Money maven Suze Orman's latest book, Women & Money addresses the complicated (and often dysfunctional) relationship women have with personal finance. Orman's direct, non-condescending style is perfect for this subject matter--she begins with the premise that "Women can invest, save, and handle debt as well and skillfully as any man" and then tackles the important question--"So why don't they?" Designed to educate and inspire, Women & Money also offers a "Save Yourself Plan," a five-month program that "delivers genuine long-term financial security." Want to know more? Watch a video message from Suze below, and take a gander at the first chapter of Women & Money--you'll be "controlling your destiny" in no time. --Daphne Durham

Read the First Chapter of Women & Money
For Women Only
I never thought I'd write a book about money just for women. I never thought it was necessary. So then why am I doing just that in my eighth book? And why now? Let me explain. All my previous books were written with the belief that gender is not a factor on any level in mastering the nuts and bolts of smart financial management. Women can invest, save, and handle debt just as well and skillfully as any man. I still believe that--why would anyone think differently? So imagine my surprise when I learned that some of the people closest to me in my life were in the dark about their own finances. Clueless. Or, in some cases, willfully resisting doing what they knew needed to be done. I'm talking about smart, competent, accomplished women who present a face to the world that is pure confidence and capability. Do you mean to tell me that I, Suze Orman, who make my living solving the financial problems of total strangers, couldn't spot the trouble brewing so close to home? I don't think I'm blind; I just think that these women became very, very good at hiding their troubles from me.Why not? They had years of practice hiding them from themselves.

Book Description
Why is it that women, who are so competent in all other areas of their lives, cannot find the same competence when it comes to matters of money?
Suze Orman investigates the complicated, dysfunctional relationship women have with money in this groundbreaking new book. With her signature mix of insight, compassion, and soul-deep recognition, she equips women with the financial knowledge and emotional awareness to overcome the blocks that have kept them from making more out of the money they make. At the center of the book is The Save Yourself Plan—a streamlined, five-month program that delivers genuine long-term financial security. But what’s at stake is far bigger than money itself:
It’s about every woman’s sense of who she is and what she deserves, and why it all begins with the decision to save yourself.

Great gift!.......2007-10-01
Bought this for a good friend who was widowed a year ago and had not been involved in finances during the marriage. She is digging herself out of some financial challenges and she said the book made her feel really good about her progress. Highly recommend!!

Suze Orman Shares Investing Common Sense with Her Book Women & Money ~ Owning the Power to Control Your Destiny
By Lisa Manyon [...]
Money is a topic you either embrace or avoid. Orman's book delivers straight talk on investing for women and building individual wealth.
Personally I've always know just enough about investing to put some money away each month and I rely on financial advisors to steer me in the right direction.
Suze shares a candid look at her life and how she got to where she is now. Plus she offers a no nonsense approach to making sure women begin to really think about taking care of their own business.
With an uplifting vein of optimism about what is possible throughout the book, Orman successfully illustrates traits and tactics to help women thoughtfully approach investing.
Orman's 8 qualities of wealthy women have been shared on national talk shows and cannot be stressed enough.
Qualities 1 and 2 are harmony and balance. These are said to be the most important qualities because they are the foundation for all other qualities.
Quality 3 is courage. Orman writes that "Courage gives harmony expression. When your thoughts and feelings are one, courage helps you manifest them in the form of words and actions."
Quality 4 is generosity. Orman points out that woman tap into this almost too quickly. We tend to be overly generous with our time, support, love and money. The true measure of generosity, according to Orman, is being able to allow money to come into your hands and out through your heart.
This was a concept I can relate to. Orman challenges women to look at why and what they give and how it makes them feel. She also offers six rules for giving (but, you'll have to grab a copy of the book to find out what these are).
Quality number 5 is happiness. According to Orman when you find the courage to live your life in harmony and balance, you understand and practice generosity, happiness will spontaneously appear.
And perhaps the most important point she shares about happiness is this; "Happiness is not a luxury. It is a necessity for true wealth."
Quality number 6 comes in the form of wisdom. Who doesn't want to be wiser?
According to Orman, wisdom is more than intellectual and not directly related to education. Wisdom is an express result of tapping into your core beliefs to make the right decisions for yourself.
The 7th quality is cleanliness and is all about the importance of order and organization. A laundry list of situations that subtract from your wealth status include;
- Not knowing where your money is
- Not having a systematized filing system for important documents
- Pulling crumpled bills and receipts out of your purse
- Maintaining a vehicle that looks like a garbage can
- Having closets that are filled with junk and clutter.
I am sure most of us can relate to at least one area we need to work on. I have to admit, as organized as I am, I could relate to a couple of those scenarios. Orman's philosophy really makes sense and I've corrected my personal problem areas. My first order of business was donating clothing I had not used or worn in the past year to charity.
The final quality is beauty. Orman ties all the qualities together by noting beauty is what you achieve when all the qualities are combined.
To some it may seem strange that the qualities of wealthy women are included in a book on investing. However, if you personally don't possess the qualities it will not be as easy for you to achieve your wealth potential.
In addition to the foundational building blocks Orman shares solid advice on choosing the right investor, the importance of having one personal savings account in your name only and discusses investment options in layman's terms so anyone can get started right way.
Very Informative, every woman should read this........2007-09-10
I learned a lot from this book, this book has been very inspirational for me, I feel more in control of my financial future.
Women & Money.......2007-09-08
Suze is an easy read. She doesn't talk down, but she doesn't overwhelm. She offers sound, practical advice that only requires an attitude of resolve. Ladies, you can do it with this advice. It's helping me get better focused, and teaching me practical tips that I wouldn't have known, otherwise. Very, very easy read. Entertaining as well as educational.

Customer Reviews:
Changed my life the day I started reating.......2007-10-09
This book is great. I was afraid it would be a lot of lame "You're special!" stuff. Instead Tony gives simple tools that change the way you think and react to emotions and events. I no longer dwell on unimportant small things and instead move forward toward greater things.
I have an older edition, I think from 1992, which was somewhat dated, since it has some humorous and ironic references to "Influential people like Michael Jackson" or the interesting story about a young kid who gave it is all that turned out to be "none other than OJ Simpson".
The exercises were quite helpful and enlightening, this book will make you understand yourself in a new way.
Good book from sketchy infomercial guy.......2007-09-21
First of all I do think this is a powerful book. This is due more to Tony Robbins ability to generate enthusiasm in the reader and his ability to organize already-published materials than it does with his own originality though.
I'm not the biggest Tony Robbins fan nowadays. I've heard him make too many ridiculous, unproven comments on his tapes to completely take him seriously. And his infomercial persona is hard to shake, but at the heart of it this is really powerful book for transformation just like he claims. It's mainly things he picked up from older self-help books and things like NLP but Tony does organize it in a usable fashion and really gets you pumped up to put some changes into effect.
I went through a hard time many years ago and this book helped me turn one of the worst experiences in my life into one of the most productive, so for that I will always have a soft spot for Tony and this book.
I do recommend staying away from his overpriced seminars though. Everything a smart and motivated person needs is already in this book. You do not need to pay a penny more to anyone over the cost of this book if you are serious about making life changes.
I'd also like to point out that this is a tighter, stronger book than his first one, and recommend a new person start here.
A Great Book That Never Claims to be Pure NLP.......2007-09-02
Awaken the Giant has it's place on bookshelves if for no other reason that it is a workable system to empower a person's entire life.
In doing this, Robbins has done an outstanding job to make change techniques applicable to the average person. His previous book, Unlimited Power, conveys Robbins' understanding of NLP and therefore can be claimed to be a book on the subject. The problem with Unlimited Power is that there countless books on NLP by much more reputable and learned authors than Robbins.
Awaken the Giant is a book that extends well past his first works and the way I see it, adds tremendous value to the field of positive psychology. How, I hear you mutter? Awaken the Giant, using NLP and conditioning techniques at its core, is a well thought out and cohesive system of change, rather than a collection of insights and techniques as many pure NLP books are. The book really focuses on taking control of your life and how to do it. It is not a book of fluffy half-theories and heart-warming anecdotes as most self help books are.
Awaken the Giant never claims to be a book on NLP, and, in fact, takes a main premise of NLP - you have all the resources inside you - and helps organise those resources so they work for you, not against you.
The book is a little long, and could have been a bit more concise, however, it is presented in a much user friendly way than Unlimited Power.
As an NLPer, I appreciate the outcome Robbins had in mind for this book - a whole system for the average person couldn't tell you the difference between a metaprogram and a submodality, but is probably frustrated with underachieving.
Real Results in the Real World.......2007-08-13
I bought this book 3 years ago. I was 35, selling cars, making less than $35,000 a year, fat, a smoker, and wondering where all the supposed "promise" I had ever went. I had a few good years in the past, but they were long gone. I didn't just read this book, I consumed it. Like Baptists read the Bible I read this book, and I started a success journal. Now, 3 years later. I work for myself (if you can call doing whatever I want work) and make $10,000 - $15,000 per month. I work out 6 days a week, I don't smoke, every relationship I have with everyone I love is 3x better than it ever has been.
I read "motivation", "self-help" and "how to succeed" books since I was 19 years old. And I did my best to follow them... not much happened in the end. This book, when Tony said "do this", I did it and there was an INSTANT change. Instant change after Instant change turned into the beginnings of a new life after 6 months, the taste of freedom after 18 months, and now unstoppable, unflappable, unimaginable success and happiness for a guy with a high school degree and never a penny in the bank before my next paycheck (until after Tony Robbins). Is this an unvarnished RAVE? You bet! I read this ONE book and applied it to my life. Now I have the life I always wanted.
The good, the bad, and the " LETS MOVE ON ALREADY!!!".......2007-07-26
My review falls some where in the between the reviews discussing the overwhelming amount of FLUFF contained in this book and the fact that Robbins' excercises can work!!! This 500+ page epic should really be revised by robbins to help readers concentrate on the true main points he is making. remove a three quarters of the anecdotes and and integrate the small subjects of vocabulary and metaphors into the bigger more overarching principles and remove about half of the crappy quotes sporadically placed in the book and you might have something worthy of 4 squares or at least 3 1/2. But no matter what read it get the brunt of the book and its message and prepare yourself to not agree and not follow through and its OKAY!!! Mind you the ever so bright eyed and bushy tailed Robbins' himself is absolutely no picture perfect poster child but must still be greatly acknowledged for the work and effort he has put in and the many lives he has empowered and bettered.

Everyone loves a good fable, and this is certainly one. The protagonist is Julian Mantle, a high-profile attorney with a whacked-out schedule and a shameful set of spiritual priorities. Of course it takes a crisis (heart attack) to give Mantle pause. And pause he does--suddenly selling all his beloved possessions to trek India in pursuit of a meaningful existence. The Himalayan gurus along the way give simple advice, such as, "What lies behind you and what lies before you is nothing compared to what lies within you." Yet it is easy to forgive the story's simplicity because each kernel of wisdom is framed to address the persistent angst of Western white-collar professionals. --Gail Hudson

Customer Reviews:
Weak, very weak........2007-09-23
This is terrible writing, at its best, marketed to the masses. The dialogue is so unreal. The characters, you can't even relate to them. It's so hokey, and nothing original. Unrealistic practices, rose meditation, c'mon, I'm to do this for two weeks. There are many, many other better books out there. Trying Being Peace by TNH.
Good luck, and if this book worked for you, great. I reviewed this in a positive mood too.........
This could be the best advice you'll ever receive from one book........2007-08-14
Enormous amount of wisdom is covered here. I finished this thinking that this is one of the best books I've ever read on how to live in this world. I was shocked at the amount of principles covered in this story. I just wasn't expecting what I got from this.
I initially refrained from underlining and marking up my book because I thought I might want to loan it out. So, I took notes. I've since decided that I'm gonna read it again and underline the great parts I want to revisit. Just when I thought this guy had covered most everything, he pulled out even more! This is an awesome book.
Okay, the other nice thing about this is each chapter ends with an action summary. I liked how this wraps up each chapter. So, you get the chance to think about what happened in the story, the points being made, and the great thing is it gives you the techniques.
I read a few reviews where people were criticizing the story. I thought the story was good, with a few weak spots. But the story isn't the main point, it was just the vehicle to deliver the goods.
I loved this book! This is one that I think can definately make a difference in your life. The thing about books like this is, usually people read it once, decide that there is something to it and maybe even make a few changes in their life and a little while later they slide right back into living the way they always have. Reread it, absorb it, and make lasting changes.
Amaizing.......2007-07-06
the situations described in this book reflects my situation in the company I use to work for: work, work, no personal life, filling guilty for a day off ( and that if you ever manage a day off).
it is really a inspiration.
Fun but fluffy.......2007-07-01
This is an easy afternoon read that is kind of enjoyable at first but gradually starts grinding away at your nerves. The story is, as another reviewer noted, both shallow and hackneyed....a rich guy has a health scare and changes his life's direction, blah blah blah....
Bottom line is that there are many many better books that will offer you deeper and more lasting insights into personal growth and enlightenment....one's that immediately come to mind are 'Autobiography of a Yoga' or 'Krishnamurti's notebook'. Come to think of it, pretty much anything by Krishnamurti, including his grocery list, is better written than this piece of fluff.
But, to be fair and "positive", the ideas within are not stupid ones....the problem is that they are blatantly obvious but presented in a breathy and falsely enthusiastic way that suggests that the author is trying (vainly) to turn a molehill into a mountain.
There's nothing wrong with trying to become a more spiritually healthy person, but I recommend that anyone who reads this book continue on to solid authors such as Krishnamurti or Paramahansa Yogananda,
for their works offer much deeper insight into serious life questions.
Good book -Worth reading........2007-06-27
This is a very light read. My spirits were uplifted after reading this book. So I would rate it 5 stars.
Mostly the author has drawn inspirations from Gita and other Vedic books either directly or indirectly but bottom line is that it is a good read.

Letters to Young Black Men
ASIN: 1592402003 |
Book Description
Most people associate Hill Harper with Hollywood, as he's appeared in dozens of films and television shows. But he is just as comfortable in a school auditorium, rousing groups of students with his unique style of real-life wisdom. Having addressed thousands of high-school and middle- school students over the years, Hill is ready to take his message to an even wider audience. Letters to a Young Brother is drawn from the humbling life lessons he learned on the road to his Ivy League education and beyond. Inspired by the countless letters and e-mails he has received from teens, Hill Harper set out to write a series of letters to young people that would catch the attention of even the most reluctant readers.
The result is a motivational but approachable book full of encouragement on a wide array of hot topics, particularly among young African-American and Hispanic men. From the challenges of getting a good education and making it through college to the media's destructive emphasis on material wealth, Letters to a Young Brother delivers eye-opening answers. Reminiscent of Marian Wright Edelman's New York Times bestseller, The Measure of Our Success: A Letter to My Children and Yours, Hill Harper's words will resonate for years to come.
Customer Reviews:
Great role model for black males.......2007-10-04
This book is a great example of the old fact that your environment has nothing to do with your destiny. It entails young black males that even though we are susceptible to many adversities we can either grow from it or let it empower us to become a victim to failure. His stories related to most of the young men that have a single parent and that had nothing to do with his passion to be successful. The less fortunate he was the more fortunate he became. Great book.
Excellent Book.......2007-09-25
I bought this book for my daughter who works within the juvenile justice system in Australia. I read it before sending to her and thought it was really great and think she will fine very helpful within her work
Manifest Your Destiny.......2007-08-24
This book was an excellent, helpful and thought provoking guide to not just males but also females. Each chapter provided insight into an individual's life; with guidance regarding how to address each situation.
Kudos to the author: Hill Harper.
Excellent.......2007-08-07
This is a must read for every young black male, and even female. I loved it! I brought for my 16 year old nephew and his close friends. I also brought a copy for myself to read along and ensure they were reading too.
Letters To A Young Brother.......2007-08-07
This book addresses areas of concern to not only young black males, but all adolescent boys. For example, relationships with mothers, performance in school, gang affiliation, drugs and so on. The fact that it is written by a successful black man, in fact a movie star who draws on his celebrity connections frequently, should pull young readers in. Unfortunately the writer, in my opinion, is unable to sustain interest in the novel because he really has no "novel" insights. It is in the end a sermon by someone who was never really in the trenches, (though sometimes he implies he had a lot in common with his targeted audience) but a child brought up in a privileged family. There are too many overused cliches that sound good, but are difficult to implement. For example, "You never know when a miracle will happen." "Do the thing that frightens you." "Your best self will continually evolve."
OK, just what does that mean to a kid with serious drug, school suspensions, bad home life, missing parents and other issues. Hill's heart is in the right place, and the title is cleverly modeled on Rielke's work, Letters To A Young Poet, but as a teacher looking for some gems with which to inspire my sometimes troubled, insecure, unmotivated, searching, disillusioned, unloved adolescent students, I mined in vain.

Past life regressions are fascinating to consider, but have you ever wondered what happens between lives? In Destiny of Souls hypnotherapist Michael Newton asks dozens of his own patients to describe their lives from the moment of death right up until reincarnation into this world. Newton described this journey in his first book, Journey of Souls, and now takes us back for a second trip that is described in infinitely more detail. Of therapeutic interest is how spirits contact the living to help loved ones they've left behind deal with their grief. Newton assures readers that they will reconnect with those who have gone before them, even their pets. He answers the full range of questions one could ever think to ask about life after death: How can a soul be in heaven and reincarnate at the same time? How are new souls created? How are souls who've done evil on earth punished? These and many other questions are answered with surprising congruity between respondents.
Book Description
In this fascinating sequel to his controversial and popular Journey of Souls, Michael Newton explores what happens to the soul after death. Among other topics of enduring mystery, he addresses angels, ghosts, reincarnation, why certain people are drawn together, and what lessons the soul is intended to learn, casting new light on life's events and relationships.

As someone who's spent the last 35 years uncovering and writing about my own past lives, and studying how the karma from each of them has played out in the events and relationships of my present life, I suppose I bring something of a unique perspective to Dr Michael Newton's extraordinary trilogy, "Journey of Souls," "Destiny of Souls," and "Life Between Lives." Even after uncovering three of my own historically identifiable, though far from famous, past personas, I was still frustrated that neither I, nor any of the writers I had consulted seem to be able to throw any light on the issue of what happens to us between lifetimes.
But then, I discovered the works of Michael Newton, arguably the most important and most fascinating accounts of this entire genre. By directing the focus of his subjects away from their subconscious and toward their super-conscious, it seems Dr Newton succeeded in accessing a spiritual dimension previously untapped by the vast majority of researchers in this field. Once there, he was able to painstakingly document over many years what is undoubtedly one of the most comprehensive, detailed and believable models of what takes place in the afterlife anyone has ever put forward. Most importantly, it portrays in very convincing terms just how each of us goes about planning and designing our future lives. And once we absorb such a concept it becomes difficult for anyone to fail to take responsibility for their own lives, even with all its challenges and disappointments.
As fate would have it, I discovered Newton's works just after reading "Same Soul, Many Bodies" by the prolific Dr Brian Weiss. In it he discusses his experiences with "future life progression" as a technique for inspiring and motivating patients to change the directions of their lives by revealing the potentialities awaiting them in future incarnations, if they can just make the right choices in the here-and-now.
Comparing the claims of Dr Weiss with those of Dr Newton seemed to leave me with something of a paradox, which was namely this: If Dr Newton was correct that when we die we return to the spiritual realm to take on the work of planning and designing our next life, how would it be possible for Dr Weiss to explore our future lives while we are still alive, since the planning process had not taken place yet?
To resolve this conundrum I decided to have a chat with my spirit guide, Prakash. He first reminded me that linear time is only an operable construct in the physical dimension, and that from the perspective of the spiritual realm all physical incarnations co-exist simultaneously in a moment of eternity. Therefore, it follows that all those between life episodes that Dr Newton describes likewise exist in that same simultaneous eternity. The only reason is seems confusing is because Dr Newton is exploring and reporting what appears to be a linear sequence of lives and their related planning episodes, which necessarily skews his perspective due to his viewing the information from his location here in this dimension of linear time.
This gave me an idea. From all of my past lives that I have explored over the last three decades, two have stood out as closely related, even though they were separated by 700 years. The first was my life as Genghis Khan's nephew Yegu, and the second was my life as Field Marshall Count Helmuth von Moltke (the younger), nephew of von Moltke (the elder), his uncle and namesake, the military genius and hero of the Franco-Prussian War who helped Bismarck unite the German Empire. In the first life the plan for me to succeed my uncle Genghis failed, but in the second I did succeed my uncle as Chief of the German General Staff prior to and during the initial phases of WW I. As you might suspect, von Moltke (the elder) was a reincarnation of Genghis Khan.
What occurred to me is that exploring the planning stages of these two incarnations in tandem would provide a rare opportunity to see this whole planning process at its most complex. Fortunately, Dr Newton's third book, "Life Between Lives" was designed as something of a do-it-yourself training manual for just such explorations. So I guess that will be my next project.

Even better than the first book.......2007-07-18
Deeper insight than the first book "Journey of Souls" , couldn't put the book down.
A more detailed "Journey of the Souls".......2007-06-13
Exactly as the subject line says.
Read "Journey of the Souls". If you like that one AND you are into research and detailed info, then this book is for you. If you were convinced by Journey of the Souls and are the type of person that does not like to be bogged down with details, then I'd skip this one... Well unless you want the complete set :)
I am glad I bought it and would buy book 3 if he writes one and it had more detailed case studies.
The Great Lesson of Earth.......2007-06-01
Like JOURNEY OF SOULS, this book is not some trivial, New Age potboiler. I read it cover-to-cover (and intend to do so again) and I have found it to be quite satisfying and believable. It goes into much greater detail than the first volume with many more case studies. An example of the further detail is the chapter on earthly spirits (nature spirits, ghosts, souls in seclusion, discarnates who visit earth, and demons or devas), and the chapter on soul specializations (nursery teachers, ethicists, harmonizer souls, masters of design, explorers...)
As I said before, I know some people are going to automatically reject it because it relies on hypnotherapy. They are going to assume that the hypnotist implanted false memories among his clients. At the very least, they are going to claim that networking between the 67 clients covered in these case studies resulted in the remarkable consistency among them. This does not appear to be the case. The author holds a Ph.D. in counseling and is a state-certified Master Hypnotherapist. He is aware of the common criticisms and he makes a believable case for why they do not apply in his work. I believed him.
Once again, the overall consistency between the 67 cases is remarkable. Different terminology and symbolism is occasionally used but it is obvious that the same things are being described. What we have is an orderly picture of classification of soul development and of the structure of the spiritual world. It is remarkably similar to that described in different language over the millennia by shamans, the Vedas, the Platonists, the Gnostics. It also reminds one of the experiences of Robert Monroe and of George Meek in more modern times. Yet, you do not get the impression that the author or his subjects were overly familiar with these teachings at the time of the sessions. It is like the spontaneous symbolism that Jung described as arising from the collective unconscious; only in this case the source is the hyperconscious- the realm of soul guides.
We forfeit our physical body after death but our eternal life energy unites with the force of a divine oversoul in an orderly progression. Our soul reflects a small portion of this oversoul that we call God.
As it clearly states near the end of the book, the great lesson of Earth is to overcome both planetary and private destructive forces in life, grow strong from the effort, and move on. But then earth isn't the only available learning ground...
Expands on First book.......2007-04-05
Mr. Newton expands on the work of his first book with plenty of new information. This book, as the first, is written based on information that Michael Newton has gained from hundreds of clients that have experienced life "on the other side", or in heaven. The first book guides you through the process chronologically after death, this book basically expands on the first without a chronological format. Has interesting new info, like, where do new souls come from? Are their pets in heaven, and if so, do we have access to them? Recommend reading his first book first, but it 's not necessary.

'Mind is the Master-Power that molds and makes,
And Man is Mind, and evermore he takes
The tool of Thought, and shaping what he wills,
Brings forth a thousand joys, a thousand ills:-
He thinks in secret, and it comes to pass:
Environment is but his looking glass.'
-From the book
This book was my introduction to 'Change your thoughts, change yourlife'. A friend gave me this book several years ago and it dramatically changed the way I began to think. It just made sense, it clicked with me. I was also very surprised to find out that all those years I was thinking that my thoughts were private, no one but me could know them. Then, I read this and realized that our thoughts do show in many ways: appearance, health, our circumstances, etc.
I have read many books on this subject and this is one that will ALWAYS remain in my collection. I still pull it off the shelf and read it occassionally. It's overflowing with valuable wisdom on how your thoughts create your world.
This volume has 5 books in one. It's a small but somewhat chunky book with 384 pages.
"Oh Be Wise", This helps!.......2007-04-10
Great book. His writings are inspiring. You will also note some interesting biographical info in the beginning.

This is the volume to start with, but I would recommend all three volumes in "The Wisdom of James Allen" series. These books are valuable to read in marathon sessions, yet they can be practically consumed in short sittings. A meal of just a few pages will give you sufficient spiritual energy for the day. I recommend reading and re-reading because the wisdom is timeless and the principles can be applied daily. This is important reading for clergy, counselors and anyone who wants to start the quest of being a guide by first learning to guide themselves.
Great Wisdom.......2007-01-10
As a Man Thinketh is a must read and has been for most of the 20th and now the 21st century. To get this companion piece with other great writings by James Allen is amazing. I would suggest it for anyone who is interested in finding the tools necessary to command their own lives.
Book review.......2007-01-04
A very enjoyable read. The simplicity of his ideas is refreshing. I do believe it really can be this simple. This small pocket size book is easy to fit into a bag/purse, or pocket and take with you wherever you go. I find spending a few minutes here and there reading it works well. Pleasant and easy to follow. Seems like a very sincere person.

not my favourite, but ok.......2007-07-13
Like another reviewer, I too was disappointed that MaryAnn didn't get her very own Carpathian. And what about poor old Vodk--er Vikirnoff? Why hasn't he gotten his own book with his life mate in it yet? Perhaps the two are being saved for their own books at a later point in time? I was a little sorry for Velma, but it provided a slightly different view of "unclaimed" lifemates. Shea's mother wasn't in quite the same position as Velma, since she had been partially claimed by her lifemate. At least, claimed enough that he was able to impregnate her, but not enough to totally lock them together and to convert her. Also, I think that this is the first time we have had a human villian who was NOT a vamp hunter in the series. And frankly, that doctor was just creepy. But I can see why Ms. Feehan put him in the book, since poor Destiny needed to see that there were evil people in all species so that she could start to heal mentally. And why the difference in the way the vamp blood affected Destiny? Why was it so different from the way Alexandria was affected? Was it because the vamp was the one that completed the transformation? Or because he wasn't her life-mate? All interesting theories that Ms Feehan really need(ed)(s) to address.
I love Carpathians.......2007-06-28
This is one of my favorite Carpathian novels. Feehan presents a wonderful Carpathian male, Nicolae, as the hero...and an equally strong female, Destiny, as his lifemate. Destiny was human, but converted by a vampire. Her story of abuse and recovery is quite realistic...as are most of the characters in the novel. I laughed out loud in some places because the more Feehan writes about the Carpathians, the better she gets at injecting a sense of humor into them after they have regained their emotions. She also introduces my favorite Carpathian in the this novel...he is Nicolae's brother, Vikirnoff. Feehan has a lot of fun at Vikirnoff's expense. Also, a bonus, Gregori and Savannah put in an appearance, and it is always nice to see them again. I truly enjoyed reading this book. I have to say, I am not a huge fan of long drawn out sex scenes, but there were one or two in this book that got my attention. Read, laugh, cry, and enjoy this one.
Another Dark Story.......2007-04-05
It is a good book. It follows the series well, the plot stays with the ones that come before it.
The sex scenes are too drawn out, the story line is good though. I have become accustom to skipping the 3-4 page long sex and then starting to read again.
I'll continure to buy the dark series, just because I like the stories.
Brought tears to my eyes.......2007-01-26
I sooo felt for Destiny and what she went through. To live through what she did since the age of six, I seriously doubt that there are very many women or men that could deal with the pain she endured every day of her life. I could also understand her not reaching out to Nicolae, after all he had shown her his darkside and to her mind that made him vampire, but her heart and soul knew otherwise.
This is a very touching story and it touches on the things that we woman sometimes go through that others don't see, or don't want to see. Kudos for Christine and her wonderful stories. I can't wait to see what happens with MaryAnn.
Destiny had a rough go of it.......2007-01-03
but w/ Nichole's tender hand and undying love, she learned to over come her past and move on better and stronger and healthier.

Customer Reviews:
Really, a 3.5... *spoilers ahead* .......2007-03-08
I've been following this series for awhile now. At one point, a few years ago, I was so addicted that I had to order the 3 books that had been released in the UK because I couldn't wait for the US versions to come out. So, it was with much pleasure and anticipation that I sat down to read books 10, 11, and 12 in one sitting.
I have to say that Book 12 left me a bit disappointed. At the end of the book, Shan has the main character go back in the time & prevent himself from making the mistake of kidnapping Madam Octa. Since Darren manages to stop himself from kidnapping the spider, he never makes the deal with Mr. Crepsley & ends up leading a normal, healthy, life as a human. This, of course, means that Darius is probably never born (because Annie wouldn't be a single mom at 16). But there is a possibility that others still die the same way -- Mr. Crepsley, Shancus... their fate may be the same, but Darren won't be around to witness it.
I understand that Shan felt that this was the only way to resolve the convoluted system of "Destiny" that he created in the past 11 books. However, in the process, it left the reader high and dry because the ending basically told us that the stories we had just invested time and effort in for the past few years didn't happen. Sure, they would still happen in a way -- but these trials and tribulations wouldn't fall on a boy named Darren Shan. Some other, nameless, person would step up to take over Darren's destiny. And we're just supposed to leave to our imagination how the universe righted itself & who was affected by the change in the end. Will the ones who died still end up dead? Will this new child (whoever it is) end up sacrificing themselves & floating to Paradise (as Darren predicts he/she would) or, maybe, they cannot resist the lure that Mr. Tiny places on them.
The biggest issue I have with this ending is that it makes us wonder -- why'd we read the past 11 books if they were all irrelevant? This is the equivalent of Shan ending the series with a scene where Darren wakes up from a nightmare and finds out it was all a dream. I invested time and emotion in Darren's Saga. And now you're telling me that it wasn't Darren's saga, at all. And, perhaps, even the people mentioned in the book might not have had anything to do with it, because Darren changed the course of history.
Another thing that bothered me were the holes in the whole "fate vs. destiny" situation. Darren managed to overcome the two set futures by killing himself and Steve. However -- why didn't he just have the power to "Just Say No" to Des Tiny's edicts? Why not just say, "Thanks, but no thanks, I choose my own fate and I don't want to rule the world." Particularly when he'd already been shown the consequences his actions if he did get mixed up with Mr. Tiny's vision. The author was feeding us two messages: (1) You control on your fate in a manner of speaking and should choose the path of good, but (2) If Mr. Tiny makes you evil, there's nothing you can do about it. I was like, "huh??" Not to mention -- Mr. Tiny had waaaayyy too much power & I didn't like the fact that he wasn't facing any consequences for his actions.
Also, why did Darren go the Lake of Souls... he was a decent guy and sacrificed himself. I didn't buy the whole "guilt" thing. Other vampires had probably done much more bad things in their long lives (like Mr. Crepsley) and they went straight to Paradise. It made no sense that Darren -- a half-Vampire who constantly did the ethical thing -- would end up in the Lake of Souls for hundreds of thousands of years & there would be no force in the universe that could right that mistake. Again, giving Mr. Tiny way too much power.
Basically, I give this 3.5 stars because the series, as a whole, is excellent. And, naturally, if you read Books 1-11, you have to read this finale. However, this particular reader was left unsatisfied with the resolution of the series. I was hoping for more closure.
Sink your teeth into it!.......2007-02-27
Darren Shan is just an ordinary school boy, until his friend Alan Morris finds a flyer advertising the Cirque Du Freak, an illegal freak show. There he sees Alexander Ribs, a man with bones like rubber, the Wolf-Man, Truska, the bearded lady, Rhamus Twobellies, and many more. But he also saw Mr. Crepsley and his amazing poisonous performing spider, Madam Octa, who leads Darren to becoming a half-vampire! Through books 1-11, Darren makes the trek to Vampire Mountain, no small feat for one his age, endures the Trials of Initiation, fails, becomes a ruler of the vampire clan, and has his best friend in the entire world, Steve (Leopard) Leonard turn against him.
Now, Darren finally returns to his home city many years later - where Steve has sworn to wreak havoc - to find that his now grown-up younger sister, Annie, is married to Steve, but she doesn't love him. Darren doesn't know this yet. He wants to kill Darius, Steve's son, in revenge for Steve killing his other friend's son, Shancus. But then Steve reveals who is Darius's mother, Annie, and if Darren killed Darius, he would be killing his own nephew. And cackling like a demon, he left Darren and his friends in the blood-drenched night.
Then, Darren is off to fight. It is time for The War of the Scars, either Darren or Steve dies, whoever triumphs will become the Lord of the Shadows, and destroy the world. Darren, wounded and burning, finally stabs Steve's shriveled forgery of a heart, but when an ancient prophecy is revealed by a mysterious little man called Mr. Tiny and his witch-daughter Evanna, Darren is so upset, he kills himself. He and Steve both drop into the Lake of Souls. What happens here?
This book made me realize the horrors of real life, and if you start reading this series, you will NOT put them down! Dare to be scared? Sons of Destiny is a page-turner, awesome and grueling, it will leave any reader hungry for more. (Ages 11-16)

The War Is Over.......2007-02-16
This book is the last book of the Cirque Du Freak books and the very best. Darren finds out that Steve's son is his own nephew, and that Steve blooded him so Darren does something very dangerous. He tries to turn him from vampanese to vampire. Steve captures all of his friends at the Cirque Du Freak show so Darren tries to rescue them. The rescue turns into a blood bath. Darren follows Steve to settle this once and for all. They end up both dying and, going to the Lake of Souls. Many hundreds of years later Darren gets fished out and gets to go into the past as a little person and gets to change his own destiny and goes to paradise.
The author really captured my interest at the beginning of the book because it was constant fighting. My favorite part was when Darren let Steve kiss him to chant destiny. It was my favorite part because I didn't think destiny could be changed. People who like constant fighting should read this book. This book has a lot, lot of fighting.

Book Description
We are a diabetic nation: according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one in three Americans born in this century will become diabetic. James Hirsch's myth-shattering blend of history, reportage, advocacy, and memoir will speak for, and to, the 20 million Americans who live with this disease. Cheating Destiny offers revealing views of the diabetic subculture, the urge toward secrecy that many diabetics feel, the glycemic rollercoaster they ride constantly, and the remarkable perseverance-even heroism-required for survival. Hirsch is uniquely qualified to write this book. An award-winning journalist and best-selling author, he has lived with type 1 diabetes for twenty-five years. His brother Irl, also a diabetic, is one of the country's leading diabetologists. Most poignantly, he knows firsthand the toll diabetes can take on parents: his three-year-old son was diagnosed with the disease while Hirsch was writing this book. Hirsch draws on all this expertise to craft an incisive, surprising portrayal of the fascinating science behind the disease and the skyrocketing impact of diabetes on our economy and society. Most striking is his candid, authoritative writing about the psychological and emotional hurdles that diabetics confront every day. Anyone who lives with diabetes-or loves a diabetic-will find here an empowering voice of empathy.

50+ Years with Type I...Hirsch is right.......2007-05-20
I've had Type I diabetes since age 3 and I'm now 54.
The fact that I'm still alive is a testament to the improvements in treatment of the specific type of diabetes I have. Having said that, the incredibly bad training and lack of understanding of most medical professionals is downright frightening. With my years of experience, I know when a medical professional is clueless and can find one who does have knowledge and experience. What scares me are those parents and patients who don't understand and end up being treated by the uninformed or misinformed. Mr. Hirsch gets it right on that count and that is what I consider the key point of an effective treatment plan...start with the very best professionals you can find. Do NOT settle for wannabes with degrees that mean less than nothing! Find physicians who have the disease themselves and are active in research and have well trained, experienced staffs. If your physician gets excited and starts praising you for your 5.0 A1c...and does NOT warn you about the neurological damage to the brain from excessive lows, it's time to find a new endocrinologist.
My last two endos are both type I's who teach at major medical schools. My primary care physicians communicate with the endos and coordinate my treatment...effectively.
Be proactive and research your medical caregivers.
Kudos to Mr. Hirsch for a book that states the truths of diabetes care in our time!
Cheating Destiny.......2007-05-12
As a mother of a Type 1 Diabetic, I was pleased to find a very readable and even encouraging personal story to be your own advocate and responsible for your own destiny.
Disappointing and misleading on several levels .......2007-04-12
I read this book on the basis of its reviews, but I don't understand why it's been so well received. It is eccentric, episodic, and disjointed, as if the author took a number of shorter articles and threw them together willy-nilly. As such, it is neither coherent nor particularly informative. It is certainly not a book for anyone trying to obtain objective, helpful information about management of these two diseases.
I use the term "two diseases" advisedly. I am a Type 2 diabetic (non-insulin dependent) from a family with a multi-generational history of both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. My father (Type 2) and his half-brother (Type 1) both died of diabetic complications. Although Hirsch provides a sop to Type 2 diabetics (90% of all diabetics), it is clear that his primary focus is Type 1. Why not just say so? I am not belittling that focus. But Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes are different in terms of cause, mechanism of failure at the cellular level, and treatment options.
Hirsch (in common with many "crusaders" for specific diseases) is also outrageously careless with regard to his usage of the word "cure". The fact is that the more researchers discover about the intricacies of the human body, the farther away they find themselves from a "cure" for many, many diseases, from the merely inconvenient to the life-threatening. Modern research and medicine struggle with a myriad of complex, chronic disease processes - it isn't all about money and politics. Therefore, although "cures" are devoutly to be wished for, "mere" successful management of a disease by a patient and his or her doctor should be applauded, not condemned.
In this regard, I take serious issue with his opinions concerning "tight control" methodologies. His comments on Bernstein's diet are specious (and I don't think he was playing devil's advocate). I don't follow the diet myself, but I do successfully practice a 40-20-40-20-40-20 regime. Further, the reversal of symptoms in early Type 2 diabetics is not a "cure" - it is merely a reversal of symptoms. The person remains a diabetic. This is something of which my "ignorant, income motivated" doctor reminds me every time I see him (and believe me, he has amassed far more than "2 hours" of diabetes education over his years of practice!).
I wish I had something more positive to say about this book - the author can be an excellent writer when he chooses to be. But this type of over-the-top selective information does more harm than good.
Type 1 Diabetic.......2007-03-26
I LOVED this book! I have had type 1 diabetes for 24 years and I am very well managed and complication free. This book was interesting and informative in so many ways... the history of diabetes treatment; the hurdles and challenges of treatment & research given today's healthcare system, pharmaceutical industry, rewards systems and cultural landscape; and a first person perspective of a knowledgeable long time diabetic. You may not agree with everything Hirsch has to say, but this is a GREAT read nonetheless.
A must-read for health care providers & those affected by diabetes.......2007-03-21
wow. phenomenal book. The text contains both history surrounding this disease and disuccion about the shortcomings of today's medical care thereof. Hirsch succinctly highligts the critical components of the challenges of the disease & its care. I recommend this to all patients, colleagues, & friends.

Book Description
Courageous Souls explores the premise that we are all eternal souls who plan our lives, including our greatest challenges, prior to birth for purposes of spiritual growth. The book contains ten true stories of people who planned physical illness, having handicapped children, deafness, blindness, drug addiction, alcoholism, losing a loved one, and severe accidents. Because very different life challenges are often planned for similar reasons, readers who have not faced these specific challenges will nevertheless see themselves - and their motivations as a soul - in these stories. As readers come to realize that they themselves planned their lives, suffering that once seemed purposeless becomes imbued with deep meaning. Wisdom may be acquired in a more conscious manner; feelings of anger, guilt, blame, and victimization are replaced by acceptance, forgiveness, peace, and gratitude.
Customer Reviews:
So that's why . . ........2007-10-08
If you ever want to get into the backside of your pre-birth planning of your life challenges, read Courageous Souls by Robert Schwartz. Want to know why you attract illness, accidents, birth defects? Want to know why you chose a life of alcoholism or drug addiction, or are around someone who has? Read this book. The stories, while may start out slow at first, are powerful and insightful. Just stick with them. Robert uses mediums who are able to access multiple guides at one time, and your primary guide and listen in on conversations between you and your soul group.
not credible.......2007-09-30
I got to p. 300 and started reading another book. I found this book painstakingly slow to read, the information provided by the mediums: farfetched, and the conclusions drawn by the author, hard to swallow. Often, when mediums are tired, their accuracy rate diminishes. I never heard of any of the mediums used in this book. Robert Schwartz makes everything so complicated when the subject matter is really quite easy to understand. The book just doesn't flow easily and it's not a page turner in my opinion. I'm a believer, but this book really is a waste of time and money. Read Journey of the Soul by Michael Newton, PhD. Instead of using mediums, he enters the superconsciousness of his clients and elicits information from them directly about their experiences on The Other Side.
An Empowering Way to Reframe Painful Challenges in Our Lives.......2007-09-17
It has been said that asking oneself the question, "Who was I before I was born?" can teach us the most about our true spiritual identity -- yet few of us have been so enlightened as to have heard the full reply. COURAGEOUS SOULS takes this starting point one step further by exploring just how we may have crafted our entire life around all of our life circumstances -- both the high and the low points.
What sets Robert Schwartz's book apart from other books about spirituality, reincarnation and the afterlife is his organized use of intuitive readings as companion pieces to accompany the various life stories he includes. These intuitive sessions provide a deep sense of interconnectedness and unconditional love shared in our lifetimes which we sometimes lose sight of, as well as insights into how we continue learning life lessons from one life to the next. The stories include descriptions of people who have experienced tremendous suffering who are greatly inspired and relieved to see an underlying sense of purpose and meaning to all they have gone through.
COURAGEOUS SOULS is an exceptional book for anyone interested in exploring the true nature of their spiritual identity, who is willing to keep an open mind regarding the value of some of the most painful challenges we humans face in our lives on Earth; this is highly recommended reading for anyone seeking to reframe and find deeper meaning from the painful challenges, setbacks or hardships in their lives.
Some of life's challenges explained........2007-09-06
.
Before I even finished reading this book, I ordered more and had them sent to my friends. This book is amazing.
Told through many soul journies, Robert Schwartz brought in the talents of true mediums who were able to discover decisions that these people made before they were born - again. He did not use just one medium, but several, and they are listed in the back of the book. The individuals who shared their stories are also listed with email addresses -- and if they are able and have the time they will answer your questions.
This book came to me at a time I really needed to be reminded of my own experiences through many lives and the time between our next life. The stories are beautiful because they are able to explain why certain tragedies happen to a person.
I highly recommend this book, especially to those with open and searching minds.
Why Human Challenges Exist!.......2007-08-28
Courageous Souls is highly recommended to anyone trying to understand the suffering, tragedy or loss that has caused them to question life, death and/or God. And who among us is not inflicted by such challenges and questions in our lifetime? In my eight years researching life after death, spirituality and life purpose, I have discovered no better explanation of why human challenges exist than what is so eloquently written in Robert Schwartz's book.
