A great book.......2007-05-27
Winter of the Ice Wizard is a great Magic Tree House book. It begins when Jack and Annie get a note from Merlin. They end up with Teddy and Kathleen at the castle of the Ice Wizard. There, they learn that he wrote the note and had kidnapped Merlin and Morgan. In order to save them, they have to find the Ice Wizard's eye. They recieve directions to go to the Hollow Hill, and they do, in the ice Wizard's sleigh. They find the eye and give it to the Wizard. He is sad and mad because they eye doesn't work. Then Teddy and Kathleen bring in the swan maiden, the Wizard's sister, and she tells him that she will forgive him. Then his eye works. They are given back Merlin and Morgan, and the mission is over.
I think that this is a great book. Winter of the Ice Wizard is my favorite Magic Tree House book!

Book Description
With this stunning debut--a marvelous marriage of classic convention and contemporary sophistication--Minette Walters sets a new standard of excellence for the mystery novel.
The three women living in seclusion at an elegant Hampshire country house have long been fodder for village gossip...even whispers of a witches' coven. So when a faceless corpse of uncertain vintage is found in the Streech Grange ice house, Chief Inspector Walsh can't wait to make a case of it.
Lady of the manor Phoebe Maybury, still haunted by Walsh's relentless investigation of her husband's strange disappearance ten years ago, is calm. She and her two housemates--sensitive, charming artist Diana Goode and pretty, earthy Anne Cattrell--seem as puzzled as the police. But do they have something to hide?
While Walsh strives to nail Phoebe for murder, sexy young Detective Sergeant McLoughlin turns his attention to the exasperating and magnetic Anne. Soon his inquiry and his impulses will draw him into a tangled thicket of love, loyalty, and deadly intrigue.
Customer Reviews:
You might want to watch the movie instead.......2007-04-20
An all right who-done-it involving decaying bodies, abused wives and a small town full of vindictive characters appropriate to take on vacation or a long trip. The BBC version with sexy Daniel Craig as the Scots detective and an all-round good cast is much more compelling. I only read it to see how much they had changed the story which it turns out was very little. I will say however that the book's conclusion was better than the movie since McCloughlin (Craig's character) does some fairly unethical things and really should leave the police force which he does in the book.
A great find.......2006-07-09
I've read more British mysteries than I can count and after awhile they all start to blur, but this book was a real stand-out! The plot moves along quickly and yet the writing has substance, and the mystery was so compelling that I finished it in a day. Also, the romantic tension between Anne and Andy was great and amazingly well written...usually romances in the middle of mystery books leave me with a sense of "Yeah, yeah, can we please get back to the actual story now" feeling, but this one was so intriguing!
The Best book I have read this year!.......2005-05-10
This book has a Elizabeth George flavor but better. The twists and turns of the mystery were wonderful. I understand why this book won so many awards. I can't wait to read more from this Author.
Great Mystery Writer.......2005-05-02
Minette Walters is a great mystery writer. The Ice House has everything you could want in a mystery. I could not put it down until I finished reading. I have read her next two books and have ordered more. You will not be disappointed.
A Riveting Mystery With A Cast Of Charismatic Characters.......2005-04-01
When David Maybury disappeared from his home, the Streech Grange Estate, his beautiful, young, red-haired wife, Pheobe, told police he just walked out on her and their two children one evening and never returned. Maybury was known to have been in financial difficulties. His wine business, funded by his wife, which he ran from the cellars of her estate, was virtually bankrupt. It was widely believed that Maybury physically abused Phoebe, although she excused her often bruised face as the result of clumsiness, falls, etc.. After ten days with no sign of the man, the police searched the Grange and the surrounding wood thoroughly, even digging up the Maybury's extensive gardens - to no avail. An overly zealous detective questioned Pheobe to the point of harassment. He also implied she was responsible for her parents death in an auto accident a few years before. Finally the unsolved Maybury mystery was laid to rest in the cold case files.
Ten years later Pheobe Maybury, now in her mid-thirties, is still living at her elegant country home, along with her two best friends from childhood, Anne Catrell, a journalist, and Diana Goode, an interior decorator. The three women are shunned by local society, and much maligned - believed to be witches, lesbians, or both. When a badly decomposed corpse is found in the estate's ice house, two cynical detectives arrive at the scene to investigate. The nightmare of ten years before begins anew. Detective Chief Inspector Walsh was originally in charge of the missing husband case, years ago. He has never lost his conviction that Pheobe murdered David, and is sure the unidentifiable body must be his. It appears Walsh, with the one-track mind, has his own agenda. Detective Sergeant Andy McLoughlin, a charismatic but troubled man, looks at the clues, both recent and past, along with the various testimonies and begins to take a different view from his superior's. To arrive at the truth, however, he must examine his own demons and motivations.
Author Minette Walters won the John Creasey Award for Best First Crime Novel with "The Ice House." This unputdownable mystery is richly deserving of the prize and much praise. Phoebe, Anne and Diana are complex characters and their relationships with each other, and with the two detectives, really make the book special - a delightful and thrilling read. I was very much taken with the characters, more so than usual, and cared very much what happened to them. There is much more than a murder mystery, or two, or three, going on in this suspenseful novel. There are unexpected twists and turns along with a number of fascinating subplots. I highly recommend "The Ice House."

Great Nonfiction Companion to Magic Tree House books.......2007-05-20
Personally, I am not very excited by the fictional series of Magic Tree House books. The extra stuff about Jack and Annie are very boring to me and I've found many students who feel the same way. What excites me and I find interesting are the non-fiction companion books. They are 10 times better than the fiction books. I love to read them and learn a lot from reading them.
Sabertooths & the Ice Age.......2007-01-18
My son really enjoys the entire series of The Magic Tree House and the guidebooks. The stories keep him turning pages, in addition it provides additional learning material on the subjects being written about. Once they start reading with book one, children will want to continue the journey in the following books.

Not Hot Enough!.......2006-01-28
I think Nora has spoiled me with her more recent writings. "Hot Ice" is an early attempt at suspense and romance, however, it was fairly boring throughout the story when ice cream heiress Whitney MacAllister and professional thief, Douglas Lord meet up. Their travels to find the hidden treasure dating back to the French Revolution and Marie Antoinette take them all the way to Madagascar. I think if Nora had written this story today, it would have been a real cliffhanger because the basic storyline is a good one. There were times during the story that I was actually "hooked" however, those moments were not long enough for this novel to be considered one of her success stories. Whitney is a spoiled rich girl and Doug is the typical good looking, strong, smart and very slick thief in her life. Toward the end of the book, things do get interesting when master mind villain, Dimitri and his bad boys come face to face with our hero and heroine and a long chase through New York, DC, and onto the jungles of Madagascar finally culminates. I enjoyed watching both main characters grow to a certain point by the end of their journey, however, the current sparks that Nora can grab from her audience with her outstanding writing is not in this novel.
Don't waste your money.......2005-07-01
I usually enjoy reading Nora Roberts books when I want a light hearted romantic change of pace. However, I found it difficult to get through this book. I felt like I had to force myself to keep reading. It was a bit too drawn out and even boring in parts. There was a great deal of suspense at times, but in between it lacked the page turning quality that I would have liked.
I noticed that the book was written in 1987 which explains some of it. This had to have been one of her earlier works and certain aspects of the story would never be an option now. For instance, Whitney uses credit cards everywhere to pay for things. In todays day and age we all know that leaving a paper trail when you are trying to elude a powerful enemy is asking for trouble. Other parts, just show their age.
I am sorry to say that this may be the first one of her books that I did not enjoy as much as I had hoped for. It's not even worth checking out from the library. Skip this one. There are plenty of others by this author that are far better.
Not Hot, But Lukewarm!.......2005-05-05
HOT ICE is an interesting tale about a wealthy woman and a first rate thief. Nora Roberts likes to use this premise and has used it in several of her books. However, each has different entwined subplots that make them each unique. She does use a few of the same guidelines:
1. The woman is beautiful and usually wealthy.
2. The thief (usually male) is always gorgeous and street savvy.
I personally am waiting for her to write about a really homely thief and a poor woman; now that would be an interesting concept, right? Ok, so maybe that's why I'm not a published author and Nora Roberts is one of the best!
One of the variances in HOT ICE from her other books is that the race to find treasure begins in Manhattan and ends in Madagascar. The usual trials and tribulations occur: passion trying to be denied, a rival enemy hot on their tails, etc. HOT ICE is more along the lines of pure romance with a little mystery thrown in for balance. In my opinion, Roberts's better efforts have more mystery and less romance, as she's excellent at setting the stage for suspense.
HOT ICE is a good story, but not fantastic. I wouldn't label it a "stop light book" as is my term for a book that is absolutely impossible to put down, so much so that you read a few lines while waiting at a red light in your car! I would much rather recommend MONTANA SKY, SANCTUARY, THE REEF or another more recent Roberts novel. However, if you've already read these and wish to fill some time, this would be the book for you!
The First of Many.......2004-11-08
The first book I've read by Nora Roberts, Hot Ice surely has sold me on this talented author- understandably, a best seller. Through fast paced story telling, multi-dimensional characters and exceptionally detailed settings, Ms. Roberts weaves a tale of adventure, romance and suspense. If you're looking to get swept away into a real page turner, I highly recommend this entertaining, well written book.
Great Book.......2004-07-11
At first I was reluctant to read this book, since I usually don't like books where there is a lot of suspense, and where there is killing, but since it was by Nora Roberts, I decided to give it a chance. I LOVED it. The way she wrote it made you fall in love with the characters. It is impossible to put down once you start, and truly keeps you on the edge of your seat. One of her best books.

Customer Reviews:
Lord of Ice.......2007-08-26
It was a wonderful book. I would recommand it to any reader interested in historical romances.
A Nice Romance (Military Style).......2007-05-15
This was the first book I've read by this author and I enjoyed it. I thought it was well written and nicely edited. I believe a "good romance" book needs to involve female characters that I would consider a friend and a romantic male character. This book has those qualities. I don't agree with the "spotlight review" dated 2002 that this was a father/daughter relationship because they did not know each other until her appointed guardian died and then Damien went to tell her. She was 19 by then and they were attracted to each other. She was too old to be left in the "girls school" anyway. Damien proved to be a true hero in many things. A Colonel and war hero capturing Napolean and facing "war terrors" for his time in service. Damien was an all around "nice guy" and helped Miranda solve several "problems." Don't want to give away the story by telling too much. I enjoyed it and I'm rather picky.
Thoroughly enjoyed it! .......2007-02-12
I just finished reading Lord of Ice (read Lord of Fire yesterday), and I have to say I enjoyed Damien's story much more than Lucien's. I "connected" with Damien and Miranda, and thought their story was a great deal more poignant than Lucien's. His vulnerability (a hero prerequisite in a Gaelen Foley novel) is -- in my opinion -- much more believable than Lucien's -- there's nothing more sexy than a man who blushes shyly in front of the woman he loves. Miranda was a strong match for him; after she vows to behave, she does.
Just an all-around good book. Entertaining and thoughtful. What more can you ask? Ms. Foley's done a great job with her "Knight Miscellany" series. Now I'm starting Lady Jacinda's story -- !
I'd rate this 10 stars if I could..........2007-01-11
I loved this book. Damien was everything I love in a romance hero: strong, sexy, and kind-hearted. Miranda was spunky and fun. It did not surprise me at all that Ms. Foley wrote Miranda as a strong willed woman who falls head over heels in love, submitting to him as another reviewer wrote. She was seeking adoration from the beginning of the novel and she found it with Damien.
I would recommend this to anyone looking for a quick read that entertains as well as touches the heart. Bravo, Ms. Foley!
Damien is another hot Knight!.......2007-01-02
There are many other long reviews, so this will be brief. This is the 3rd book in the Knight Miscellany series, following The Duke and Lord of Fire. I suggest they be read in order so you will be more familiar with the other family members that have a part in this book. I liked Damien the war hero and the sexual tension between him and his grown-up ward, Miranda. The story is fairly simplistic and predictable, but has good entertainment value.

Realistic pictures.......2006-01-28
I have read the other reviews and understand why others have problems with the text. The pictures alone are WONDERFUL - so realistic and makes you feel you are right there with her use of color. I HAVE heard of all the animals she mentions as I teach kindergarten. These are very familiar animals used in other Arctic books I have read to my kids. I will be truthful in that the text doesn't lend itself to be asked "TO READ AGAIN AND AGAIN!" If you want the book for the pictures, you will be pleased. The book's entirity I would leave for first grade through fourth who could study the use of her wordings in the story. I rated the book higher because it is a very good book if used with the right age of children.
Wording is poetically written.......2005-10-02
I gave this book a 3 because my 5yr old loves it. He's fascinated with the animals only. He will not sit through the entire book as I read to him. I think partly because the words are too poetically written for a young age group. This is one book that he can't memorize page by page. Some of the animals in the book, I've never heard before (for instance, caribou, lemming, ptarmigan.) The book isn't exciting to me and this is one I dread reading to my son.
This book is better than a one-star!.......2001-06-25
A very quick read, granted, but the illustrations are beautiful. This is the kind of book youngsters will want to look at again and again. I haven't compared it to Yolen's other books, so maybe I would give it less, but for now it deserves a 4.
"Welcome to the Ice House" by Jane Yolen.......2000-03-25
Owning wonderful "Alphabeastiary" and "Owl Moon" by Yolen mistakenly led us to this book. Text is barely verbal and vacant, certainly not any great addition to our science collection, as Booklist review tends to indicate. Splitting a sentence between four pages is not our idea of reading. Any parents who are reading for literary enhancement should find something else. The star we give is for illustrations, nothing more. The illustrator should have put as much effort into the interior as she did the cover. Too bad, overall disappointment.

Alibi on Ice is a pulse thumping, page-turner rich in diabolical maneuvering, murder, and ayhem set in Seattle and on the icy slopes of Mount Rainier.
Customer Reviews:
A worthy read.......2006-09-21
I grabbed this book while on vacation out in the Northwest. I had spent some time on Mt. Ranier hiking, and thoroughly enjoyed following Mr. Small's murderer up and down the treacherous trails of that mountain.
It's a good suspense thriller, that transports you to Mt. Ranier, it's ice caves and glaciers. Its characters are well done, and its ending a surprise.
A very satisfying read.
Strap on your climbing gear and grab your magnifying glass for this one!.......2006-06-09
Ben Small is a lawyer, and ALIBI ON ICE is about lawyers, corrupt and murdered lawyers. But the action in this taut police procedural doesn't take place in a courtroom. It occurs on Washington's towering Mount Ranier. And a particular strength of the story is Small's use (in the tradition of Dame Agatha) of the setting not just as backdrop but as a character itself, forcing the human actors to confront the mountain's crevasses, snowfields, glaciers and avalanches as sharply as they confront one another.
The antagonist, Emery Boyd, is a studly but sociopathic climber who uses the mountain to kill and hide the evidence as indifferently as he uses women for sexual gratification and to get information about the police probe into the disappearance of his law firm partner, Herman Klein. Boyd's alibi seems iron-clad, or rather ice-clad: he was seen on the mountain at the time of the murders.
Amy Galler, a female homicide detective from Seattle, goes to the mountain under cover, determined to continue the investigation and confront Boyd. But an unexpected meeting with another climber -- ironically, Boyd's best mountaineering buddy -- leads her into romance, vulnerability and danger.
Small slowly spins up the tension into a craggy climax, moving the characters around like chessmen with ice axes. And the climbing details make it clear that Small has spent more than a few hours on the mountain himself. The ending is terrific: satisfying but completely unexpected. I never saw it coming.
This is an excellent first novel, and I look forward to Small's next one.
trying out the "thriller" genre!.......2006-06-03
One of the threads I like to talk about to readers is not to pay too much
attention to labels. I mention that labels are a marketing advice and most
books cannot be so definitively described and if the reader reads only the
books that are labeled the type of book they usually enjoy, they will miss
some great stories. I, of course, have my own favorite "types" of stories
(I'm an avowed anglophile--you know what I usually read) and the "thriller"
genre has not been high on my TBR list.
Mea culpa. I recently picked up Ben F. Small's suspense thriller ALIBI ON
ICE and was immediately caught up by the depth of characterization, the fun
of learning about something new to my experience (in this case, mountain
climbing!) and the mesmerizing settings that I assumed (never
assume...) would be absent in an action-oriented book. All of which shows
how narrow-minded I've been all these zillion years!
This was a most entertaining and enjoyable read. The most fascinating
quality of ALIBI ON ICE to me is that the reader knows right off who the bad
guy is, and, believe me, this guy is BAD. Rarely do I yelp out loud from
surprise, but I did while reading the first chapter! The excitement comes
from determining how this truly unpleasant character will be caught and
caught he gets in an amazing climax. I also love stories that take me new
places and I'm relatively confidant that if marooned on an icy mountain, I
have learned enough to get myself safely home, if only in my own mind and if
only on my backside.
So don't waste time the way I did, try something new!

The Margot O'Banion & Max Skull Mystery Series
Action Filled Debut.......2006-05-10
If you like action thrillers, this should be a pleaser. Snowy, treacherous Mount Rainier is a major character in ALIBI ON ICE, Ben Small's debut novel. You'll find colorful landscapes as you trudge up the mountain with veteran climbers, learning firsthand what it's like to be there. Emery Boyd, the villain, whom you meet on page one, is as despicable as they come. After murdering a federal judge to keep him from revealing a blackmail plot, Boyd finds it necessary (and enjoyable) to keep eliminating those who get too close to the truth.
The story is filled with interesting, believable characters. They include Detective Amy Galler, who suspects Boyd is a murderer, and Emery's long-time mountain climbing partner, John Whitney. The plot hangs around the disappearance of a partner in Boyd's Seattle law firm, Herman Klein, who was hired to settle the dead judge's estate. Boyd has what looks like a foolproof alibi, being lost in a snowstorm on Mount Rainier at the time of Klein's apparent murder. But Amy Galler follows her suspicions, attempting to enlist Whitney in an effort to break his friend's alibi. Things go from bad to worse, and it appears Boyd has engineered another triumph.
There's also a well-drawn, sleazy newspaper reporter who succeeds in generally gumming up the works. You'll have to read the book to get the rest of the story. And the ending has a neat twist. According to his website, Ben Small has another thriller in the works. If it's as good as this one, you won't want to miss it, either.
ON TOP OF THE MOUNTAIN.......2005-08-23
Ben has gone straight to the top of the mountain with this, his first novel. It's a real thriller and a book that you won't want to put down. You can't wait to learn more about the dark-sided Emory, the ever resourceful Amy and the other characters that Ben has created. This is an easy read, fast-paced story that you won't soon forget. And, what a surprise ending!

The Ninja book is scary for younger children........2007-03-29
The Treehouse series is very good overall. We read 2-3 chapters a night as part of the bedtime routine for our 3 1/2 year old. The stories hold her interest and there are just enough illustrations to anxoiusly await the page to turn. Her vocabulary has also increased due to some less common words and names used as part of the stories.
A word of caution. The Ninja story is scary for younger children and the illustrations are frightening and creepy. We had to throw this book out in the trash.
