force 10 gale...watch it that your doors aren't blown off".

My advice to Cussler fans (and I'm one of them), and to everyone else, is to pick up a copy of "Out of Hell's Kitchen" by the fastest possible route and then prepare yourself for an all nighter.

5 out of 5 stars Move over Dan Brown!.......2007-03-22

I am so impressed with this book. It is super well researched and the author speaks with great authority on many different subjects. Plus his grasp of the English colloquialism's and the terrific accents (especially the Irish ones) is wonderful! It was a fab storyline too - very compelling, fast moving and twisting. Plus very believable. He also has a gift of being very efficient, eloquent and effective with his writing, describing characters, scenes and action in a rich and detailed way that is very flowing and totally compliments the pace of the book fantastically. I am super impressed and it is one of the best novels I have ever read - truly. The fact that I read it cover to cover with all the horrendous time constraints I have had recently is testimony to that.

5 out of 5 stars Not to be missed..........2007-02-28

I found out about this book on its web site [...] which was very interesting, and ended up picking up a copy. I really enjoyed this exciting thriller. It held my interest all the way through to the end and then I just wanted to read more. I can't wait for the sequel. There are some interesting twists in the plot and very good character development. If you like a good adventure novel, you will love this one.

5 out of 5 stars This is a great read!.......2006-12-08

This book was a great read! It is a very fast paced novel with tremendous characters. I had trouble putting it down.

The book was very well researched. I was impressed with Mr. Hanzl's depth of knowledge on multiple topics. He covers some very technical explanations while still keeping it a very easy read.

My only complaint is having to wait to find out how my new friends in the book will make out! I can't wait for the next one!!

This is an action thriller with a little science, mystery, and a hint of romance. This is a well crafted novel that keeps you wanting more. The character development is great. It is hard to tell where the story is going. Read it on my vacation. I couldn't have chosen better.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Romantic story.......2004-05-16

The five stars are granted for reason that this is not only an excellent procedural but a romantic story. The romance snaps into place at the end. I won't disclose the details. Jane Bauer is concerned with something known as the City Hall Park case. She is taken off that case and put on a task force to solve old homicides.

It seems to Jane that the initial session is all hype and cheer-leading. She wonders if other groups got more promising cases. Her team's case is set in a rent-controlled building. Four and a half years later all of the former tenants have moved. Such attrition is unusual.

It is a truism that a detective never loses interest in his old cases. Jane talked to Bracken, the investigating officer, about their case, termed the Quill case. It turns out that suspicious circumstances followed other in habitants of Quill's building.

Jane had grown to love her job in the police force. Retiring from it could be a problem for her. She is to move to a new expensive apartment and is slated to start a new job as an insurance investigator.

She likes the havoc below 14th Street. Most of the people in Quill's building had been sad older people, but not Jerry Hutchins. One of the original investigators thought that he did not fit. She flew to Omaha to pursue the investigation. She was in search of Hutchins. The officer assisting Jane in Omaha is injured. A badly beaten Hutchins is located, eventually. Obviously someone in New York City knew that the trail of the case had shifted to Nebraska.

A child Jane gave up for adoption surfaces. The real victim in the cold case used an alias. The plot is exciting and satisfying.

5 out of 5 stars A new series by a great mystery author.......2003-11-21

Detective Jane Bauer is pulled of what she believes to be the case of her career to work with a special unit tackling unsolved crimes. She is planning to leave the NYPD soon for a desk job with an insurance company.

Her new partners are Gordon Defino and Sean MacHovec. It is soon evident that MacHovec prefers to stay in and work the phones. Defino and Jane do the legwork. They were to re-investigate the death of Arlen Quill. Quill had been found stabbed to death in the entry of his apartment building.

When they begin investigating, they find that everyone has moved from the apartment building. Considering that it is a rent-controlled building, this alone is suspicious. Then they find out that there were other deaths that in and of themselves were not suspicious but when you put them all together, they were.

On top of all this, Jane is going through some changes in her life. Recently she split up with Hack. He's married and his daughter was getting suspicious. And she's moving into a new apartment. Then the letter arrives and complicates her life even more.

She ends up going to Omaha to try to find one of the former tenants who might have much needed information. From that trip, she is concerned that she was followed. The case takes on a different tempo. She ends up putting herself in danger in her attempts to solve it.

I really like Jane. She is a complex character but yet she is human. New York is always a great setting for a mystery with a detective for the protagonist.

The plot takes many twists and turns before everything is discovered. It is very well written.

I have always enjoyed Lee Harris' other series starring ex-nun Christine Bennett. The two series are very different and I think that is a good thing.

I highly recommend this new series and cannot wait for the next book to be published.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent New Series!.......2003-09-22

I was very pleased with this new series from Lee Harris, since I felt the Christine Bennett series had gotten stale and silly about three books ago.

Jane is a very likeable character, as is the entire supporting cast. I was a bit put off by the violence towards the end of the book, but I also realized it was necessary to the storyline. The whole thing wrapped up nicely, and it was a book I read at night until I fell asleep with it in my hand.

I look forward to Jane's next adventure.

A great read. Her previous series (Christine Bennett, former nun) was getting a little tired, but with this novel she proves to be a great and versatile writer.

5 out of 5 stars New Lee Harris character solves cold crime from past.......2003-08-12

We're familiar with solving old crimes from the author's ex-nun Christine Bennett series, now some 15 or so books in that set. As devoted fans, we were delighted when Harris set out to give us a new heroine, NYPD Detective Jane Bauer. Bauer is nearing her 20 years of service, with every intention of "pulling the pin" (retiring), but is given a special assignment with several other detectives to solve an old case from years earlier. When Jane discovers that in addition to the murder victim, a few other folks who lived in the same building are also dead, she launches a sequence of investigations that eventually flush out the truth, mostly from clues that were never worked the first time around. Her male sidekicks Defino and MacHovek help her with much of the legwork, but it's Jane's trip to the Midwest that really brings things into focus midway through what turns out to be a fairly complex plot.

While much of the form of this book -- the cold case, the New York setting, and a female lead with both smarts and a winning way of dealing with people -- reminds us of the other Harris series, we have here more of a police procedural without having to rely on "helpers" to track clues from official sources. Jane is a likable gal, as a couple of men that warm up to her in the story find out. Meanwhile, all of Harris's skills are on display, including a plot with just enough intricacy to engage, enough characters to provide variety, and a solid writing style that pleases us from start to finish. We not only recommend this new entree, but will also no doubt anxiously await another outing with Bauer. Will she retire or not ?!

3 out of 5 stars Good knowledge but poorly organized and supported........2006-12-27

I am a big proponent of nutritionally based education, especially as a preventative and treatment source for a myriad of common ailments. As such I find the Wallach's book informative, but am ever frustrated at their scattered writing which leaves many nutritional conclusions unsupported or very vague.

I doubted the craving vs mineral deficiency connection but was quickly proven wrong as I stepped up my daily intake to 200% of both vitamins and minerals 2x per day (100% each time). After doing that, all cravings were gone and have stayed gone for over 3 months. Wow!!!

The Wallach's sell their own blend of supplements, most of which are ridiculously overpriced, even for a premium product. I know, because I research this stuff to death. The multivitamine/mineral supplement can be easily had for half the cost by going to sites like ReNutra/Lyflo or others without getting gouged to death.

Good information - but be prepared for frustrating times as you thirst for properly developed thoughts, conclusions, and an easily followable direction in the writing.

Still, I thank the Wallach's for their benefiting the Nutrionally based prevention and mitigation of disease.

Voices of Hell' Kitchen is just that--an aggregate of voices, attitudes and lifestyles embodied in the residents of one of America's most fascinating neighborhoods. Amodeo's fictional New Yorkers range from aspiring actors to mysterious dogwalkers, and each of their stories is as believable as it is extradordinary. This is as close to the real Hell's Kitchen as one can get without a subway ticket, and indeed it may inspire a few readers to ante up the fare.

5 out of 5 stars A Unique and Moving Set of Stories.......2006-11-06

John Amodeo has created a realistic survey of the many types of characters who reside in today's changing Hell's kitchen. Each chapter is a vignette of a different character's dreams, hopes, accomplishments, and responses to the changes that have come to Hell's Kitchen during the past twenty years. Amodeo gets inside of the characters' thoughts, hearts and experiences to give the reader a desire to know even more about them. The book is also an easy, fast read. I recommend it to anyone who has lived in a neighborhood, whether it be in New York City or in any other neighborhood in America. Although the setting of the stories in this book is in Hell's Kitchen, the reader will definitely meet characters that he or she might meet anywhere else.

Book Description

What kind of recipes spring from a restaurant said to be the spot where New Orleans' French Quarter meets New York City's Hell's Kitchen? Hot, flavorful dishes with attitude and punch. Yo, Blacken This! includes original recipes from the best Cajun restaurant in New York City.

Chef Greg Tatis, a native New Yorker, trained with legendary Cajun Chef Paul Prudhomme for 8 years at the famous K. Paul's in New Orleans. He then returned to New York to open the Delta Grill in December 1997. His recipes include Cajun favorites with a personalized interpretation such as jambalaya, crawfish etouffee and alligator sauce, blackened portabello mushrooms with smoked salmon salad and pepper crusted duck breast in raspberry sauce.

The Delta Grill is a comfortable, funky roadhouse-style restaurant within spitting distance of Times Square and NYC's theater district. Patrons are likely to look up from their Fried Green Tomatoes and Dixie beer on any given night to see the starting lineup from the New York Knicks, actors, rappers and movie critics.

Yo, Blacken This! features the story of this exciting little reataurant along with great southern recipes with unmistakable New York attitude.

This is an interesting concept. Only in america, for two cents plain. And other cliches. But seriously, its a good book with more than the average number of recipes you can use. They look nice, aside from the alligator, and they're well explained. They taste good, and I want to go to the restaurant when I am in NY. Enjoy !

    Book Description

The enthralling and evocative story of tough Depression-era bandits who vowed to make something of themselves, even if that meant defying the stone walls of America’s most infamous prison, by a writer who grew up in Sing Sing’s shadow.

During an era of never-ending breadlines and corrupt cops, no place churned out budding crooks more efficiently than Hell’s Kitchen. Neighborhood loyalties bonded gangs of immigrant sons who were looking for a way out of 1930s New York, and waterfront kids like Whitey Riordan paid the bills with small-time hustling. But when enterprising crook Patches Waters invited Whitey into the Shopping Bag Gang, Whitey jumped at the big score. Bold black headlines announced the group’s string of successful heists, but the gravy train abruptly halted in 1939 when someone squealed and police captured most of the gang. Patches and Whitey were sent up the river to Sing Sing.

Westside connections couldn’t help much there, in the infamous Hudson River prison that had housed convicts for more than a century. In Sing Sing the boys had to answer to veteran warden Lewis Lawes, a revolutionary reformer who preferred trust and rehabilitation to old standbys like the lash and the yoke. Progressive indeed, but nothing changed the fact that Whitey and Patches, along with more than 2,800 other men, faced a future of endless days in a cage of limestone, cement, and steel. Perhaps inevitably, their thoughts turned to escape.

A string of well-publicized jailhouse riots and breakouts captured the country’s interest in the 1930s, and though prisons kept stepping up security, convicts continued to crash out. When Patches encountered an old cellblock crony who had stumbled upon a way out, he pieced together a daring escape plot involving purloined guns, counterfeit keys, precision timing, a complex network of outside accomplices, and the kind of outsize bravado that would have made Dillinger proud. Unable to resist the thought of freedom, Whitey signed on. On Easter Sunday 1941, the three embarked upon the most sensational breakout in the prison’s history. Leaving four men dead and indelibly staining the reputation of the nation’s most famous warden, the Westside boys transcended their wildest dreams, only to find themselves backed to the edge of a wide, dark river.

Meticulously researched and beautifully written, Crash Out is a gritty, page-turning saga that reveals how the career of one resilient hustler can illuminate a sliver of Americana.

A riveting account of the boldest escape in Sing Sing history and the gangster culture that birthed the defiant bandits, Crash Out is a gripping historical epic set against the fascinating backdrop of Depression-era New York.

5 out of 5 stars A step back in time........2007-07-28

This book tells the tragic story of Whitey Riordan who was executed for murder after a murderous breakout from Sing Sing Prison in 1941, this book contends that he was not a killer and l agree with it. However the book is more than that it is a well researched and written historical book that brings to back to life for the reader a time, place and people and tells their story.

The book is divided into three parts, part one tells the story of the lives of Whitey and the Shopping Bag Gang and gives a good overall perspective of life in Hells Kitchen of New York in the early 20th century. It even delves back to the history of the area pre Hells Kitchen to colonial times, with running streams and meadows and later farms. Whitey's family like many endured hard times and did as best as they could to survive. Whitey's gradual descent into a life of crime is well documented as are the lives of his fellow criminals.

Part two deals with Whiteys time in Sing Sing prison and contains some details of the day to day operations of the jail and its interaction with the town of Ossining where it is located. Some history of Sing Sing prison, including the reforms of Warden Lawes is also described. It was a tough place to survive and prison staff were liable to deliver a boot or a fist to keep order. Also described is the pre breakout time and the planning and circumstances that gave rise to the break out.

Part three deals with the breakout and what a botched, bloody and pointless breakout it was, innocent, decent people killed and one escapee killed though his own stupidity and the other two caught within 24 hours. This is a well written informative book and is ideal for the true crime history fan.

5 out of 5 stars From Hell's Kitchen to Sing Sing's Death House.......2006-01-27

Author David Goewey has given us a detailed account of members of the so-called Shopping Bag Gang that prowled the Hell's Kitchen area on the west side of Manhattan during the 1930's. The book is divided into three sections. The first section is devoted to the heyday of the Shopping Bag gang and their antics. Part two tells us about the environment of Sing Sing prison under the revolutionary rule under Warden Lewis Lawes who was often accused of running a prison focused on rehabilitation rather than punishment. Lawes lasted longer than any other warden of the institution (over 20 years) and had his watch marred by this one breakout in 1941 which unfortunately killed two guards. Part three is devoted to the escape, capture, and execution of two members involved in the escape. I found part three to be especially riviting to read and very well done. Prisoners often feared the sound of bloodhounds coming after them and what the dogs would do to them when confrontations arose. In reality the dogs would playfully jump on the individual, slobber their faces with their tongue, and wag their tail. Mention of how the term "third degree" came into use is told when people applying for a higher position in the Masons would face severe questioning by other members. This, in turn, was applied to suspects, or in this case by escaped convicts, who were often physically beaten by authorities to extract confessions. I did find a minor error on page 188 which is really unrelated to the story. The author mentions the Washington Senators beating the Baltimore Orioles in a baseball game. The Baltimore Orioles didn't join the major leagues until 1954 when they moved from St. Louis. The game the author refers to had to be Washington defeating the St. Louis Browns, not the Baltimore Orioles. Despite this the book rates a strong five stars.

    5 out of 5 stars A Great Read!!.......2005-12-19

I loved this book. It is a gripping tale and Goeway does a great job of telling the story. He captures the desperation of the prisoners at the same time that he manages to evoke an important period in American history. Thank you, David Goeway!
