5 out of 5 stars Good for review.......2007-09-02

As a student returning to calculus, after many years without touching the subject, I found that the hardest part for me was just going through the simple mechanics of algebra. Conceptually early calculus is not that difficult, but often to get the right answer it requires a lot of intricate algebraic manipulations. I found myself making easy mistakes and my calculus book less than helpful at refreshing the algebra I needed to know (and had forgotten). I ended up getting this book as well as the precalculus and calculus books by schaums, but have found the Intermediate Algebra book to be by far the most helpful. The pre-calculus and calculus books glossed over areas where I really needed more examples. The practice problems helped me to eliminate simple mistakes in my work and gave me more confidence going into complex problems. I noticed that classmates of mine who were struggling got caught up on concepts because they didn't have a rock solid understanding of the algebra. Transformations that the instructor took for granted eluded them because they were still trying to figure out where the negative sign went. While there are some errors, for the cost I really couldn't recommend this book enough - especially when compared to my $175 Calculus book. It helped me get an A in second semester calculus.

4 out of 5 stars Some quirks that need to be worked out.......2007-07-12

People learn in many different ways and my way is to know exactly what is going on in the problem and why the equation took that next step. Many of the problems in the book do this but there are a nagging few that do not show what formula they used. Of course the skills are built upon each other and it assumed that you remember the past formulas. For me though this doesn't always work out.

It is a great outline for those who need to brush up on their skills and it also helps out the beginners. Take lots of notes and remember the formulas to help out in later chapters. For the price it is a great help and I am happy to have made this purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Better than elementary.......2006-04-19

This book, I must say, is very good companion for any high school or middle school students who want to master the subject. I like this intermediate algebra better than the elementary one--simply more interesting. But to well prepare yourself for college math/algebra, you only need this book: the most useful problem or resource book that I have ever read in English :
Algebra: A study aid for self-education
ASIN: B0007C0IUS
in my school library. This book is just so useful that every problem is provided with sufficient background information. You can ACTUALLY MASTER the subject by working out the problems ON YOUR OWN--solutions are provided to every problem as well. Moreover, every pair of problems is typical, help you sharpen your skills while teaching you much about it. If you are ambitious and want to get even better in the subject, check it out. It's very user-friendly but very informative and interesting!

5 out of 5 stars Very Happy.......2006-03-01

I purchased this book to make a quick review of Math and help my son. I am so happy that I will buy the entire collection from elementary Algebra to Calculus including Differencial equations, Geometry and Trigonometry. Great help for those who need a solid foundation in Math. You can't go wrong with Schaum's Outline.

But as Andy relaxes in his office, imagining ways to spend his money, he has an unexpected visitor: a stranger who confesses to decapitating and burning a man-cooly relying on the confidentiality of attorney-client privilege. When an innocent man is charged with the crime, Andy decides to take on the case. But the case becomes personal when, in a stunning development, Andy's client is exonerated and his girlfriend, Laurie Collins, is accused of the crime. In the case of his life, Andy must prove Laurie's innocence in this thrilling mystery from the always inventive David Rosenfelt.

5 out of 5 stars A powerhouse novel!!.......2007-09-04

This book is truly un-put-downable. I finished it last night around 1 AM and there was no good place to stop from like page 100 till the end. So I would start it on a Friday night if I were you. Rosenfelt is one the best authors I've read, and I read a ton.

5 out of 5 stars First Degree.......2007-03-10

David Rosenfelt has such a wonderful and "real" sense of humor - you become involved with his characters and never want his stories to end. Read them all - you'll be delighted!

5 out of 5 stars Get comfortable. You won't be able to put this book down.......2006-06-27

Please read the previous book in this series, Open and Shut before reading this book. It will introduce you to Andy and other main characters. This is the second book in this page turning series. There is a great story line, interesting and loveable characters, including Andy's dog, Tara. Don't bother reading the "what this book is about blurb" on the inside jacket, or Amazon summaries. Some of the humor is laugh out loud funny. If you are looking for a quick, easy and fun read I highly recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Follow-up to Open And Shut!.......2005-11-05

Rosenfelt succesfully follows up his debut novel, Open And Shut, with First Degree. Rosenfelt is becoming one of the freshest voices among today's mystery writers due to his ability to provide interesting plots, credible courtroom drama, lots of humor and well-developed major and minor characters. Andy Carpenter, the main character who is a wise-cracking suburban New Jersey defense attorney, is one that stays in your mind even after you finish the book and is one that I'm looking forward to 'hang out' with in his future legal adventures. Plus, his dog, Tara, is one I wish I had. The only factor that keeps me from giving First Degree a 5-star rating is that Rosenfelt spent a bit too much time on humor to serve as "filler" to stretch out the length of this book (which is only 256 pages). Despite this very minor criticism I highly recommend First Degree when you're in the mood for a fast-paced, easy read. However, you might want to first consider reading Open And Shut, which I think will further your appreciation of First Degree.

4 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable........2005-08-21

Great characters, dialogue and courtroom scenes are the strength of this book. Having grown up in Jersey (New Jersey, that is), I love books set there. I did figure out the bad guy farily early, so that was a slight weakness. But this was a quick, enjoyable read, with a good plot, suspense and a bit more depth that his first book, "Open and Shut." I would, however, recommend reading the series in order.

Book Description

The manuscripts are a veritable gold-mine of Masonic information, for they constitute, as far as we are aware, the most complete set of early Scottish Rite rituals in the United States. Each of the five books was copied from rituals belonging to Giles F. Yates, Thirty-third Degree, a member of both the Northern and Southern Supreme Councils, who had most, if not all, of the manuscript rituals of Mr. Frederick Dalcho, one of the founders of the first Supreme Council. At one point the original Dalcho manuscripts were lost or sold, and when the collection was rediscovered in 1938, it had several rituals missing. Our collection, however, is complete, from the Fourth through the Thirty-third Degree. Most of the rituals are dated 1801 and 1802, which we believe indicates they are copies of the Dalcho versions, although we have not had the opportunity to compare them with the originals in the archives of the Northern Jurisdiction. For some unknown reason, however, each is designated as belonging to either the "first series" or "second series," while some rituals have apparently been switched around in numerical order. For example, one ritual is labeled the "30th, 31st and 32nd Degree of the First Series (1802)...now 32nd, called Sovereign, or Sublime Prince of the Royal Secret;" although it seems to have become the 32nd Degree only after a "31st Degree Tribunal of Grand Inquiring Commander" ritual appeared (dated 1804). Another revision is the "29th Degree, Grand Master Ecose...Knight of St. Andrew." Following the degree is the outline of an apparent 1806 revision which radically departs from the earlier form, yet is similar to that found in Albert Pike's Magnum Opus (1857). Did Pike have this 1806 ritual? Possibly, yet, we know from Pike's writings that he didn't have all these rituals. Pike's revisions were done without the benefit of reading the original rituals contained in this set. One of the most interesting rituals is the "33rd Degree Sovereign Grand Inspector General." Not only is it the earliest form of this degree, but it includes a copy of a "Letter of Credence" (our modern "Patent") and an early version of the Constitutions, Statutes and Regulations. For all who have wondered what the original Scottish Rite rituals were like, this set, and only this set may answer the question. The rituals in this set are not the same as the Francken MS. These are the only set of its kind. If you want authentic information on the Scottish Rite, this book will become your prime set of source documents. Volume 2 (the 19th - 33rd) starts after page 222.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Root.......2006-02-08

If you are a Scottish Rite Mason and were impressed with the degree work through which you went, you will be amazed to find how far we are from our historical ritualistic roots.

If you are a Scottish Rite Mason of the Southern Jurisdiction, then you are doubtlessly aware of Albert Pike's revision of these rituals. After reading this, you may think he should have left them alone.

These rituals are not for the faint of heart. The 30th Degree as exposed in this book which made the hair stand up on my arms! I also enjoyed unapoligetic Christian nature of the 18th Degree, something made less obvious and/or purposely obscured by Pike in his revisions. (Don't get me wrong, I'm a big Pike fan, but these rituals are, in my opinion, in no way inferior to what he put forward and which are now the basis of ritual work in the Southern Jurisdiction.)

Highly recommended reading for those interested in the evolution of Masonic thought and practice...

5 out of 5 stars An Historical Masterpiece!.......2005-09-19

Exhaustive, penetrating, and wholly satisfying compilation of Masonic Scottish Rite Rituals...you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars A great way to decrease time in college and save money!.......2004-05-23

I have implemented the technics and learning strategies Brad Voeller writes about in his book and I am on my way to finishing my degree in just under 2 years. There is a lot of information out there about Distance Education. It would have ben overwhelming to try to figure it out on my own. This book is a concise way to understand the way Distance learning can work. The accelerated methods have been an incredible boost in the way I learn and think. This is a must read for the person seeking ways to beat the non-traditional methods of education.

5 out of 5 stars A great resource for students preparing for college........2004-03-17

Brad Voeller's book provides some of the most useful information available on the other options for higher education.

I personally have used the information taught in this book to earn my bachelors degree for under $8000 in less than 2 years.

It is a must read reference.

2 out of 5 stars Not terribly useful.......2003-07-18

Sorry can't recommend it. Most of the information is pretty general and can be obtained for free online.

5 out of 5 stars Save money, save time, and enjoy getting your degree........2003-04-01

Voeller's techniques will be a godsend to those who want to obtain their degree on an accelerated schedule and save money in the process. Both practical and envisioning, the author's lively and readable text makes this an accessible guide for highschoolers in a hurry, as well as for the brainy grad-school crowd already using some of these techniques. The Internet is changing the face of higher education and no longer does a student have to settle for mediocre instruction when some of the world's best teachers now offer their courses online. Voeller also guides the student through the process of testing out (CLEP, Regents, etc.), mentored study, and portfolio assessment for academic knowledge learned on the job. His advice on how to find exactly the course you want (or craft your own) is excellent. Though Voeller covers some of the same ground as Dr. John Bear, his information on learning efficiency and retention is a welcome addition to this subject.

Ten years ago a groundbreaking book called The Frog in the Kettle changed what we believe about the evangelical Church and its influence in America. Subsequent books by George Barna have become must reading for church leaders and concerned Christians everywhere. Now Barna takes a fresh look at the Church-where we stand and where we are headed-at the dawn of the new millennium. With revealing statistics from cutting-edge research that illustrate the changing beliefs and attitudes in our society today, this book will clearly show the Church is at a crucial juncture in history-a time of rapid change in which we must begin to anticipate the world's needs in order to meet them.

      3 out of 5 stars It's In The Title.......2006-08-06

It ain't Duncans, but it ain't bad. It's been around for ages, so that says a lot for any book. Hats off to the publisher. Many lodges just want something to keep the craft on their toes and govern their ritual cirriculum accordingly. Thus, Look To The East demands from Freemasons at least an attentive ear by dint of its compelling title alone. And because of that, an aura of respect and obligation hovers about it.

Look To The East is a good work, good for the fraternity. It's a blue house ritual, and no such lodge can really operate without one. But, in my opinion, the book owes its fraternal popularity to its title and not so much to its contents, which offer nothing exceptionally different from some of the other Masonic rituals in its class. But it remains an overall good and useful tool for the craft.
